「Ramadan Tent」

A few months ago, I went to the Ramadan Tent hosted by the Muslim Community of Miyazaki. There was a free fast-breaking dinner featuring halal dishes from different countries. I enjoyed the pilaf seasoned with distinctive spices as well as meat and vegetables. The best part of the event, however, was the sight of people congregating in one location regardless of their religion or nationality and enjoying food and conversation. People had a relaxing time and were smiling as if what was happening around the world at the time were a lie. Staff: M.K

I do not get to go on a business trip to my home country or overseas like my fellow prefectural CIRs do, but I have the privilege of meeting newcomer JETs firsthand than anyone else in Miyazaki. It is through my job as a CIR that I have come to believe that even when you are reaching 7, 80, there is still room for growth and change as long as you have the willingness to pursue them. Many people I have met through the JET Programme are living proof: they have inspired, amazed, and impressed me with not only their fresh smiles and enthusiasm at our first meeting, but also their growth and transformation as they settle and thrive in Miyazaki. So my heart sinks when someone comes up to me and says how his entire office smiles at him yet thinks to themselves that he is an “idiot” because of the unintentional harms that he did in the beginning, even though from what I understand he has made ten times more effort in his work than many of his peers over the past years. A first impression may tell a lot about a person but does not explain the entirety. The world would be a better place to live if we have just a little bit more patience and humor to embrace mistakes and give each other a second chance. At the end of the day, nobody is perfect in the world, including ourselves!
