Ubicada a 250 kilómetros al sur de Santiago, en el corazón de Chile, la Región del Maule se extiende entre las regiones de O’Higgins y Biobío. El agradable clima templado mediterráneo del Maule, permite que a lo largo de todo el año puedan llegar visitantes a conectarse con un paisaje natural, volcanes, montañas, ríos y playas, y a disfrutar de platos únicos, galardonados vinos, fiestas populares y artesanías típicas.

Llamamos Ramal a la línea férrea secundaria, que se origina desde una red ferroviaria principal. En el caso del Ramal Talca- Constitución es un trazado ferroviario de vía única y trocha métrica.

En cambio, el buscarril es un tipo de vehículo ferroviario de pasajeros, que se utilizó en varias partes del mundo a mediados del siglo XX, principalmente en vías de bajo tráfico.

“Ramal” (branch line) refers to the secondary railway line, which originates from a main rail network. In the case of the Ramal Talca-Constitución is a single-track railway line and metrical gauge.

Instead, the “buscarril” is a type of passenger rail vehicle, or “train bus”, which was used in various parts of the world in the mid-twentieth century, mainly in low-traffic routes.

Inserto en lo más profundo del Chile rural, el recorrido de 88 kms. del Ramal Talca – Constitución, bordea la ribera norte del río Maule por aproximadamente tres horas, recorriendo las comunas de Talca, Maule, Pencahue y Constitución.

Inserted in the depths of Chile, the Ramal Talca-Constitución 88 km journey borders the north bank of the Maule River for about three hours, covering the

communes of Talca, Maule, Pencahue and Constitución.

El Ramal Talca - Constitución: Un Viaje muy particular

Los 88 kms del Ramal Talca- Constitución se pueden recorrer de varias formas: a bordo del buscarril, en auto o bicicleta por los caminos rurales, o navegando a través del Río Maule.

The 88 kms of the Ramal Talca-Constitución can be covered in several ways: on board the bustrain, by car or bike along country roads, or navigating through

Maule River.

1) Buscarril Bustrain:

El servicio de buscarril Ramal Talca –Constitución cuenta con un subsidio al trans-porte público que busca mejorar la conectividad de las localidades ubicadas próxi-mas al Ramal que no tienen otra alternativa de movilización. Por esta razón, la prioridad de transporte la tienen los residentes locales. Para mayor información , visite la web www.tmsa.cl o llame al teléfono 600-585 5000 (call center)

El servicio de buscarril tiene cuatro frecuencias regulares diarias: desde Talca los servicios parten a las 07.15 y 16.30 hrs., y en Constitución, el otro extremo del reco-rrido, a las 07.00 y 16.15 hrs. El viaje dura aproximadamente 3 horas y 27 minutos. Consulte por recorridos turísticos en temporada alta.

El buscarril se detiene en estaciones y paraderos únicamente para subir y dejar pasajeros, con la excepción de la parada en la Estación González Bastías que se extiende a 10 minutos, para realizar el cruzamiento de buscarriles.

IMPORTANTE: Desde agosto de 2012, los servicios sufrirán una modificación y/o atrasos en el tiempo de viaje, ya que se estará trabajando en la rehabilitación de la vía entre Talca y Constitución. Agradecemos su compresión, ya que estos trabajos traerán una serie de beneficios a todos los usuarios de este servicio.

The Ramal Talca-Constitución bustrain service has a public transport subsidy that seeks to improve the connectivity of the communities located near the branch

line that have no alternative mobilization. For this reason, local residents have the priority on transportation. For more information, visit

The bustrain service has four daily regular frequencies: from Talca services depart at 07.15 and 16.30 hrs., and in Constitución, the other end of the route, at

07.00 and 16.15 hrs. The trip takes approximately 3 hours and 27 minutes. Ask for touristic trips during high season.

The bustrain stops at stations only to pick up and drop off passengers, with the exception of the González Bastías station stop where it detains for 10 minutes

to make the bustrain crossing.

IMPORTANT: From August 2012, the services will undergo a change and / or delays in travel time, as there will be maintenance on the track´s restoration

between Talca and Constitución. We appreciate your understanding as this work will bring a number of benefits to all users of this service.


2) En Automóvil By Car:

Otra forma de recorrer el Ramal es en automóvil. Desde Talca tome la ruta K-610, que une Talca y Colín. Desde esta estación no existe una conexión vial directa con las siguientes estaciones, por lo que para continuar el recorrido debe conectar en diferentes rutas.

