Фундація ім. Тараса Шевченка знаходиться на перехресті. Але це не одне з перехресть невизначеності, це

скоріше дорожній орієнтир. Нам вдалася визначна подорож протягом всієї історії Фундації, але попереду

ще багато шляху до наших мрій.

Я присвятив цій організації значну частину свого життя і можу впевнено сказати, що Шевченківська

Фундація є суспільно-перетворюючою установою. Можна зробити пожертву на користь багатьох

благодійних організацій, які переслідують благородні цілі, але у вашому житті знайдеться небагато

можливостей підтримати такий заклад, який, без перебільшення, трансформує майбутнє української

громади в Канаді. Фундація ім. Тараса Шевченка одна з таких. Щоб ця трансформація відбулася, наша

Рада Директорів уміло керує та використовує наші фонди, а моє завдання як президента - координувати

досвід та навички Ради, наших працівників та волонтерів задля реалізації цього бачення.

Небагато хто знає, але окрім 12-ти зборів протягом року, на дві з яких ми збираємося особисто,

наша Рада Директорів, члени комітетів, виконавчий директор та адміністративна команда разом з

волонтерами роблять набагато більше, ніж розглядають заявки на ґранти. За це я їм, а особливо Раді

Директорів, щиро вдячний.

У якості президента, я прийняв участь у більш ніж 80-ти теле-конференціях пов’язаних з роботою Ради

Директорів чи комітетів Фундації, а також різноманітних фондів спеціального призначення, як-от “Фонд

українсько-канадських ветеранів” та “Канадського Фонду для визнання Інтернування під час Першої

Світової Війни”. За останній рік я відвідав 17 міст з 47-ма особистими візитами у справах Фундації.

Я є живим свідком того, що наша організація є єдина у своєму роді українсько-канадська громадська фундація яка служить Канаді. Ніхто не залишається осторонь коли ми, слідуючи своїм масштабним цілям, постійно розвиваємо українсько-канадську громаду.

Окрім успішно виконуваних зобов’язань підтримувати чотири основні напрямки - Мистецтво, Освіта,

Спадщина, Громадський розвиток, ми розуміємо необхідність збільшувати наш основний фонд. Наші

жертводавці та громада в цілому переконається в нашій непохитній відданості українцям у Канаді, коли ми

офіційно запустимо нашу двадцятимільйонну капітал кампанію яку ми назвали Наша Спадщина – наше завтра.

The Shevchenko Foundation is at a crossroads. It is a happy crossroads because we have completed a significant

journey in the history of the Foundation to this point and we have many, many more miles to go to fulfill our

dreams.

I have devoted a significant part of my life to this organization and can say that the Shevchenko Foundation is

“transformative”. There are many organizations that you can donate to that will fulfill a good purpose, whether

they be charitable or philanthropic. But, there are very few times in your life that you can actively participate in

an organization that will literally transform the future of the Ukrainian Canadian community in Canada. The

Shevchenko Foundation is that organization, and the Board of Directors of the Foundation is entrusted to make

this happen through good stewardship of our capital funds for the common good. It is my role as President to

coordinate the skills and abilities of our Board, our staff, our volunteers, and all of our efforts to realize this vision.

You may find it interesting that in addition to the 12 yearly meetings of the Board, two of which are face to face

conferences, our Directors, Executive Director, committees, staff and volunteers engage in significant outreach,

which far surpasses the required review of grants. To them, and most especially to my colleagues on the Board of

Directors, I express my heartfelt gratitude.

As your President I participated in over 80 conference call meetings related to Board and committee activities,

and the activities of various designated funds, including the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Fund and the Canadian

First World War Internment Recognition Fund. This has also involved me in making 47 personal appearances in

17 cities and towns in the past year.

I am a living witness to the reality that the Shevchenko Foundation is the one, truly Ukrainian Canadian community foundation that stands and serves Canada. Through our wide-ranging objectives, no one is left untouched by its constant contribution to the cultural evolution of the Ukrainian Canadian community.

In addition to our mandate to successfully deliver support to the four main pillars of Arts, Education, Heritage,

and Community Development, we know the need exists to expand our capital fund. All donors and the Canadian

community in general will become aware of our steadfast commitment to the Ukrainian Canadian community

with the launch of our 20 million dollar endowment campaign known as Our Legacy, Our Tomorrow.

У вересні 2015 року офіційно розпочинається кампанія Наша Спадщина – наше завтра. Це двадцятимільйонна капітал кампанія Шевченківської Фундації, націлена на сприяння подальшого розвитку квітучої української громади, задля культурного збагачення всієї Канади.

Наша Спадщина – наше завтра по суті є першою кампанією по збору коштів такого масштабу в історії організації. Вона укріпить позицію Фундації як найбільшої установи, що займається розвитком по 4-х напрямках: українсько-канадське мистецтво, спадщина, освіта та суспільство, на користь всіх канадців.

«Наша ціль – суттєво збільшити існуючий капітал Фундації започаткований нашими батьками та прабатьками. Ми маємо забезпечити постійну можливість Фундації здійснювати стратегічні, цільові та тривалі інвестиції на підтримку проектів популяризації та розвитку української культури». Це заява президента Фундації та голови комітету відповідального за кампанію Андрія Гладишевського.

«Завдяки щедрій та своєчасній підтримці від нашої громади, ми впевнені, що досягнемо своєї мети».

Провідники нашої громади з різних провінцій допомогли розробити стратегію кампанії та розвити зв’язки з новими членами, яким не байдужа справа збереження та поширення української культури та спадщини. Серцевиною проекту Наша Спадщина –

наше завтра якраз і є пошук та об’єднання таких людей.

Кампанія Наша Спадщина – наше завтра пропонує потенційним жертводавцям підтримати одну з програм Фундації на національному чи провінційному рівні та назвати її на свою честь чи на честь своєї родини. Завдяки вашій підтримці та підтримці цілої громади, ми всі разом досягнемо мети кампанії. Ми зміцнимо Фундацію задля впевненого майбутнього прийдешніх поколінь українців у Канаді та збереження нашого насліддя.

Capital Campaign Наша Спадщина–наше завтра September 2015 marks the launch of the Shevchenko Foundation’s Our Legacy Our Tomorrow Campaign, a $20 million capital fundraising campaign in support of the advancement of a flourishing Ukrainian community for the enrichment of Canada.

Our Legacy Our Tomorrow is the first major capital fundraising campaign in Shevchenko Foundation’s history and is helping to invigorate the Shevchenko Foundation as Canada’s foremost funding body in support of Ukrainian Canadian Arts, Heritage, Education and Community Development for all Canadians.

