THANK YOU FROM THE REFUGEE MINISTRY Asante Sana to Santa Catalina Parish from Boniface Mbonimpa and family. Asante Sana is Swahili for Thank You! Due to your tremendous outpouring of love and generosity for our Congolese refugee family, we collected $3903 after masses on the April 1-2 weekend. This wonderful contribution extends the family's stipend for Reception and Replacement into our country. This is an enormous help in light of the fact that over $2000 had to be spent on four sets of bunk beds and other needed items for their apartment that were not available at the Refugee Focus donation center. WHY I BECAME A HOSPITALITY MINISTER For the last three years of my wife's life, pretty much my entire time was spent taking care of her. The last year of her life it was 24-7, 365. I had to feed and clean her give her medicine and take care of her every need. After she passed away I was depressed and grieving for several months.

I finally decided I had better get on living. After a while, I found golf and traveling were not enough then two things happened that enriched my life. A good friend of mine, Tony Benigno, invited me to join the Knights of Columbus, and at a Sunday Mass there was an announcement that there was a need for Hospitality Ministers. I joined the Knights and decided to volunteer as a Hospitality Minister at the 7:00 a.m. Mass.

Every Sunday, that I am assigned, brings great joy to me to welcome fellow parishioners to the celebration of Mass. Now that I have been a Minister for a couple of years I

have become known to most of the regular 7:00 a.m. attendees and have developed a personal relationship with them. It has become greeting friends more than welcoming strangers. Becoming a very active Knight and a Hospitality Minister on Sundays and other church celebrations has definitely filled a spiritual need that I had.

PORQUE ME HICE UN MINISTRO DE HOSPITALIDAD Por los últimos tres años de la vida de mi esposa, casi todo mi tiempo lo dediqué a cuidar de ella. El último año de su vida fue 24-7 , los 365 dias del año. La alimentaba, el darle sus medicamentos y también estuve al cuidado de su limpieza, y de cuanto ella necesitaria. Después que ella falleció me deprimí y sufrí por algunos meses.

We are accepting applications for Director of C.A.R.E. Ministry and Custodian.

Under the direction of the Pastor, the Director of C.A.R.E. Ministry provides spir-itual support to homebound parishioners as well as offering bereavement support. This position is 30 hours per week and offers vacation, sick, medical benefits and holiday pay. The ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required. Applicant must have excellent communications, human relations, and interpersonal skills. Must have ability to travel locally as required and proficiency in MS Office. A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or equivalent work experience is required.

The custodian will perform general custodial duties to include cleaning and light maintenance of the parish and pastoral buildings. This position is 30 hours per week, offers vacation, sick, medical benefits and holiday pay. The ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required.

Todos los Domingos, que me han asignado, me trae una gran alegría dar la bienvenida a los filigreses para la celebración de la Misa. Ahora que he sido Ministro por un par de años he llegado a ser conocido por la mayoria de los asistentes regulares a la Misa de 7am. Y he desarrollado una gran relacion personal con ellos. Se ha convertido en un saludo de amigos más que dar la bienvenida a extraños. El convertirme en un miembro activo de los Caballeros de Colón y un Ministro de Hospitalidad los Domingos y junto a otras celebraciones de la Iglesia sin duda han llenado una necesidad espiritual que yo tenía.

When I f i rst started getting into my faith I wasn’t real ly sure how someone starts having a conversation with an omnipresent, invisible deity. Learning to pray can be diff icult at f irst but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it . If you’re at a loss for words whenever you sit down to pray I hope these suggestions help you to get the conversation going. TELL HIM ABOUT YOUR BURDENS Maybe someone you love is s ick and you want their healing more than anything or your l ife seems to be fal l ing apart and you’re not sure how you’re going to keep going on. These are al l crucial t imes to turn to Jesus. I ’m sure you’ve prayed l ike this before, “Jesus, please help me” or “God, get me through this .” Asking for the help of God is an important part of our spiritual l i fe. • Be honest with God. If you’re angry,

upset or confused it ’s okay. When you pray you don’t need to act or talk a certain way for Him to hear you.

