Foreword
Sendai - greenery spreads out from its mountains, numerous clear streams flow throughits bosom, its farmlands provide abundant harvest, and beautiful seashores decorate itsborders. Sendai is an attractive city filled with beautiful and diverse natural landscapes.Historically, Sendai prospered as the castle town, or the capital of the wealthy Sendaihan, ruled by the Date family. During this period, Sendai developed its owncharacteristic culture and tradition, and became known as the “City of Trees.”In the past, the City of Sendai worked on designing a comfortable and pleasant urban environment, such as the conservation of the natural environment, promotion of greening, and creation of a beautiful urban landscape, in order to promote urban development that is characteristic and suitable for the “City of Trees.” In addition to this, the City strived to develop land allocation projects that started with reconstruction after the war, and improved urban infrastructure, such as roads, sewerage systems, and subways.Urban planning is related to the very foundation of urban development, supporting the healthy development and orderly improvement of cities, and the healthy and cultural city lifestyles and diverse urban activities of people living in them.It is necessary to gain an accurate understanding of and respond to the diverse urban issues facing Sendai City, such as the declining population and progressive aging society that will become a reality in the not-too-distant future, as well as disaster prevention and mitigation against global environmental issues and natural disasters.Even in such a difficult period and environment, the City of Sendai must reinforce the centrality of the city in contributing to the development of Tohoku and proactively implement the necessary measures towards the creation of an urban space that will create sustainable vitality and exchange, while maintaining its character that has dated back to the feudal period.
This pamphlet contains an outline of Sendai's urban development, mainly focusing on its urban planning.We hope it will help you learn more about our city.
