Founded in 1963, the Shevchenko Foundation continues to be the leader in the advancement of Canada’s Ukrainian community for generations to come, earning the trust and partnership of the community it serves.

This past year the Shevchenko Foundation has advanced its efforts on many fronts, including a gain of steady growth in its capital campaign, the launch of a new initiative for young people, and the celebration of Ukrainian Canadian literature.

The Our Legacy Our Tomorrow capital campaign was launched in 2015 to increase the Foundation’s ability to provide greater funding assistance to those who are at the forefront of developing our community and cultural legacy. We are very pleased that the campaign has now grown to $15.8 million in pledged donations. As it grows, so does the ability to provide more generous grants to more artists and more organizations. Over 40% of the grants allocated in the past year were funded from interest derived directly from the Our Legacy Our Tomorrow capital campaign.

The Board of Directors of the Shevchenko Foundation applies great care and thoughtfulness in making its funding decisions, as it has in the past fiscal year, awarding funding assistance in the amount of $325,160 to 85 projects. These range from school programming for growing communities of new Ukrainian Canadians in rural Manitoba to the Quebec premiere of L. Kuzmenko’s “Golden Harvest” Oratorio by the McGill Chamber Orchestra.

Also this past year the Shevchenko Foundation advanced initiatives aimed at young people through its Future Leaders program, particularly those initiatives that allow for young people to immerse themselves in study and cultural experience on either continents.

One of the components of this program is to provide financial support to Canadian undergraduate students seeking to learn the Ukrainian language through the immersive experience of summer language courses offered at several universities in Ukraine. This year we supported 20 Canadian students from across Canada in their journey to experience the language and culture of Ukraine.

An innovative new component of the Future Leaders program is the new partnership announced in June, 2017 between the Shevchenko Foundation and Mitacs, a national non-for-profit research and training organization. Through the generous support of the Myhal Family Foundation, this new program provides opportunities for top-ranked students from Ukraine to intern at Canadian universities in the fields of science and technology.

This year we celebrated the seventh biennial awarding of the Kobzar™ Literary Award. Unbound: Ukrainian Canadians Writing Home – a book of essays by seven prominent Canadian Ukrainian authors, edited by Lisa Grekul and Lindy Ledohowski, was chosen the winner amongst five short-listed authors. The Shevchenko Foundation takes great pride in having initiated this major $25,000 Canadian literary prize in 2006, which now boasts 8 award-winning books, and over 100 short-listed books. Our heartfelt thanks to the steadfast group of dedicated volunteers who have made the Award Gala evening one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year.

The work of the Shevchenko Foundation in advancing a flourishing Ukrainian community for the enrichment of Canada is made possible through the generous support of our donors. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Shevchenko Foundation I express deep gratitude to all our donors and benefactors for their unwavering support in building a lasting legacy of pride in our community.

May God Bless you!

The Shevchenko Foundation portfolio remains conservative, but nevertheless, in an unstable market year it resulted in a return of 7% with the portfolio currently standing at $37.7 million.

The last quarter of the Foundation’s year saw the return of volatility to equity markets, something that had been virtually non-existent throughout 2017. Despite a strong start to 2018, with global growth and corporate earnings still healthy, investor fears over rising bond yields and inflation expectations caused a sharp correction in equities in early February. Although some of the losses soon reversed, this volatility continued into March, led by fears over a global trade war and a pullback in the technology sector.

While trade war rhetoric steals the headlines, our best line of defence is to stay diversified.

The Our Legacy Our Tomorrow Campaign is augmenting the Shevchenko Foundation’s permanent endowment, allowing the Foundation to support more artists and more organizations with more generous grants.

For the second year, the interest earned on the investment of the donations to the Our Legacy Our Tomorrow campaign is impacting the funding of projects. In this fiscal year the invested

funds have supported over 40% of allocated grants.

The Our Legacy Our Tomorrow campaign continues to seek opportunities with current and new donors. Donor recognition events and tax estate planning seminars are being planned to honour those who see the value of investing in the Foundation, informing prospective donors about the most beneficial ways of giving, as well

as broadening awareness about the scope of the Shevchenko Foundation’s services to the community.

The Shevchenko Foundation is grateful to everyone who has helped us come this far and has been part of our journey. It is our hope that many more will join us and leave their legacy for generations to come.

MITACS GLOBALINK A N I N T E R N A T I O N A L I N I T I A T I V E

As a component of the newly established Shevchenko Foundation Future Leaders Fund, the

Shevchenko Foundation and Mitacs, a national not-for-profit research and training organization, in

June 2017 announced a new partnership that will allow Ukrainian undergraduate student interns to

participate in research projects at Canadian universities.