Desde Colín a Corinto, tome la ruta K-60, continúe por la ruta K-660. Desde Corinto a González Bastías, continúe por la ruta K-660 y tome la ruta M-298 hasta llegar al cruce González Bastías, y siga por ese camino en dirección al Río Maule. Se recomien-da realizar este trayecto en vehículos 4x4 o camionetas ya que debe recorrer fuertes pendientes que en invierno pueden ser intransitables.

Entre González Bastías y Constitución, el buscarril es la alternativa de transporte más expedita para recorrer este tramo, pues los caminos de uso forestal no cuentan con señalización adecuada.

Another way to cover the Ramal is by car. From Talca take Route K-610, which connects Talca and Colín. From this station there is no direct road connection

with the following stations, so to continue the journey you must connect to different routes.

From Colín to Corinto, take Route K-60 and continue on Route K-660. From Corinto to Bastías González, continue on Route K-660 and take Route M-298 to the

junction Bastías González, and follow that road to Maule River. We recommend doing this trip on 4x4 vehicles or trucks since you will have to go through steep

slopes that may be impassable in winter.

Between González Bastías and Constitución, the bustrain is the most expeditious transport choice to travel this stretch, for the forest-used roads do not have

adequate signposting.

3) En Transporte Público By public transport:

Los buses públicos también son una alternativa para recorrer el sector del Ramal Talca-Constitución. Desde el Terminal de Buses Rurales en Talca ( dirección 12 Orien-te con 2 Sur) salen los siguientes servicios:

4) En bicicleta o caminando By bicycle or walking:

En la actualidad, la vía férrea no está habilitada para ser recorrida en bicicleta o ca-minando. Si decide realizar su viaje en bicicleta o caminando, le sugerimos transitar por caminos rurales, que presentan dificultad media a alta.

Today, the railway is not enabled to be explored by bicycle nor walking. If you decide to make your trip by

bike or walking, we suggest you travel on rural roads, which have medium to high difficulty.

• Talca - Corinto: Buses Alce. Lunes a viernes, ocho salidas diarias. Sábados y domingo, tres salidas diarias. Talca - Corinto: Alce Buses. Monday through Friday, eight daily departures. Saturday and Sunday, three daily departures.

• Talca - Las Palmas- Toconey: Recorrido subvencionado. Lunes, miércoles y viernes. Una salida diaria. Talca - Las Palmas-Toconey: Subsidized route. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. One daily departure.

• Talca - Constitución: Varias empresas. Salidas diarias toda la semana. Talca - Constitución: Various companies. Daily departures all week.

Desde el Terminal de Colectivos de Talca, salen servicios a Constitución, Maule y Pencahue, en promedio cada media hora. Los domingos, parten al completar la capacidad del colectivo. Se hacen servicios especiales de traslado, consulte en el terminal.

From Talca´s collective taxis terminal, services depart approx. every half hour to Constitución, Maule and Pencahue. On Sundays, they depart as they fill up.

There are special shuttle services, ask at the terminal.



5) Navegando por el Río Maule Sailing through Maule River:

La navegación por el río Maule es otra interesante alternativa para recorrer el Ra-mal, ya sea en su totalidad o en algunos tramos, y así rememorar los antiguos tiem-pos en que faluchos maniobrados por marinos de agua dulce o guayanes recorrían los puertos y aldeas del Río Maule con gran destreza.

Sailing through Maule River is another interesting possibility to visit the Ramal, either in the whole section or in some parts, remembering the old days when

freshwater sailors, or “guayanes”, maneuvered feluccas through marine ports and villages of Maule River with great skill.

En tren a la costa, historia del Ramal Talca - Constitución.

Hasta mediados del siglo XIX, la navegación del río Maule fue la vía de transporte de personas y productos más expedita entre el valle y la costa.

Las embarcaciones o faluchos eran maniobrados por marinos de agua dulce o guayanes que con gran destreza recorrían los puertos de Perales, cerca del encuentro de los ríos Maule y Loncomilla, y la costa de Constitución, en la desembocadura del Maule.

Las dificultades que presentaba el cruce de la Barra del Maule, las pérdidas de vidas humanas y el cese de la categoría de Puerto Mayor de Constitución en 1883, motivaron el declive de la actividad fluvial y el aislamiento de esta parte de la región.

Until the mid 19h century, navigation on the

Maule River was the most expeditious way for

people and product transportation between

the valley and the coast.

Boats, or feluccas were maneuvered by fres-

hwater sailors, or “guayanes”, who skillfully

would travel the ports of Perales, near where

the rivers Maule and Loncomilla meet, and

the coast of Constitución, at the mouth of the

Maule River.

The difficulties involving the crossing of the Barra del Maule, the loss of human lives and the end of Constitución´s Major Port category in 1883, led to the river

activity´s declination and the isolation of this part of the region.

