Evolucionar
Una de las consignas que nos rige es tratar siempre
de mejorar y crecer. Muchas veces no es fácil porque
se presentan imprevistos en el camino que pueden
desalentar y modificar los proyectos. Pero no es este
nuestro caso.
En la próxima edición de TDG Caribe vamos a
incorporar la “Guía de Campos de Golf de República
Dominicana”. Con esta sección pretendemos
generarle valor a nuestra publicación y lograr que se
trasforme en una herramienta de consulta de todas
las personas que circulen por el país con el objetivo
de jugar al golf.
Ya estamos trabajando para evolucionar y seguir
creciendo. Apostamos al golf en República
Dominicana y creemos que podemos aportar muchas
cosas buenas desde nuestro espacio editorial.

Making progress
One of the goals we are ruled by is to keep on
improving and growing. Sometimes it is not that
easy since unexpected events may arise causing the
projects to be discouraged and modified, but that
is not our case.
In the next edition of TDG Caribe a ¨Dominican
Republic Golf Courses Guide¨ will be included. The
aim of this section is to generate product value and
making the magazine to become a reference guide
for all the people getting around the country to
play golf.
We are already working to make progress and
keep on growing. We are committed to golf in the
Dominican Republic and we also believe we can make
a great contribution from our editorial space.

- ¿Como ven el golf en República Dominicana?Moises: esto lo compartimos juntos, vemos el golf en Republica Dominicana como una de las indus-tras de mayor crecimiento. Nuestro país se perfila como el destino de golf mas importante en el Ca-ribe.Eileen: Compartimos el mismo criterio, el golf en nuestro país ha tenido un crecimiento conside-rable en los últimos años, es una industria que no hay manera de detener, pues día a día, vemos como nuevos golfistas se van sumando, y también lo veo como algo muy bueno dentro de nuestro país, pues vemos como nuestras temporadas altas, se van agregando nuevos turistas con un mayor perfil que buscan jugar en los hermosos campos que ofrece nuestro Pais. Ser parte de este creci-miento es como ver un niño crecer dia a dia.

Golf has grown substantially over the last few years; it is a non-stop industry since it is noticeable how new golfers choose our country day by day. It also means a lot for the country since new high-profile tourists seek to play in the beau-tiful golf courses of our country; being part of this growth it is like seeing a child growing up day by day.
- Which are the funniest aspects of working in the same field?Moisés: As we love this sport, working in the same field it is not only a blessing but also so-mething really funny to work in two different courses of the same field. Eileen: As we often tease each other about our

- ¿Qué es lo más divertido de trabajar en el mismo rubro?Moises: Trabajar en la misma area, aparte de ser una bendición, nosotros amamos este deporte, por lo que siempre será divertido contar con dos trabajos en la misma area y en diferentes campos.Eileen: La competencia entre ambos, es super divertida, pues mu-chas veces ambos “nos echamos vainas” como decimos en nuestro país, con los respectivos campos. Nuestros amigos a veces cuando juegan en un campo, se sienten que nos traicionan y juegan un poco a escondidas. Nosotros, la verdad es que sabemos que traba-jar en esta industria, y en lo que nos gusta, es una bendición divina, pues, no trabajas, sino que haces lo que te gusta y ya nada puede ser pesado. Quieres mas diversión que esta?
- Y lo más aburrido?Moises: MIRAR EL CAMPO DIA A DIA Y NO PODER JUGAR GOLF!!!
respective golf courses, the competition between us is extre-mely funny. Playing golf in other courses make our friends feel they betray us so they try to play “in secret”. Working in this industry is a divine blessing since it is not just a job; it is doing what we like so it can never be tedious. Is it possible to have more fun than this?
- And what about the most boring aspects?Moisés: LOOKING AT THE GOLF COURSE DAY BY DAY AND NOT BEING ABLE TO PLAY GOLF!!! Eileen: It is like looking at a candy shop when suffering from diabetes!!
- Could you list the three golf courses in the country you like the most? Why? Moisés & Eileen: We consider that all the golf courses in the country are special; each has its charm such as the landscape, the design, or the surrounding nature which makes it difficult to choose just three. We think all TDG readers should try to play in all the golf courses of the country to make their own