Through the generous support of the Myhal Family Foundation this new program allows Canadian

faculty and universities to benefit from the international perspectives and expertise of Ukrainian

student interns. The partnership with Mitacs dovetails with the Shevchenko Foundation youth

initiative and will serve to strengthen the Foundation’s links to Canadian academia in areas such

as the sciences, not usually associated with Ukrainian Canadian studies.

The deadline for Ukrainian student candidates to apply for the Mitacs Globalink program was

September 2017. A similar schedule for Canadian university faculty wishing to host interns took

place at the same time. By early 2018 Mitacs had selected and matched interns and faculty with

similar research interests.

Shevchenko Foundation is anticipating that close to 50 top-ranked students from

Ukraine will participate in this 12-week research internship under the

supervision of Canadian university faculty at post

secondary institutions located across the country.

Students are provided with professional skills

training and gain valuable knowledge about

Canadian industry and innovation.

For the past 17 years Mitacs has designed and

delivered research and training programs in Canada,

working with 60 Canadian universities, private firms

and governments to build partnerships that support

industrial and social innovation in Canada.

The Shevchenko Foundation acknowledges the

financial generosity of the Myhal Family Foundation,

the Western NIS Enterprise Fund and the support of

the Ministry of Education of Ukraine in making this

project possible.

With the support of the Shevchenko Foundation of Canada, my theatre company, Pyretic Productions, successfully developed and presented the world premiere of the new Ukrainian Canadian play Blood of Our Soil by Lianna Makuch.

Blood of Our Soil is a unique creative production depicting the struggles of the Ukrainian people against the atrocities of Stalin, to the horrors of Hitler, while drawing disturbing parallels to the current Putin regime.

We received an overwhelmingly positive response from both Ukrainian audiences and the community at large….We believe that live storytelling through theatre can evoke an empathetic emotional experience, and allow people to connect to the story on a visceral level. Lianna Makuch, writer and actor

We would like to express our deepest thanks to the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko for their support of this project. Without that support, we would not have had the amazing opportunities and achievements that we have enjoyed this past year. This project has literally opened the doors to a new facet of our career, and the support we received from the Shevchenko Foundation played a large role.Brian Cherwick, for The Kubasonics

K AT E RY N A K H A RTO VAI thank you for your generous donation of $2000 to support my music education. I was ecstatic to learn that you had chosen to support me in my training with Opera Nuova.

The six weeks that I have spent with Opera Nuova had an enormous impact on my vocal and artistic skill. I had a chance to meet and train with many renowned musicians, conductors and theatre directors from across the country.

It is very hard for young artists to balance working full time jobs and still grow and develop their skill at a high level. There are many sacrifices and hard decisions to be made on our way to success. Thus, I am beyond grateful to be a part of the Ukrainian community who supports their own people and help them achieve their goals.

I truly hope that my hard work will one day enrich our Ukrainian Canadian music culture.

The Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada (CYM) wishes to express its utmost gratitude for the grant of $5000 for the Canada 150 Hiking Camp held August 6 – 19, 2017 in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

Among the vast highlights of the two weeks was meeting Dr. Lubomy Luciuk at Fort Henry for a private tour and talk about Ukrainian immigration to the Kingston-Cornwall areas as well as the WWI Internment Camps and Operations.

While in Ottawa, the visit to the Canadian War Museum included learning more about Filip Konowal and seeing his Victoria Cross medal…These are but a few incredible educational experiences afforded the participants, made possible by the Shevchenko Foundation’s grant.- Maria Shysh, Organizing Committee Chair, National Executive Ukrainian

I would recommend this program to every student in the university, even if its not in their main field of study. This program provides an amazing opportunity to both learn and experience the culture of Ukraine. The students will not only read and listen about Ukraine, but will also be emerged in the life of Ukrainians, helping them to further understand this unique lifestyle.- Oksana Sovinska, Winnipeg

The Leo Mol Sculpture Garden is a treasured part of Assiniboine Park (Winnipeg, MB). Opened in 1992, with approximately 300 artworks by Leo Mol in the collection (paintings, works on paper, ceramics, and bronze sculptures), the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden at Assiniboine Park is a cherished Winnipeg landmark. The collection appears throughout the sculpture Garden, the Gallery (glass building), and the School House Studio.

