INTRODUCTION
Agriculture Station of Tarat, Serian is divided into two parts that is the agriculture and fishery.
The IFRPC aims to overcome the decline in the local river fish population.
4 areas for fishery sector. Among the species of fish available in this station are:
Empurau (Tor tambroides)Semah (Tor dourenensis)Tengadak (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii)Baung (Hemibagrus baramensis)
ACTIVITIES
Feed fish and Tubifex worm in tanks Cleaned and changed water in tanks Help staff to catch breeders for breeding Help in breeding of fishes: tengadak and baung Count baung and tengadak fry
Went to Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC), Agriculture Research Centre Semenggok, Private Farm in Serikin and Puri Johan Agro Farm in Kg Taee.
Side project: Effect of feeding frequency on weight of guppies Help in preparation for Hari Peladang Penternak dan Nelayan Kebangsaan
(HPPNK) Help UNIMAS students to collect baung fry
Main Project
Effect of Tubifex as the Supplementary Feed on the Growth and Gonad Maturation of Tengadak
(Barbonymus schwanenfeldii) Brood Stocks
INTRODUCTION
Live feed such as Tubifex contains more nutritional value and have significantly affect the growth rate of C. batrachus larvae (Alam and Mollah 1988)
In this project, Tubifex worm is fed live along with commercial feed to tengadak brood stock.
This project was done for a period of 8 weeks (15th January – 11th March 2016)
Tengadak
Tengadak - Barbonymus schwanenfeldii Freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae Grows up to 14 inches in length Quite similar to Java borb fish, Puntius gonionotus It has red dorsal fins with a black tip and two barbels at each end of the
upper lips. Benthopelagic Top 5 most expensive fish in Malaysia
Tubifex worm
Tubifex sp. is known as sludge worm Inhabit the sediments of lakes, rivers and sewer lines. As supplementary food either live or freeze dried Acts as feed ingredient and appetite stimulant in fishes High food values.
OBJECTIVES
To study the effect of Tubifex on as the supplementary diet on the growth and gonad maturation of Tengadak brood stocks
To study the growth performance of Tengadak brood stocks with different mixture of feed
To study the maturity of the reproductive organ of Tengadak brood stock
MATERIALS AND APPARATUS
9 pairs of tengadak brood
stock
9 HDPE tanks Culture of Tubifex Commercial fish feed
Multiparameter Dissolved oxygen meter
Digital weighing machine
Measuring apparatus
METHODOLOGY Fish are fed with 5% of its body weight Three treatments were used
Treatment 1 = 20% Tubifex + 80% pelletTreatment 2 = 40% Tubifex + 60% pelletTreatment 3 = 100% pellet
Each experimental feed are done in triplicates The design are randomized as follows:
- Treatment 1 (T1)
- Treatment 2 (T2)
- Treatment 3 (T3)
T1 T2 T3 T4 T5 T6 T7 T8 T9
Nine tanks were prepared by cleaning and filling with water. Aeration was placed
and flow through system was used
Taking initial weight and length
Placing 9 pairs of tengadak in 9 HDPE
tanks
The fish were acclimatised for 2
weeks and feed with commercial feed twice
a day.
The feed is slowly mixed with live
Tubifex for tanks 2 to 5, 7 and 9.
Tanks 1, 6 and 8 were fed with pellet. Tanks 2, 4 and 9 were fed
with T1 while tanks 3, 5 and 7 were fed with
T2.
Water quality is taken randomly every week.
Samplings were done every 2 or 3 weeks consist of weighing and measuring its
length.
RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS
The data for male of tank 7 on the 3rd week was unrecorded because only female tengadak was able to be caught.
As for tank 6, both tengadak were male on the 3rd and final sampling.

Average Standard Length of Female Brood Stock
Treatment 1Treatment 2Treatment 3
The highest average standard length pf brood stocks is when fed with treatment 1
During the final sampling, the females were observed for its egg. Most of the tengadak failed to spawn which may due to being out of its
spawning season (Richard Bailey and Brian Cole, 1999).
CONCLUSION
Growth of tengadak can be enhanced by feeding with Tubifex worm mixed with commercial feed.
Treatment 1 of 80% commercial feed and 20% Tubifex worm results in highest final average weight and length of tengadak brood stock.
Effect of Tubifex worm on gonad maturation was unable to be determined as no eggs were able to obtain from the female brood stock.
The project needs to be done in longer period not including the acclimatisation week to obtain the best result on its gonad maturation