- Nos pueden enumerar los 3 campos de golf que más le gustan del pais y porque?Moises y Eileen: Creemos que todos los campos de nuestro país son especiales, cada uno tiene su encanto, unos el pai-saje, otros el diseño, otros la naturaleza que los circunda, por lo que nos seria imposible reducirlo a solo 3. Creemos que todos los lectores de TDG deberían intentar jugar todos los campos de nuestro país, y que ellos hagan su propio juicio.Aunque…. (entre nos) Cana Bay y Catalonia, tienen su pre-ferencia!
- Cómo imaginan ustedes la evolución de golf en los próximos 10 años?República Dominicana se consolidara como el líder en golf en el Caribe.Sera como soñamos todos los involucrados en el de-porte y la industria: un destino de golf inigualable!
- Cuál es el desafío mas grande a la hora de adminis-trar un campo de golf?Moises: la visión a largo plazo de tener el equilibrio entre presupuesto y rentabilidad.Eileen: Coincidiendo con Moisés, mantener el equili-brio con la rentabilidad versus mantenimiento.
- Juegan al golf juntos? lo hacen seguido?Ambos: No solo jugamos, sino que no vemos otra ma-nera mejor de compartir. Ambos ADORAMOS ESTE DEPORTE, y cuando descansamos, jugamos golf cada vez que el clima lo permite. Es la mejor forma de pasar el tiempo juntos, ya que es limitado por nuestras labo-res. Generalmente, jugamos los días que descansamos con nuestros amigos, en los otros campos de golf ve-cinos, para no sentirnos trabajando, solo disfrutando de nuestra compañía, del buen golf y de nuestra vida social, en un campo de golf todo esto se combina. Am-bos disfrutamos mucho de jugar juntos, pues sentimos que estamos en nuestro elemento y en el lugar donde ambos pertenecemos.

- How do you picture golf development in the next 10 years?The Dominican Republic will be established as the Ca-ribbean golf leader; it will become a dream come true for those involved in the sport as well as the industry: the best golf destination! - Which is the most important challenge when managing a golf course?Moisés: The looking-forward approach of getting a balan-ce between the budget and the profitability. Eileen: I agree with Moisés, keeping the balance between
profitability and maintenance.
- Do you play golf together? If so, how often?Both: We not only play golf together, we also consider it as the best way to share. We both LOVE THIS SPORT, and whenever the climate is favorable we play golf on our days off; it is the best way to spend time together since we are restricted to our jobs. We usually play golf with some friends on our days off but we choose nearby golf courses to feel that we are not working, just to enjoy each other’s company, good golf as well as our social life since everything can be mixed in a golf course. We both enjoy playing together since we feel we are in our ele-ment as well as in the place we both belong to.
We both LOVE THIS SPORT, and whenever the climate is favorable we play golf on our days off; it is the best way to spend time together

Golf courses guidede golfGuía de campos
E n la próxima edición de TDG Caribe, incorporaremos
una sección editorial donde encontrarán el detalle
de todos los campos de golf del país.
Nuestro objetivo es darle una utilidad a la revista para que
sea un material de consulta de los turistas que circulan
por República Dominicana. De esta manera ayudaremos
a la promoción del golf y el turismo en todas las canchas
de golf.
La sección contará con el detalle y las características
técnicas principales de cada campo y también
dedicaremos un espacio para los lugares de interés
turísticos .
Incrementaremos nuestra tirada para llegar con más
revistas a los hoteles y sectores específicos donde
los turistas y golfistas del país puedan acceder a
esta propuesta editorial.
Seguimos creciendo, buscando afianzarnos en
el Caribe como una revista de golf distinta y de
gran utilidad y lectura.
Con la nueva sección los lectores de
TDG contarán con una completa guía
donde encontrarán todos los detalles
importantes sobre los campos de golf
del país y otros datos de relevancia.

an editorial section will be included
where a list of all the golf courses in the country
will be displayed.
Our goal is to make the magazine a useful
reference guide for those tourists getting around
the Dominican Republic; this way we will help
promoting golf as well as tourism in all golf
courses.
The section will offer details and main technical
features of each golf course while a space will be
set apart for interesting tourist destinations.
We will increase our print runs so that tourists
and golfers of the country can easily get this
magazine in hotels and specific places.
We keep on growing, trying to consolidate our
position in the Caribbean as a special, useful and
highly readable golf magazine.

