When it comes to living and learning, Qingdao is certainly one of Asia’s best locations. The diversity of education options available to a population of around 4,000 Western foreigners is unmatched. Whether following the National Curriculum for England and IGCSE route (YCIS and Oxford College) or taking SATs and AP classes (ISQ, QISS, NSWE, QAIS), families can choose the school site and faculty that they feel is right for their child.

For this guide, Redstar contacted all of Qingdao’s international schools as well as kindergartens, and asked them to provide tuition, demographic and curriculum information. If a school is not included in this volume, it means merely that they did not provide this information to us.

Achieving Tearless Goodbyes

As a mother of three and an early childhood teacher for 14 years, I have had my struggles with my own children’s and my young students’ separation anxieties. I know first hand how painful separation anxiety can be for parents and children. My oldest son was a static cling baby. He had a terrible time when I left him for any reason; with a babysitter, to go for a ‘mommy walk’, to go to the Nursery at church, then eventually to go to preschool. He did not want to go and made his opinion very clear. In the car he would take off his shoes and socks telling me that he was not planning on getting out of the car at preschool! When I would finally get his shoes and socks back on and get him into the classroom he would cry and cling to me, begging me not to leave him. His teacher was always kind and loving and assured me he would be OK. It always broke my heart as I walked away, having to deal with my feelings of guilt and second-guessing. As an early childhood teacher, I have had many reoccurrences of the scenes that I experienced with my son, except I was the teacher offering love and encouragement to both the child and the parent. Separation anxiety occurs in children’s lives for both brief and extended separations. Separation anxiety is a young child’s way of saying how much they really don’t want to say goodbye. I am pleased to share with you mom’s, dads, and caregivers some gentle solutions to prepare your child over the summer months for school and help them to say goodbye, a happy wave, and a smile.

Parting Dos and Dont’sDO: Keep your good-byes short and sweet. In doing so, you convey the message that you have confidence in your child’s ability to cope.DON’T: Hover around. Your child will sense your anxiety, and this will make it more difficult for him/her to calm down.

DO: Tuck a family picture or a loving reminder in your child’s backpack for him/her to look at later in the day. Elizabeth Pantley, author of The No Cry Sleep Solution, developed a “magic bracelet” - a beaded bracelet with a love saying for each colour bead - for her son to ease the pain of teary farewells.DON’T: Sneak out. You want your child to know unequivocally that he/she can trust you.

DO: Develop loving good-bye routines. I have seen the kiss-hug-nose-rub routine used by moms and children successfully.DON’T: Bargain or bribe your child to behave. Your little one should be allowed his/her feelings.

DO: Send clear messages. Your children need to know that you expect them to go to school no matter how much they fuss, cry or stamp their feet.DON’T: Take your school-aged child home. If you do, you send the message that if your child cries enough he/she won’t have to stay.

schools • table 8

DO: Invite children from the class to your home, so your child can forge friendships that will make the transition easier.DON’T: Get upset. By keeping an upbeat and positive attitude about your child’s school, teacher and friends, you’ll help your child feel safe and enjoy his/her time at school.

DO: Ask your spouse or another family member to take a turn dropping your child off, or pick up one of your child’s classmates on the way to school, and your problems may disappear with lightning speed.DON’T: Discuss problems with the teacher in the morning. Save conversations and questions for the end of the day.

DO: Involve the teacher. You need someone on the other end who will greet your child and ease the transition.DON’T: Be surprised if you solve the problem and it reoccurs after holidays and sick days.

DO: Believe in your child’s ability to make positive changes.

Remember: Separation anxiety means that a strong and loving bond exists between you and your child.

“I like Model United Nations because it’s a great opportunity for me to deal with various global issues.”-Josh Kim (Disarmament Commission Deputy President)

“I love MUN because I can share ideas with other people from different backgrounds.” -Stephan Baik (Delegate of USA)

Model United Nations (MUN) is a student-led simulation that focuses on educating participants in current events, globalisation, diplomacy and cultural awareness. Using the setting of the United Nations, students take on roles of country delegations and work on solving important world issues. Each participant is responsible to research and represent their country’s policies and attitudes while trying to compromise and relate to other participants. The ultimate goal of each conference is to come up with realistic solutions, policies and action papers that are agreed on by the majority of delegates.

Hundreds of MUN conferences take place all over the world and are comprised of thousands of students from almost every corner of the globe. This multi-cultural collaboration allows students to interact with diverse perspectives and gain a better understanding of the world they live in by going to new places, meeting new people and dealing with issues relevant in today’s society.

In addition to the relational and cultural benefits of MUN, students also gain important life skills that can be used in their future career paths. Delegates make speeches in front of their peers, practice good debating techniques, think critically about difficult topics and for many second language learners, improve their English-speaking abilities.

Compromising, speaking diplomatically, doing proper research, and following procedures are also important tools acquired by being involved in MUN.

To help equip local students with a better sense of global community, International School of Qingdao created Model United Nations | International Schools of China (MUNiSC). MUNiSC began in 2009 with just a handful of schools from China but almost doubled in size in 2010 by adding several new schools from Qingdao and two schools from South Korea.

MUNiSC 2011 was held February 24-26 at Le Meridien Hotel. It included nine schools from all over Asia and was attended by more than 250 advisors, delegates and administrative staff. During the three day conference, the students were divided into six different types of committees including the General Assembly, Disarmament Committee, Human Rights Committee, Economic and Social Council, Advisory Panel and Security Council. Delegates spent many hours writing, revising and debating resolutions written on each topic assigned to their committee. These topics included issues like cyber-security, human rights in North Korea, disarmament in Africa and Iranian nuclear holdings. At the end of the conference, 22 resolutions and three action papers were passed. Because of the high quality of debate, excellently trained committee presidents, and many new-found friendships, MUNiSC 2011 was considered a great success.