With the generous support of the Shevchenko Foundation…..the Assiniboine Park Conservancy was able to make improvements and add a new exhibit to the Leo Mol Gallery. The improvements and the new exhibit, The Paintings of Leo Mol …will hopefully increase public appreciation and knowledge of the works created by Leo Mol. While also recognizing his contributions to art, the Ukrainian community, and Manitoba.- Christina Prokopchuk, Curator & Art Conservator

Aims And ObjectsOF THE UKRAINIAN CANADIAN VETERANS’ FUND

The Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Fund (UCVF) was established with realized assets from the sale of the Ukrainian Royal Canadian Legion Branch 360 in Toronto. It was instituted as a designated fund to hallow, in perpetuity, the memory of World War I and World War II veterans, and to advocate the principles of a democratic and independent Ukrainian state.

For the first ten years the Shevchenko Foundation provided grants selected by a special Advisory Council. The fund is currently being governed by the Shevchenko Foundation by a specified group of aims and objectives, which continue to be relied upon by the Foundation in selecting appropriate grants that align with the values and principles of the Fund.

Applications for funding assistance from the UCVF Fund are available through the Shevchenko Foundation website www.shevchenkofoundation.com/funding-opportunities. Deadlines for applications are October 1st and April 1st of each year.

OUR ANNUAL CAMPAIGNSOur direct mail campaigns allow us to connect with our donors and to provide a small gift of appreciation to our friends. Your financial donation to the Foundation through these campaigns is vital to our survival and operation.

Our Christmas Card and Shevchenko Month campaigns also benefit our community of visual artists. Twice-yearly they are invited to submit original works of art based on their visualization of the Ukrainian Christmas experience, or their interpretation of a selected poem written by Taras Shevchenko. And twice-yearly two artists have their work selected and published, and appreciated in thousands of homes across Canada.

Over 30 established and promising visual artists have had their works published in this way by the Shevchenko Foundation.

A N N U A L R E P O R TThe Annual Report is published and distributed in early fall of each year to inform our donors and other interested people of our activities. Besides a report on the financial performance of the Shevchenko Foundation, it is a comprehensive and visual account of the grants allocated during the fiscal year, and the many individuals and organizations who have received them.

C H R I S T M A S C A R D SDuring the Christmas season, the Shevchenko Foundation mails Christmas cards to each of our donors for their personal use. This gift from the Foundation is our way of expressing appreciation and good will to our supporters. The image is selected annually from submitted works by Ukrainian Canadian artists, and the cards have become an anticipated and welcomed tradition in homes across Canada.

S H E V C H E N K O M O N T HEvery March, the Shevchenko Foundation commemorates the work of our namesake, Ukraine’s greatest poet and patriarch - Taras Shevchenko. We do this by distributing over 30,000 bookmarks to children and youth enrolled in Ukrainian language classes, Ukrainian Bilingual schools, Ukrainian dance schools, and youth groups across Canada. Now it its 17th year, this souvenir art reproduction has become a collector’s item for many.

DOMINIKA KOZIAK

Dominika is a Canadian artist with a Ukrainian-Polish cultural background. Born in 1991 in Edmonton, Alberta, Dominika completed her Bachelor of

Fine Arts degree at the University of Alberta in 2013.

Dominika then moved to New York City where she attained her Master of Fine Arts degree at the School of Visual Arts. Dominika also received intensive training at the Rome Art Program in Italy where she focused on painting and drawing from classical architecture and art.

In New York City she attended the Prosopon School of Iconology, where she studied classical techniques and the style of Icon writing.

DAYNA KONOPELNY

Winnipeg-born artist Dayna Konopelny is a graduate of Theatre Design at the University of Winnipeg, and a life-long participant in Ukrainian cultural and community activities.

In creating the 2018 Shevchenko Foundation bookmark, Dayna “…looked to encapsulate the essence of youth. On Easter morning each child is given a gift. The gifts are represented through the Easter eggs suspended by the Sun’s rays. The rays reach towards the sky bending and swaying similar to the spirit of a child. The colours are bright and vibrant to emphasize the joy of Easter Sunday”.

Dayna’s artistic style looks to combine bright colours with Ukrainian designs.

In presenting the prize, Mr. Hladyshevsky, Q.C. stressed the significance of the Award not only within the Ukrainian Canadian community, but in the broader Canadian context. “The Ukrainian Canadian story has lessons for all Canadians”, he said, adding that as a result of the Shevchenko Foundation’s 2006 initiative to create the Kobzar™ Literary Award, there are now over 100 literary works that make up the current anthology of short-listed and award-winning books relating the Ukrainian Canadian heritage experience.

A $5,000 prize was awarded to the publisher of the winning book – University of Toronto Press, and a prize of $1,500 awarded to each of the short-listed authors.