“Our goal is to build upon the significant investments made by our parents and grandparents to support the Shevchenko Foundation’s goal of ensuring the continued ability of the Foundation to make strategic, relevant and sustainable investments in support of high-quality projects creating or popularizing Ukrainian culture,” said Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C., President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Chair of the Campaign Cabinet. “Thanks to generous and early support from our community, we are confident in our ability to achieve our goal.”

Community leaders from multiple provinces have helped the Shevchenko Foundation’s Our Legacy Our Tomorrow Campaign develop its campaign strategy and make connections and introductions to new community members who are passionate about their Ukrainian culture and heritage. At the heart of the Our Legacy Our Tomorrow Campaign is the bringing together of people who care about preserving and promoting Ukrainian Canadian cultural heritage.

The Our Legacy Our Tomorrow Campaign offers opportunities for donors to name Pillars, Funds, and Programs at the national and provincial level. Individuals or families can choose to honour their personal or families' legacies through a naming opportunity. With your support, and the support of the entire community, we will achieve the campaign goal and grow the Shevchenko Foundation for the benefit of future generations of Ukrainian Canadians and the preservation of our family’s legacies. The Foundation adheres to investment policies, standards, and procedures that a reasonable and prudent person would apply in respect of a portfolio of investments to avoid undue risk and at the same time obtain a reasonable return.

The Foundation’s investment horizon allows us to take a long-term approach to building our organization. Now in its 52nd year, the Foundation’s Board of Directors and the Investment Committee are committed to ensuring continued growth not only for our children, but also for our grand and great-grand children.

O U T LO O K

A long period of calm gave way to increasing market volatility in the second quarter of 2015. However, for the balance of the year we expect the portfolio’s returns to be driven by countries and companies that can deliver on earnings growth as well as companies that offer a growing dividend yield.

We have always, and especially so in a continuing phase of volatility, emphasized how crucial it is to maintain a long-term orientation and remain focused on the keys to successful investing: diversification, quality, discipline and patience.

July 22, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of the day in which Bill S-21 “An Act to Incorporate the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko” was signed by Governor Georges Phileas Vanier, incorporating the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko.

The Foundation kicked off its year-long celebrations on Canada’s west coast on October 2013, with a gathering of donors and performers for an afternoon of festivities in Nanaimo, BC.

The following spring, in May 9, 2014, the Shevchenko Foundation headed eastward to celebrate its milestone with members of the Ukrainian community in Thunder Bay, ON. In the welcoming atmosphere created by the organizers at the Ukrainian National Home, Shevchenko Foundation Executive Director Lesia Szwaluk spoke to the gathering of approximately 70 people, focusing her remarks on the Foundation’s work in supporting Ukrainian Canadian cultural initiatives, and specifically of the support of projects initiated by cultural groups in Thunder Bay.

Performers included members of the Chaban Ukrainian Dance Group, a musical trio, and a women’s choir that came together specifically for this event to sing songs to the poetry of Taras Shevchenko. In impromptu fashion, all members of the audience sang along with the ensemble, making for a truly memorable moment of community spirit.

The audience in attendance also had the opportunity to view the Foundation’s 50th anniversary video presentation on the history and work of the Shevchenko Foundation.

On June 20, 2014 the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko concluded a coast to coast celebration of its 50th anniversary at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax, NS and with the official launch of its commemorative CD Golden Harvest: A Musical Celebration of Ukrainian Canadiana.

Shevchenko Foundation’s Board of Directors and staff met with some 40 members of Halifax’s Ukrainian community at a special reception at the historic Pier 21 site.

Foundation President Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. welcomed the participants, particularly the many in the audience who recently arrived in Canada. “It’s not by chance that we meet with you here at Pier 21. This is the place where long ago so many of our families, our pra-didy, took their first steps in Canada, much as some of you have”.

Mr. Hladyshevsky spoke about the importance for an organization such as Shevchenko Foundation to connect with smaller and newer communities across Canada and to inform them about the Foundation’s work. “No arts, education, nor heritage project is too large or too small to be considered for support from Shevchenko Foundation. We consider all worthwhile projects”.

Golden Harvest: A Musical Celebration Of Ukrainian CanadianaMany a great project begins as a notion, articulated in its inception with “what if…”

In the case of the Shevchenko Foundation, “what if…” needed to answer the question of how to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a gift of appreciation to all its donors and supporters across the country. The answer came from the heart of Shevchenko Foundation’s purpose – its grantees, and in the wealth of music projects the Foundation has supported over the past 50 years.

Over the course of a year, artists and their music were selected, contacted, and ultimately collected into a three-disc compilation of Ukrainian Canadian music.

The CD, titled Golden Harvest: A Musical Celebration of Ukrainian Canadiana, features 52 selections by artists who represent a vast array of musical genres – from traditional to classical, from polkas to jazz, and beyond.

In his remarks about the Golden Harvest CD project, Foundation President Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. stated, that over its 50 year history the Shevchenko Foundation has valued, and continues to value, the creativity and vision of Ukrainian Canadian artists by financially supporting not only music recordings, but a vast range of arts, educational, community and heritage projects across the country. “These projects serve as our community’s calling card in our desire to promote and develop Ukrainian Canadian cultural heritage, and to advance a flourishing Ukrainian community for the enrichment of Canada”.

The CD was officially launched on June 20, 2014 in Halifax, NS, and distributed by mail to all donors to the Shevchenko Foundation as a gift for their continued support.

Composer Larysa Kuzmenko is completing the tri-lingual, 30 minute Oratorio “Golden Harvest” which will be premiered by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on March 18th, 2016. At this point, symphonies in Ottawa, Saskatoon and Sudbury have expressed sincere interest in having the work performed in the 2016/17 season.

LITERARY ARTS SECTOR “For almost two years artist Ivanka Galadza and I have been working on a graphic novel called Toll House. With the grant we received from the Shevchenko Foundation we were able to devote our full time to this project.

With the format of the story being told as a graphic novel we are hoping to reach a wide range of readers and age groups who might have little or no knowledge about Holodomor, thus advancing Ukrainian literary arts in Canada.

With the grant we were able to complete the full text as well as develop a rough draft of the graphic novel. Once the rough draft is completed, we hope to generate interest to publish our work and share what we regard as an important story.

Our Annual CampaignsOur direct mail campaigns allow us to connect with our donors and to provide a small gift of appreciation to our friends. Your financial donation to the Foundation through these campaigns is vital to our survival and operation.

ANNUAL REPORTThe Annual Report is published and distributed in early fall of each year to keep our donors informed of our activities. Having a visual history of our Foundation, its members and supporters, as well and the many organizations, groups and individuals we support also provides for a lasting legacy to future generations.