“MUNiSC has the highest quality of debate of all the conferences that I’ve been to.”-Susan Bae (Delegate of Saudi Arabia)

“I like MUNiSC because my committee was like family…we all respected each other and had fun discussing about Israeli-Palestinian issues with passion.” -Jinie Yoon (Advisor of Turkey)

Work on MUNiSC 2012 has already begun. The website is updated, school invitations have been sent and topics have

been chosen. It is anticipated that it will be an exceptional conference, one of smaller forums,

highly trained leaders and superior debate. If you would like additional information

Originally from South Korea, Yooin Cho graduated from International School of Qingdao in 2008 and has since been excelling in her course work in graphic design at the prestigious School of Visual Arts in New York City, while interning at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in the graphic design department. At SVA, Yooin has participated in honours workshops with John Jay, W+K. In April 2011, Yooin won the Brand New Award for her work rebranding materials for the Neue Galerie. Other achievements include honours at SVA in her Junior Portfolio review, the Henry Wolf Scholarship and the Silas Rhodes scholarship.

Describe some of the projects that you have worked on.

I focused on identity/branding projects this year but also include packaging design, editorial and exhibition design. I like identity/branding projects since I get to visualise from the smallest design elements to the largest projects, and there are so many ways that everything can be handled.

What role does design work like yours play in today’s economy?

“Every company has to connect with their customers and eventually sell their products. It’s very important to please the audience and to persuade them to participate in what the organisation is offering.” This is kind of the textbook answer, but honestly I only do design because I love designing things.

Do you have a sense of what your work life will look like after you graduate?

I don’t know where I will end up since I was raised in many different countries. I love New York since I can learn so much here and also interact with so many different cultures at the same time. Moreover, it’s always busy which keeps me aware of what’s going on in the world (in a good way).

Planning to attend a US university? Eric Blocher

Getting ready for university in the US can be a long, challenging process, not just because of all the hard work that goes into becoming ‘university material’. Even if you’ve starred in school plays, led the basketball team to the championships, devoted all your free time to charity and describe yourself as 4.2, 2370, and 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, you still have to jump through the long series of hoops that is the Application Process if you want to enroll in a four-year college.

You have to submit grades, have standardised test scores sent, ask for letters from teachers and other people who know you. Miss a deadline (even for ‘legitimate’ reasons like, “My teacher didn’t have time to finish a letter of recommendation,”) and your application won’t even be opened. Fortunately, we’ve been there, and we made it (so it can’t be that hard). See below for a rough guide to your own college application process.

Freshman YearFor the next four years, make sure that you are always getting a healthy dose of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Social Sciences and Language. Ask your teachers for help if you need it, and if you realise that you’re in way over your head, change classes. Universities want people who know their own strengths and actively pursue their interests.

Junior YearAutumnThere are thousands of colleges and universities in the US, and you can’t go to all of them, so you’ll want to do a little investigating. Think of people you admire, or who are doing what you want to do, and find out where they studied. You’re actually most likely to get into and stay in an American university if a family member or close friend also attended. If you’re interested in a particular subject, google ‘(name of subject) university programs’ and you may be directed to a list of notable institutions. In these days of online profiles and databases, this is much easier than it was even ten years ago. Inform yourself about what universities are available, and what it would mean (in terms of cost, lifestyle, and opportunities) for you to attend.

If you find a few schools you like, review their application requirements and deadlines. Remember, missing a single deadline can mean throwing away years of hard work.

Talk to AP class coordinators about taking the exams in May. Register for any exams that you plan to take. (Some students will start taking AP exams in Sophomore year.) These scores will burnish your application, and they might count for college credit. apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/Controller.jpf

13universities

SpringPlan when you will take the SAT and SAT Subject tests - they are offered January, March, May, June. Virtually all universities in the US request SAT scores; many also require or appreciate a few SAT Subject test scores. sat.collegeboard.comBegin brainstorming about events that have impacted your life, or subjects that you have a deep personal experience with, or characters who have influenced your development as a person. You will likely need to write a few essays of 250 words or more on topics of this nature for each application you submit next Autumn, and it would be wise to do some preparation work during Summer vacation.AP tests are at the beginning of May!

Senior YearAugustReview the current application requirements for the universities you want to apply to, and download their application forms. Start a folder where you can place required documents for each school. Many schools let you submit most of the materials online, but it will help to first fill the form out offline so that you know in advance what information will be needed. Note the application deadlines for each school!

Register for SAT (if you want to take it again) and SAT Subject tests. Tests are offered October, November, and December. Get the SAT codes for the universities you are applying to, so that you can have your scores sent directly to them.If any of the universities you are applying to accept the Common Application, download that form as well from www.commonapp.org. Register for TOEFL or other English proficiency test (non-English speaking nationalities).Fill out the personal/family information in your applications.

OctoberEarly decision applications are often due by the end of October!Make sure you have confirmed who will be writing any letters of recommendation that you will need. Finish your first drafts of any essays required for your applications, and see if someone qualified can offer comments for you.

If you are applying as an international student, you will need to submit a form declaring how you or your family will pay for your education. Download this form for any schools you will be going to, and have your parents help you fill it out.

Also, if you are an international student, you will need to have a passport with at least six months validity when you apply for your student visa. If your passport will expire within the next 18 months, apply for renewal now.

