The southern stretch of Patong is a colourful and intriguing area. Many small art-shops and local restaurants enhance the ambiance of this the area. Moreover, it has become one of Patong’s most buzzing entertainment hubs.

The first major player to set up here was the internationally re-nowned Hard Rock Café. Then Hooters arrived to add to the area’s good-time vibe. and more recently, the rebranded DusitD2 hotel and bar(s). a corridor now connects the Hard Rock Café, Hooters, D2 bar, and an english-style pub due to be open in the new future.

The first thing one notices about the DusitD2 is the massive glass doors leading to a big circular bar with colored leD lights. The bar serves probably some of the best mixed cocktails in Patong, with its supremely refreshing Mojito earning particularly high marks.

The food is just as excellent, thanks to the culinary skills of Chef Yi-fan Chu who hails from Taiwan. He was educated in USa, and then worked in Germany, before arriving here. Here’s been in Phuket for five years now.

Yi-fan learned how to cook at a young age from his mother, and summarizes his outlook as thus: “We believe that a great meal should be a kind of journey, returning you to sources of pleasure you may have forgotten – and places you haven’t yet been.”

if it is a quiet night, take the time to meet the chef, especially if you have a special function in mind and wish to discuss your requirements. These he specializes in.

On the day we visited, we tried a number of dishes including: the Diver Scallops, the D2 US Burger, the US Prime Rib eye, the Passion fruit Pana Cotta, and our personal favorite, the D@ Signature Duck Curry. This writer has a fondness for his duck curry, and the one i enjoyed here was probably one of the best i’ve tasted in the last decade.

This venue offers terrific value, including: a Thai Buffet Night Market featuring street food at 599++ Baht per person, every friday night and an italian Buffet Night at 699++Baht per person, every Tuesday night.

However we are all hoping Chef Yi-fan introduces a Taiwanese Night featuring the spicy fare of his home-land. after all, there is a scarcity of really good Chinese food in Phuket. Maybe the talented and personable Yi-fan Chu is just to person to fix that shortcoming. in any case, you’ll never leave this place hungry, and anything less than utterly satisfied.

What to do in Patong? The question sounds like the start of a long-winded joke. if you think it it's all girlie bars and dodgy dis-cos, then you have been going out with the wrong crowd! Patong is changing and cleaning up its act just a little bit. Today there are some really cool and fun places to go.

for a first stop you can't go wrong with Joe’s Downstairs. The ser-vice at cocktail bar is outstanding by Patong standards. friendly staff, excellent and varied cocktails, Cuban cigars, and sublime snacks in a superb location – what more could you ask for? They also serve pretty good dinners and have a decent wine selection.

Close by are two more good restaurants, D’Marizio, specializing in italian fare, and Baan Rim Pa, which serves up high-end Thai food.

another option for fine dining is the 9th floor. Top-quality in both its menu-offerings and service. a drink in the newly opened D2 bar is a must if you are planning on having a big night out. a quick shot here

is sure to get the party going. as for nightclubs, "Seduction" is where the party never stops! This club manages to get the best deejays from

around the world to play there. and the club is always packed with fun and friendly people; the kind rarely found in other Patong nightclubs.

for an even classier night in Phuket's playful Sin City, the Blow ViP club is a hip venue for the über-cools, so make sure you are dressed for the occasion.

above all, enjoy the "sanook" -- the Thai word for fun and good times. There's nowhere in the world like Patong.

“What did Dom Perignon say to fellow monks after he invented champagne? ... ‘Come quickly, i am tasting the stars.’”

Champagne occupies a special place in our culinary consciousness. it’s the sparkling cupful to celebrate success, outstanding achievement, life’s milestones and sometimes simply for the sheer pleasure of enjoying this exquisite and celebratory french wine. Many enjoy italian Pro-secco for the same kind of motives. But they are two altogether rather different kinds of “bubbly”.

Strictly speaking, Champagne is a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown only in the Champagne region of france, and in accord-ance with a set of state-mandated regulations that includes a imperative secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle – in order to create its fa-mous carbonation.