CHRISTMAS CARDSDuring the Christmas season, the Shevchenko Foundation mails Christmas cards to each of our donors for their personal use. This gift from the Foundation is our way of expressing appreciation and good will to our supporters. These cards, depicting a Ukrainian Christmas theme, have become an anticipated and welcomed tradition in thousands of homes across Canada.

SHEVCHENKO MONTHEvery March, the Shevchenko Foundation commemorates the work of our namesake, Ukraine’s greatest poet and patriarch - Taras Shevchenko. We do this by distributing over 30,000 bookmarks to children and youth enrolled in Ukrainian language classes, Ukrainian Bilingual schools, Ukrainian dance schools, and youth groups across Canada. Now it its 15th year, this souvenir art reproduction has become a collector’s item for many.

ERIN HAUGEN

Erin Haugen grew up in Edmonton, AB and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) in Calgary, AB from the Alberta College of Art and Design where she majored in ceramics and experimented with numerous other mediums. An experienced painter, Erin has focused on her acrylic work and perfecting her skills writing Ukrainian Easter eggs – pysanky. She has taught numerous classes, workshops and camp sessions covering various forms of art and craft, and has taken part in numerous art shows and sales. After spending four years in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, BC, she currently resides in St. Paul, AB with her husband and her two young sons.

Erin’s recent work explores imagery and themes reminiscent of her Ukrainian heritage while maintaining subtle references to the Holodomor which initially ignited her passion for painting. She has also developed an interest in patterns, which likely stems from her continued dedication to writing pysanky and the opulent embroidery and decoration associated with the Ukrainian culture. Her work can be found in private collections across Canada.

IRYNA KARPENKO

Iryna Karpenko graduated from the National Academy of Fine Art and Architecture, Ukraine and now lives in Edmonton. Her artwork is based on impressions from a mixture of different stories, songs and legends which surround our real and imagined, natural and cultural, historic and prehistoric lives. Some of the subjects derive from Ukrainian mythology and ancient fairytales. Others can

be interpreted as an intricate combination of elements from different epochs and cultures.

Iryna teaches art and Ukrainian Folk Art, specializing in the techniques of icon painting on glass and Ukrainian paper cut-out art, vytynanky.


Ivan T. Grbešić, LLB serves as Chair of the CFWWIRF Endowment Council.

Canadian First World War Internment Recognition FundBackground and Overview of 2014-2015 The Fund, its Objectives, and the Endowment Council

THE FUNDFollowing several months of negotiations between the Federal Government of Canada and the Ukrainian Canadian community, as represented by the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association (UCCLA), the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko (UCFTS), and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), a $10 million endowment known as the “Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund” (CFWWIRF) was established to commemorate and educate Canadians about Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914 to 1920.

The agreed terms of the endowment were confirmed during a signing ceremony held on May 9, 2008 at the Stanley Barracks in Toronto, Ontario. At which time, the Federal Government was represented by Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration, and Multiculturalism, and the Ukrainian Canadian community was represented by Mr. Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C. (UCFTS), Mr. Paul Grod (UCC), and Dr. Lubomyr Luciuk (UCCLA).

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE FUNDThe CFWWIRF is designated for the support of projects to commemorate and recognize the experiences of ethno-cultural communities affected by the First World War Internment. Only the interest earned on the $10 million is used to fulfill the objective of the Fund.

The Endowment CouncilThe work of the CFWWIRF is overseen by the Endowment Council, which is comprised of seven members and one observer, including: one representative (a) appointed by each of the following three Ukrainian Canadian organizations UCFTS, UCCLA, and UCC; (b) named or selected from each of three organizations representing ethno-cultural communities (other than the Ukrainian Canadian community) affected by the First World War Internment; and (c) appointed by the UCFTS as Chair of the Endowment Council; in addition to (d) an observer (non-voting position) selected to represent the perspective of internee descendants.

THE MEMBERS OF THE ENDOWMENT COUNCIL (2014-2015)

On June 4, 2014, Saskatchewan Friends of the Shevchenko Foundation - Saskatoon Chapter (SFSF-SC) sponsored their 17th annual Fundraising and Donor Appreciation Event in Saskatoon to benefit the Foundation.

At the venue of the Cathedral of the Holy Family, guests were warmly greeted by Evelyn Wojcichowsky, Sonia Boyko, Orysia Shrubsole and accomplished musicians Marko Baran, Matt Paslawski, Stepan Kodak and Jordan Welbourne. MC Nissa Baran guided the official program by honouring past and present donors, introducing special guests and presenting energetic entertainers— Lastiwka Ukrainian Orthodox Choir & Orchestra and dancers, Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble, and Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble. These leading and internationally renowned entertainers generously volunteered their talents for this event and have been previous recipients of Foundation support.

SFSF-SC Committee Chair Sonia Mysak welcomed all in attendance, commending the Committee members for their efforts and presenting the commemorative displays. Sonia spoke passionately about the Shevchenko Foundation and its relevance to the Ukrainian community of Saskatoon. Sonia also welcomed Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C., President of the Foundation, and Lesia Szwaluk, Executive Director.

In his remarks Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. spoke of the yearlong 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Foundation and the events and programmes held throughout the country. He was very pleased to make a symbolic presentation to Professor Bohdan Kordan, Founding Director of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage. This presentation was the final installment of an important Heritage Grant awarded to the Prairie Centre from the Shevchenko Foundation.

He also inducted a new member to the Kobzar Fellowship which recognizes and honours those who have made provision for the Foundation through a bequest or other deferred gift.

Rose Wasylenka was welcomed as the newest member of the Kobzar Fellowship. Born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, her travels took her to Uranium City, Saskatchewan where she married her husband Mike Wasylenka and raised their family. Rose

was very active in the community and was elected Mayor of Uranium City. She held this position for several terms and was the last official Mayor of this community. Her strong belief in honesty, frankness, fairness and justice led to her title as the “Feisty Mayor”. Since 1982, Rose and her family have resided in Saskatoon. She is an active member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, an active member of the St. George’s UCWLC and has served as branch vice-president. Rose has been an active member of the UCC-Saskatoon Branch in many different positions. Remaining active in many aspects of the Ukrainian community is evidence of Rose’s deep pride in her Ukrainian heritage. Rose has three children and three grandchildren. The SFSF-SC is very proud that Rose has chosen to be our newest Kobzar Fellowship inductee.

The annual SFSF-SC events have raised more than $110,000.00 for the capital fund of the Shevchenko Foundation over the years. The 2014 Event raised over $12,000.00 in income from all sources. A special historical video directed by Saskatoon’s own Ryan Boyko commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Shevchenko Foundation was presented to convey the importance of donations to the Foundation.

