Ladies and Gentlemen,

Last summer I was recording an album at Abbey Road Studios with a Finnish pop star and the Philharmonia orchestra. The project was an absolute pleasure from

beginning to end not least because all the songs we were recording were classics from the stage and screen. There is something irresistible about this kind of

repertoire: the unbeatable combination of nostalgia, charm and showbiz glitter makes it appeal to all generations.

It struck me during the sessions that a similar programme would make a

fantastic Christmas concert for the Cambridge Philharmonic and so here we are ready to celebrate Christmas on Broadway!

Our soloists, Rebecca Bottone and Nicholas Garrett, are firm favourites with the

Cambridge Phil and were delighted that they are joining us again for this concert. They are renowned both for their operatic pedigree and their wonderful singing of musical theatre, most recently at the Châtelet in Paris for the critically-acclaimed

French premiere of Sondheims A Little Night Music.

I have loved putting this programme together especially for the Cambridge Philharmonic. We hope it starts your festive season with a sparkle and we wish you

Happy Holidays, as they say on Broadway!

FIRST HALF 1. Curtain Up arranged Bob Krogstad An overture of Broadway hits including There's No Business like Show Business, Phantom of the Opera, Don't Rain on My Parade, If He Walked into My Life, and Everything's Coming Up Roses. 2. One (1975) - music Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics Edward Kleban, from the musical

A Chorus Line With nineteen main characters, the show is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical. The show provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers. One is a number created to showcase an un-named star and it is reprised as the big finale. The show was an instant success that ran for more than 6130 performances and won numerous Tony awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1976 and, in the UK, the Laurence Olivier Prize for best new musical in 1977. 3. I Could Have Danced All Night (1956) - music Frederick Loewe, lyrics Alan

Jay Lerner, from the musical My Fair Lady This song hardly needs an introduction. Sung by Eliza Doolittle having finally got it and after dancing round the room with Professor Higgins, shes just too exhilarated to go to bed! The show is based on the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw and has been called the perfect musical. There is to be a new film of the show due in 2012, this time properly filmed in London and at Ascot rather than the Warner Brothers back lot and with a screenplay based on the original show and play by Emma Thompson. 4. Dont Rain On My Parade (1964) - music Jule Styne, lyrics Bob Merrill, from

the musical Funny Girl Famously sung by Barbra Streisand on stage and in the film and still one of her signature songs. In the musical, which is a semi-biographical story of the life of Broadway star Fanny Brice, she sings this song showing complete determination to succeed and to marry Nick Arnstein, despite his gambling past. Needless to say it all goes horribly wrong and he goes to prison. The song is reprised at the end as Fanny picks up the pieces of her theatrical life again. Like many Broadway songs, this one has been sung by men and women alike, and the arrangement we hear tonight was written for Bobby Darin.

5. Night and Day (1932) - music and lyrics by Cole Porter for the musical play Gay Divorce

Famously sung by Fred Astaire in the 1934 film of the play renamed the Gay Divorcee, it has become a classic in what is often called the Great American Songbook. When Hollywood filmed Porters life story, the film was called Night and Day. It has been sung and recorded by more people than you can shake a stick at; this a cappella arrangement is by Peter Gritton. 6. Bring Him Home (1974) - music Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics Alain

Boublil, from the musical Les Miserables Herbert Kretzmer adapted the French lyrics for the British production at the Barbican in 1985. The main character Jean Valjean sings Bring Him Home hoping for the safe return of the student Marius from the barricades. The show is a dramatisation of Victor Hugos epic 1862 novel and is still showing in London, having celebrated its 10,000th performance in January 2010. 7. Lets Face the Music (1936) - music and lyrics by Irving Berlin, from the film

Follow the Fleet The film followed on the enormous success of the film Top Hat. A rather thin plot is enlivened by wonderful Berlin songs and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers amazing dance routines. This arrangement for strings, flutes and rhythm section was made by Tim Redmond for the soprano Natasha Marsh. 8. Unforgettable (1951) - music and lyrics by Irving Gordon Another contribution to the great American songbook. Nat King Cole is the most famous singer of the song, first to record it with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. It became Coles signature tune and Jack Benny on his TV show once introduced Cole as the best friend a song ever had. In 1991, Nat King Coles daughter, Natalie, released a duet version, which, with the help of technology, allowed her to sing with her late father. It is this arrangement that we hear tonight. 9. Holiday Songs (1990) - music John Williams, from the soundtrack of the film

Home Alone The film is a story of an 8-year old boy left behind when his family heads off to spend Christmas in Paris and how he outwits two would-be burglars with a series of booby traps. It all ends happily-ever-after of course with the family returning just in time. The three John Williams pieces, the theme song Somewhere in my Memory, the carol Star of Bethlehem and the Merry Christmas finale all add to the happy mood.