De Vicenzo nació en Buenos Aires el 14 de abril de 1923
A los 8 años de edad se inició como caddie en un club de la zona y
en 1933 jugó su primer torneo de golf. Posteriormente ingresó en
el Ranelagh Golf Club de Berazategui, localidad en la que residió
desde entonces.
C onsiderado uno de los deportistas más destacados de su país a través de todos los tiempos, es quizás el arquetipo de los golfistas de los años 50, ya que ganó
la asombrosa cantidad de 230 torneos alrededor del mundo (de acuerdo al Salón de la Fama del Golf Mundial), incluidos 4 torneos del PGA Tour y el Abierto Británico. En este último torneo, en el cual se impuso ante grandes rivales, como Jack Nicklaus
Considered as one of the most distinguished sportsmen of his country, he is the archetypal golfer in the fifties since he won nothing but 230 golf
tournaments all over the world -according to the World Golf Hall of Fame- including four tournaments of the PGA Tour and the British Open; at the age of 44, this last tournament became him the best major player after beating big opponents like Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

De Vicenzo was born in Buenos Aires in April 14th 1923
At the age of eight he started as a caddie in a neighboring club
while in 1933 he played his first golf tournament. In later years, he
joined the Ranelagh Golf Club in Berazategui which was his place of
residence since then.

y Gary Player, se convirtió, con 44 años, en el ganador más grande de un major.De Vicenzo es muy recordado por un grave error que cometió en el Masters de 1968 y por su actitud cuando se evidenció. Al finalizar el torneo no revisó su tarjeta, llenada por su compañero de línea Tommy Aaron, quien le había anotado cuatro golpes en el hoyo 17, en lugar de los tres para birdie que había hecho. De Vicenzo firmó y presentó la tarjeta con ese golpe de más. Según las reglas del golf, si una tarjeta tiene más golpes que los realmente efectuados se acepta la puntuación declarada por el golfista (si tuviera menos el jugador sería descalificado). Por eso De Vicenzo, que en el campo había empatado el primer lugar, terminó segundo. Bob Goalby se adjudicó el Abierto. Cuando el argentino se enteró del error que había cometido, se limitó a expresar una simple frase que quedó para
De Vicenzo is best remembered for his misfortune in the 1968 Masters Golf Tournament and for his attitude when he became evident. After the final round, De Vicenzo did not check his card which was marked by his playing partner Tommy Aaron who gave him a par 4 on the 17th hole instead of the birdie 3 he had made; unaware of the mistake, De Vicenzo signed the incorrect scorecard without checking the error. The Rules of Golf say that if a player signs for a higher score than the one he actually produced, the recorded score stands (if the player had less score he would be disqualified). De Vicenzo who had tied for first place finished second position gifting the victory to Bob Goalby. When the Argentinian golfer realized about the mistake he had made just expressed the immortal quote, “What a stupid I am.” He never blamed neither Tommy Aaron, who had marked his scorecard nor the

Si se genera tensión y dolor, el cuerpo tiende a compensar, pero si se continúa con la práctica de golf, el jugador corre el riesgo de causar lesiones posteriores en los grupos de músculos ad-yacentes; esto puede dar lugar a ciclos de dolor crónico que interferirán en el disfrute del juego. Por lo tanto, para “ponerse en forma para jugar golf” y aliviar la rigidez, es necesario evitar jugar por un tiempo, o bien, lue-go de cada ronda de golf, una sesión de masajes, ayudará a liberar tensiones y dolores. Si el músculo recupera su elasti-cidad, flexibilidad y movilidad antes y/o después del juego,