• Ask Him to help you. It ’s great to get al l your feeling and frustrations off your chest but don’t leave it there. By inviting God into our problems we cooperate with His grace and strengthen our relationship with Him.

• Share what you are going through with a family member or a trusted friend. God often uses the people in our l ives to relay truth or direction to us. Find someone who can help you through these diff icult t imes.

THANK HIM FOR YOUR BLESS INGS It is important to share with Jesus your blessings as well as your burdens. When we spend time thanking God it becomes apparent how involved He is in our l ives. • Make a l i st and keep it by your bed.

Before you go to sleep add anything from your day that was a blessing to you.

• Stop and pray when you notice something great in your day. Just say, “thank you Jesus for this blessing.”

• Be more thankful for the people in your l i fe . Thank your mom or dad for cooking for you or let your best friend know that you’re grateful for their fr iendship.

PREPARE FOR TEMPTATIONS As we continue to pray and grow in our relationship with God we notice sins and struggles that get in the way of knowing Him more fully. These sins and temptations are great to bring up in prayer. It ’s diff icult to admit that we aren’t perfect but turning to God is the f i rst step to overcoming those habits, addict ions, and pitfal ls . By talking to Jesus about your sins and asking for the grace to overcome them you’l l see how merciful and patient He is . • Go to Confession. Before you say, “I

can’t do that.” recognize that i f you are holding on to sins then you’re not l iving your best l i fe. God wants you to l ive free from guilt , shame and regret. Go to confession, leave those sins in the past and get a clean slate.

• Don’t beat yourself up. Nobody’s perfect. Certainly our temptations may not go away overnight but if we persevere in prayer we wil l f ind that we are steadily moving closer to God and His Will . If you’re praying, you’re winning!

TELL HIM ABOUT YOUR DREAMS What do you hope to do with your l i fe? How do you hope to make the world a better place? God wants to hear about your dreams! God may already know what you l ike and what you hope to do but that doesn’t mean He doesn’t want to hear about it . The heart of God is the heart of a Father who loves his chi ldren. He believes in you and wants to see you l ive an incredible l i fe. Invite Him into your dreams and hopes for the future

and I promise He wil l make you more than you can ever imagine. • Be patient. Everything happens in

God’s t iming. Hang tight; God is moving even if He is not moving at the pace we would l ike Him to.

• Don’t worry. Maybe you don’t have everything planned out and you have no idea what you’re going to do. That’s totally cool! A great prayer i s , “Jesus I trust that you have great plans for me help me to do your wil l .”

DON’T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at al l . Conversations are a two-way street so it ’s important that we include t ime of si lence in our prayer l ife. Sometimes we say, “I never hear God! He never answers my prayers.” Well , have you ever thought maybe you don’t hear Him because you never l i sten? Scripture compares God’s voice to a quiet whisper that we must be sti l l in order to hear (1 Kings 19:11-14). If our l ives are constantly f i l led with noise we’l l miss that “quiet whisper.” • Find a good place to pray where

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Easter was nearly three weeks later this year than last. Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calculating the date was set by the Emperor Constantine in 325. The decision ended a very bitter controversy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it after the Passover was complete, on the Sunday after the first full moon of springtime. The ecclesiastical rules do not exactly connect with the astronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose Sunday. The traditional rule is that Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles between March 22 and April 25.

The actual tables and methods for computing the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle variations and mind-bending exceptions and charts with “golden numbers,” “dominical letters,” and “epacts” measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesiastical calculations actually overrode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Christians to combine their celebrations, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. In principle, the Catholic Church is open to an ecumenical agreement on a fixed date for Easter, but we desire a unanimous decision from the World Council.

Algunas personas querían sincronizar la Pascua, con Pascua en el decimocuarto día del mes judio, y sus oponentes lo quierian después de la Pascua, el domingo después de la primera luna llena de la primavera.