El Presidente Balmaceda, en cumplimiento de su promesa con los habitantes de Constitución, encomendó al ingeniero Ignacio Vivanco elaborar un presupuesto para la construcción de un ferrocarril desde Talca a Constitución, lo que dio inicio al Ramal que hoy recorremos.

President Balmaceda, fulfilling his promise to the people of Constitución, instructed engineer

Ignacio Vivanco to prepare a budget for the construction of a railway from Talca to Constitu-

ción, giving birth to the branchline on which we travel today.

Debido al carácter aislado de muchas localidades atendidas, la operación del buscarril está subsidiada por el Ministerio de Trans-portes y Telecomunicaciones en el marco del Programa de Apoyo al Transporte Regional de la Ley 20.378.

El Ramal Talca - Constitución durante mucho tiempo concentró gran cantidad de tráfico de pasajeros y carga entre todas sus localidades. En las décadas de 1970 y 1980, cuando el transporte ferroviario había declinado en gran parte del país, el ra-mal mantenía un elevado movimiento de carga, gracias a la planta de celulosa Celco en Constitución.

The Ramal Talca-Constitución long concentrated a big passenger and cargo traffic between all loca-

tions. In the 1970s and 1980s, when rail transport had declined in much of the country, the branchli-

ne held a high cargo movement, thanks to the Celco cellulose plant in Constitución.

Hasta ese momento, el tráfico de pasajeros por el ramal había sido atendido prin-cipalmente por trenes remolcados, esto es, trenes compuestos por varios coches que eran tirados por una locomotora. El deterioro de la infraestructura y el cierre de la vía de acceso a la planta de celulosa hicieron que estos trenes fueran finalmente reemplazados por otros más livianos como los automotores y los buscarriles.

Until then, passenger traffic through the branchline had been attended mainly by towed trains, i.e.

trains composed of several cars that were pulled by a locomotive. Deteriorating infrastructure and

the closing of the cellulose plant´s access road, finally made these trains to be replaced by lighter

ones such as railcars and bustrains.

El año 2007, el Ramal Talca Constitución con su línea ferroviaria, su infraestructura y equipo rodante fue declarado Monumento Histórico por el Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales, y el año 2010 los chilenos lo eligieron uno de los 15 clásicos nacionales.

Council, and in 2010 Chileans elected it as one of 15 national classics.

La trocha o ancho de una vía férrea es la distancia entre las caras internas de los rieles. La trocha más frecuente en el mundo es 1.435 mm, y se denomina trocha normal. Las trochas superiores a 1.435 mm se denominan trochas anchas, y aquellas inferiores a esa medida son trochas angostas.

La red principal de Ferrocarriles del Estado usa una trocha ancha de 1.676 mm. En cambio, el ramal Talca - Constitución fue cons-truido con una trocha de 1.000 mm (una trocha angosta), a fin de reducir el costo de construcción por la accidentada zona que existe entre las diferentes localidades que atiende.

The gauge or width of a railway is the distance between the inner faces of the rails. The world´s most common gauge is 1,435 mm, and is called the standard gauge. The gauges above 1,435 mm are called wide gauges, and the ones below that measure are narrow gauges.

The backbone of the State Railways uses a broad 1,676 mm gauge. Instead, the Ramal Talca - Constitución was built with a 1,000 mm gauge (narrow gauge), to reduce building costs due to rugged areas between different localities which attends.

Estaciones, puentes y túneles del RamalStations, bridges and tunnels of the Ramal

Comenzamos nuestro viaje en la Estación de Talca (Km. 0), construida el año 1929 con un marcado estilo art decó y un cobertor característico de la arquitectura industrial. La estación contaba con un amplio patio de rieles con trochas de 1 y 1.6 metros, además de zonas bitrochadas, maestranza, casa de máquinas y tornamesa.

We start our journey at Talca Railway Station (km 0), built in 1929 with a strong art deco influence and featuring an

industrial architecture shell. The station had a large rail yard with 1 and 1,6 meter gauges, plus re-gauged areas, metal

workshop, roundhouse and turntable.

En el trayecto entre Talca y Colín, observaremos un paisaje propio de una ciudad en crecimiento, y a medida que nos alejamos, el entorno se irá transformando en un típico paisaje agrícola. Una vez que se deja atrás Colín, los paisajes cambian; los viñedos nos acompañarán hasta más allá de Curtiduría.

Hacia el Km. 12,6 llegaremos a la estación de Colín que debe su nombre a un ave similar a la perdiz. En el pasado, también se conocía a esta zona como tierra de burros debido a la gran cantidad de estos animales que deambulaban por el sector.