NovemberArrange for official copies of your secondary school transcripts, certified by the relevant school administrator. You will need one official transcript for each university you are applying to.Apply to take any SAT tests again in December if you feel it will help your chances.

DecemberPut any finishing touches on your essays. Gather all of the materials together: application forms; letters of recommendation; transcripts; essays; anything else that a school has mentioned to augment your application. Double

check any addresses you are sending the materials to. Put your completed applications in the mail before the deadline.

FebruaryIf you are an American citizen, sit down with your parents to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is a US government service that helps citizens identify grants and low-interest loans that they may be eligible for which will help pay for their university education.

AprilEnjoy your acceptance letters! If you get placed on a waiting list at one of the schools you really wanted, take it (see sidebar) - and in your response, let the admissions department know that you are very interested in attending.

If accepted as an international student, you will need to apply for an F-1 Student Visa before you can attend university. As soon as you are accepted, even if you’re not absolutely sure that you want to study in the US, make an appointment to interview for a visa. This time of year, you’ll probably have to schedule over sixty days in advance! You’ll have plenty of time to make your final decision after you schedule the appointment; if you wait even a week to decide, you may not be able to schedule an interview before your planned travel date. http://beijing.usembassy-china.org.cn/niv_student.htmlGet your non-refundable enrollment deposit ready.

MayAP Tests - sure, these challenging courses have done their job of looking good on your application, but if you earn top marks of 4 or 5, you can normally apply the class toward your university General Education requirements. This means you can either earn your degree more quickly, take a lighter load of classes and have time for other things, or jump more into challenging upper division coursework during your first year. Even if you’ve already been accepted to Yale, it’s still worth taking the tests.

SeptemberOnce you’re there, keep in mind that college is a total experience, and you’ll learn much more than can be taught in a classroom. Make opportunities for yourself, and have fun! And don’t forget to call your Mom.

Common ApplicationIt takes a long time to write your address, list your classes and test scores, and craft two or three brilliant essays for each individual university. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just fill it out once? For 400+ American universi-ties (from state schools to Princeton), you can! Check the member colleges and universi-ties at commonapp.org to see if any of your schools are listed, then check each college’s website for the Com-mon Application Supplement.

It will likely save you a lot of time in your application.

注册SAT(如果你想再考一次的话)以及SAT科目考试。

Early Decision? Waitlist? Most college-bound students will apply to at least three schools. Schools can only ‘accept’ as many students as they have room for - but many of the students they accept will ultimately choose to go to another school. So schools have developed two ways to refine the process. First, if there’s one school you would totally go to if you got in, you may be able to apply ‘early decision’. This means sending your application in October, and hearing back in January. But it also means that you’re committed if you get in. This helps them avoid the sting of rejection, guaranteeing that more of the students they accept will actually follow through with enrollment.

At the other end of the acceptance envelope excitement, some students who apply ‘regular decision’ will receive no-tices of being placed on a waiting list. These are students who meet the university’s requirements but did not make the Admissions Department’s (often very arbitrary) first cut. If you get on a waiting list at a school that you really want to go to, it pays to contact them ASAP to let them know they’re still your top choice. And if you’ve decided to go elsewhere, it is courteous to let the school know that they can remove your name and consider other students instead.

Deferred AdmissionYou’ve been accepted to the university of your dreams, but Uncle Zhou is leading a nine-month round-the-world jun-ket to promote beach volleyball, and he’s asked if you want to come along as an intern. Before you say, “Sorry, I have to study,” keep in mind that universities benefit by drawing students with rich life experiences, and the school that has accepted you will most likely be happy to let you enroll the following year. But let them know as soon as possible, so that they can move down the wait list to fill your spot.

“What Does Your School Mean to You?”Quotes from YCIS students

21schools • ycis

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

The schools our children need today should reflect the progress the world has seen during previous years. The education our children receive should be different so as to equal the expectations of the world’s future. The friends we meet do not necessarily hail from the same town. Even the food types we eat are often produced in other continents, manufactured in a foreign country and made available in our local supermarket. With globalisation as a norm, a one-state or one-nation education system no longer suffices to prepare our children for the challenges the future will bring.

YCIS has pioneered a new paradigm in international education. We define an international education by what goes on inside the student. It is about the internal transformation of the child. This is affected by the international school’s culture, which is created by the teaching and learning environment, the administration, the overall content and the process which links to the character formation of the child. The international education ethos that Yew Chung reflects can be seen in the content and process of education that leads our students to an inner transformation whereby they are both Eastern and Western adaptable.

Here follow a few reflections from current parents about their journey with YCIS.

“My sons started with YCIS at the age of 4 & 6 and with great pleasure, I would like to say that they are growing into more responsible and organised children. The school provides my children a different world. The programme very strongly reflects the vision and strength of YCIS. The school is large enough to offer a wide curriculum, yet small enough to retain a friendly community atmosphere with lots of teacher time and attention available to each individual child. The best compliments come from my children - they come home happy and look forward to going back the next day. These may be simple and honest words but say a great deal about the efforts the school team puts in.” Mrs. Anita Tiwari, mother of two YCIS children for four years.

Mrs. Kim, mother of children in Years 7 and 9, says, “I have a good understanding of YCIS’s curriculum because my son studied at YCIS Shanghai before moving here. The teaching method at YCIS has proved its strengths over the long school history; this gives me confidence in it. Both my children have shown some transformation while studying at YCIS. One of these is that they understand and respect different

cultures and the thoughts of students of other nationalities, while spending time with their

classmates from France, Germany, Singapore, America, England and many more. YCIS Qingdao has a ‘homey’ atmosphere. Not only students themselves but also students and teachers are close enough to comfortably talk with each other. Students are involved with character development activities, so are not bystanders, but active ‘doers’. As a result, my children have become proactive, which is another transformation. I also appreciate that my children now search materials and initiate studying on their own accord, instead of being forced to learn or trying to memorise everything in textbooks.”

