There are two times for candle lighting. The earlier time is Plag HaMincha (one and a quarter seasonal hours [Shaos Zemanios] before sunset [a seasonal hour is equal to one-twelfth of the total time from sunrise to sunset]) and is the earliest time to light candles. The later time is the regular candle lighting time and is 18 minutes before sunset, the latest time to light candles. If one wants to light candles when the shul accepts Shabbos, this is approximately 40 minutes after the start of Mincha.

Rabbi Goldberger Thursday Morning Shiur for Women

Ch. 3, v. 23: “Rav loch” — It is much for you — The Holy Zohar, Ari z”l, and Mei’am Lo’eiz list numerous reasons for Moshe’s not being allowed entry into Eretz Yisroel, all having the common factor of his having great virtues, all of which overpowered the sanctity of Eretz Yisroel. This is “RAV loch.” You are so great that you simply cannot go there. (Nachal K’dumim)

Ch. 3, v. 26: “Va’yisa’beir Hashem bi l’maanchem” — And Hashem has been angry with me for you — Translate “l’maanchem” as “for your benefit.” Because Hashem was very displeased with Moshe and did not allow him ingress into Eretz Yisroel, he died in the desert, and as per the medrash, although the bnei Yisroel who died in the desert did not deserve to rise at the time of “t’chias ha’meisim,” since their leader would be resurrected, they too will be resurrected along with him. (Malbim)

Ch. 3, v. 26: “Al tosef da’beir eiloy” — Do not continue to speak to me — It seems that with this response the door of entry to Eretz Yisroel was closed, shut, and sealed for Moshe. Was there any hope of his meriting entry to Eretz Yisroel at this point? M.R. Dvorim #7 says that had the bnei Yisroel prayed to Hashem that they wanted only Moshe as their leader in Eretz Yisroel, Hashem would have complied with their entreaties.

Ch. 4, v. 34: “Uvmofsim” — And with wonders — This refers to all ten of the plagues, which were each a wonder, contrary to the laws of nature. (Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Rabbeinu Bachyei)

Ch. 4, v. 34: “B’masos b’osos uvmofsim ubmilchomoh uvyad chazokoh uvizro’a n’tuyoh uvmoro’im g’dolim” — With tests, with signs and with wonders and with war and with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm and with large awe-inspiring acts — This is quite a lineup of powerful activities that Hashem has done in Egypt to bring about the exodus. Seven aspects of strength are mentioned here to allude to the seven days each (most of the plagues) plague lasted. Four of these phrases are plural, so if we add four we have eleven. This alludes to the ten plagues plus the happenings at Yam Suf. (Rabbeinu Yoel).

Numerous commentators note that every letter of the Alef-Beis is contained in this verse. There are many allusions connected to this. Hashem took the bnei Yisroel out of

Egypt conditional to their accepting the Torah, which is written in the 22 letters of the Alef-Beis (Rabbeinu Bachyei, Rabbeinu Yoel, Rokei’ach, Yalkut Ho’eizovi). As well, the Ten Commandments contain all the letters of the Alef-Beis. There are 27 words in this verse, corresponding to the 22 letters and 5 final letters of the Alef-Beis (Rokei’ach). Since the acceptance of the Torah at Har Sinai was the assurance that Hashem would not turn the world back into vast nothingness, the mention of all the aspects of Hashem’s mani-fest actions that brought about the ten plagues, which correspond to the ten emanations of the creation of the world are present in our verse. The word “tov” is mentioned in the chapters of the creation nine times. TOV has the numerical value of 17, times 7 = 119, the number of letters of our verse. The Ten Commandments begin with the letter Alef and end with the letter final Chof. So does our verse (Rabbeinu Bachyei). This would explain why our verse has the plural “Hashem ElokeichEM” but then immediately ends with the singular “l’ei’neCHo,” to end with a Chof. The letters Alef and Chof have the numerical value of 21, corresponding to the Holy Name E-H-Y-H, which is the Name through which Moshe was sent to redeem the bnei Yisroel from Egypt. The word ACH is the power through which Hashem will punish the evildoers of the foreign nations at the end of days (its literal meaning being “I will smite”), and at the same time it bodes good for the bnei Yisroel, as per the verse “Ach tov l’Yisroel” (T’hilim 73:10) (Baal Haturim).