La estación de Colín, construida entre 1890 y 1892, está fuertemente influida por la arquitectura co-lonial. En sus vías, por el extremo oriente, se puede observar una palanca de accionamiento de un cambio de agujas de fabricación antigua, con la inscripción “BALFOUR, LYON Y Cª, VALPARAÍSO” sobre su contrapeso y su soporte, ambos de hierro forjado.

Colín, al igual que las principales estaciones del ramal, era una villa- mercado, con comercio, servicios básicos y bodegas de acopio para productos agrícolas, lo que atraía a campesinos y trabajadores.

Within the Talca to Colín stretch, you´ll see a proper growing city landscape, and as we move away the setting will turn

into a typical agricultural landscape. Leaving Colín, landscapes change, vineyards will accompany us beyond Curtiduría.

Towards km 12,6 we´ll reach Colín station, named after a bird similar to the partridge. In the past, this area was also

known as the donkey land due to the large number of these animals that roamed the area.

Colín station, built between 1890 and 1892, is strongly influenced by colonial architecture. In its rails, through the Eas-

tend, you can see an ancient built activation lever of a needle exchange, with the inscription “BALFOUR, LYON AND C ª,

VALPARAÍSO” on its counter weight and support, both in casted iron.

As well as the main stations of the branchline, Colín was a market-town, with trading, basic services and storing ware-

houses for agricultural products, which attracted workers and peasants.



En el kilómetro 17,3, llegaremos al Puente Rauquén que cruza las aguas del Río Claro. Construido en los inicios del Ramal, esta obra de ingeniería tiene un largo aproximado de 375 metros, un ancho de 4,18 metros y una altura de 9,6 metros.

At km 17,3, we´ll reach Rauquén Bridge which crosses Rio Claro waters. Built in the beginnings of the Ramal, this enginee-

ring building has an approximate length of 375 meters, a width of 4,18 meters and a height of 9,6 meters.

En el Km. 26,7 encontraremos la Estación de Corinto, construida en madera entre los años 1890 y 1892. En esta estación es posible visualizar el fin del Río Claro y su unión con el Río Maule

Antiguamente, Corinto era conocido como Pocoa o lugar de sapos en mapudungun. Su actual nombre proviene del molino levantado por un ciudadano griego cuya ciudad natal era Corinto. Le recomen-damos recorrer la localidad de casonas de adobe y calles tranquilas. Visite el santuario dedicado a la Virgen de la Purísima, que cada ocho de diciembre recibe a miles de fieles. At km 26,7 we´ll find Corinto Station, built in wood between 1890 and 1892. In this station it´s possible to see the end of

the Claro River and its junction with the Maule River.

In the past, Corinto was formerly known as Pocoa or place of toads in Mapudungun. Its current name comes from the

mill erected by a Greek citizen whose hometown was Corinth. We recommend touring the village of adobe houses and

quiet streets. Visit the shrine to the Virgin of the Immaculate, which every December 8th receives thousands of devotees.

En el kilómetro 27,6, cruzaremos el Puente Estero Los Puercos, construido el año 1895 con acero y hormigón. Tiene un largo de 57,45 metros, un ancho de cinco metros y una altura total de 11 metros. Este puente cruza el estero con el mismo nombre, uno de los más importantes afluentes de esta zona. At km 27,6, we´ll cross the Estero Los Puercos bridge, built in 1895 on steel and concrete. It has a 57.45 meter length,

a five meter width and a total height of 11 meters. This bridge crosses the creek with the same name, one of the most

important streams of this region.

E n el kilómetro 33,5 encontraremos la Estación de Curtiduría, que recibe este nombre por antiguas faenas de curtiembres. Por muchos años fue una de las estaciones más importantes del Ramal y se convirtió en centro económico y social para los pueblos más alejados de la vía férrea. Hoy se conoce por sus viñedos de uva rosada y cepa país.

La estación, construida entre los años 1890-1892, tiene el estilo de las antiguas viviendas rurales, con muros gruesos de adobe y corredor semi-exterior, y presencia de maderas nativas en puertas y ventanas.



Hacia el norte de la estación, verá dos vías laterales en desuso y en el extremo poniente, una palanca de accionamiento de un cambio de agujas de fabricación antigua, con la inscripción “HARDY & CÍA, VALPARAÍSO” sobre su contrapeso, construida en hierro forjado.

Si tiene tiempo para recorrer la localidad, visite la Biblioteca Pública (ex escuela) y las antiguas bode-gas de vino en sus calles principales.

Una vez retomado nuestro viaje en buscarril hacia González Bastías, aparece el Río Maule en todo su esplendor, y nos acompaña durante todo nuestro trayecto hasta Constitución.