Mrs. Manuel is mother to two secondary students who had been with YCIS Beijing for eight years before joining YCIS Qingdao two years ago.

She explains, “Yew Chung International School goes by the vision, to mould lifelong learners. I can honestly say, and without boasting, that my children are turning out to be just that. Their love for books was cultivated in the early years and has developed within them the desire to read voraciously. YCIS invested in the learning of both Chinese and English; this is evident in that the class is under the care of both a Western teacher and a Chinese teacher. Learning Chinese in the early part of their education was accessible throughout the day. It was not just an hour lesson on language, but deeper because of the co-teaching philosophy.”

In order to be competitive, our children need a global education that instils in them an inquisitive mind, an ability to communicate and work with people from different cultures that speak different languages and have strong moral values, thus preparing them to face unforeseen obstacles in the future. Therefore both parents and educators now look beyond the bricks and walls of classrooms and facilities, to find the right institution that can provide a global education for our children to excel in the future. A happy child is a learning child.

It’s more than an education. It’s what’s inside that counts.

The Beauty of Bilingual Learning

Educational specialists and research institutes are in agreement that learning more than one language at any given time is beneficial, on many levels. Medical research on brain development proves that the earliest possible exposure to more than one language increases the functional capacity of the brain.

Tuning into Languages“The idea that children exposed to two lan-guages or more from birth become confused or that they fall behind monolingual children is a common misconception,” says Janet Werker, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia who studies language acquisition in bilingual babies. “Growing up bilingual is just as natural as growing up monolingual,” says Werker, whose own research indicates babies of bilingual moth-ers can distinguish between languages even hours after birth. “There is absolutely no evidence that bilingual acquisition leads to confusion or even delay to full development,” she said.

Bilingual (or multiple language) people have to do something that monolinguals don’t do — they have to keep the two (or more) languages separate. Bialystok, at York University in Toronto, compares this action to tuning into the right signal on a radio or television: The brain has to keep the two channels separate and detect them independently.

“The brain has a perfectly good function to per-form just that — it’s the executive control system. It focuses attention on what’s important and ignores distraction, enhancing the concentration. Therefore, for a bilingual or multiple speaker, the executive control system is used in every sentence they utter. That’s what makes it strong,” said Bialystok.

Training the BrainMaintaining the engagement of this executive control function is a form of mental exercise, explains Bialystok, and some researchers believe that this can be beneficial for the brain’s develop-ment. Multiple language speakers have been

shown to perform better on a variety of cognitive tasks, and one study Bialystok did found that dementia set in four to five years later in people who spent their lives speaking two languages instead of one.

Languages are a ToolToday, and in the future even more so, we travel extensively; either for further studies, internships, employment, business or pleasure. With the continual closing gaps between continents, the east and west in particular, we are facing a new paradigm.

Bilingual Development at YCISYCIS students follow the path of language devel-opment from as early as age 3 in kindergarten; with the unique combined care from one Chinese and one native English speaking co-teacher. The pattern follows through in Primary classrooms too. Students can learn Chinese as a First Lan-guage or as a Second Language; likewise English will be delivered to meet the requirements.

The timetable offers students some co-taught lessons which witnesses students using both Chi-nese and English fluidly in their communication. Vocabulary and expression is equally represented in these co-taught lessons.

YCIS joins the best of east and west with lan-guage, knowledge and cultural sensitivity; creat-ing an environment unmatched by any other. The YCIS student converses in English and Chinese with a fluency that reflects a global mindset for a far reaching future.

In Person with Chris VicariAward-winning principal comes to QAIS

Qingdao American International School’s incoming Headmaster Chris Vicari started his career in Education while teach-ing English as a Fulbright Scholar in Bologna, Italy, where he learned that communication and self-expression are the keys to developing student confidence and self-esteem, while building bridges between diverse cultures and commu-nities. He has so far visited 28 countries, often leading student delegations on life-changing experiences beyond their own borders.

In 2006, while teaching International Baccalaureate (IB) English at Yonkers High School in New York, he was selected as USA Disney Teacher of the Year for High School English, from over 70,000 nominees. The award recognised his creativity and innovation in teaching, and reinforced his philosophy that education should be a multi-sensory experience which encourages students to pursue learning as a lifelong endeavour.

What approach or educational philosophy do you bring to your position as Headmaster at QAIS?When I returned to the United States from my tenure as a Fulbright Scholar, I taught Italian at New York University before accepting a position as the International Bac-calaureate (IB) English teacher at Yonkers High School in New York. Our IB curriculum emphasised student-centred learning, performance-based assessments, and seeing the world from multiple perspectives. We read literature from around the world and from various historical peri-ods, which allowed students to develop empathy and a sense of interconnectedness with the global community. As Yonkers High School rose to #37 in US News and World Report National Rankings, I realised that the IB philoso-phy was a powerful, enriching educational program that was preparing our students for the unique technological, environmental, and communication challenges of the 21st century. Students who completed our Full IB Pro-gram were accepted to some of the world’s best colleges (including Harvard, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, and NYU), and several had accumulated so many credits in high school that they entered college as sophomores.

We are guided by the same values at QAIS. While we are preparing to begin the IB application process, we offer rigourous curriculum (including AP classes) that fosters student development across disciplines and equips students to take on global challenges. As educators, we have high expectations of ourselves - 40% of our teach-ers hold a Master’s or other advanced teaching degree, and I’ll be receiving my doctorate this Autumn.

