    Introduction

    Loss of productivity due to health & associated issues contributes to approximately45% GDP1

    Strategies and efforts are required to promote workplace health needs to bettermanage employees health so that it will not reduce our business and economicdevelopments2

    The 2010 National Health Survey indicates that 39.1% do not obtain sufficientphysical activity. This increases the risk of premature death, cardiovasculardisease, metabolic disorders, cancers, weight gain, depression, and acceleratedfunctional decline3.

    Singapore has one of the fastest aging populations in AsiaFailure to manage thegrowing aging population properly will have major impacts in business, economic,social and health sectors2.

    With changing demographics and corporate landscape, there will be a growingdemand for professionals in the area of health promotion to educate, plan andspearhead cost-effective programs to promote health and well-being of individuals,especially in chronic disease management and early adoption of healthy lifestyles.

    Nanyang Polytechnic in collaboration with the Singapore Health Promotion Boarddeveloped the Specialist Diploma in Health Promotion with the aim to equipindividuals with sound theoretical and evidence-based knowledge in healthpromotion principles and processes. Upon completion of the course, students willbe able to develop and implement strategies to improve our societys collectivehabits, attitudes and behaviors and enhance the health and well-being of differentpopulation groups for improved productivity and growth. Students can expect tolearn from experienced trainers from the School of Health Sciences.

    Course Objectives

    Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to design, plan andorganize health promoting and intervention programs.

    Course Information

    The course, comprising two Post-diploma certificates (PDCs), is conducted part-timeover two semesters lasting approximately 12 months.

    Semester 1PDC 1 Foundations in Health Promotion serves to provide trainees with foundationalknowledge in lifestyle-related diseases and core principles underlying healthpromotion. Knowledge in nutritional sciences will allow trainees to understand theimportance of nutritional balance in promoting health and well-being.

    Semester 2PDC 2 Health Promotion Practice will introduce trainees to various researchmethodologies and cover the broad socioeconomic framework and strategicchallenges facing an organization, which impacts the implementation of healthpromotion programs. Trainees will acquire the ability to plan, conduct and evaluate

    health promotion activities empirically, and be required to work in groups to completea health promotion project to facilitate the integration of the knowledge and skills atthe end of the course.

    Training ScheduleClasses will be conducted 3 times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdayevening from 6.30pm9.30pm, with occasional full day workshops on Saturdays.

    Course Outline

    Post-Diploma Certificate 1: Foundations in Health Promotion (135hrs)

    Concepts & Theories in Health Promotion (60hrs)

    This module examines the core principles and concepts in health promotion.Students will explore the determinants of health, behavioral change theories andhealth promotion strategies. It also covers principles of social marketing, healthysettings, health literacy and building of partnerships. This module offers students theopportunity to develop knowledge and skills to apply principles of health promotion to

    plan, implement and evaluate health promotion programs.

    Lifestyle & Diseases (45hrs)

    This module serves to highlight the intricate relationships between diseases andlifestyles. Students will be introduced to the prevalence, pathophysiology and impactof common lifestyle diseases. It also covers stress-related disorders and the effectsof aging such as dementia.

    Essentials of Nutrition Science (30hrs)

    This module aims to provide students with a basic understanding of nutritionalscience and the importance of nutritional balance in promoting health and well-being.Students will learn dietary sources and biological functions of major nutrients,nutrient requirement in the different stages of growth and how to read food labels.Impact of these nutrients on health and well-being will also be covered. They willperform critical reviews on literature regarding nutrition education and the role ofnutrition in health promotion, and in the process, they will acquire the skills to identifyand critique health promotion programs in nutrition at various settings like schools,workplaces, communities, hospitals/ clinics, and homes.

    Post-diploma Certificate 2: Health Promotion Practice (150hrs)

    Health Policies & Health Economics (30hrs)

    This module aims to provide students with the ability to interpret generalepidemiological studies and an understanding of the health trends in the populationand the burden of disease. It also aims to provide students an understanding of thenational health policies in relation to their economic, political and social contexts.Health promotion policies will also be discussed in terms of its application withinvarious settings and its impact on productivity.

    Research Methodologies (30hrs)

    This module will examine the strengths and weaknesses of quantitative and

    qualitative research methodologies. Students will be exposed to common surveymethods, questionnaire design and qualitative and quantitative data analysis toassess needs and to evaluate the social and economic impact of health promotioninterventions.

    Change Management for Health Promotion (30hrs)

    Students will be introduced to the Whole Systems Theory of change so as to engagekey stakeholders in the organization and/or community. They will be introduced tothe concepts and tools used in change management, to enable them to effecttransformational change in the organization and/or community that they work with to

    ensure that health intervention programmes are sustainable.

    Health Promotion Project (60hrs)

    This module enables students to integrate various concepts learnt to develop ahealth promotion program proposal for the workplace, community or schools. Thestudent will conduct a needs analysis to identify corporate/ community/ managementgoals when planning health promotion interventions. The module will expose thestudent to various funding resources available and licenses / permits required toorganize events in public places. It will enable the student to develop an effectiveand sustainable health promotion program that would have high participation and

    develop social capital which is of direct relevance to the various settings.

    Assessment

    Assessment consists of presentations, reports, group projects, written assignments,and examinations.

    Certification

    Participants will be required to complete all modules with a minimum of 85%attendance each. Participants will be awarded with Post Diploma Certificate 1 inFoundations in Health Promotion upon completion of Semester One and PostDiploma Certificate 2 in Health Promotion Practice upon completion of SemesterTwo. Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be awarded theSpecialist Diploma in Health Promotion by Nanyang Polytechnic.

    Entry requirements

    Local polytechnic diploma or university degree in a relevant discipline in health orsocial sciences; and Minimum 6 months relevant working experience. Applicants who do not meet the above admission requirements may be

    considered on a case by case basis.
