MBA students establish tripartite relationship with Government and social enterprises The School of Business has formed a tripartite relationship with the Home Affairs Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government andvarious social enterprises to provide more opportunities for students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings.

YuLizhong, whoreceivedhisMasterofBusinessAdministration(MBA)last year, says that he learnt a great deal from working with Hong Kong TransLingualServices(HKTS)forhisMBAProjectbecausethisgavehiman opportunity to work in a small team on a client-based consultancy report for a social enterprise.

“HKTS isasocialenterprisespecialising intranslationservicesmainlyfor ethnic minorities in Hong Kong,” Lizhong explains. “We spenta few months collecting data from observations, interviews and questionnaires, and in the end came up with some concrete business proposals to improve the enterprise’s overall effectiveness andefficiency,” he recalls.

Lizhong says that the experience was both rewarding and inspiring.“Socialenterprisesexistprimarily forasocialgood, butasopposedtocommercialorganisationswhoseultimategoalistoearnasmuchprofit

as possible, social enterprises remain relatively less studied and researched. The experiencehasopenedupmyeyestosociallyresponsiblebusinesses, whichIamsure will be useful in my future career,” he adds.

Mr. Ryan Choi, OperationManager of HKTS, says that the team’s performanceexceededhis expectations. He comments: “Theydid a thorough analysis of ourenterprise and offered some really useful strategies for improvement in marketing and many other areas of our business. Their professionalism and efficiency impressed us throughout the partnership.”

Anothergraduate,JamesAu,workedwithImage21.“Image21isasocialenterprisewhich provides multimedia production services for non-profit organisations, educational institutions and small- to medium-sized enterprises. My team’sobjective was to help it survive in keen competition and sustain its social mission to create employment opportunities for the youth and foster in them a sense of entrepreneurship,” says James.

Along with HKTS, Image21 is among a list of social enterprises funded by theEnhancingSelf-ReliancethroughDistrictPartnershipProgramme(theProgramme)establishedundertheHomeAffairsDepartment.TheProgrammeaimstoincreasethe skills and capacities of the employable and provide opportunities for the disadvantaged to upgrade themselves and to be effectively integrated into the community.

James admits that his team encountered loads of difficulties throughout the nine-monthconsultancyperiod.“Oneofthebiggestchallengeswasthattheteamhaddifferent ways of approaching the project, and it took a lot of communication and compromise every time before we came to a decision that everybody was happy with,” he reveals.

Apart from communication skills, James says that he has acquired a clearer picture ofhowsocialenterprises runtheirbusiness. “Thepeople factorplaysan integralrole in the success of a social enterprise, and so does the money factor, because both are requisite for the execution of any business plans,” he stresses.