What developments are you excited about at QAIS in 2011-12?As the new Headmaster at QAIS, I hope to tap into the unique talents and enthusiasm of the dedicated staff and student body and work diligently toward designing an internationally-based, enriching curriculum that empha-sizes mathematics, science, language acquisition, as well as student creativity and confidence.

Ultimately, education is about opening up avenues of opportunities so that the ‘whole child’ can flourish in a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment. At QAIS, our goal is to allow students to feel free and inspired so that they can develop a deep love and respect for nature, while becoming responsible, tolerant, compassionate citizens who value peace and a shared brotherhood with the global community. We do this through regular field trips at all ages, and encouraging our students to engage with their parents and the local community to compliment what they learn in the classroom. This sense of empathy and interconnectedness will lead us one step closer to a world that values human rights, equity, and the environment so that all life is revered for its unique gifts while our highest potentialities can be realised as a species.

I am so excited about the upcoming year at QAIS and look forward to working with the experienced and professional staff to create a world-class learning com-munity that students, teachers, and parents alike can all be proud of.

Learning is Fun!Montessori is education in action

When it comes to mastering skills, children thrive in an environment that lets them play and explore indepen-dently. Qingdao American International School’s Montes-sori Pre-K and Kindergarten programs let children (ages 3-6) indulge their curiosity about the world around them. A Montessori classroom is an environment where kids choose what they want to play with, and in the process, learn first-hand at their own pace. The Montessori-trained teacher sets up blocks, colouring equipment, puzzles and other materials, demonstrates how things can be used, and then facilitates the children’s own creative explo-ration. Montessori kids go on to take an active role in their education that is difficult to achieve through other methods - it’s as if they feel like learning is fun!

QAIS Montessori teacher Soraya Tohidi received her certification from Association Montessori Internationale in 1997, and has recently been developing the Pre-K and Kindergarten programs at Qingdao American Inter-national School to bring them in line with Montessori principles. She will be joined by a Montessori-certified teacher (from the US) in the 2011-12 school year, and supported by Principal Chris Vicari, who is himself Montessori-trained.

A core principle of the Montessori method is that children will spend their own time to learn the skills that they need, given the right tools. While the teacher is still an essential part of the classroom, the act of learning is hands-on and child-centred; the teacher isn’t at the front of the class imparting information, but among the

children, helping them (where needed) to discover for themselves. “One of the differences in teaching by the Montessori method,” Soraya says, “Is that you see the child as a whole person for who they will become, rather than something to pour information into.” So what does this mean in the classroom? For one thing, the environment is prepared for children to be able to access the activities that they want to pursue. Soraya explains the freedom of choice within the classroom as, “No one is ever cornered and forced to do an activity.” The children develop as their interest directs after a dem-onstration from the teacher. Mastering putting on their shoes, brushing their teeth, controlling scissors, colour-ing within the lines - the children educate themselves through careful guidance rather than an overly didactic teaching style, allowing them to understand these skills independently. This kind of learning goes beyond the classroom as well, and parental engagement is actively sought.

Soraya depicts the Montessori Method as, “Seeing children as having great potential, which manifests itself given the right environment.” In doing this a child is set up for life in their own self-confidence, meaning that even if the child is no longer educated via the Montessori method they have already developed their ‘concentra-tion’ which is imperative to their intellectual and emo-tional development, and in turn preparing them for life.

Why choose NSWE? Our institute implements international standards, using a base American curriculum that incorporates the PRC Chinese suggested curriculum. This balanced curriculum is equally as important as our emphasis on our Balanced Bilingual Curriculum & Literacy Development Program. By using both English and Chinese, even our early primary students function bilingually quickly. But still our students excel further, not only learning in two languages, but also learning mathematics, science, social studies, music, art and P.E. After they exceed at this, our students then move onto our High School Elective program which includes AP courses, TOEFL, SAT and HSK preparation. However, without our first-rate faculty NSWE would not have the outstanding bilingual education and students that it has today. Our teachers are not just TESOL certified but are K-12 Credentialed Western and Chinese teachers, schooled and experienced in modern teaching strategies and practices, with many having obtained Master’s Degrees. NSWE offers a loving environment, by treating our students as individuals and working with their different strengths and learning styles we can and are proud to offer a caring approach towards children. Our exceptional faculty of teachers has experienced a wide variety of modern child-development theories allowing us to bring different perspectives and provide the learning environment that NSWE does.

We have intertwined the experience of progressive Western educators and accomplished Chinese education leaders to work in harmony to provide solid leadership and to guide the school community along its learning journey. Because of this leadership understanding NSWE makes it possible to provide a tuition that is almost half the price of other international schools whilst still providing a well-rounded curriculum and culturally diverse experience. As well as this NSWE offers short and long term exchange programs in partnership with The Haverford School, an elite Ivy League prep school in the USA. Together we have developed the ‘2+2’ study abroad program, developing Grades 9 to 12. NSWE graduates have been offered places in a long list of top universities including NYU, the University of Sydney,

the University of Peking as well as many top Korean and Japanese Universities, proving that NSWE bilingual education meets a high international standard.

Qingdao Galaxy School puts the ‘environment’ back in ‘learning environment’. Our school is located in Licang District, covering 13 acres near the Licun River. Streams, ponds, hills, flowers and trees amount to more than amazing scenery; this diversity - in our campus ecology and reflected in the unique buildings that hold our classrooms - the environment rings of our school’s holistic approach.