At kilometer 33,4 we´ll find Curtiduría Station, named after old tannery tasks. For many years this station was one of the

most important of the Ramal, and became an economic and social center for the furthest located people of the railway.

Today it is known for its pink grape vineyards and “país” stock.

The station, built between 1890 and1892, has an ancient rural housing style, with thick adobe walls and semi-outdoor

corridor, and the presence of native wood in doors and windows.

To the north of the station, you will see two disused side tracks in the west end, an ancient built activation lever of a

needle exchange, with the inscription “HARDY & CÍA, VALPARAíSO” on its counter weight, built in casted iron.

If you have time to explore the town, visit the Public Library (former school) and the ancient wine cellars in the main

streets.

Resuming our bustrain journey towards González Bastías, Maule River appears in all its splendor, accompanying us

throughout our journey to Constitución.

En el kilómetro 43,5 llegaremos a la Estación González Bastías, antiguamente llamada Infiernillo; algunos dicen que el nombre se debía a la peligrosidad de sus aguas torrentosas y otros al calor que se sentía en el verano. Tras la muerte de González Bastías, la estación fue rebautizada en homenaje al poeta, que nunca escribió un verso sobre el ramal.

Es la única estación intermedia que opera como tal. En sus vías se encuentran los dos buscarriles que se detienen por 10- 15 minutos, tiempo en que las “venteras” ofrecen las famosas tortillas de Gonzá-lez Bastías, pan amasado, huevos duros y humitas.

La Estación, construida entre 1892 y 1897, es de adobe y madera. En la oficina del Jefe de estación se encuentran aún los aparatos del antiguo sistema de control de tráfico. También hay una bodega, y en el andén cubierto, una antigua balanza para pesar cargas embarcadas.

La estación cuenta con dos vías laterales, una a cada lado de la principal. Aquella ubicada al lado norte no está operativa y es usada como sitio de estacionamiento de carros viejos. Junto al edificio de la estación, existen aún dos estanques elevados de agua de construcción metálica. El aparato de llenado para las locomotoras (llamado caballo de agua) fue removido.

No olvide visitar la tornamesa de tipo manual, también operativa, que conserva la inscripción original de fabricación (de 1891), a nombre de otro fabricante tradicional de locomotoras de vapor: LEVER, MURPHY Y CÍA, CALETA ABARCA.



Siguiendo nuestro viaje, en el kilómetro 47,5 llegaremos a la Estación de Toconey, antiguamente lla-mada Tanguao. Los viajeros se confundían creyendo que aquí se encontraban los baños termales del mismo nombre y por eso se rebautizó con el nombre de Toconey.

Continuing our journey, at kilometer 47,5 we´ll reach Toconey Station, formerly called Tanguao. Travelers would get

confused thinking that here were the hot springs of the same name and therefore renamed to Toconey.

Si se queda en González Bastías, visite su plaza, la Casona del Poeta, su tranquila playa de río y la Viña González Bastías. Encontrará restaurantes de comida típica chilena.

En el tramo entre González Bastías y Constitución, el paisaje cambia, con un fuerte dominio de plan-taciones forestales, pero en los sectores que se forman a orillas del río Maule, es posible distinguir álamos y sauces. A partir de esta estación, la vía férrea correrá paralela al Río Maule. Prepare su cámara fotográfica para sacar las mejores tomas del río. At km 43,5 we´ll reach González Bastías Station, formerly called Infiernillo; some say that the name was due to its dan-

gerous rushing waters, and others say due to the heat felt in summer. After the death of González Bastías, the station

was renamed in honor of the poet who never wrote a verse on the branchline.

It is the only intermediate station operating as such. On its railways are the two bustrains which stop for 10 to 15 mi-

nutes, while the “venteras” offer their famous Bastías González “tortillas”, homemade bread, boiled eggs and tamales.

Built between 1892 and 1897, is an adobe and wooden built station. In the station´s master office you can still find the

devices from the old system of traffic control. There is also a wine cellar, and on the undercover platform, an old scale

for weighing loaded freights.

The station has two side tracks, one on each side of the main. The one located on the north side is not operational and

is used as a parking site for old cars. Next to the station building, there are still two metallic elevated water tanks. The

filling apparatus for locomotives (called water horse) was removed.

Be sure to visit the manual type turntable, also operational, retaining the original manufacture registration (from 1891),

registered under another traditional steam locomotive manufacturer: LEVER, MURPHY and CO., CALETA ABARCA.

If you happen to stay at González Bastías visit the main square, the Casona del Poeta, the quiet river beach and Bastías

González Vineyard. You´ll find typical Chilean food restaurants.