María Luisa Jiminián, Lorenzo Caimari, Javier Núñez y Eduardo Campos son los que se integran a nuestra gran familiaLa próxima fecha, será realizada entre el 22 y 23 de octubre. Con respecto al mes de diciembre, la puntuación de las ubicaciones en cada categoría tendrán un valor doble, como así también se contará con la presencia de Jim MacLean impartiendo una charla a los juveniles.Este año se competirá para lograr el único lugar en la división 15-18 masculino, otro en la de 14 años masculino y dos en la de 11-13. A n ew year of competences started. This time the tour is dedicated to Bernardo Pichardo, one of the pioneers
who represented the country in one of the Caribbean Series, apart from being several times the president of Santo Domingo Country Club (SDCC).As encouraging news for this season and as a sign that everything goes on the right track, the new players who will take part in the Elite Tour competences were welcomed. María Luisa Jiminián, Lorenzo Caimari, Javier Núñez and Eduardo Campos are the ones who are recently part of our big family. The next edition will be performed in October 22nd and 23rd. Regarding December, the score for the positions in each category will have a double value while the event will be graced with the presence of Jim MacLean who will deliver a talk for the juniors. This year, the players will compete for only one place in the 15-18 age male category, another place in the 14 age male category while for two places in the 11-13 age male category. Regarding women, they will compete for the position in the 15-18 age category to participate in the U.S. Kids Golf Teen World Cup Championship which will take place on Pinehurst, North Carolina in July next year. - Sabemos que viene de una familia muy prestigiosa de diseñadores. ¿Hay una influencia marcada en usted de algún integrante de su familia?Tanto mis padres como mis abuelos amaban el golf y fueron quienes nos transmitieron a mí y a mi hermano Perry el amor y el respeto por este deporte, razón por la cual les estaremos eternamente agradecidos.
- ¿A quién admira ó respeta de la industria del golf? Por qué? Ben Hogan tuvo un gran resurgimiento luego de enfrentarse cara a cara con la muerte en un accidente automovilístico; su estudio y dedicación al juego lo han convertido en uno de los jugadores más respetados de todos los tiempos. - ¿Tiene un estilo definido de diseño ó en cada proyecto realiza nuevas propuestas? Trato de combinar las filosofías de Donald Ross (Pinehurst No. 2), HS Colt (Pine Valley) y Seth Reynar (Fishers Island) con el objetivo de diseñar el mejor campo de golf del mundo. Me gusta que el jugador se detenga a pensar cómo jugar cada hoyo; incluso creo que al jugar los 18 hoyos, golfistas de cualquier hándicap deberían tener que usar todos los palos de su bolsa.
- ¿Cuál fue la consigna para rediseñar Barceló? Para Barceló fue muy importante mantener siempre 9 hoyos abiertos, y es la razón por la cual cada temporada rediseñamos y reconstruimos sólo esa cantidad de hoyos, en los cuales concentramos el 100% de nuestros esfuerzos, lo que hace que este campo de golf sea tan especial. - ¿Cuál fue el desafío más importante que presentó este rediseño?Una vez más, trabajar dentro del tiempo especificado y avanzar en el campo de golf con el objetivo de tenerlo listo para Navidad; este proyecto ha sido posible gracias a Dios y a la incesante colaboración de Barceló. ¿Qué priorizó a la hora de cambiar el campo? ¿Distancia ó estrategia? Las prioridades siempre tienen que ver con la construcción de un campo de golf que sea desafiante y, al mismo tiempo, entretenido a la hora de jugar. ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de República Dominicana?

do you have a well definied style on your designes or in every new proyect you make new proposals.?I try to combine the philosophies of Donald Ross-Pinehurst #2, HS Colt-Pine Valley, and Seth Reynar-Fishers Island in creating the best possible golf course on the land. I like to make the player think about how to play the hole. Also, every level of golfer should have to use every club in the bag while playing all 18 holes. which was the watchword for redesign barcelo? It was very important for Barcelo to maintain 9 holes open at all times. This is the reason we reconstructed and redesigned only 9 holes per season. This allowed us to concentrate 100% of our efforts on 9 holes at a time, which I believe has made the golf course so special. which was the most important challenge presented by this redesign Again, working within the given time, and growing in the golf course to have it ready for the Christmas season. We had complete cooperation from Barcelo and the man upstairs. what prioritized at the time of changing the golf course, distance or strategy ?

- ¿En qué sector del país usted cree que hace falta construir un campo de golf?Bueno, Pete Dye piensa que “los golfistas jugarían en el Monte Everest si alguien colocara una bandera en su cima”, y ¡lo mismo sucedería con el Pico Duarte y todas las elevaciones montañosas que le siguen en menor tamaño! Aunque, siempre es apasionante jugar en un campo de golf costero.
- ¿En qué otro lugar del mundo le gustaría diseñar un campo?En las dunas de la Isla del Sur ó Australia posiblemente. - Con tantos cambios y progresos en el golf, ¿cuál cree que será el desafío más grande para los campos del futuro?En el futuro, las cuestiones más importantes serán el costo de mantenimiento y la conservación del agua; junto a mi padre hemos advertido y difundido estos temas durante muchos años. Se trata de una batalla constante entre tratar de reducir las áreas de juego y prolongar el mismo por parte de los golfistas, ya que todos tratan de dar su golpe más largo.
- Cuando diseña, ¿piensa en los golfistas amateurs ó en los profesionales? Esto es referido al nivel de exigencia de los campos que realiza. Los mejores diseñadores tratan de construir campos de golf que sean tanto desafiantes como entretenidos para jugadores de todos los hándicaps. Los 60 jugadores que participan en un torneo de golf son como los 33 pilotos de la Indy 500; trato de construir y diseñar campos de golf para el común de la gente. La única forma de desafiar a los profesionales es con distancia, la cual debe rondar las 10.000 yardas. En realidad, siempre trato de adaptarme a la mayoría de los jugadores.

