There should be more compassionate listening, to help people see things from our point of view Children and young people are human beings after all. They have opinions, they have feelings, they should have a right to share with society how they feel about things that affect them.

Fyddech chi ddim yn cy� wyno stori am weithle heb gynnal cyfweliad â’r staff, felly y tro nesa byddwch chi’n adrodd stori am ysgol neu ar bwnc sydd yn berthnasol i blant a phobl ifanc, gofynnwch iddyn nhw beth yw eu barn.

Give them a voice. You would not run a story about a workplace without interviewing the staff so when you’re next reporting a story about a school or on a topic relevant to children and young people, ask them what they think.

Juveniles, youngsters, youth: be sensitive when using these words as they’re now usually associated with anti-social behaviour. There is now a shift towards the terms ‘children and young people’.

Antisocial, hooligans, worthless, evil, feral, yob/s, hoodies: should be avoided at all times.

Certain terminology can have a real impact on the self-esteem of children and young people.

‘Gangs of youths’,‘teenage pregnancies’: the combination of words here fuels existing preconceptions surrounding young people. Alternatives include ‘groups of young people’ or ‘young mums’.

Other ideas include looking at the context in greater detail e.g. looking sensitively about the reasons why i.e. is there a particular reason for high rate of pregnancies among young women in a particular area? It’s always worth remembering the impact you have on the misconceptions that exist within society.

STIs, unemployment, pregnancy, housing and bene� t issues, drugs and alcohol: these are things that affect us all. They are not issues that are exclusive to young people, so using ‘gangs of youths’, ‘teenage pregnancies’ just fuel the idea that they are more prevalent among young people.

Some examples of negative reporting:

Youth secures work at a top restaurant There is a danger such headlines may patronise young people. Draw attention away from ages and instead focus on the person’s talent and success.

Youth unemployment rises in Wales This implies that ‘youths’ are lazy. It’s not helpful or constructive.

Revealed: hundreds of Welsh teenagers carrying knives This is sensationalist and implies only young people carry knives. Don’t scare monger, stick to the context and the facts instead.