In the stretch between González Bastías to Constitución, the landscape changes, with a strong domain of forest plan-

tations, but in sectors that form on the Maule River banks one can distinguish poplars and willows. From this station

onwards, the railway will run parallel to the Maule River. Prepare your camera to get the best shots of the river.



En el kilometro 52,8 veremos la Estación de Pichamán. Esta zona fue conocida por su actividad fo-restal y sus vinos provenientes del valle del mismo nombre. La estación, originalmente construida en madera, desapareció a causa de un incendio, y debió ser reemplazada por un antiguo carro de ferrocarril metálico.

At kilometer 52,8 we´ll get to see Pichamán Station. This area was known for its forestry and wines coming from the

valley of the same name. The station, originally built in wood, disappeared during a fire, and it had to be replaced by an

old metal rail car.

Avanzando algunos kilómetros, llegaremos a la Estación de Forel (Km 62,1) conocida originalmente como El Álamo. La estación debe su nombre a Francisco Forel, biólogo, naturista y geógrafo suizo. Antiguamente era una zona conocida por la producción maderera y la elaboración de vinos artesana-les. El inmueble original, de madera, fue arrasado por el fuego y en la actualidad existen dos carros metálicos Socometal equipados como estación. Es bastante probable que estos coches hayan sido parte de los últimos trenes remolcados que circularon por el ramal.

A few kilometers ahead, we´ll reach Forel Station (Km 62,1) originally known as El Álamo. The station is named after

Francisco Forel, biologist, Swiss naturalist and geographer. It was formerly known as a timber production and handmade

winemaking area. The original building, made of wood, was destroyed by fire and today there are two Socometal metal

carts equipped as a station. It is quite likely that these cars have been part of the last towed trains circulating along the

branchline.

En el kilómetro 62,9, pasaremos por el Túnel Ferroviario El Álamo, construido el año 1896., tras desa-fiar un accidentado paisaje. El túnel, de albañilería y piedra, tiene un largo de 80 metros, un ancho de 4,7 metros y una altura total de 7,2 metros.

At kilometer 62,9, we´ll pass through the El Álamo Railway Tunnel, built in 1896, after defying a rugged landscape. The

tunnel, masonry and stone built, has a length of 80 meters, a width of 4,7 meters and a total height of 7,2 meters.

En el kilómetro 63, cruzaremos el Puente Ferroviario Quebrada Honda. Construido totalmente en acero el año 1895, tiene un largo de 90 metros y un ancho de 4,45 metros.

At kilometer 63, we´ll cross the Quebrada Honda railway bridge. Constructed entirely out of steel in 1895, it has a length of

90 meters and a width of 4,45 meters.


En el kilómetro 66, llegaremos a la Estación de Huinganes, cuyo nombre proviene del huingán, ar-busto de pequeñas flores blancas y frutos negruzcos que se utiliza para preparar alcohol, miel, y para la curación de hernias y fracturas. La estación, construida en 1939, tiene una estructura de madera similar a una vivienda del sur del país, que rompe con el modelo de construcciones rurales propias del campo central de Chile.

At kilometer 66, we´ll arrive at Huinganes Station, name that comes from the “huingán”, a bush of small white flowers

and blackish fruits used for making alcohol, honey, and for the healing of hernias and fractures. The station, built in

1939, has a wooden structure similar to a house in the south of Chile, which breaks the pattern of rural construction,

typical from the central countryside.

La penúltima estación del recorrido es Maquehua (Km. 74,2) de estilo colonial con patio interior y corredor exterior, que corresponde al andén de espera. En la zona en desuso de la vía lateral, existe un vagón antiguo con un tanque de agua soldado sobre su superficie. En la parte posterior de la estación se localiza un cerro aledaño que permite una vista panorámica hacia el río.

The penultimate station of the trip is Maquehua (Km 74,2) colonial styled with an indoor patio and exterior corridor,

which corresponds to the waiting platform. In the unused area of the side track, there is a wagon with old water tank

welded onto its surface. At the back of the station there is a nearby hill that allows a panoramic view of the river.

En el kilómetro 81,7, encontraremos el Paradero de Rancho Astillero. Debe su nombre a un antiguo astillero donde se fabricaban y reparaban embarcaciones que cruzaban el río a Constitución. En su playa puede comer las famosas lisas ahumadas a la teja, uno de los platos típicos del Ramal.

At kilometer 81,7, we´ll find the Rancho Astillero stop. It was named after a former shipyard where boats were manufac-

tured and repaired, and which used to cross the river to Constitución. You can eat on the beach the famous tile smoked

loaches, one of the typical dishes of the Ramal.