We believe that the natural combination of landscape, scenery and facilities creates a healthy environment for learning. Outdoor activities are part of our curriculum, and students can try their hand at organic gardening, or spend time in our greenhouse. It’s an environment ideal for engaging minds, nurturing interaction and exploring the natural world. If a typical campus represents the proverbial ‘box’, we very literally encourage our students to think outside it.

Since our school was founded, our administration has been based on humane development, accentuating students’ personalities, and we continue to push for top academic opportunities for our students. We go far beyond China’s compulsory 9-year curriculum. The scientific and comprehensive course structure not only helps our students breeze through the junior graduation exam, but also enables them to study abroad or in international schools, and provides them the capabilities of lifelong learning and sustainable development of themselves. The galaxy is huge, and our students shine bright.

The sea is wonderful to look at, but we in Qingdao may wonder what’s going on beneath the waves! Fortunately we have two well-regarded aqariums, making for an educational or reflective excursion anytime. Here’s our shell-by-shell comparison.

The Qingdao Aquarium opened in 1932, later adding incredible displays to become Underwater World, undisputed local King of Sea Experiences. But in 2006, Polar Ocean World came along with a sharper theme and more mammals. Today, they are engaged in a fierce fight to win your heart and become Qingdao’s coolest ocean simulation destination. Let’s see who’s the bigger fish!

Round 1: DecorGeneral atmosphere is certainly an important feature for any ‘attraction’. In Underwater World, the visitors will walk along dark rooms, sometimes reminiscent of the rainforest or the tropical seas. But to be fair, the place could use a lick of paint. Nevertheless, Underwater World deserves kudos for its sunken ship (located in its impressive tunnel - see below) and for its spic-and-span environment. For its part, Polar Ocean World has the advantage of his youth, with a large, bright and modern facility. The investment in the decor does not seem to have been overlooked, since visitors can literally walk in a pirate ship stranded in the icy waters of the Arctic, take pictures in an Arctic village rivaling Whoville, or stroll on the ramparts of a fortified Viking town. There is no doubt here, Polar Ocean World transports to the Far North.Winner: Polar Ocean World

Round 2: AnimalsAfter entertaining, the main purpose of these places is to introduce sea animals of different types. In Underwater World, sharks, sea turtles, crocodiles and a plethora of tropical fishes swim merrily swim in enormous tanks. Some of the weirdest and most impressive species include the

Sea Angel (very aptly named due to his form), the Lionfish and the Foxface. And yes, there are plenty of Clownfish (think ‘Nemo’) to find. The cylindrical acrylic aquarium, the biggest in the world, contains also numerous corals, making it perfect for anyone interested in tropical ecosystems. On the other hand, Polar Ocean World focuses mainly on animals living in the cold waters: Sea Lions, Belugas or different type of Seals. Even though there is a very nice tropical section, the animals seem a little bit less exotic than those of Underwater World. They are generally white, grey and black, seem very friendly but not as spectacularly colourful as some of the Underwater World fishes.Winner: Underwater World

Round 3: Best ShowIs there a better way to entertain visitors than with a show? The Mermaids show at Underwater World lasts only 7 minutes (unless you count the long wait), which it turns out is enough time to play ‘My Heart Will Go On’ twice. If watching swimmers in mermaid costumes saying “Hello!” under the water is your cup of tea, this show is tailored to you. If not, you should probably skip it, or go to Polar Ocean World. Twice a day, seals and dolphins put on a 30 minute show, demonstrating how trainable these marine animals can be. Sitting in a large auditorium (don’t worry, a giant screen presents everything up close), you can see these animals jump, dance and sing all in unison. Lucky visitors will get to kiss a dolphin or seal! Winner: Polar Ocean World

Round 4: Top FeatureThis is it, final round. To get to the soggy heart of

this merciless battle, we will evaluate the ‘top trump’ feature of these two attractions. The most impressive part of Underwater World is certainly

its long tunnel, giving you a 360-degree view from below at the life in its biggest aquarium. Under many tons of water, anyone passing in this

activities

Qingdao’s indoor oceans Simon Grenier

tunnel will really feel walking into the ocean, surrounded by sharks, rays and fish of all types,

all sizes. Polar Ocean World’s best attraction is the open air seals basin, located in the heart of the complex. There, you can closely watch these semi-aquatic mammals swimming and playing like human kids. On request (read if you pay extra money), you can also take pictures with them on a small platform at the edge of the water or feed other sea creatures to them.Winner: Underwater World

The fight is over, and it’s a draw. Of course, each visitor’s preference will depend on what they’re looking for. If you want to see exotic tropical fishes and experience the peculiar sensation of walking under the sea (like the song!), try Underwater World. For those looking for amazing decor and a good show, go to Polar Ocean World instead. In both cases, you will have a great time and learn a lot about our aquatic friends. This battle might be over for now, but the tides can still turn - check them out and let us know what you think!

Yoga for Kids儿童瑜伽 Big benefits for growing minds 成长过程中的受益活动 REDSTAR

With its history stretching back thousands of years on the Indian subcontinent, yoga has blossomed to become a cornerstone of healthy, ‘balanced’ lifestyles for men and women around the world. Fitness centres and studios from Hollywood to the hutongs offer some variety of the low-impact poses, called asanas, which have been shown to increase strength and flexibility, and which are purported to increase focus, relaxation, self-esteem and empathy towards others.

At the same time, the benefits to spiritual and physical development that have made this ancient practice a hit with adults have been gaining momentum in classrooms and playrooms. In particular, the YogaKids programme has caught on in Qingdao as a way to blend the traditional practice of yoga with other activities that stimulate the mind and body. Teachers find ways to link the physical poses to stories, crafts, and a variety of activities that resonate with other modes of learning.