The country has so many good golf courses and had become a golf paradise for avid golfer. How not to like this country when you are a golfer! I was introduced to Mr. Pete Dye in the 80. I remember be invited to a Christmas dinner at his villa and listen to his great stories and being very shy in front of this golf legend. I remember walking the site of what was to be La Romana Country Club and was very impressed that he could see a golf course when I was seeing absolutely nothing except rocks and long grass. With the time I learn to know him better and was able to exchange some ideas on the golf swing. He was a good player and at 85 still is a good player.

What is the you like most from the Dominican Republic?The people. Todos son muy simpaticos. - what Sector of the country that you think it needs to do a golf course?Well, Pete Dye says that “golfers would play Mount Everest if you put a flag on top of it”, so with this, Pico Duarte and every place below it! But, it is always exciting to play a sea side golf course.
what part of the world would you like to design a golf course? In the sand dunes of Southern Island or possibly Australia. with so many changes and advances in golf, which you think will be the biggest challenge for the golf courses of the future..In the future, the biggest concerns are going to be the cost of maintenance and the conservation of water. Dad and I have been practicing and preaching this for man years. Trying to reduce the playing areas while the equipment people are lengthening the game is a constant battle. Everybody likes to hit it longer.
When designing, you think of the amateur golfers or professionals?, this is referred to the high standards of the golf courses you do. All good designers try to design a golf course that is both challenging and fun all levels of players. The 60+ players on tour are like the 33 drivers at the Indy 500. I try to build and design a golf course for the rest of us normal people. The only way to challenge the pros is with length, give or take about 10,000 yards. So in reality, I am always trying to accommodate the majority of players.
From all your golf courses designed, wich design you liked most once you finished? The first 9 holes at the Urbana Country Club in Urbana, Ohio were designed and built by my grandfather P.F. “Pink” Dye in 1922. I designed and built the second 9 holes at the Urbana Country Club in 1992. This combined 18 hole golf course has a special place in my heart.
From all the golf courses around the world, wich is the course you like most and why? La Cana golf is my first seaside golf course, right here in the Dominican Republic. It was a wonderful opportunity that the Rainieri’s gave me to create such a wonderful golf course. It is

- De todos los campos realizados, ¿qué diseño le gustó más una vez terminado el trabajo? En 1922, mi abuelo P.F. “Pink” Dye construyó y diseñó los primeros 9 hoyos del campo de Urbana Country Club en Urbana, Ohio, mientras que en 1992 yo llevé a cabo el diseño y la construcción de los 9 hoyos restantes, razón por la cual este campo de golf combinado de 18 hoyos ocupa un lugar especial en mi corazón.
- En el mundo, ¿cuál es el campo de golf que más le gusta y por qué?El campo de golf de La Cana Golf Club fue mi primera creación
costera y se encuentra aquí, en la República Dominicana; gracias a los Rainieri tuve la gran oportunidad de crear ese maravilloso campo de golf en el cual puedo jugar a diario. En Irlanda del Norte también hay un excelente campo de golf llamado Port Rush, con la diferencia de que el clima no es el mismo que en la República Dominicana.
- ¿Qué le gusta más, diseñar un campo ó jugarlo una vez terminado?Ningún jugador se ha divertido tanto jugando en uno de nuestros campos, como mi padre y yo lo hemos hecho al construirlos.

estuvo a cargo de Ortega Brugal.El evento contó con la dirección técnica del jugador profesional Julio Santos, quien ejerce por cuarta ocasión consecutiva las funciones. Para la versión de este año se inscribieron jugadores de diferentes clubes del país.

mejor score overall del “17mo. Torneo de Golf ASIEX 2011”. La pareja empató con Carlos Santelises y Ramón Estrella, ganádoles por desempate de tarjeta.100 jugadores estuvieron accionando en un evento en el que la naturaleza se portó a la altura, y, pese a los pronósticos de lluvia, el sol y el clima permitieron que los jugadores tuvieran un día fenomenal, caracterizado por la presencia masiva de los patrocinadores y los asociados a ASIEX.