“Méthode Champenoise” is the means by which Champagne is produced. although Champagne is considered the king of sparkling wines, various other “bubblies” are produced worldwide,

including in Spain, Germany, South africa, and italy. for example, Prosecco – made from same name grape – is produced from vineyards around picturesque northeast italy. Unlike Champagne, Prosecco usually is produced using the “Charmat” method, in which the secondary fermentation

takes place in stainless steel tanks, making the wine less costly to produce. So it does not ferment in the bottle, and there-fore “goes off ” with time. and so it should be enjoyed as young as possible, preferably within three years of its vintage.

Вы их видите постоянно через боль-шие трехметровые раздвижные окна. Морской бриз колышет их, и вы ощущаете внутри поме-щения свежесть моря, свежесть загородной природы.

more time to look deep inside themselves to relax and improve body and soul. To create the design of the project i sought inspiration from observing coconut palms. The dark-brown colour of a tree trunk, and the varied textures of the coconut fruits – these colours and textures are intrinsic to Phuket. Duly, such colours and and surface textures can be found on the walls covering and the furniture, as well as the outdoor accessories, and of course there are a lot of palm trees around. You can see them through the three-metre high sliding windows. Which reminds me, these windows will enable residents to enjoy Phuket's fabulous sea breezes.

When Phuket island gets sails

The beginning of december is when Phuket Island becomes the centre of asia’s finest, largest and most popular yachting event, "The Phuket King’s Cup regatta." Thanks to the popularity of the contest, this is a special (and lucrative) time for luxury-villa rentals, hotels and tourism in general. The event attracts keelboats and catamaran teams from around the world, as well as yachting enthusiasts who arrive for the regatta to enjoy the high-end beach parties, sponsored by 5-star hotels and which take place during regatta week as an integral part of this world-renowned yacht racing event. 2014 is the year of the 28th Cup.

W hen in 1986, a number of Thailand’s yachting fraternity met to discuss what they could do as a special tribute to His

Majesty King Bhumibol adulyadej’s 60th birthday, they decided to hold a Royal Regatta in Phuket's ultramarine waters as a gesture to His Majesty the King’s jubilee, and to honour him.

Bay. The regatta began with a mixture of keelboats, catamarans, lasers and even windsurfers. More recently the regat-ta has become a big boat event, attract-ing keelboats and ocean-going catama-ran teams from around the world. as a principal fixture on the asian Yachting Circuit, the regatta annually features upwards of 90 boats (with a record of 103 vessels in 2007) and 2,000 mariners, ranging from the formula One of the sea lanes, the Racing Class, to live-aboard ocean cruisers, multihulls and classics. Under the Royal Patronage of His Maj-esty the King of Thailand, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King's Cup Re-gatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

The winner of the regatta receives the ‘King’s Cup’, a trophy designed by renowned architect and designer Ml Tridhosyuth Devakul. The tro-phy is made off silver and ashwood, and features nine beautiful sails emerging from the central sil-ver column positioned on a base representing the sea, and nine bezels of widening growth under the nine sails.The final day of sailing and award presentations usually ends with a prize-giving ceremony and an extensive party with over 1,500 guests. The gath-ering is attended by participants, their families and friends, ViPS and hundreds of sailing enthusiasts from around the world. The proceedings tradi-tionally conclude with a stunning fireworks display over the bay and its exclusive holiday accommoda-tion.We are looking forward to the Kings Cup Regatta 2014!

en-deck ship left the harbour in the city of Otaru and started sailing towards the Sea of Okhotsk. Shortly after the expedition, leader Juan Carlos Restrepo, conveyed all the main safety information. We were then able to enjoy the cruise with cock-tails on the Pool Deck introducing each other by chatting to get to know our cruising partners for the next few weeks.