En el kilómetro 83,4 cruzaremos uno de los hitos más importantes del Ramal: el Puente Ferroviario de Banco de Arena. Este puente, diseñado por Gustave Eiffel, fue construido entre los años 1908-1915 por la empresa Schneider y Co., también encargada de construir el Viaducto de Malleco. Sola mente en 1915, con la inauguración del Puente Banco de Arena, los trenes cruzaron el Río Maule para llegar a Constitución.

At kilometer 83,4 we´ll cross one of the most important milestones of the Ramal: Banco de Arena Railway Bridge. This

bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel, was built between 1908 and 1915 by Schneider and Co., also in charge of building

the Malleco Viaduct. Only in 1915, with the inauguration of the Banco de Arena Bridge, trains crossed the Maule River

to get to Constitución.

Los buscarriles o ferrobuses fueron una solución a los altos costos que implicaba mover un tren de pasajeros y en donde los volúmenes de pasajeros no ameritaba mover una locomotora con un sólo coche de pasajeros. Además, tienen una conducción

y servicio sencillo, frenado y aceleración más rápida con una gran adaptabilidad a las pendientes y curvas, en comparación a los tre-nes a vapor.

The bustrains, or railbuses, were a solution to the high costs involved in moving a

passenger train and where n° of passengers was no excuse to move a locomotive

with one passenger car only. They also have a simple maintenance and are easy to

drive, having a quicker braking and acceleration with a great adaptability to slopes

and curves, compared to steam trains.

Finalizando el recorrido en buscarril, llegamos a Constitución (Km 88,4). La estación fue construida en 1940 con una arquitectura moderna, típica de principios del siglo XX. Aproximadamente a 300 metros al oriente de la estación se encuentra la tornamesa que sigue funcionando, ya que es el lugar donde se invierte el coche motor del buscarril para preparar su viaje de regreso, y tiene el único cambio de agujas operativo de la estación.

Completing the trip by bustrain, we reach Constitución (Km 88,4). The station was built in 1940 with a modern architec-

ture, typical of the early twentieth century. Approximately 300 meters east of the station is the turntable that still works,

since it´s where the engine wagon is reversed to prepare your return trip, and is the only operating needle exchange of

the station.

Por su parte, el Ramal Talca Constitución también ha inspirado a conocidos artistas, cuyas obras recogen lo más profundo de la vida rural chilena.

Maule lands have seen the birth of a Nobel Prize and several National Awards of literature; authors like Max Jara, Jerónimo Lagos and incommensurable

figures in modern universal poetry, as Pablo Neruda and Pablo Rokha have consolidated the poetic tradition of the region. Meanwhile, the Ramal Talca-Cons-

titución has also inspired famous artists whose works reflect the depths of Chilean rural life.

Conocido por sus versos inundados de nostalgia y melancolía que hablan de la vida en el campo, la pobreza de los humildes y el dolor de la vida, nació el 21 de mayo de 1879 en la aldea Nirivilo, región del Maule. En su casa en Infernillo, recibió a viajeros y autoridades de la época, y la transformó en un importante centro social y cultural. Fue regidor y alcalde de Nirivilo durante varios años, donde se dedicó a mejorar caminos, abrir escuelas y a luchar contra la pobreza. Falleció el 22 de noviembre de 1950. Ocho años más tarde, la estación de Infiernillo recibió el nombre del Poeta González Bastías.

Known for his verses flooded with nostalgia and melancholy that talk about life in the countryside, the poverty of the humble and the pain of life, he was born

on May 21st, 1879 in the Nirivilo village, Maule Region. At home in Infiernillo, he received passengers and authorities of the time, and he turned it into an im-

portant social and cultural center. He was alderman and mayor of Nirivilo for several years, where he focused on improving roads, opening schools and fighting

poverty. He died on November 22nd, 1950. Eight years later, the Infiernillo station was named after poet González Bastías.

Desde el año 2007 la Corporación Cultural de Corinto apoya el desarrollo de las artes, ofreciendo a los artistas, realizadores e in-teresados, un espacio para actuar y disponer de gestión y servicios. Cada abril la Corporación organiza La Estación de las Artes, un verdadero viaje cultural que invita a la comunidad a participar de actividades, talleres y charlas de danza, música, cine y teatro. También organiza actividades de rescate de patrimonio a través de cuentos y leyendas del Ramal y residencias para artistas que quieran crear e inspirarse en estas tierras.