Ch. 4, v. 35: “Atoh ho’reiso lodaas ki Hashem hu hoElokim ein ode milvado” — You have shown to make known that Hashem is the G-d there is none besides Him — There was a prevalent theological belief that there is ch”v a G-d who bestows good on the world and another one who bestows punishment. Some commentators say that this is why the Ten Commandments in parshas Yisro begin with, “I am Hashem your G-d Who has taken you out of Egypt,” rather than “Who has created the world.” By stating that Hashem took us out of Egypt the verse advises that there is but one Deity who has both punished the Egyptians and taken us out, doing both good and punishing. Perhaps this is also the intention of our verse. You have shown that Hashem is Elokim, that Hashem, “midas horachamim,” and Elokim, “midas hadin,” are one. There is no other. (Nirreh li)

Ch. 5, v. 17: “V’lo sinof” — And do not commit adultery — Rashi writes that “niuf,” adultery, is a word reserved for adultery with a married woman only, and not other forbidden unions. Rashi on verse 7 writes that he has already explained the Ten Command-ments. If so, why does he explain “niuf” here, as he has already explained it in Shmos 20:13? (Although we find Rashi offering a

few comments on this second account of the Ten Commandments, each one of these comments is on a change from the wording of the earlier text.)

There is a difference between the text here and in parshas Yisro. There the verse says “Lo sinof” without the linking Vov. Here we have “V’lo sinof,” connecting it to the previous words “Lo sirtzach.” We could possibly misunderstand this to mean that one is prohibited to kill his fellow man, AND if he did kill him, leaving the victim’s wife as a widow, he is still prohibited from having relations with her and this is considered “niuf” for the murderer. Therefore Rashi reiterates what he previously said in parshas Yisro, that “niuf” only applies to a married woman, and not to a widowed woman even under these circumstances. (Ro’isi)

Ch. 5, v. 26: “Mi yi’tein v’hoyoh l’vovom zeh lo’hem” — Who will give that their present heart will be for them — Medrash Breishis Raboh 34:10 says that the wicked are under the control of their heart, while the righteous are in control of their heart. This is the intention of these words. “If only their present heart will continue to be theirs,” i.e., under their control. (Chasam Sofer)

Ch. 5, v. 28: “V’atoh poh amode imodi” — And you stay here with Me — This verse is the source for the opinion that Moshe refrained from marital relations for the rest of his life. After a three-day purification and preparation period of separating from their wives prior to hearing the Ten Commandments, the rest of the bnei Yisroel went back to their tents (verse 27) to resume having marital relations, while Moshe was told to remain with Hashem, i.e., to not resume. However, the M.R. at the end of parshas V’zose Habrochoh says that Moshe restrained from the time of communicating with Hashem by the burning bush. Perhaps at that point he did so voluntarily, while here he received a command. This is in consonance with the words of Tosfos on the gemara Shabbos 87a d.h. “V’atoh poh,” that Moshe voluntarily separated from his wife even before Hashem’s command, although Tosfos does not say when this began. Tosfos goes on to explain exactly what was Miriam’s and Aharon’s complaint.

Ch. 6, v. 6: “V’shinantom l’vo’necho” — And you shall ingrain them in your sons — Although the Torah extols us to teach the Torah to our sons, nevertheless, a proper Torah education for our daughters is of extreme importance. The Chazon Ish was asked what took preference. A community did not have sufficient funds for both a boys’ and a girls’ education facility. Which comes first? He answered that a girls’ school is a priority.