1. Cómo empezaste a relacionarte con el golf dominicano?Mi relación empezó hace 13 años, cuando a petición del entonces presidente de FEDOGOLF, Don Marcos Troncoso, fui a trabajar como edecán de un equipo de Golf Channel que vino al país a grabar los Campeonatos del Caribe de 1998 que se celebraron en Teeth of the Dog. Fue mi primer contacto con el deporte. Me causó curiosidad, pero pasarían dos años más para que me iniciara de manera formal. Empecé a jugar por pura curiosidad, y honestamente me encontraba el golf hasta cierto punto aburrido, hasta que tuve un palo en las manos por primera vez de manos de mi cuñado (ido a destiempo), Nicolás Camasta. A los 3 meses de empezar a practicar, se me vino la idea de organizar un torneo y televisarlo, lo cual hice con el 1er. Torneo de Golf Los Amigos en el Metro Country Club en 1999, junto a Augusto Reynoso. Fue una gran experiencia saberme el primero en llevar las imágenes de juego a la televisión y los golfistas apreciaron mucho eso.
2. Fiebre de golf nace con que inquietud y que es Fiebre de Golf para ti?El nombre vino de unos viajes que hacemos que se denominan así. La gente se identificó rápidamente con el nombre y cuando se dio la oportunidad, bautice así los medios nuestros. Mi mentor en la televisión lo fue Carlos Azar, que fue la primera persona que confió en que podía hacer este trabajo de televisión. La Federación tenía en el aire el programa Golf TV que producía mi hermano Toñito Ramírez, y en el 2004, fue relanzado con nueva producción, nuevo nombre (Golf Dominicano), y una nueva cara: la mía, ja, ja, ja…así empezó todo y bajo el mando de Toñito Ramírez (mi maestro), fui aprendiendo estos menesteres. Luego él y yo adquirimos el programa, hasta que finalmente me quede yo solo, y Toñito se enfocó más en su proyecto de televisión, Sporturismo.

1. How did you start to be connected with the Dominican golf?At the age of 13, the president at the time of FEDOGOLF, Don Marcos Troncoso, asked me to work as a helper of a Golf Channel team which came to the country to record the 1998 Caribbean Golf Championships celebrated in Teeth of the Dog; that was my first exposure to the sport, I was curious but two years went by to start playing formally. I started playing out of sheer curiosity and I honestly thought golf as something boring to some extent until the first time I had a club in my hands from my brother-in-law Nicolás Camasta. After practicing during three months, I thought about organizing a tournament and televising it which I did with the first Los Amigos Golf Tournament in the Metro Country Club in 1999 together with Augusto Reynoso. Being the first person in taking the golf images to the TV was a great experience to me while the golfers appreciated it so much.
2. Fiebre de golf came into being as part of inquietude. What does Fiebre de Golf mean for you? The name is connected with some trips we go on which take that name. People quickly identified themselves with the name, and when the opportunity arose I gave that name to our media. Carlos Azar was my TV mentor and the person who trusted me to do this television job. The Federation televised a program called Golf TV produced by my brother Toñito Ramírez while in 2004 it was relaunched with a new production, a new name (Golf Dominicano) and a new face: mine! ha, ha, ha… here is how it all started, and under the command of Toñito Ramírez (my master) I learned this job step by step. 3. Aparte de tu fiebre con el golf sabemos que tienes otra fiebre, cuéntanos sobre ello? (las motos)Bueno…las motos son para mí el anti stress. Como sabes, lo del golf empezó como un hobbie, pero luego se convirtió en un trabajo “full time”. Veo los fairways como lugares de trabajo a los que tengo que dedicar tiempo, esfuerzo y entereza, pues son mi “estudio de televisión”. Así que cuando puedo, saco mi moto y me desconecto. De hecho
lo tengo personalizado con motivos de golf, y se llama “19th. Hole”, porque es el lugar en donde me recreo. Es un Honda VTX 1,800 CC, año 2002 con 95 CV.4. Volviendo al tema del golf que piensas del desarrollo que está teniendo en el país y que le falta para empujarlo aun mas?A veces le temo al desarrollo hasta cierto punto desorganizado que esta teniendo nuestra disciplina. Hace apenas unos días 4 torneos en un solo día…a veces hay 5….y lo cierto es que eso a la larga no será bueno. Si seguimos así, las consecuencias podrían ser funestas, porque los patrocinios podrían huir del golf y no continuar respaldando nuestro deporte. Hay que buscar la manera