The Endowment Council’s WorkAs Chair of the Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund (CFWWIRF), I am pleased to present our seventh Annual Report and a report on the ongoing grants of the Endowment Council.

Over this last fiscal year (2014-2015), we commemorated the centennial of Canada’s first national internment operations in over 100 locations across Canada on August 22nd. We held a total of ten formal meetings of the Endowment Council (via conference call) and one face to face meeting, as a result of which twenty-two grants were approved, totaling $333,412.70. Since the inception of the CFWWIRF, the Endowment Council has awarded $1,512,320 in grants, with another $344,083 having been approved for disbursement during the balance of 2015 and 2016. The approved grants cover historical exhibits, books and publications, commemorative events, internee cemeteries, films, research projects, and national educational curriculum strategies.

FOURTEEN GRANT PROJECTS CAME TO FRUIT ION DURING 2014-2015, INCLUDING IN THE FOLLOWING LOCALES ACROSS THE COUNTRY:

• British Columbia: - Vancouver - Simon Fraser University MA student, Sarah Beaulieu, completed her thesis, Remembering the Forgotten, Archaeology at the Morrissey WW1 Internment Camp; and Sandra Semchuk’s book project, The Stories Were Not Told manuscript was completed;

- Vernon – the Vernon & District Family History Society located the graves of 11 men who died in the Vernon Internment Camp and was provided with funding to construct new headstones and a monument in their memory;

- Cranbrook - Tipi Mountain Eco-Cultural Services Ltd. provided an archaeological Report on the Morrissey Historic Cemetery using Ground Penetrating Radar;

• Alberta – the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation was provided with a grant for Project CTO, the unveiling of over 100 plaques across Canada on August 22nd; Beverley DeSantis completed her thesis, Remembering Canadian World War I Internment: Challenges and Alternatives to Remembrance at Visited Heritage Sites;

• Saskatchewan - Dr. Bohdan Kordan completed his scholarly study on internment and the enemy alien experience in Canada during the Great War;

• Winnipeg, Manitoba – Danny Schur completed a full-length feature film screenplay script entitled, The Braiders;

• Ontario - the Plast Ukrainian Youth Association, Toronto Branch visited the Fort Henry Internment Exhibit; Publicist, Kim Therriault promoted the 100 Plaques initiative by creating various social media platforms; Ontario Library Association provided 23 internment presentations to elementary schools by award winning author and internee descendant, Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch; and sculptor John Boxtel created a statue for the Parks Canada Internment Exhibit at Cave & Basin National Historic Site, Banff, Alberta to replace the existing mannequin, providing a symbol of internee labour; and

• Québec - Les Éditions du Quartz republished Spirit Lake, 1915 - 1917, a book that was originally published in 1998: and Camp Spirit Lake Corporation Internment Interpretive Centre in La Ferme, near Amos completed its five year project, which is the result of the largest grant approved and funded by the Endowment Council to date.

ONGOING PROJECTS ACROSS CANADA INCLUDE:

• British Columbia - the Critical Thinking Consortium is working on completing its five year National Educational Project to embed WWI Internment in curriculum resources across Canada;

• Saskatchewan – the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Saskatchewan Provincial Council will be placing a commemorative plaque at the Eaton Internment Camp site;

• Manitoba - Rev. Dr. Athanasius McVay’s research project, which is expected to offer a fresh analysis of the actions of Bishop Nykyta Budka and the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in the context of the First World War, and in particular, the Internment of Ukrainians in Canada; and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Manitoba Provincial Council will be unveiling a monument at the Manitoba Legislative grounds on October 28, 2015 on National Internment Commemoration Day in Winnipeg; and

• Ontario - two research projects are in progress: Frank Jankac is investigating the Croatian-Canadian internment experience, and Dr. Marinel Mandres delves into the internment of ethnic Serbs and Romanians in Canada during the Great War, 1914 to 1920; Ryan Boyko’s film project, “Enemy Aliens” is progressing towards the production; and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress National continues to promote the picture postage commemorative stamp that was unveiled by Senator Andreychuk and the Hon. Jason Kenney in March of 2014.

The Endowment Council is also working on a new project to create an online collection of WW1 Internment related newspaper articles.

In this Report, we provide an overview of the diverse grant projects that add to building the Canadian narrative to a tragic and unknown chapter in our Canadian history.

Spirit Lake Internment Interpretative Centre In Quebec Uniquely located on the site of the original internment grounds, the Spirit Lake Internment Interpretative Centre is the largest internment museum in Canada, open all year to the public. Thanks to a major grant from the CFWWIRF and now in its fifth year of operation, the Centre established and developed an important educational program. Furthering knowledge of the internment story and early settlement to Canada is at the core of the Centre’s continued success and its “raison d’être.”

The Centre’s volunteer interpreter-guide Eric Larose, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology and History, conducts numerous workshops for students. This year over seven classes and over 1,300 students visited the Centre. Larose has developed strong links with local school boards and schools in both English and French sectors. The Centre’s educational outreach program continues to expand, igniting interest in the study of the past and developing a collective regional memory of its overall history.

The Centre received its second major award in recognition for its outstanding contribution toward community enrichment and its active participation in furthering awareness of Quebec’s diverse heritage from the Quebec organization “Neighbours.” The “Neighbours” regional Association of Rouyn-Noranda serves the English-speaking community in Quebec and is a partner with

Quebec Community Groups Network (QCGN) and Canadian Heritage. Through QCGN, it is linked with 41 English language community organizations across Quebec. This award to Spirit Lake Centre garnered national media coverage.

Ontario Library AssociationWWI INTERNMENT PRESENTATIONS BY MARSHA FORCHUK SKRYPUCH

As the umbrella organization for libraries in Ontario, The Ontario Library Association members include school library professionals (elementary, secondary and post-secondary) as well as children’s and youth librarians in public libraries. As this is the 100th anniversary of WWI and also the 100th anniversary of the first Canadian internment operations of “enemy aliens,” we offered a presentation series specifically geared towards children and young adults. Marsha Skrypuch, a Canadian children’s author, has written three books on this topic all geared towards children and youth. We offered 20 one-hour presentations by Marsha Skrypuch to schools and libraries across the province during the school year of 2014-2015. We have worked closely with Skrypuch on other projects, and she is well-respected in the library community and is known for her stellar presentations. She is an internee descendent as well as the author of three books on the topic – Silver Threads, Dear Canada Diary Prisoners In A Promised Land, and Dance of the Banished. She is also a trained librarian herself, which made her the ideal candidate for this reading series.

