Sensors / Transducers
• A transducer is an energy converter that convertsone physical quantity into another.
• A sensor is an input-transducer that converts a certain physical quantity (temperature, pressure, light intensity, etc.) in an electric signal (voltage, current, frequency, phase, etc.)
SensorsActive sensor: requires external power to operate. Eg: thermistors, strain gauges, capacitive & inductive sensors
Other name: parametric sensors (output is a function of a parameter - like resistance)
Passive sensor: generates its own electric signal and does notrequire a external power source to operate.Eg: thermocouples, piezoelectric sensors, pH-probe
Other name: self-generating sensors
Note: some define these exactly the other way around
Sensors
Contact sensor: a sensor that requires physical contact with the stimulus.
Eg: strain gauges, most temperature sensors
Non-contact sensor: requires no physical contact. Eg: most optical and magnetic sensors, infrared sensors,
infrared (imaging) thermometers, etc.

System Elements
• Input range: Imin, Imax : (0 to 104 Pa), (100 to 250 °C)
• Output range: Omin, Omax : (4 to 20 mA), (4 to 10 mV)
• Input span (Full-Scale Input: IFS) : Imax-Imin : (104 Pa), (150°C)
• Output span (Full-Scale Output: OFS) : Omax-Omin : (16 mA), (6 mV)(Full-Scale Deflection: f.s.d.)
Lineair System Elements
O=f(I) is the ideal straight line that connects A(Imin,Omin) to B(Imax,Omax)
Non-Lineair System ElementsA function N(I) is the difference between actual and ideal straight-line behavior
Non-Lineair System Elements
Copper-constantan (Type T) thermocouple junction, between 0°C and 400°CV
Thermistor (NTC)

Environmental effect on System Elements
=> Standard environmental conditionsEg. 20°C, 50% RH, 10V supply voltage
Environmental effect on System Elements
=>
Standard conditions: K, IM=OKM is the change in sensitivity for unit change in IM
Environmental effect on System Elements
=>
Standard conditions: K, II=OKI is the change in zero bias for unit change in II
Environmental effect on System Elements
Environmental effect on System ElementsNon-Linear Case
Tb [K] : T body, objectTs [K] : T sensor surface
Sensitivity with respect of the object’s temperature
Hysteresis in System Elements
Hysteresis in System Elements
Hysteresis in System Elements
Causes of hysteresis:
-Friction (static vs. dynamic)-Structural changes in materials (magnetism)-Loosely coupled mechanical systems-Temp change with thermal storage
Resolution in System ElementsResolution: - Largest change in I (DIR)that can occur without any corresponding change in O- Smallest discernible change in the measured value
Saturation and Dead band
Saturation = span-end nonlinearityDead band = insensitivity in a specific range of input signals
Error bands in System Elements
Total element performance (manufacturers)
Generalised Model of a System Element
Generalised Model of (Type T) Thermocouple
Statistical CharacteristicsPrecision vs. Accuracy
Precision ~ Repeatability Accuracy ~ Maximum expected error
Lack of repeatability is due to random effects in the element and its environment
Making reasonable assumptions for the probability density functions of I, IM, II
Statistical Characteristics
