PART I

Coco-Cola Cup – 22nd April

Needing a big innings tohelp India reach thefinals, SachinTendulkar playedarguably his best ODIinnings few days short

of his 25

th

birthday. Thisinnings is referred asthe Desert Storm, bythose who were lucky towitness it. The Aussieattack was strong andthe total imposing. Theway SRT maneuvered

the chase was a lessonfor everyone. The onlyfault in the innings – India couldn’t win thematch.

PART II Coco-Cola Cup Final – 24th April

The final this timearound and Sachin wasdesperate to win theCup for the Indians. 2centuries in 3 dayshelped the Indian teambeat the Aussies veryeasily. The favoritesfaced the brunt of SRTto such an extent thattheir bowlers (especiallyShane Warne) would getnightmares on the verythought of bowling to

him. Kasprowiczrecently remarked thathe was happy notbowling to SRT now!!!





HYDERABAD

HURRICANE Hero-Honda Cup – 5th Match

Successfully chasing ascore of 350 is possible if 2 or 3 players score abig score. This legendscored more than 50% of India’s score, only to failby 3 runs at the end. A

wonderfully pacedknock which gave aglimpse of the littleman’s wide array of strokes (including somethat had been put awayin the attic) even at theage of 36. The humidweather added to thecomplexity of the run-chase. The match-lossmust have been heart-breaking for theveteran.







CENTURION

SACHIN ICC World Cup - 36th match, Pool A

India-Pakistan match inthe 2003 World Cup – need I say more?Chasing a score of 274,Sachin gave a start thathis partner, Sehwag,would have held close tohis heart. The overagainst Shoaib Akhtaris very well known to allcricket fans in India andPakistan. After thismatch, Shoaib was notthat force again. India

eased past the score andmade the final. Thismatch felt as good asthe World Cup that wenever won that year.

SYDNEY MARVEL Commonwealth Bank Series – 1st final

First century on Oz soilto steer India to theirfirst-ever win over Australia in Sydneycame about thanks toSachin’s wonderfulknock. This inningsseemed to be a master-class to the non-striker,Rohit Sharma, on howto play a match-winner.The two rotated thestrike well and tookIndia past the target

easily (in hindsight).This was Sachin’s replyto his detractors whoalways spoke about hisFinal Failures.

What do you say about aperson who loses hisfather in the middle of atournament (doesn’tmatter if it’s a WorldCup), goes home for thefuneral and then headsright back to thetournament. Amazingcommitment from thelegend. First matchafter the loss, SRTscores a beautifulhundred. Doesn’t matter

that the century wasagainst a lowly Kenya – the ability to put one’spersonal loss behind forthe team’s cause wasvery well evident