June 16, 2014 - Korsakov, Russiain the morning the Silver Discoverer docked

at the port of Korsakov on Sakhalin island. We were all excited to take our first steps on Russian soil. it would be nice to know something about the local people. in winter, there is downhill and cross coun-try skiing and ice fishing to be enjoyed, while in autumn hunting, berry picking and a great Russian “shashlik” barbeque are an attraction.at local markets one can buy food such as king crabs and vegetables. i could not help myself but i had to check out the old soviet cars like the ladas and the UaZs. as the evening started, we had our Captain’s Wel-come Cocktail party, where Captain Nicolay Tili-lyuk introduced himself and welcomed our lucky guests to this very unique and unexplored part of the world on board the Silver Discoverer.

Y heard and as we neared the landing beach, shapes could be seen, some small and many large – these were the mammalian inhabitants of Tyuleniy island - seals!i could make out two species of seals, the small Northern fur Seal, and the larger Steller's Sea lion. We were climbing up quickly to an area which overlooked part of the island. The view from here was simply breathtaking. The whole of the island was covered with a living carpet of Common Guil-lemots or Murres numbering tens of thousands. On a nearby roof of an abandoned hut was anoth-er incredible sight: a group of the most unlikely looking seabirds. almost black in colour, they have bright white eyes, a lipstick-red beak and cutely curling crest on the forehead – these were Crest-ed auklets. Setting up my spotting scope on these fabulous little darlings, i invited the guests to come and get a close-up view of them.

June 18, 2014 - Piltun lagoon, Sakhalin island

We arrived at Piltun lagoon at the Northern end of Sakhalin island. When we headed towards the shore we suddenly came across a Western Grey Whale mother and her calf in the shallows! The 15 m mom and her 7 m offspring were staying rath-er close to our Zodiacs (inflatable boats). Several times the whales came as close as 20 meters and made our cameras click away in frenzy. We could almost smell the mammals!ashore we met a party of commercial fishermen

тунский заливМы прибыли в район Пильтун-ского залива на северной око-нечности острова Сахалин. На пути к берегу мы неожиданно наткнулись на мать и детеныша западных серых китов, плаваю-щих на мелководье! 15-ти ме-тровая самка и 7-ми метровый младенец были так близко от наших резиновых лодок “Зоди-аков”. Несколько раз киты по-дошли к нам ближе 20 метров, и все пассажиры защелкали камерами в исступлении. Мы могли почти чувствовать запах этих великанов!На берегу нам встретились промысловики, которые гото-вили свои сети, в то время как другие местные жители ловили рыбу удочкой. На земле было набросано много кунджи (раз-новидность лосося) и какая-то обыкновенная рыбешка, кото-

рую здесь называют “рыба-ко-рова”.

ИоныСледуя GPS-навигатору сквозь туман, мы услышали землю за-долго до того, как смогли уви-деть ее. Рокот, фырканье и хрю-канье сивучей и пронзительные крики моевки. Наконец, “Зодиаки” подошели к маленькому острову Ионы с его пирамидой – идеальной вершиной и острыми, как брит-ва, гранитными склонами. Каж-дый уступ скалы был покрыт вопящими тушками толсто-клювой Кайры и огромными сивучами. Выключив двига-тель, мы плыли тихо, чтобы в полной мере воспринимать за-пахи и звуки сотен массивных сивучей в борьбе за место на пляже.

минские острова и бухта

ФедораВ то время как мы наслажда-лись на борту мартини-дегуста-цией и общеукрепляющим обе-дом с мексиканской ароматом Silver Discoverer бросил якорь в бухте Федора. В наши сегод-няшние планы входит треккинг по тайге. Десять бесстрашных исследо-вателей отправились в сопро-вождении местного лесника на близлежащий холм, не подозре-вая, что вскоре они завязнут в чаще непроходимого кустарни-ка. Хотя пробираться было не-просто, открывшийся вид с горы стоил усилий. Пусть и пришлось скинуть с себя по пути несколь-ко слоев одежды. Мы направили свои стопы обратно в русский лагерь, от которого стартовали. У нас оставалось буквально не-сколько минут, чтоб попробо-вать местную рыбу, погладить щенка и русскую голубую кош-

Отару, ЯпонияВ 10:30 утра круизный семи-палубный корабль Сильвер Дискаверер (Silver Discoverer) отшвартовался от пристани японского города Отару и взял курс на Охотское море. Вско-ре после того, как руководи-тель экспедиции Хуан Карлос Рестрепо провел инструктаж по технике безопасности, го-сти смогли предаться болтовне на террасе у бассейна, попи-вая коктейли, и познакомиться друг с другом.