Marsha is a well-known speaker in Ontario schools and libraries, having given presentations on a variety of topics. Our members jumped at the chance to book her for this special commemorative series!

2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Spirit Lake internment camp (1915-1917). The Centre has many commemorative anniversary events planned. These commemorative activities include a re-enactment of the first internees arriving at Spirit Lake through a partnership with VIA Rail, highlighting the role of the railway in the function of the internment camp 100 years ago. As well, a reunion of the Centre’s many volunteers from 1998 that helped Spirit Lake Centre develop is planned during this centennial commemoration.

Spirit Lake, 600 km north of Montreal, was the second largest of the 24 internment sites. Over 1,200 people were unjustly interned, many from the Montreal area. The majority of the Spirit Lake internees were Ukrainians. Today, descendants of Spirit Lake internees live across Canada.

Over 20,000 Visitors to the Centre come from all over Quebec, Canada, and Europe. Spirit Lake Centre has developed partners with many community organizations such as the Historical Societies in Amos, Rouyn-Noranda, and others in the region, all assisting in further developing the Centre’s activities. Other partners include The Réseau Muséal de l’Abitbi-Témiscamingue (Museum Network of Abitibi-Témiscamingue), Association touristique régional de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue (Regional Tourism Association of Abitbi-Témiscamingue), and the Conseil de la

culture de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue (Cultural Council of Abitibi-Témiscamingue).

Internment artifacts on loan from Camp Spirit Lake’s museum will be displayed at Pointe-à-Callière, Museum of Archeology and History in Montreal, thus expanding the internment story to reach those unable to travel to the Abitibi region of Quebec.

The nine-member volunteer board of directors of Camp Spirit Lake Corporation, chaired by James Slobodian, oversees the daily operation of Spirit Lake Centre’s museum and program. Their passion and commitment ensures that the internment story is passed onto future generations. Further information see:

The Critical Thinking Consortium (TC2), a non-profit educational group with extensive experience across Canada, has been working with the CFWWIRF since April 2011 to develop and implement a five-year national plan to educate young people and educators about Canada’s first national internment operations. The primary goal is to embed the topic of World War I internment into the minds and hearts of Canadians using a diverse array of educational programs, resources and professional development opportunities. During the current year, TC2 has achieved significant success in fulfilling its mandate in each of the following five program strands.

CUSTOMIZED LESSON PL ANS TC2 offers its services to individuals (teachers, artists, film makers, independent scholars) and organizations (museums, archives, historical and cultural associations, community groups) across Canada to develop lesson plans that engage students in thinking critically about internment related issues. These lessons are posted online or made available in print form.

During the current period, TC2 produced the proposed deliverables of four new lesson plans. These lessons are designed to help teachers use the two historical thinking videos on World War I internment produced for this project. Since the project began, TC2 has produced 18 lesson plans, which is one more than the program target of 17 lesson plans.

SETS OF H ISTORICAL DOCUMENTSNo new resources were produced in this category during the reporting period. TC2 researchers had previously met their deliverables target for the project by assembling nine sets (7 in English and 2 in French) of carefully selected historical photographs, documents, and diaries on various internment-related issues.

Elementary and secondary teachers can access these sets of primary sources through the TC2 website. During the current year, the document sets were viewed 5,899 times. Since August 30, 2012 the WWI internment document sets have been viewed a total of 21,868 times.

INCLUSION IN PUBLISHED RESOURCESOne of the most effective and efficient ways of gaining broad exposure for WWI internment issues is to insert the topic into published resources. TC2 has adapted the lesson plans and sets of historical documents it develops for WWI internment into published resources developed by TC2 and by other publishers and educational groups. For example, the two videos developed earlier in the projects have been mounted or linked on several websites; they have been viewed over 4,500 times through the TC2 website.

During this period TC2 developed, printed and released 900 copies of the 161-page Pivotal Voices publication, Recognizing an Historic Injustice: Canada’s First National Internment Operations, 1914-1920. This publication draws together nine lesson plans produced through this project into an attractive publication intended for secondary Social Studies and History teachers. A second edition of the publication will be issued in September 2015.

As part of a related project with the Heritage Fairs project, TC2 developed and mounted two lesson plans on historical thinking tools using Ukrainian immigration (Impact timeline) and World War I Internment (Reading around a document) as themes. These are available on the TC2 website and through the BC Heritage Fairs Society website.

OUTREACH TO PRE-SERVICE AND IN-SERVICE TEACHERSTC2 offers workshops, conference sessions, and pre-service teacher presentations in order to build teacher awareness of the topic of WWI internment and of the resources developed as part of the project. During the past year, TC2 delivered presentations to 532 teachers in 9 sessions across five provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Since beginning the project, TC2 has presented to a total of 1,769 teachers, which is just slightly below the targeted total of 1,855 teachers.

MOBIL IZE STUDENTS AS ADVOCATES FOR REMEMBRANCE AND PREVENTIONThe final strand of the educational program is geared towards involving youth and a variety of community and educational groups in developing attitudes and commitments that aim to increase the likelihood that legally- and socially-sanctioned injustices such as the WWI internment are not forgotten and are less likely to happen again. To this end, TC2 has entered into a joint agreement with the Vancouver School Board and the BC Heritage Fairs Society to enrich the appeal and educational value of Heritage Fairs. First World War Interment issues have been embedded in two lessons plans to support historical thinking and will soon be featured in two PowerPoint presentations to support teacher use of these lessons. These materials are featured in the workshops to be offered to teachers through this project.

On August 22, 2014, a famous event took place recalling an infamous event that occurred a century earlier: more than 100 bilingual historical plaques were unveiled nationwide at 11:00am local time, from Amherst, Nova Scotia to Nanaimo, British Columbia.

The plaques commemorated the men, women, and children interned during Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914-1920. At the time of the internment, more than 8,500 Canadians of east European descent--among them Ukrainians, Alevi Kurds, Armenians, Bulgarians, Croatians, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Italians, Jews, Ottoman Turks, Polish, Romanians,

Russians, Serbians, Slovaks, and Slovenes, of which most were Ukrainians and most were civilians--were interned and branded “enemy aliens.” Among the internees were Canadians stripped of their citizenship. Some had any land they owned confiscated. Many of the internees were forced to work in labour camps throughout Canada.

On September 30, 2011, at its Annual General Meeting, the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation (UCCLF) first conceived of the idea of commemorating the centennial of Canada’s first national internment operations by placing interpretive panels at various locations across Canada. In developing the idea, the UCCLF visualized the panels being unveiled on the same date and at the same local time, so as to create a cascade of unveilings from coast to coast. That idea appropriately came to be known as Project “CTO,” meaning “one hundred” in Ukrainian.

