MEYERTON. - On Sunday March 1 SouthAfrican amputee para-triathlete, Stan An-drews, competed and placed 9th overall inthe 2015 Buffalo City ITU World Paratri-athlon Event.The event hosted a total of 39 top male

and female international para-triathletes inall five categories. The men’s PT4 categoryheld the fiercest competition with 16 en-trants (six of whom were South Africans)of the total 39 entrants taking part in thiscategory.Andrews reported the swim to be tough

with a heavy side-current that affected allthe competitors equally. Entrants were giv-

en the opportunity to make use of a ‘pre-tran-sition’, where athletes are able to remove theirwetsuits and put on their prostheses in an areanear the water. Despite having competed inmany other triathlons, the ‘pre-transition’wasa first for Andrews, who felt that it cost himvaluable seconds, causing his Transition 1time to be 30 seconds slower than in previousevents.The bike course went well for Andrews,

who feels that cycling is his weakest disci-pline of the triathlon event. The wind playedinto his hands and helped his climb back upthe express way, leaving him ready to jumpinto Transition 2 after two loops.

The run was challenging for Andrews who,after overtaking fellow South African com-petitor Nico Nel was in 10th place 28 secondsbehind Spaniard Rafael Solis Torres.Ultimately, Andrews placed 9th out of the

field due to the disqualification of a fellowcompetitor, the reason for which is unknown,and was the first South African to finish.In nineweeks’ time,Andrewswill compete

in Egypt with the goal of scoring enoughpoints to compete in theGrand Final in Chica-go, USA.Stan wishes to thank all those whose con-

tributions made this weekend a success,namely TSA and Buffalo City, as well as Bio-

gen andNoExcuses, who contributed to thecost of the trip.* Stan grew up in Meyerton, attended

school at Meyerton Primary and then Gen-eral Smuts High. He now resides in Roode-poort.The Midvaal municipality will be host-

ing a 5km fun walk on March 21 in Meyer-ton and the beneficiary of the walk will beStandwithStan, a non profit organisation hefounded in 2013. StandwithStan providesdisadvantaged amputees with prosthetics,mentoring andmaintenance of the prosthet-ic in order for the amputee to regain mobili-ty and a high quality of life.

in order save the lives of others.”Mofokeng was donating blood alongside

his wife Matshidiso Mofokeng (27) who alsobelieves that blood donation saves lives. DonorHeidi van der Merwe says, “ I always maketime to donate blood on a regular basis. Thisis just my bit to ensure that I can one day savesomeone’s life.” According to SANBS, it is-

sues over one-million blood components annu-ally. Blood donor recruitment in South Africais based on a programme endored by theWorldHealth Organisation, which specifies the selec-tion of voluntary, non-remunerated blood do-nors. Low-risk blood donors are identified asvolunteer blood donorswho donate blood sole-ly to help those in dire need of blood.

VEREENIGING. - Big TimeEvents will launch a golf day inaid of Cornelius Jacobs who suf-fers from arthrogryposis multi-plex congenital (AMC) onMarch 27.

This will make for a fun-filledday for a good cause. Childrenwho suffer from AMC are bornwith one or more joint contrac-tures and have abnormal fibrosisof the muscle tissue, causingmuscle-shortening, and aretherefore unable to do passiveextension and flexion in the af-fected joint or joints. The golfdaywill take place at the RivieraGolf Club. The format is Ameri-can Scramble Betterball Stable-ford and will cost R1 600 forfour players. Those who want tosponsor a hole can do so for R2500 and if you want to play andsponsor a hole it will cost R4000. This is for a very goodcause as this boy needs 24-hourcare.

VEREENIGING. - Following visists to theSedibeng region last year, Gauteng PremierDavid Makhura in his State of the ProvinceAddress (SOPA) outlined Government’splan to shift the economy of the region fromits said reliance on the steel industry and todiversify by including tourism and entertain-ment, agro-processing and logistics.

Makhura said, “The development of the

newVaal River City (hydropolis) aims to un-lock the potential of the waterfront develop-ments in the Emfuleni and Midvaal areas.”

Makhura adds that the private sector plansto invest more than R4 billion into this devel-opment, which will stimulate much neededeconomic activity.

Makhura highlighted that permanent em-ployment would be created through some ofthe upcoming projects:

“We are working with the private sectorto support 32 black farmers to plant barleyand maize for the nearby Heineken Brewery.The project will create 1 000 permanent jobsper annum over three years.

“Furthermore we will introduce blue

economy initiatives, which will entail in-tense recycling and re-use of waste to protectthe environment.

“Our cities are currently too dirty.We needto go back to basics as we build new cities,”Makhura concluded.

VEREENIGING. - The Ultimate Race-way is hosting the first round of the MSA/TORC Nationals Championships onMarch 28 at the Vaal Show Grounds.

Several SA record are definitely at sta-ke and competitors can’t wait for the Nati-onal Championship to start. For the firstyear every class will have to qualify fortheir grid positions. The classes attending

theNationals will be Stockrods, 1660cc, Pin-to’s, 2.1 litres, Hotrods, Super Saloons andthe V8 Sprint class.

The Ninja Midgets and Super Midgetswill also be there to take part in the regionalchampionships.

It will be a day full of racing and startsat 17:00. Competitors from all over the coun-try are entering and the organisers hope tosee every oval spectator at this event.