КорсаковУтром Silver Discoverer прибыл в порт Корсаков на острове Са-халин. Пассажиры слегка вол-новались, делая первые шаги на Российской земле. Было инте-ресно узнать о людях Сахалина. Местные жители предпочита-ют зимой кататься на горных

лыжах и заниматься подледной рыбалкой, а осенью ходить на охоту, по ягоды и устраивать шашлык.На местном рынке продают-ся камчатские крабы и овощи. Прогуливаясь по округе, не-возможно отказать себе в удо-вольствии проинспектировать старые советские машины типа Лады и УАЗа. Вечером наш капитан Нико-лай Тилильюк устроил при-ветственный коктейль и ска-зал: добро пожаловать в самый уникальный и неизведанный уголок мира на борту Silver Discoverer.

ТюленийВид снаружи не выглядит мно-гообещающим ... словом, ту-ман!! Свирепый рев доносится издалека, и когда мы приближа-емся к берегу, из тумана показы-ваются сотни фигур, некоторые

поменьше, а другие огромные – это были тюлени!Можно было различить два вида: небольших северных морских котиков и мощных сивучей. Карабкаемся на гору, чтобы осмотреть окрестности. Вид открывается просто захва-тывающий. Весь остров покрыт живым ковром. Кроме тюленей это десятки тысяч птиц: тонко-клювые кайры, чистики и др.На соседней крыше забро-шенной хижины открывается другое невероятное зрелище: группа самого неожиданного вида птиц. Почти черного цве-та, они имеют ярко-белый глаз, будто напомаженный красный клюв и милый гребень на лбу - это большие конюги. Устано-вив бинокль, срочно наводим резкость, чтобы разглядеть ска-зочные маленькие создания как можно большему количеству желающих.

June 19, 2014 - at Sea and iony island

We navigated by GPS through the fog and could hear the island long before we could actually see it. We heard rumbling, snorting and grunts from the Steller's sea lions and the incessant squawking of the kittiwakes. finally, our Zodiac came up close to little iony island with its pyramid-per-fect peak and razor-sharp jagged granite rocks. every available rock face was covered wall-to-wall with the bodies of Thick-billed Murres and Steller’s sea lions.

We switched off the engine and floated quietly so we could take in the smells and sounds of hundreds of massive Steller’s sea lions fighting for a position on the beach.

June 20, 2014 - Malminskiye islands & fe-dora Bay, Russia

While we had Martini Tasting and a satisfying Mex-ican style lunch, Silver Discoverer had dropped anchor off fedora Bay at the Siberian mainland. The plan was to have a close encounter with the taiga (boreal forest) this afternoon. Ten intrepid explorers set off with a local ranger to the summit of a nearby hilltop, unaware that they would soon be bushwhacking their way. While the going was rough, the views were spectacular and well worth the effort. But we stripped off a few layers of clothing on the way.and so we turned for home, retracing our steps back to the Russian camp from which we had start-ed. Here we had time to sample local fish, pet the puppy and sleek Russian blue cat that had recently wandered in. it was an idyllic setting and we lin-gered a while before heading back on board.

June 21, 2014 - Okhotsk CityOkhotsk town has a population of approxi-

mately 5,000 people. We were greeted by tradition-ally dressed people with a loaf of bread and salt. On we went to the ethnic Cultures Centre to see

Y the tents of the local tribes, traditional household objects and dances. another highlight was their traditional dishes, a mixture of Russian and indige-nous cuisine. finally i tried to lasso a caribou (just the antler of course) from approximately 12 meters distance but missed three times - although i was told by my smiling instructor to aim more to the right; definitely no dinner for me tonight.