As a result, the UCCLF had the bilingual historical plaques produced and delivered to sites across the country. Among the sites were churches, cultural centres, regional museums and other public venues. Communities and venues that received a plaque each hosted a local unveiling.

In addition to the financial backing of the UCCLF, Project “CTO” was made possible by a grant from the Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund.

Among those issuing statements in relation to Project “CTO” were The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada; numerous Members of Parliament; various provincial Premiers and local Mayors; and ecclesiastical leaders from across Canada and overseas.

UCCLF Chair, Andriy Harasymiw, recapped Project “CTO” as follows: “The Project was unprecedented, yet it was a resounding success. It received coverage by the major Canadian national media outlets. It also received international attention. Most importantly, it fulfilled its objectives: first, commemorating those lives forever affected by, and some indeed lost as a result of, Canada’s first national internment operations, and second, educating Canadians about a dark and unknown chapter in Canadian history. I am grateful to the various communities who unveiled the commemorative plaques, and I wish to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of the Project Lead, Dr Lubomyr Luciuk, and the significant financial support of the Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund.”

Project “CTO” indeed accomplished that which it set out to do: honouring the memory of the victims of Canada’s first national internment operations while educating Canadians on the subject. In contributing to the success Project, the UCCLF and the Endowment Council each worked within their respective mandates. The Project provides a benchmark for further initiatives in acknowledging, commemorating and educating on the matter of Canada’s first national internment operations.

UCCLF has been involved in student essay and opinion-editorial writing competitions, book releases and distribution, and internment site commemorative plaque placement. Among UCCLF’s current major projects is CTO – the One Hundred Plaques Across Canada Initiative. UCCLF is also a lead sponsor of Enemy Aliens, an internment-themed feature film being produced by Ukrainian Canadian filmmaker Ryan Boyko. Enemy Aliens is set for release in 2017.

The following is a transcript of the remarks made by Lawrna Myers, Cemetery Committee Chair at the Vernon Internee Cemetery Commemoration Ceremony.

May 23, 2015: “On this date ninety-eight years ago, a different group of people stood at this very spot burying the body of Stipan Šapina. He was a coal miner and labourer who came to this country in 1913. After World War I erupted, immigrants from Eastern European countries were gathered into central locations known as internment camps. Stipan was interned along with his brother Nick and hundreds more in the Vernon Camp. It was here that he contracted tubercular meningitis and passed away on May 21, 1917 at the age of 23.

It is due to Stipan that we are here today honoring the eleven men who died in this camp. Last year while working on a project for The War Graves Photographic Project photographing markers for those who died during the world war conflicts I noted that his marker had been destroyed and contacted Andrea Malysh, program manager of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund (CFWWIRF) to determine what, if anything could be done. This resulted in a grant for the Vernon & District Family History Society from the Endowment Council of the CFWWIRF to have new markers and a monument installed in their memory.

“The Vernon Internment Camp was situated at what is now Macdonald Park, a playground today where children’s laughter is heard. In the spring of 1902, a three-story jail was built on the site. It was used until June of 1904. At that time, the Provincial Insane Asylum in New Westminster was overcrowded and they sent patients from that facility to Vernon. In early September of 1913 patients were moved to a new facility called “Essondale” A year later, on September 18, 1914 the Vernon Internment Camp opened. The camp closed on February 20, 1920.

“Ten additional men died in the camp.

“Jure Vukorepa, a labourer who was also interned at the Mara Lake Internment Camp, died on

August 30, 1916 at the age of 30 from haemorrhagic dysentery.

“Mile Hećimović, a miner from Bukovac, died on February 17, 1917 from pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 31.

“Ivan Jugo was 30 years old when he passed away from tuberculosis of the intestines on March 12, 1917.

“Karl Keck was a hotel night clerk and longshoreman from Vancouver. He died on June 18, 1917 from valve disease of the heart at the age of 44.

“Wilhelm Heinrich Eduard Wolter died from syncope due to chronic pericarditis and myocarditis on May 6, 1918 at age 59. Wilhelm was a hairdresser from Kamloops. He left a wife in England.

“Samuel Vulović, arrived at Philadelphia in 1905 and spent time mining in Dawson City and Alaska before being interned. He died at the age of 38 on December 2, 1918 after suffering a hemorrhage from a gastric ulcer.

“Bernard Heiny also died December 2, 1918 at age 34; he developed pneumonia following influenza in the Spanish Influenza outbreak. He arrived in Canada in 1913. Bernard’s wife, Louisa died in 1916 in Victoria. His death left their two sons orphaned.

“Wasyl Shapka, a labourer was also a victim of the Spanish Flu; he contracted

double pneumonia after influenza and died on December 10, 1918 at the age of 26.

“Leo Mueller began an argument with a fellow prisoner following an altercation first between the two men’s sons and then their wives. Leo rammed his head into the stomach of the man, fracturing his neck in the process. He lived for three days before passing away on July 12, 1919.

“Timoti Korejczuk who suffered from syncope, died on September 15, 1919, only four days after he arrived at the camp. He was a bookkeeper from Vegreville, Alberta.

“The remains of the four German men were removed in the 1970s by the German War Graves Commission who disinterred all German internee and POW remains across Canada and moved them to

the Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario.

“The crime these men were interned for was simply being born in the wrong country. Like most immigrants, they were coming to Canada seeking a better life than the one they left behind.”

It is important for a country, for a nation like Canada to certainly know about its glorious achievements but also to know where its ideals failed, in order to keep them from happening again.

In closing I leave you with this quote, “Let us break this self-damaging silence and own our own history. If we do not, estrangement from our past will be absorbed and driven deeper, surfacing as a fragmentation in ourselves and coming generations.”

Shevchenko Foundation Designated FundsA designated Fund represents a sum of money set aside within the Shevchenko Foundation for a specific or designated purpose. The annual income earned from the investing of the capital is disbursed in accordance with the instructions of the donor. Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Fund

The Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Fund (UCVF) was created to hallow the World I and World War II veterans and for defending the cause of a democratic, independent Ukrainian state. The members unanimously established a nine person Board of Advisors, whose mandate is to review and award grants to individuals and/or organizations who further research, studies, and publications in relation to past, present, and future Ukrainian Canadian Veterans and their history.

In 2014-2015 the UCVF awarded to projects all of which have shown excellent results in documenting these important stories, in commemorating our Ukrainian veterans, and in educating our community about our unique history.