10. Christmas on Broadway The first half ends with a selection of well-known numbers from the shows including God Bless Us Everyone, It's Beginning To Look Like Christmas, March Of The Toys, My Favorite Things, Pine Cones and Holly Berries, Toyland and We Need A Little Christmas.

~~~ INTERVAL ~~~
SECOND HALF 11. West Side Story Selection (1957)  music Leonard Bernstein, from the 1967
Broadway musical and 1961 film Music from the classic love story of Tony and Maria, set in the New York of the 1950s. This selection was arranged by Jack Mason, one of the leading orchestrators of his day. 12. Over the Rainbow (1938)  music Harold Arlen, lyrics E Y Harburg, written
for the film The Wizard of Oz Over the Rainbow has been rated by the American Film Institute as the greatest movie song of all time, and along with Irving Berlins White Christmas was one of the songs best loved by American troops in World War II. Judy Garland pre-recorded the song in 1938, and it was released as a single in 1939. Strangely, it was cut from the original version of the film, and it was only in 1956, when MGM released the first true soundtrack album from the film, that the film version of the song was heard. 13. Cabaret (1966)  music John Kander, lyrics Fred Ebb, from the 1966
Broadway musical and 1972 film of the same name The film version of Cabaret, and its title song, sung by Liza Minnelli, has come to epitomize the nightlife of 1930s Berlin, set against the ominous gathering strength of the Nazi party. The film is derived from the original 1966 musical based on Christopher Isherwoods The Berlin Stories and the subsequent play I Am a Camera. 14. Swonderful (1927)  music George Gershwin, lyrics Ira Gershwin, introduced
in the Broadway musical Funny Face: film version released 1957 Swonderful is one of the standards and has been performed and recorded by numerous singers. It was also one of only four of the original songs from the Broadway musical to be included in the 1957 film starring Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, and Kay Thompson. This choral arrangement is by David Blackwell.
15. By Strauss (1936) - music George Gershwin, lyrics Ira Gershwin, included in the film The Show is On
By Strauss was performed by the Gershwins at private parties before being included in the 1936 film The Show is On. It is also included in the 1951 film An American in Paris where it is performed by Gene Kelly and Oscar Levant. This brilliantly inventive arrangement was made by the composer Adrian Williams  and was revised especially for tonights performance. 16. Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire (1944)  music and lyrics by Mel
Tormé and Bob Wells The Christmas Song  subtitled Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire - was reportedly composed in the hot American summer of 1944, and according the performing rights association BMI, is the most performed of all the Christmas songs. It has been recorded many times by a variety of artists, including the co-composer, Mel Tormé, who has recorded it three times, in 1954, 1965 and 1992. The sumptuous orchestration we hear tonight is by Bob Lowden. 17. Baby, Its Cold Outside (1944) - music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, made
famous in the film Neptunes Daughter in 1949 This was a piece Loesser wrote for himself and his wife to sing at parties. She was furious when he sold it to MGM for the film, but it won the Academy Award for the best original song of the year 1949. It has been performed by many duos over the years, including, recently, by Norah Jones and Willie Nelson; tonights version was arranged for Sammy Davis, Jr. and Carmen McRae. Loesser wrote more than 700 songs, many of which became standards, most famously Two Sleepy People and Slow Boat to China. His most famous musicals are probably Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without ReallyTrying. 18. That Old Black Magic (1942) - music Harold Arlen, lyrics Johnny Mercer The lyrics of That Old Black Magic were specifically written with Judy Garland in mind, and she duly recorded it in 1942. Since then it has become a standard, recorded by many artists over the years, including, amongst many others, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. Marilyn Monroe also sang the song - in a slightly off-key version - in the film Bus Stop in 1956.
19. Winter Wonderland (1934)  music Felix Bernard, lyrics Richard B Smith This classic Christmas song has been recorded by countless artists and is widely held to have contributed to the classic vision of Christmas. The reference in the song to He'll say Are You Married? We'll say No man, but you can do the job when you're in town!"  was at one time thought to be inappropriate for childrens ears and the words were changed, but they are now normally included as in the original. 20. New York, New York (1977)  music John Kander, lyrics Fred Ebb: theme
music from the film of the same name The film, directed by Martin Scorcese, is a musical tribute to the town and starred Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli as a pair of musicians and lovers. Liza Minnelli sang the song in the film but it has been particularly associated with Frank Sinatra. He used it in his concert performances at the Radio City Music Hall and subsequently recorded it in 1979. It became one of his signature songs but the composers never did like the fact that Sinatra changed some of the words! 21. White Christmas (1942)  music and lyrics by Irving Berlin, from the film
Holiday Inn White Christmas is without doubt the most famous of all the Christmas songs. It was sung in the film Holiday Inn as a duet between Bing Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds, her voice being dubbed by Martha Mears, but it was Bing Crosbys solo 1942 recording, re-recorded in 1947, that is the familiar version we know today. Much of the original appeal of the song seems to have been its comforting references to home at a time when American forces were heavily engaged in WWII, but it rapidly became a world-wide favourite, and it is still reckoned to be the biggest selling single of all time, with estimated total sales of over 50 million copies to date. This arrangement is by perhaps the greatest of all Broadway orchestrators, Robert Russell Bennett.