Rita Nielsen had been teaching yoga to adults for several years before training for YogaKids in 2005. “I enjoy the playful, integrative approach that YogaKids provides,” she said, “It addresses the brain, mind, body and spirit in seamless fashion.”

Sophie Maupillier has three young children in Qingdao, and began training to be a YogaKids instructor in 2009. She wanted to share her passion with her kids, while also bringing them into the benefits that she has felt from the practice: “While ‘playing’ yoga, I offer them a multi-dimensional learning experience that will help them to grow healthy and happy.” She is also certified with Kidzyoga, a programme that focuses on offering yoga in schools.

So, how do these classes differ from adult yoga sessions? For one thing, they’re fun - Ms. Maupillier has had children constructing skeletons out of marshmallows and toothpicks to help them conceptualise the human body. They may read a story and act it out in asanas, developing literacy in a way that also incorporates physical activity.

The asanas are always a core component, but they are tailored to the child’s experience - Ms. Nielsen notes that in her older (7-10 year old) classes, kids “like to be upside-down a lot, either in a handstand or a headstand.” This may sound challenging to the uninitiated, but it’s always voluntary. “I never force anyone to do anything they are not comfortable with,” she says. “There is always an alternative pose to empower the moment.”

Rita Nielsen

Sophie Maupillier

Sure, you’ve seen all kinds of fish in tanks at every seafood restaurant in the city, but what about being up close and personal with a Spanish mackerel? Or having a startled octopus blast his wad of ink in your direction and jet away into

the murky, rather shallow depths? You, too can explore the world beneath the Yellow Sea’s waves with the help of the good people at Qian Shui.

Based near the No 1 beach (15 minutes by bus 31 from downtown), this company offers an opportunity for beginners and certified divers to safely explore the local seabed; or, better yet, get a diving certificate so you can go do it in the Philippines!

Beginners go first to the base to choose a package and equipment (included in the price).

The friendly staff help select a suitable combination and have a variety of merchandise related to water sports. You can buy a suit, goggles, fins, or anything else. Once you’re set, the team drives you over to the beach, and there you are! For the amount of time included in your package, you’re free to go looking for that lost beer bottle, or see if you can find Spongebob under a mound of pineapples. At the very least, you should be able to catch some dinner to bring home!

Packages go from 280元 to 1280元 according to your needs (want to get off shore? Take a tour boat out into the bay!). Please call them in the morning before setting out, as high winds and stormy weather make it inadvisable to dive. The staff does not speak English.

“I want kids to have fun, that is my main goal. I really want them to enjoy the time we all spend on the field, and to lead them to the championships someday. Enjoyment is the key to football,” says Patrice, football coach and founder of the Qingdao Football Academy.

Patrice knows what he’s talking about. Having started out as a member of his native Cameroon’s national under-19 football squad, he came to China to share his passion. After having won the University Football Championships with Qingdao University, where he studied Chinese, he joined the semi-professional team in Qingdao.

In April 2010, he started the Qingdao Football Academy (QFA) in Shilaoren.  Every Sunday afternoon, kids 6-13 years old from all over the world meet up in the hills for training. Players are Chinese, American, French, Korean, Ecuadorian. Instruction is in English.

After warmup exercises, children perform drills to increase speed, endurance and teamwork under Patrice’s eccentric supervision - and under the watchful eyes of parents who are very proud to see their offspring responding to the training and playing enthusiastically on the field.

Students are all in different schools and have different nationalities. But in sport, the rules are the same for everyone, and teamwork is essential.

“I send my son here,” says Mandy, whose son is currently enrolled in the Academy. “To make him run and become a team player.“ Playing in a team makes them realise that they must share the spotlight for the team’s sake and victory.

Patrice wants ‘fun’ to stay at the centre of his programme. That’s why the first lesson is free, allowing newcomers to get a feel for the field and of the club’s atmosphere before asking for any fees. But the monthly membership is remarkably low at 300元 for an activity that provides exercise, competition, teamwork and confidence-building. Bring your kids this Sunday!

While the annual Qingdao pantomime isn’t a drama course per se, it is a stimulating and worthwhile opportunity for students who already have an interest in, and aptitude for, performance art. Qingdao International Drama Group (QIDG)has put on these shows for the last 5 years, and popularity has increased exponentially.

The main difference between QIDG’s productions and curriculum/school-based productions is the broad spectrum of ages amongst the cast and crew. The performances are semi-professional shows put on for an audience paying commercial ticket prices. Rehearsal schedules are fairly intense and cover a period of around 6 months. Initially 2 or 3 evenings a week and frequent Saturday afternoons building to 3 to 5 evenings and most weekends during the final 4 or 5 weeks prior to performance.  The level of commitment and discipline required is high so auditioning for and, in particular, accepting a part should not be taken lightly. However, being a part of the production is rewarding and beneficial on many levels.

First and foremost it’s a chance to work with experienced actors who are enthusiastic, committed and dedicated to putting on the best show possible. This gives the younger cast members a bench mark to reach for, and they’ll receive coaching and constructive criticism from the leading actors, choreographers and director. Due to the transient nature of the expat community there are always new people in town who audition for the pantomime; this means more mature people, from diverse backgrounds, who are often taking on an acting role for the first time. Getting to watch how these thespian newcomers cope with learning the ropes and how they integrate with the team is an invaluable lesson in how we still push ourselves to new heights, continuing

our education way beyond school years. There is a very strong emphasis on teamwork, no matter how small the role, participants are all an integral part of the whole picture. There is a fantastic sense of community both on stage and backstage, kids get to work with kids from other schools in addition to interacting with people outside their age group.