June 22, 2014 - Talan island and Zavyalova island

We arrived off the coast of the island and imme-diately we could see several Brown Bears on the shore. One bear moved down the slope, clambering over rocks to find the best vegetation to eat. it came closer and closer. Surely it would smell that we were there and be alarmed. Occasionally it would raise its head and stare towards us, sniffing the air because the wind was blowing towards us, and as bears have poor eyesight, it just ignored us. it was an 'i don't care' bear, coming right down to the water's edge and even lying on a rock looking at us with its paws crossed. Unbelievable! Being so close it was possible to feel the immensity of this beast with its massive clawed paws and huge heavy body;

yet its eyes appear small, hence perhaps its reliance on smell and sound. i have never experienced anything like this before. This was something truly special and i came away feeling totally privileged to have witnessed a com-pletely wild creature at such close range for so long.

June 23, 2014 - Yamskie island/Yapon Capein Cape Yapon, the northernmost point of

our voyage, the expedition Team and guests were able to enjoy a scenic walk along the coast and on the tundra while restaurant staff prepared some drinks to warm us up after our return to the landing site. Some of us were able to spot several brown bears playing in the far distance on a snowy slope. after we completed our walks and came back to the landing site, everyone was enjoying a heart-warm-ing drink and a joyful conversation when a juvenile brown bear was sighted coming towards the landing site. all passengers immediately proceeded to the Zodiacs whilst the bear checked our camp. Thanks to a great response from the guests and an outstand-ing teamwork from the expedition Team, the emer-gency evacuation from Cape Yapon proceeded very well and everyone made it safely back to the ship.

ОхотскГородок Охотск с населением около 5000 человек встретил нас традиционным хлебом с солью. Мы посетили центр национальных культур, чтобы увидеть палатки местных пле-мен, традиционные предметы быта и танцы. Другим инте-ресным моментом были тра-диционные блюда, некая смесь русской и коренной кухни. Наконец, я попытался бросить лассо с 12 метров, но промах-нулся три раза, хотя улыбчи-вый инструктор помогал мне, советуя целиться правее. Определенно я не заработал на ужин сегодня.

Талан и ЗавьяловаМы шли в море вдоль берега и заметили несколько бурых медведей на косогоре. Один

из них начал ковылять вниз по склону, вскарабкиваясь на кам-ни и выискивая листья и траву повкуснее. Он подходил ближе и ближе. Безусловно, он мог учуять наш запах, и это должно было нас насторожить. Но нет - время от времени он глядел в нашу сторону, принюхиваясь, но ветер дул нам навстречу, а плохое зрение косолапого не позволяло нас увидеть. Все же он спустился к самой кромке воды и лег на камне, скрестив лапы и пристально глядя на нас. Невероятно!!!! Он был так близко, что можно было увидеть его массивные когти-стые лапы и складки шерсти на мощном теле. При этом небольшие глаза на грозной морде видели плохо, и он явно опирался на чутье и слух. Я никогда не испытывал ни-чего подобного. Видеть совер-шенно дикое существо на та-

ком близком расстоянии и так долго – невероятная удача и, возможно, единственный шанс в жизни.

ЯпонМыс Япон – самая Северная точка нашего путешествия. Мы смогли насладиться живопис-ной прогулкой вдоль побере-жья и в тундре, в то время как персонал ресторана подготовил небольшой пикник на берегу. КвачинаЭто плавание к берегу на Зо-диаках было почти сюрреали-стическим. Поверхность океана была гладкая как стекло до са-мого горизонта. Высадившись в дельте реки Квачина, мы гурьбой приня-лись искать и выкапывать из земли сокровища – японские стеклянные поплавки. Эти шары, обвитые холщевой сет-кой, порой сохраняются здесь десятилетиями, выброшенные океаном на пляж, и становят-ся настоящим фантастическим сувениром на память об Охот-ском море.

Петропавловск-Кам чатскийПосле целого дня путешествия вдоль побережья Камчатки

мы прибыли в столицу. Когда представляешь город на краю Российской Федерации в 8-ми часах полета от Москвы, рису-ются картины приграничного анклава, закрытого от посто-ронних глаз. Но мы увидели нарядных обеспеченных жите-лей на больших внедорожниках и много новых разноцветных зданий на живописных склонах вулкана.Местный музей естественной истории поразил фантастиче-скими чучелами животных. А русский православный храм, построенный в 2000-ом году и освященный в 2010-м, впечат-лил своими сияющими маков-ками. Остановились мы и на местном рынке, где прилавки были завалены местными све-жими морепродуктами. Емко-сти с икрой и массивные мас-сивные туши лосося заставили обильно выделяться желудоч-

ному соку.

