WANGANUI MANAWATU SEA FISHING CLUB 1 Wharf Street, PO Box 4150, Wanganui wanganuimanawatuseafishingclub.co.nz COMMODORES REPORT A big thank you to all who attended the recent AGM, we had a very good attendance. At the meeting we had a couple of changes to the committee with Damon Wagstaff and John Cain resigning. We welcome new members Ron Brignall and Todd Woodthorpe to the committee. The rest of the committee members have elected to stay on. A vote was taken at the meeting and it was decided to increase fees by $10. We had prize giving for the heaviest fish weighed in this year, with the results in the newsletter. Following the AGM we had refreshments and a barbeque which was well supported. We are going to start using electronic access (FOB) for financial members starting from the 1st of October, so your old keys will no longer work to access the club rooms or the boat wash after this date. Congratulations to Terry Egan who has been made a life member of the club. Moving toward summer, we are painting the interior of the club rooms as well as laying new carpet this will complement our recently completed deck and sliding doors. Our annual raffle is now on sale and your support with selling these is greatly appreciated. Money raised from this goes towards improvements of our club and clubrooms. The heaviest fish competition has once again started so don’t forget to weigh your fish in. Brian Tapa 06 3484077, 021 2484077, email:brian@bluefinconsultancy.co.nz. HEAVIEST FISH WEIGHED IN FOR THE YEAR 1ST JULY 2015 TO 30TH JUNE 2016

WARNINGThere are no navigation lights at all at the Wanganui entrance. Please be careful. We will be bringing it to the attention of those responsible for the lights.

On 1 October 2016, New Zealand, is required to change a number of maritime VHF repeater channels. These changes are being made to make space for newly allocated services for ship tracking and data services.

The changes will largely affect Coastguard licenced VHF channels. In Coastguard Wanganui’s case the new operating channel will become Channel 18.

It is important to note that the existing marine Channel 16 used for safety and distress purposes will not change.

Please note the current channels are effective until 1 October 2016, and switch over will occur to the new channels within two weeks of this date.

Once the switch has been made, the old channel will immediately become obsolete - there will be no simultaneous running of both channels.

No one should need to buy a new VHF Radio to access the new VHF or NowCasting channels - all current VHF radios will be able to access the new channels.

A website called www.retune.co.nz containing in-depth information about the changes has been set up and it contains both maps with old and new channels.

Users do not need a new VHF Radio to access the new channels.

Channel 16 - the marine distress channel is not changing.

Current channels are effective up until 1 October 2016.

    Coastguard Wanganui Subscriptions

Our subscriptions are due to be paid now for the 20016/2017 financial year. These need to be paid as soon as possible so you do not become unfinancial.

If you are not financial and need Coastguard Wanganui assistance for breakdowns etc. you will be asked to cover the cost of the rescue.

Coastguard Wanganui subs are $60 per annum

If you prefer to join Coastguard NZ their Subs are $115 per annum and when you join you have the option to select which unit you prefer to belong to. Coastguard Wanganui has opted not to join the national scheme for the time being.

Please go on line at Coastguard NZ Membership and select the best deal for your boating requirements.

Club members have the opportunity to record the weight of a fish caught on a rod throughout the whole year. They can record the weight in the folder that is situated next to the scales just inside the clubroom doors. At the end of the year the weights are tallied and the prizes are awarded at the AGM. There are three prizes per species category with 1st prize receiving $150, 2nd prize $100 and 3rd prize $50.

It is well worth weighing in any big fish you catch on your rod and being in the running to win some cash and bragging rights.