The performances are based (loosely) on the British Pantomime tradition, so in addition to acting there are choreographed dance numbers often with singing, comedic skits and audience participation. The value of the experience in terms of self confidence, communication skills, self discipline and teamwork cannot be easily overstated; cast members come away with an increased sense of self worth and faith in their ability.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that the proceeds of the show are given to the Qingdao Expat Charity to help local children in need. The annual pantomime has become a vehicle for raising significant funds through sponsorship and ticket/merchandise sales and the amount raised has increased year on year since its inception. This is a prominent part of the productions raison d’être and ethos, providing an opportunity for service to the community for all participants.

Qingdao International Drama Group pantomimes are performed over a single weekend sometime between mid March and Early May (depending on International School schedules, National & International holidays etc). Audition notices are published in local English Language media and circulated by word of mouth. Alternatively, send an email [email protected] and ask to be put on the mailing list.

I like to ride the bus. I think it’s fun. I get to see the city, at least, whatever is on the route and can be seen under the armpit of the guy next to me. I can get off wherever I want, as long as there’s a stop. I also really love to ride my bike. I can beat traffic and see all kinds of interesting side roads and alleys. If my bike can fit, I can go there.

Language schools and software are great buses that can help us learn things efficiently. But like a bus, they have their own route. I’ll learn what they tell me or what they test me on. Sometimes you have to go through some less useful language to get to what you need. If you need or want really specific stuff, you may never get it.

Kickstart was designed like a bike, to help you discover the language you need and learn it faster. We put some of the most important basics in a 12 hour program. Then we added 30 different techniques that you can use to accelerate and customise your continued learning.

I took a break in the middle of this article to do something we teach in Kickstart. I created an exercise to learn terms related to computers and programming. I need this as I work with our Chinese staff to develop language software. It took about 5 minutes to design the exercise. It will take about 30 minutes to learn it with my assistant. I’ll be using those words and phrases today. This is what Kickstart is all about.

Kickstart is held regularly on the first two Saturdays of the month from 9am-4pm. Custom or corporate sessions available. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Parlez-vous français? Alliance Française immerses you in French culture

What was your first impression of Alliance Française? At the introductory class, the professor was very kind and friendly, and he said, “When you leave today, you will have learned some French.” During the entire class, the professor didn’t speak any Chinese or English, but taught us simple dialogue in

French. And as promised, I learned my first French dialogue: “Bonjour, comment allez vous?” “Très bien, et vous?” I still remember how excited I was. In class, there are a lot of very kind French teachers who greet every student very warmly. The atmosphere there is easy; I can hang out all day! In fact, I quit my job to spend more time there!

How will AF help your career?First of all, taking such a short period of time to master a foreign language makes me very confident, this is most important. It opens up a lot of careers, in enterprises that need people fluent in both English and French. If we cannot build skills such as language, it is difficult to break out from a limited circle or stand out in a certain area.

What are AF activities like?Excellent! I have never done anything like this before. In China, exciting cultural event like these, with original bands, stars, writers, painters, reporters, covering so many various areas of life. My life has become rich with culture - I feel like I get more out of each day! I participate in every event possible, because you never know who you will meet next, how your life will be changed.

• Move to China.• Bring your kid.• Stay there long enough that the experience becomes a part of their life.

Now that you’ve created your very own TCK you should know that making one is much easier than caring for one. But before we get to that, I’d like to touch on a few distinctive features of TCKs.

First, they are different from the kids in China. They are unlikely to ever fit in completely with their Chinese peers. Second, they are different from the kids back home. They may never feel like they completely fit in there again either.

You may start feeling like your child will never fit in anywhere, and you are partly right. While they are usually extremely adaptable, TCKs often feel most at home with other TCKs even if the places they’ve lived are different.

TCKs often have trouble answering the question “Where are you from?” or knowing what country to cheer for in the Olympics or World Cup. This makes them different from you too (have we covered everyone?). You probably know where home is and see your time in China as a temporary stage. TCKs experience it as part of who they are.

Finally, we come to caring for a TCK. Sorry, no easy steps. Here are a few things that tend to help:

Ask. Good questions give kids a place to start and permission to tell us what they are thinking and feeling. At MicMac Global Solutions, we train kids and parents to talk about ‘Yeah Ducks’ and ‘Yuck Ducks’ which make a pair of ducks (paradox). This gives everyone permission to be happy and sad about an event at the same time, something that is a core part of the TCK life.

Listen. You’d be amazed at what a little silence can accomplish after a good question. Our kids get so used to us having the answers that they don’t think we really want to hear theirs. Prove that you really want to hear and learn from them. There is a cultural gap between you and your kids, and bridging it requires a lot of understanding.

Empathise. Have compassion for your child. I think we’re often afraid to acknowledge how hard life can be for our kids because we don’t want to feel guilty for the decisions we’ve made as parents. If the decision was a good one, we can cry with our kids on a hard day without changing our minds about what’s right and good. If the decision was a bad one, we only compound it by failing to acknowledge and feel the

impact on our child. This kind of empathy creates a deeper connection and allows you to deeply experience the good times together as well.

Experience. My kids wanted to try eating silkworms last week. We did it. They were excited about something new and unusual about China and I wanted to encourage that and experience it with them. They are not always adventurous, but I find that their attitude often reflects mine. This will be different for every family, but try to make the most the unique opportunities you have while living here.

As one of my colleagues often says, “There’s probably more to it than that.” There are some excellent resources listed below for further information or you can contact me at [email protected].
