E ngā maunga whakahī, e ngā wai whakariporipo e karapinepine mai ana kei raro i te maru o te Mounga Titohea.Nei rā te mihi matakuikui ki a koutou katoaKi ōu tātou mātua tūpuna e arahi i a tātou i roto i ēnei mahi, tēnei te mihi ki a rātou mā kua huri. Nā rātou te huarahi i whakatakoto hei hikoitanga mā tātou ngā uri
Nō reira, tātou mā e hikoi tahi nei, tēnā tātou
He mihi mahana ki ngā hau e wha e hāpai ana i ngā iwi o te motu. Kia kaha tonu tātou, kia whakatinanahia e tātou ngā mahi o te whānau nei. Otirā, ki a koutou i tae ki tēnei hui, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa.
The karakia above evokes the spiritual essence of Tāne. “Whāia, whāia” is an opening karakia and Tāne is known as the superior kaitiaki or guardian of knowledge, in particular, traditional knowledge. The karakia invites us to explore the collective and contemporary knowledge that is shared in the hui, as well as acknowledging the wisdom of those who have gone before us. Finally, the phrase ‘tihei mouri ora!’ gives life and energy to our mahi.

Nau mai, haere mai e te whānau ki te Taihauāuru. We, Te Komiti Whakahaere extend warm greetings to each of you who have come to Parihaka to participate, uplift and share with us. Very early on we decided that it was important for the motu to experience “life” here on the
marae and see what goes on at a grass roots level.
When designing the programme tangata whenua and local initiatives were pivotal. So, the first part of the programme creates the platform of returning
to the source, Hoki atu ki tō Mounga. Whānau whānui is a vital element when securing, strengthening and nurturing relationships within the wider
community. The kaupapa for Day Two is Taranakitanga which will showcase the importance of these relationships. The Parihaka Hikoi is about a
community who is committed to sustainability through positive change to infrastructure that meets the current needs of the people, Papakainga housing, Energy research, Passive Resistance to Climate Change and a

TOHU
Our tohu was designed by Te Ao Katene
Our beautiful tohu for the hui was designed by Te Ao Katene. Nei rā te mihi aroha ki a ia.
“This whakatauki can be applied when thinking of the traditional Māori philosophies of atuatanga, kaitiakitanga and tupua. Through re-establishment of these philosophies, important tikanga and kawa, there can be a greater opportunity to develop a deeper connection and a higher understanding when returning to these sacred sites of significance, whether they are maunga, awa or marae.
By reaching back into our past and revitalising the processes our tupuna followed when accessing these sites, whether through karakia, haka, waiata, hikoi or hoe waka, there is an opportunity to not only enhance your spiritual wellbeing but also to develop your physical and mental wellbeing through a matauranga Māori process.”
This year we have been given permission by the artist to use their design in our programme. He mihi nunui rawa atu ki a ia.
“This matakupenga (net) pattern is unique to Taranaki and is woven into the fabric of Puke Ariki. It represents our commitment to gather and safeguard knowledge, stories and taonga that nourish the people of Taranaki and beyond.”
Matakupenga by Glen Skipper

HOKIA KI TŌ MOUNGA KIA PUREA KOE E TE HAU A TAWHIRIMĀTEA
There are many variations to this whakatauki, Hoki atu, E hoki, however the meaning remains the same.
It invokes whānau to return home to be spiritually and physically cleansed, purified or sustained by the winds of Tawhirimātea. It also tells people to
return home to learn their own traditions under their maunga tapu. This whakatauki is thus fitting for our hui-ā-tau as we gather together at Parihaka under the
shelter of Mounga Taranaki.

Hau Pai Marire.
It is appropriate at this point that we end our time together with a karakia. This karakia acknowledges the journey we have travelled in our wānanga and the learnings we have experienced. The karakia clears the path way again as we move into our future.