3. Apart from your golf fever we know you have another fever (motorbikes), could you tell us something about this?Well… motorbikes for me are the anti-stress. As you know, the golf-related activities started as a hobby but then it turned into a “full time” job. I see the fairways as the workplaces I have to devote time, effort and determination since they are my “television studio”. So whenever I have
the time, I take my motorbike to switch myself off. In fact, my motorbike is personalized with golf motifs and is called “19th. Hole” since it is the place where I enjoy myself. It is a Honda VTX 1,800 CC, year 2002 with 95 CV. 4. Going back to the golf matter, what do you think about golf development in the country? And ¿what should be done to encourage it even further?Sometimes I fear the disorganized development to a certain extent our discipline is gaining. Only some days ago, there were 4 tournaments a day… sometimes there are 5… and the truth is that in the long run this will not be favorable. If we continue like this, we will have unfortunate consequences since the sponsors could run away and be reluctant to support our sport discipline; we have to find

Por otro lado, considero que lo que nos falta es que el estado acabe de entender que el golf no es solo un deporte…es una forma de vida para más de tres mil hogares que se benefician directamente del turismo de golf que viene al país. El gobierno debe invertir más en promoción internacional para que la República Dominicana deje de ser vista solo como un país de playa y arena, y que le gente lo perciba como una meca del golf. Tenemos los campos, buenos diseños, el clima tremendo, la gente amable que caracteriza la dominicanidad, así que solo falta que se cambie la forma en cómo el país es promocionado a nivel internacional.
5. Qué piensas de la falta de torneos de la PGA dentro de la República Dominicana?Esta pregunta es un complemento de la anterior. Tuvimos nuestro chance con los tres Cap Cana Championship (98, 99 y 2010), y lamentablemente no lo supimos aprovechar. Se calcula que más de 80 millones de televidentes (de
acuerdo a Golf Channel) en todo el mundo, vio la final en la que gano Fred Couples. Como ves, la visión es muy difusa para quienes tienen la responsabilidad de lograr que el país sea reconocido como un importante destino internacional de golf. Se están haciendo aprestos para traer un evento del LPGA, y creo que poco a poco iremos aprendiendo y valorando cada entrega de un torneo grande. Algún día llegará…!
6. Cómo te recibe ESPN Radio…? es un medio importantísimo, y en que emisora podemos escucharte? Y en internet?Las gestiones vinieron de la mano de Don Juan José López, propietario de la franquicia en el país, cosa que agradezco muchísimo, pues confió en lo que hacemos. ESPN Dominicana se escucha a través de 104.5 FM y 690 AM. Poco a poco la emisora irá creciendo en difusión hasta llegar a todos los rincones del país, pero mientras tanto puedes entrar a nuestra web, www.fiebredegolf.com y hacer click en el banner, o entrar a www.rdmusica.com

On the other hand, I think the State should finally understand that golf is not just a sport… it is a way of life for more than three thousand homes which are directly benefited from the golf tourism coming into the country. The government should invest more in international promotion for the Dominican Republic to stop being considered just as a beach-and-sand country and for the people to try to perceive it as the mecca of golf. We have the golf courses, good designs, a perfect climate, nice people characterizing the “dominicanity” so the only thing left to do is to change the way the country is promoted at international level.
5. What do you think about the lack of PGA tournaments in the Dominican Republic?This question complements the previous one. The three
Cap Cana Championships (‘98, ‘99 and 2010) gave us an opportunity but unluckily we did not know how to take advantage of it. Around more than 80 million viewers watched the final in which Fred Couples obtained the victory. As you can see, the view is quite different from those who have the responsibility of making the country to be recognized as an important and international golf destination. Aparte de las muchas actividades a las que te dedicas, te hemos visto muchas veces de maestro de ceremonias de torneos destacados, cuéntanos sobre esto.Bueno, imagínate…son ya siete años haciendo televisión, y uno va aprendiendo. Mi relación con los campos, con las empresas, con los organizadores de torneos, etc..., me han abierto las puertas, y, cuando cotizamos la cobertura de un evento X, aprovechamos y ponemos allí lo de las MC…nos “paqueteamos”, ja, ja, ja…
8. Cuáles son tus deportes preferidos sacando obviamente el golf, te dedicas a alguno de ellos? Si. He jugado baloncesto toda la vida (a pesar de mi tamaño). Pertenezco a la Liga 4-40 de la cual fui fundador
en 1995 y que acciona en el Club Mauricio Báez. Juego en la posición 1. Además practico Tae-kwon-Do.
9. Dentro de República Dominicana hay grandes promesas del golf, particularmente para ti, un hombre y una mujer del golf?WOW…promesas….de las actuales, Willito y Juan Carlos Perelló que ya están jugando a nivel profesional. De las que van subiendo, Diego Schiffino y José Alberto Hernández. Pero también está por ahí Jean Haché, Gonzalo Pérez, entre otros. Por las chicas, creo que Karina Sanchez lo está haciendo muy bien, aunque ya en otra categoría. Para las féminas hacia el futuro, hay que esperar.
10. El campo más fácil para ti, el más difícil y el más lindo?El campo es tan fácil cómo vayas tu swing ese día.