Slawko John Kindrachuk – Kobzar Fellow

Slawko was born August 28, 1941 near Whitkow, SK. He came to Saskatoon, living at Mohyla Institute, to attend High School and later Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. He became a Journeyman Auto Mechanic, working at Victory Motors for a few years before he and his wife Jean, along with their children Darren and Donni, would move to Saskatoon. He received a teacher’s College Certificate and later would complete a Bachelor of Education Degree. He taught at Mount Royal Collegiate, Walter Murray Collegiate, and finished his teaching career at Victoria Elementary School where he piloted and designed a new Industrial Arts Program for the public school system. He received the Hilroy Fellowship (Award) for Innovation in Education. In 1995 he was named Teacher of the Year, retiring in 1996.

In Slawko and Jean’s early married years they actively served together on many committees and executives within the Ukrainian community. They were founding contributors to Vesna Festival, organizing members of the Karpaty Pavilion for Folkfest and were founding members of the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church Planning and Building Committee. They redesigned their home after a fire in 1971, planned and constructed a cabin at Murray Lake, designed and built a motor home as well as established a well-known sewing business. Jean was involved in a fatal car accident in 1989.

In 2001 Slawko met Carol through a shared interest in ballroom dancing. Later he recruited Carol to serve as Volunteer Coordinator at Ukrainian Day in The Park, of which Slawko was Chairperson. On November 20, 2009 they were married at All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the chandelier which Slawko had built during the construction of the church. Now married, the family extended to include Carol’s children Sean, Tiffany, and D’Arcee. Once again he could share his creative endeavours and his love for cooking, reading, gardening and entertaining with the many family and friends whom they loved. Together they were members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, and the Kobzar Fellowship of the Shevchenko Foundation.

As a long-time student of organizational behaviour and development, Slawko designed a business, SJK Consulting, to help small businesses and not for profit organizations reach their goals in marketing, problem solving in change, conflict and communication. His main focus had always been the Ukrainian Canadian community which he loved, served and promoted. His role as President of UCC-SB and UCC-SPC (Ukrainian Canadian Congress) for the last 4 years complimented his ability to contribute to his heritage.

In July of 2011 a heart ailment required Slawko to be admitted to the Royal University Hospital for surgical procedures. Shortly after, Slawko was diagnosed with cancer and underwent liver surgery in 2012 followed by chemotherapy. Slawko, with the loving support of Carol applied all of his abilities to research and better understand his condition, in a search to improve and extend his life. His passion and determination to find both greater health and time with Carol, family and the community he loved ended on March 18, 2015.

Directed DonationsThe Shevchenko Foundation funds many worthwhile projects in the field of the arts, education, heritage, and community development. Under Foundation policy grant recipients can receive only up to 50% of the total cost of their project from the Shevchenko Foundation. To meet the shortfall in projects costs grant recipients sometimes undertake projects fundraising campaigns. The Shevchenko Foundation is committed to assist grant recipients to facilitate such project fundraising campaigns via our Directed Donations program. Funds received by the Foundation in this manner will be differentiated from the Shevchenko Foundation’s own funds and, hence, will not be accrued to the Capital Fund of the Foundation. In summary, directed donations are defined as donations made to the Shevchenko Foundation of behalf of a Shevchenko Foundation grant recipient by an individual or group for a specific active project that has already received funding support from the Foundation.

EL IZABETH BOYKO

Born to Lena and Michael Balysky on June 23, 1932, Elizabeth learned that you had to find your place in life and work hard to maintain it. This was a lesson learned being one of 11 siblings. Elizabeth was born and raised on a farm near Danbury, SK. She was educated in a one room school house two miles from their farm uphill both ways. Upon leaving home she worked at several jobs, her first one at age 16 as a waitress in Swan River, Manitoba. This led her on a journey, because she was not satisfied with that station in life.

She married her soul mate Pete Boyko on July 12, 1951. After a brief time farming, a new adventure awaited her and Pete. They loaded up their half ton truck and all their worldly possessions, including their young son Adrian, and headed for the Great White North –Sheridan, MB. Elizabeth and Pete then made their way to The Pas, MB, where son Garry was born. Once the boys went to school, so did Elizabeth! She studied for three years to get her Food Service Supervisors Certificate, which led to her different food management positions with hospitals in The Pas and Winnipeg.

As a young woman with a young family, Elizabeth felt that she had to volunteer and give back something to the community. She joined the Royal Canadian Legion and served with them for several years. Elizabeth was also dedicated to her profession, church and the Women’s Association. She always cared about the benefit she could leave with others. And mostly, she loved her family and was a great mentor to them.

After Pete passed away, Elizabeth moved to Saskatoon, where she enjoyed the last number of her years.

Elizabeth Boyko passed away on October 17, 2014. Left to cherish her memory are her sisters Ann Zubko of Preeceville, SK and Jenni Folwark of Edmonton, AB. Sons Adrian (Sonia) of Saskatoon, SK, Garry (Helene) of Rimby, AB. Grandchildren Kathryn (Ken) Manweiler of Red Deer, AB, Tara Dovgyy of Martensville, SK, Ryan (Diana) Boyko of Toronto, ON, Alexander (Rhiannon) Boyko of Winnipeg, MB, Teresa Turko of Calgary, AB. Great-grandchildren Nathaniel, Ethan and Julia Boyko, Nykola and Natalia Dovgyy, Haiden and Azaria Murray, Ben and Payton Turko, Michaela, Greyden and Logan Manweiler.

Elizabeth will be greatly missed, because of her strong, caring and compassionate style. She had a dry, mischievous sense of humour and a true love and devotion to family.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Jean Karakola February 5, 1922 – December 26, 2012

Jean and Lily, together with their brother, Michael, were born to Ukrainian parents living in the Transcona area of Winnipeg in the 1920’s. Both their mother, Maria Andrusyshyn, and their father, John Karakola, were born in the village of Holoskovichi, near Lviv, and both immigrated to Canada as young children of pioneer parents.

Jean, Lily, and Michael grew up in a strong Ukrainian family. They all eventually attended Norquay School and St. John’s Technical High School. Both Jean and Lily worked as executive assistants; Jean for the Workers Compensation Board.

Jean and Lily were independent and strong-willed women, who looked after themselves nearly until the time of their deaths.

Lily and Jean were predeceased by their parents, John and Maria Karakola, and by their brother, Michael Karakola. They are survived by their niece, Loretta Melnychuk.

They determined to leave a portion of their estate to the Shevchenko Foundation in a Designated Fund in support of the Visual Arts Program of the Arts Pillar.

The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not a substitute for reading the audited financial statements noted above.

1. BASIS OF PREPARATIONThe summarized financial statements have been prepared from the audited financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2015 on the following basis:(a) The summarized financial statements include the complete statement of financial position, statement of operations and changes in net

assets, schedules of internally restricted designated funds, and expenses.The complete financial statements, including notes to the financial statements and the independent auditors’ report are available upon request by contacting the Foundation’s office.