Since 2007, the Cultural Corporation of Corinto supports the development of the arts, offering artists, filmmakers and those interested a venue to perform and make use of management and services. Each April the Corporation organizes the La Estación de las Artes (Arts Station), a true cultural journey that invites the community to interact in activities, workshops and lectures in dance, music, film and theater. It also organizes heritage rescue activities through stories and legends of the Ramal and residences for artists willing to create and be inspired on these lands.

He lived in the area of Las Tizas on the road linking Pencahue and Corinto. He was a songwriter, folklorist and anthropologist, and formed the Quelentaro and

the Dúo Coirón bands, of which there are audiovisual recordings.

Doña Edilia Díaz y sus hijas Andrea y Erica Llanca han trabajado el oficio de tejedoras por más de 15 años. En su taller realizan la tra-ma, tejido y teñido de la lana, lograda a través de tinturas vegetales extraídas de especies de la zona; el maitén, mora, nogal y quintral, imprimen llamativos colores a sus creaciones.

Ma’am Edilia Díaz and her daughters Andrea and Erica Llanca have worked as weavers for over 15 years. In

their workshop they make the weave, the fabric, and wool dyeing, achieved through vegetable dyes extrac-

ted from local species; the “maitén”, mulberry, walnut and “quintral” print brightly colors to their creations.

Fueron ellos quienes introdujeron la cepa país, similar a la uva misión de California, y de gran presencia en la región sobre todo en zonas de rulo con escasez de agua y en secanos interiores y costeros. Con ella se elaboran vinos tintos simples y tradicio-nales, que han hecho famosas a localidades como Colín, Curtiduría, González Bastías y Pichamán.

It was them who introduced the “país” wine stock, similar to the mission grapes of California, and of

strong presence in the region, especially in curl areas with water shortages, and inland and coastal

dry lands. With it, simple and traditional red wines are processed, and have made some locations

famous like Colín, Curtiduría, González Bastías and Pichamán.

In the five thousand bottle annual production, stands out the “país” grape stock wine (2010), “País of Rulo” (2011), “Tinaja” (2011), Black Muscat – “País” (2011

and 2009), but the most striking is undoubtedly the Smoked “País”, whose flavor hides an amazing story.

On December 25th, 2008 a great fire devastated over a thousand acres in the Pichamán Valley, but fate would have the vineyard to be saved from the flames.

However, smoke covered it for several days, just when the grapes were growing. Once cut, the grapes were fermented in an artisanal way and as in the last 200

years they were transferred to oak barrels, but the result was revealing: the smoke taste had passed through the skin and into the wine, merging tastes into an

exquisite amalgam. Only 300 bottles were produced, which have become an icon of this vineyard and has been awarded the Bicentennial Award for rescuing

the tradition of the “país” grape and preserving the local identity.

En la producción anual de cinco mil botellas destaca el vino País (2010), País de Rulo (2011), Tinaja (2011), Moscatel Negra - País (2011 y 2009), pero el más llamativo es sin duda el Ahumado País, cuyo sabor esconde una sorprendente historia.

El 25 de diciembre de 2008 un gran incendio arrasó con más de mil hectáreas en el Valle de Pichamán, pero la fortuna quiso que la viña se salvara de las llamas. Sin embargo el humo la envolvió por varios días, justo cuando las uvas estaban en pleno crecimiento. Una vez cortadas las uvas fermentaron de manera artesanal y tal como en los últimos 200 años pasaron a barricas de roble, pero el resultado fue revelador: el sabor del humo había pasado por la piel, se había integrado al vino y los sabores se fundieron en una amalgama exquisita. Sólo 300 botellas fueron elaboradas, las cuales se han convertido en un icono de esta viña y merecedoras del premio Bicentenario por rescatar la tradi-ción de la uva país y conservar la identidad local.

El Valle del Maule es ideal para realizar cabalgatas entre remanentes de bosques nativos que cruzan pequeñas quebradas. Existen tours de uno a cuatro días que reco-rren los sectores desde Colín a Toconey y Las Dunas de Putú en la costa.

La primera parte del recorrido está dominada por un paisaje típico del campo chi-leno; partiendo desde Talca se divisan paisajes agrícolas de hortalizas y en el tramo Colín – Corinto el territorio comienza a caracterizarse por sus grandes viñedos. Luego, camino a Maquehua y hasta Constitución, destacan plantaciones forestales de pino, pero cercanos al Río Maule crecen álamos y sauces, típicos árboles del Chile rural.

The first part of the route is dominated by a typical landscape of the Chilean countryside, starting

from Talca you can see agricultural vegetable landscapes, and in the stretch Colín – Corinto the

territory begins to be characterized by large vineyards. Then on the way to Maquehua through

Constitución, pine forest plantations stand out, but near the Maule River poplars and willow trees,

typical of rural Chile, tend to grow.