Pero creo que La Estancia es un campo equilibrado que tiene para todos (anchos fairways, greens planos, largas distancias, etc..). Mas difícil? Para mí, Dye Fore y Cana Bay (ambos me dan mis pelas respectivas). Más lindo? Sin lugar a dudas Playa Grande, seguido de Corales.
11. Cada cuanto cambias tus palos? Te encariñas con ellos?No soy un jugador de cambiar mucho mis palos, pues los obtengo siempre luego de un “fitting”, y por lo tanto, no es aconsejable andar cambiando….y claro que me encariño con mis “niños”. Aunque últimamente, como no tengo mucho tiempo de jugar, se me han puesto bravitos (no consigo score).
12. Qué piensas del rol de los medios en nuestro deporte?Toñito fue un pionero y a la vez un visionario. A él no le podías exigir nada,
pues no tenia referente. Cuando empecé con él, me fue enseñando y junto a mi experiencia en la televisión (por mi otro trabajo), hicimos equipo y fuimos aprendiendo. Casi que nos convertimos en una escuela de prender y enseñar. Por eso me da rabia ver que hay medios que no respetan el golf, que han venido a querer solo lucrarse, sin amar este deporte. Para hablar de golf, hay que respetarlo, conocerlo, amarlo, mimarlo y entenderlo. Si no reúnes esas cualidades, por favor, busca otra disciplina…serás bien recibido!
13. Un deseo que deseas ver cumplido?Ver varias academias de golf para aprovechar tanto talento suelto….ver el nombre de un dominicano en el tope del tablero de un evento del PGA Tour…ver nuestro país avanzar hacia convertirse en un auténtico destino de golf….ver que los jugadores sean más serios con su hándicap, y finalmente…jugar algún día en Augusta!!

Well, imagine… it has been seven years working in television and I have learned a lot. Mi relationship with the golf courses, companies, as well as with the tournaments organizers, etc…. have paved my way, and when we estimate some event coverage, we grasp the opportunity and perform the MOC thing… we “show off”, ha, ha, ha…
8. Which are your favorite sports apart obviously from golf? Do you devote some time to them? Yes. I have played basketball all my life (in spite of my
size). I belong to the 4-40 league of which I was a founder member in 1995; this league works on Mauricio Báez Club. I play in position 1. Besides, I practise Taekwondo.
9. Do you consider that the Dominican Republic has great up-and-coming golf talents? If so, could you name a man and a woman?WOW… hopes… the current ones are Willito and Juan Carlos Perelló who are professional golfers and regarding the ones who are moving upwards could be Diego Schiffino and José Alberto Hernández, also Jean Haché, Gonzalo Pérez, amongst others. Regarding women, I think Karina Sanchez has a good performance, although in another category. I think we have to wait regarding women in the long run.
10. Could you name the easiest golf course? How about the most difficult and the most beautiful one?The easiest golf course depends on how your swing is going that day but I think La Estancia is a balanced golf course (spacious fairways, flat greens, long distances, etc.).

For me, the most difficult ones are Dye Fore and Cana Bay (both of them imply lots of efforts). And the most beautiful beyond all doubt is Playa Grande followed by Corales.
11. How often do you change your clubs? Did you learn to love them?I am not the kind of player that usually changes his clubs since I always get them after a “fitting” so it is not recommended to change them… and of course I grow fond of my “kids”. And as I do not have enough time to play lately, they make things hard for me (I do not get any score).
12. What do you think about the role of media in our sport?Toñito was a Pioneer and at the same time a visionary. As he did not have any benchmark there was nothing that could be demanded of him. When I started working with him, he taught me and along with my television experience (my previous job) we consolidated as a team and learned together. We almost became a school of learning and teaching. That is why it makes me furious when some media have no respect for golf; all they want is to make a profit without loving this sport at all. Before
speaking about golf it is necessary to respect, know, love, understand and lavish attention on the discipline. If you do not bring all those qualities together, please look for another discipline… you will be well received!

Could you tell us about a dream you want to come true?There are many… to see golf academies to realize the potential of many talented people… to see the name of a Dominican golfer on the top of a ranking in a PGA Tour event… to see our country growing to become a genuine golf destination… to see the players taking their handicap more seriously… and finally… to have the chance to play in Augusta some day!!