ШумшуНаш круиз продолжился на юг вдоль заснеженной оконечно-сти Камчатки. Ясным утром на горизонте показались Куриль-ские острова. Это был Шумшу. Распределившись по лодкам, мы плыли в зарослях ламинарий, как вдруг огромные бородатые головы стали высовываться из воды. Морские выдры лежали в водорослях кверху брюхом, и мы защелками камерами в наде-жде получить хорошие снимки этих милых хищников.

Going ashore by Zodiac was almost a surreal experience as the ocean was so flat and calm that it blended right into the horizon in the same flat, gray mist as the sky. everyone who came ashore on the low, flat beach running parallel to the Kvachina River joined the treasure hunt for Japanese glass fishing floats. Walking south along the beach, it was not hard to find these beautiful glass balls in and amongst the driftwood on the shore –quite fantastic “antique” souvenirs of the Sea of Okhotsk.

we arrived at the capital city.When i had thought about a city on the edge of the Russian federation some 8 hours flight from Mos-cow, i had thought of a typical border town, a law unto its own and a city run by those who prefer to shun the light of the central administrative region. But most impressive was the evidence of new rich-es, not only in the fancy big SUV type cars but in a

lot of the new different coloured buildings as well.The tour we took to get an overview of the city included a stop at the Natural History Museum, with an amazing exhibit of stuffed animals. Our next point of call was the new Russian Orthodox Church; construction had started in 2000 and it had been consecrated in 2010. We also stopped at the local market, which had a luscious display of local, fresh produce. Certainly the huge tubs of salmon roe and massive fresh salmon filets where enough to get the digestive juices flowing.

Y June 27, 2014 - Shumshu island We still sailed south along the snow-covered

tip of Kamchatka on this clear morning to reach our first destination in the Kuril islands, Shumshu. We headed for a large kelp area ahead and already saw some huge bearded heads popping up on the way. Sea otters resting in the kelp, belly-up, so we could get some really nice shots of these cute carnivores.

went to Gagarin Park, where all of us ended the morning with a traditional performance of Rus-sian song and dance, which featured an audience participation segment involving a few of our own travellers. Great show!!! More vodka was offered and tasted, which i really enjoyed!

However, later we had the opportunity to expand the area and the question was what to build on it. it is quite logical “to settle” crocodiles next to the snakes. Rl: Can you describe the Crocodile World complex?

aRtem: at the entrance is a unique museum. Here visitors can learn that crocodiles were a part of human history from the very beginning of civilization. We show reptile mummies and some sarcophagi in which they were buried. Our museum is designed to evoke respect for these ferocious creatures. Not so much fear and terror, but rather respect … and maybe a little fear because of their strength!

This means that the property here is 3 – 4 times more cost effective compared say to Mediterranean countries in europe where the season lasts only 3 – 4 months a year. Your very own dream house is hardly possible to be built in most european countries: you should follow the existing historical style of surroundings. So no "infinity" pool or panoramic windows. in Phuket, almost nothing limits your imagination. There are reasonable restrictions on height, density and proximity to the coast – and that's basically all. High prices for quality property in europe starting from € 3,5 – 4

thousand per sq. m. even in “cheap” Spain or Montenegro are caused by high labor costs. Property in Thailand as a whole is not so expensive. But Phuket is a resort and here, as in life in general, quality cannot be cheap. Unlike in europe the global crisis hasn’t virtually affected the island prices. Mass demand (and supply) just shifted towards cheaper projects. Premium villas prices still start from € 2 – 3 mil. with a very few exceptions. Say we at Vista del Mar managed to make luxury sea view villas of 300 sq. m just for € 500 – 700 thousand. Unique price for the product of such a quality both for Phuket and europe!