Special guests at the 2018 Kobzar™ Literary Award gala included Honorary Patron and the evening’s keynote speaker, The Honorable Senator Raynell Andreychuk; Geoffrey E. Taylor, Director and Christine Saratsiotis, Associate Director, International Festival of Authors at Harbourfront Centre; John Degen, Executive Director of the Writers’ Union of Canada; actor and comedienne Luba Goy, co-winner of the 2014 Kobzar™ Literary Award; Paul Grod, President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

Special gratitude was extended to the Kobzar™ Literary Award’s key sponsors for their generous support: Marta Witer and Ihor Ihnatowycz, Ihnatowycz Family Foundation; Nexus Portfolio Management & Financial Counsel; BCU Foundation; UCU Ukrainian Credit Union; Mitchell, Bardyn & Zalucky LLP; The Huculak Foundation; Delores Y. Buka-Huculak (for gifting of short-listed books), Nell Nakoneczny as well as many other donors who were recognized in the programme booklet.

Dr. Christine Turkewych, Director of Literary Arts Program, Shevchenko Foundation was recognized for her direction of the Kobzar™ Literary Award, and special gratitude was extended to the volunteer Kobzar Award Ceremony Committee, chaired by Alla Shklar.

On March 1, 2018 Ukrainian and Canadian literati, community leaders and book enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the seventh biennial awarding of the Kobzar™ Literary Award.

The sold-out gathering at the Palais Royale, Toronto, welcomed the five finalists short-listed for the 2018 Kobzar™ Literary Award:

Masters of Ceremonies national book columnist and writer Becky Toyne along with Shevchenko Foundation Executive Assistant and broadcaster, producer Bohdana Bashuk led a dynamic award evening program, which included the highly-anticipated readings from the nominated works.

Referred by J. Pidkowich (New Pathway Ukrainian News) as one of the “best features of the award event”, each of the authors took to the podium to speak about the inspiration for their writing, and to read a passage from their short-listed book.

The 2018 adjudication panel of writers’ peers were introduced – Prof. Randy Boyagoda, Charlotte Gray CM, and Maurice Mierau, winner of the 2016 Kobzar™ Literary Award. SASKATCHEWAN FRIENDS OF THE

SHEVCHENKO FOUNDATION

On May 25, 2017 the Saskatchewan Friends of the Shevchenko Foundation —Saskatoon Chapter (SFSF – SC) celebrated their 20th Anniversary Annual Fundraising and Donor Appreciation Event in Saskatoon to benefit the Foundation.

In her welcoming remarks, SFSF-SC Committee Chair Sonia Mysak spoke of the significance of hosting the 20th Anniversary Event and of the benefits of donations made to the Shevchenko Foundation. She introduced Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C., National President of the Shevchenko Foundation, as well as Members of the Shevchenko Foundation Board of Directors in attendance: Scott Armstrong, Adrian Boyko, Gordon Gordey, Irka Mycak, Wally Shoemay, and Orest Sklierenko.

John and Angeline Chrusch were inducted as the newest members of the Kobzar Fellowship, which recognizes and honours those who have made provision for the Foundation through a bequest or other deferred gift.

Raised in Saskatchewan farming communities, John and Angeline (Mialkowsky) Chrushch dedicated a large part of their lives to building a strong Ukrainian Canadian community through their participation in Church and community life. Throughout their lives they engaged, and continue to actively engage, in Ukrainian Catholic Eparchial organizations, as well as such organizations and events as the Musée Ukraina Museum, Ukrainian Day in the Park, Vesna Festival, and many others related to their Ukrainian heritage.

MC Nissa Baran honoured past and present donors, and presented the evening’s entertainment, featuring Lastiwka Ukrainian Orthodox Choir & Orchestra, Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble and Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble, who once again, generously volunteered their talents for this event each year and have been previous recipients of Foundation support.

The annual SFSF-SC Events have raised more than $150,000 for the capital fund of the Shevchenko Foundation over the last 20 years. The 2017 Event raised over $11,600 in income from all sources.

The SFSF-SC Committee along with the Shevchenko Foundation is extremely grateful to the continued support of all their donors, talented performers, and many volunteers who so willingly give of themselves to this worthwhile event.

In particular, the Shevchenko Foundation extends its gratitude to the SFSF-SC organizing committee – Sonia Mysak, Chair, Nissa Baran, Sylvia Baran, Sonia Boyko, Kathy Davyduke, Eldred Hrytsak, Orysia Shrubsole, Zenya Werezak and Betty Zatylny.