1959 Permission is given to place a monument to Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s national poet, on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature. $175,000 is raised for this project.1961 Canada’s Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker, unveils the Taras Shevchenko monument in Winnipeg, MB on the 100th anniversary of Shevchenko’s death. A surplus of $30,000 is invested into an endowment fund. The fund is dedicated to the preservation and development of Ukrainian culture in Canada and becomes known as the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko.1962 Senators John Hnatyshyn, William Wall, Paul Yuzyk and Nicholas Mandziuk, MP for Marquette work to incorporate the Foundation as a national body.1963 The Act of Parliament is signed by the Governor General Georges-Philéas Vanier on July 22, 1963. 1964 The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) appoints the first board with Dr. Isydore Hlynka as President. The first grant of $400 is disbursed.1965 The first large grant of $5,000 is awarded to UCC for the publication of 3 books: The Ukrainian Poets 1189-1962, and The Poetical Works of Taras Shevchenko both translated by Andrusyshen and Kirkconnell, and Taras Shevchenko the Artist by Keywan.1967 The Shevchenko Foundation receives charitable status.1968 The first largest single grant of $5,000 is made in support of the development of audio-visual methodology and materials for teaching Ukrainian language in public schools. 1969 A donation of $10,000 from the Ukrainian Literary Society of T. Shevchenko, Kenora, ON is received.1971 The Foundation is accepted as a member organization of the UCC. The President of the Foundation becomes a member of the UCC Board of Directors.

1978 The Foundation reaches its first one million dollars.1981 The Foundation reaches $1.5 million dollars.1987 The Foundation receives its first designated fund from Stefan and Maria Yankowski of Winnipeg MB.1989 The Foundation purchases one-half interest in the land and building from UCC located at 456 Main St in Winnipeg MB where the offices of the Foundation are located.1990 The Foundation disburses over $200,000 in grants.1994 The Board of Directors appoint an Investment Committee with Wally Shoemay as Chairperson. The first meeting of the Investment Committee is held.1995 The Foundation receives its’ first insurance policy gift.1997 President Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C., initiates the Kobzar Fellowship Program.1998 The first 11 members of the Kobzar Fellowship are inducted at a launch ceremony in Saskatoon. 2001 The Foundation launches its official website.2002 The first Shevchenko bilingual Bookmark “Educate Yourselves, my Brethren” is issued.2003 The first KobzarTM Literary Award is announced.2004 The Avramenko exhibit is unveiled at the UCC Congress held in Winnipeg. The Walter Halchuk Memorial Book Award is established.

2005 Shevchenko Foundation office moves to a new home at 202 - 952 Main St in Winnipeg. Ben Wasylyshen creates a unique window art panel, The Foundation Window.The John Syrnick Journalism Award is launched and presented to Mark MacKinnon of the Globe & Mail for his coverage of the Orange Revolution.

2006 The first KobzarTM Literary Award of $25,000 is presented to Danny Schur for STRIKE! The Musical and to Laura Langston for Lesia’s Dream.

Anne Smigel is the first donor to the KobzarTM Literary Award designated fund with a donation of $25,000.

The KobzarTM Literary Award is announced and the Kobzar Writer’s Scholarship at the Humber School for Writers is established.

2007 The first recipient of the Kobzar Writer’s Scholarship at the Humber School for Writers is Helen Pretulak. Victor Malarek receives the John Syrnick Award for Journalism.2008 The Government of Canada grants $10 million to the Foundation to establish the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund. The winner of the KobzarTM Literary Award is Janice Kulyk Keefer The Ladies’ Lending Library and shortlisted are Marusya Boci-urkiw for Comfort Food for Break-ups: The Memoir of a Hungry Girl; Roman Paul Fodchuk for Zhorna: Material Culture of the Ukrainian Pioneers and Lisa Grekul for Leav-ing Shadows: Literature in English by Canada’s Ukrainians.

2009 The first Night of Taras Fundraiser is held in Winnipeg MB to promote the KobzarTM Literary Award and to build the KobzarTM Literary Award Designated Fund. Winnipeg Free Press receives the John Syrnick Award for Journalism for their coverage on the Holodomor.2010 The Foundation goes on-line with credit card donations and a Facebook page. KobzarTM Literary Award is presented to Randall Maggs for Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems. Shortlisted are Elizabeth Bachinsky’s God of Missed Connection; Paul Laverdure’s Redemption and Ritual: the Eastern - Rite Redemptorists of North America, 1906-2006 and Murray Andrew Pura’s Zo. 2011 The Foundation celebrates its 10th anniversary for the bookmark campaign by distributing over 32,000 bookmarks to Ukrainian Canadian youth across Canada.

Frederick Laval from the La Presse receives the John Syrnick Award for Journalism.

2012 KobzarTM Literary Award is presented to Shandi Mitchell for Under this Unbroken Sky. Shortlisted are Larissa Andrusyshyn’s Mammoth; Myrna Kostash’s Prodigal Daughter: A Journey to Byzantium; Myroslav Shkandrij’s Jews in Ukrainian Literature: Representation and Identity and Rhea Tregebov’s The Knife Sharpener’s Bell.

2013 The Board of Directors approves a new logo for the Foundation. The Globe and Mail articles written by Brian Bonner, Hon. Derek Fraser, John Doyle and John Stackhouse receive the John Syrnick Award for Journalism.2014 KobzarTM Literary Award is presented to Diane Flacks, playwright, in collaboration with Andrey Tarasiuk and Luba Goy for the play Luba, Simply Luba. Shortlisted are Erin Moure’s The Unmemntioable, Michael Mucz’s Baba’s Kitchen, Barbara Sapergia’s Blood and Salt, and Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch for Making Bombs for Hitler.

2015 Shevchenko Foundation celebrates its 50th anniversary in Nanaimo, BC, Thunder Bay, ON, Halifax, NS, and other centres in Canada. As an anniversary project, Shevchenko Foundation releases a 3-disc compilation CD – Golden Harvest: A Musical Celebration of Ukrainian Canadiana, featuring songs and music by artists who had received funding from the Foundation over the years.

2007 Першим лауреатом письменницької премії Кобзаря стає Гелен Претулак. Премії журналістики ім. І. Сирника отримує Віктор Маларик.2008 Уряд Канади виділяє $10 мільйонів для започаткування Канадського Фонду для Визнання Інтернування під час Першої Світової Війни. 2010 Фундація починає приймати онлайн пожертви і створює Фейсбук сторінку.
