Principal Report Last week the school celebrated Education Week with the theme of ‘Celebrating the Arts’. This saw a variety of activities running throughout the week that included mural painting, piano performances, teacher’s band, Grease performance, student band and voice performances and origami. Thank you to everyone involved in this week and your continued support of the programs that run at Lalor Secondary College. This week is National Reconciliation week that mark two Milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: The 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively. In 2017, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo deci-sion. The National Sorry Day ceremonies were held on Saturday the 26th of May to pay respect to the Stolen Gener-ations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people past and present. The aims of our National Sorry Day are to:

Ensure Aboriginal people have a voice Promote and strengthen Aboriginal people’s sense of belonging and connectedness Build networks and relationships within and across communities Enhance education in local communities Foster awareness of reconciliation initiatives

As we commemorate these significant milestones, I ask our entire school community to have discussions around these events both in school and at home. The increased awareness and understanding of these events significantly contributes to the reconciliation process. To raise the awareness of this week the following has been arranged.

On a daily basis our students impress me and all of the staff here at Lalor Secondary College, and we know of the wonderful behaviours and achievements that they display every day in their busy and hectic lives. However, it is not often that someone from outside of our school community takes the time out of their busy schedule to acknowledge our students and recognise the behaviours they encounter as a member of the general public. I would like to thank you to Asha Kuspira for sending in some correspondence that does just that and share her thoughts with our community. On the 1st of May 2018, a year 8 class of your school was on board my South Morang train as I got on at Res-ervoir station. The Carriage was filled with students chatter as they were obviously taking a trip to the city with their class. I got on and stood on the train as there were no empty seats, I did not mind as this time train in the morning is usually full when I get on. I was absolutely astounded by how long it took a student to ask me if I wanted their seat, and I mean probably within minutes of being aboard the train. The student politely asked me “ Ma’am would you like a seat there’s one here” I politely declined as I was fine with standing until a seat became available. I just couldn’t believe how well-mannered the student was. As the next stations ap-proached without fail people who got on board were offered seats by the students sitting in them. The behav-iour your students showed at their age was beyond their years, better than adults have shown at times. You should feel very proud that your students have repre-sented your school in such a positive light and were re-spectful of other people around them. The teacher Ms.Moore I think I heard was doing a great job at rounding up the students when disembarking from the station and also keeping them in check as they were spread out throughout the carriage, hats off to her! As someone who has coming from a high school who would always fill up public transport and was loud, I couldn’t believe how well behaved these students were and only in year 8! Just wanted to share my valuable experience as a passer-by, as I know positive feedback should always be passed on! I hope you will pass on this feedback to the class. Kind Regards, Asha Kuspira.

I would like to remind all parents of the student free days that will be occurring in the coming weeks. On Friday the 1st of June the school has a Curriculum Day and students are not required at the school. On Monday the 11th of June it is the Queen’s Birthday holiday and the school will be closed for business. There is always so much happening at Lalor Secondary College with numerous events running and being cele-brated as has been described above. However in the last week we have seen the following occur – Victorian Chess Zonal Competition, Inter and Senior Girls Sport, AIME mentoring, Junior Gils Football, Year 10 and 11 Careers Expo, Year 12 Top Designs Excursion as well as production and music rehearsals. I thank all of the staff who are making our college such a vibrant and inter-esting place and I encourage all of our students to get involved in the extra-curricular program over the year. Please see the associated articles in this newsletter for more information. And lastly I would like to thank Tim Cottrell who has been acting in the role of Assistant Principal for the past 6 weeks while Peter James was on leave. Tim has done a great job while in the role and will now return to his role as Programs leader. We welcome back Peter James into his role as Assistant Principal on Monday the 28th of May. If you would like assistance with any of the above infor-mation please contact me on 9463 7300. Best regards, Corey Jewell College Principal

Year 11 & 12

I recently had the privilege of attending the VCE Premier’s awards to recognise the achievements of the top performers in the 2017 VCE. Only 234 students from the 2017 VCE group of 51,000 students in Victoria, were recognised at these awards. Lalor Secondary College was represented by Clare Freeman of Year 12. As a year 11 student last year Clare received a result of a study score of 50 for Biology. This was an exceptional achieve-ment borne of hard work by Clare. I was incredibly proud to see Clare recognised for the work that goes into achieving a result as impressive as this.

Year 12 students are busy working with the Senior Team as they head towards the end of Unit 3 and into their final Semester of schooling. I’d like to thank Adam Cairns the Senior Sub School Leader for his work and thank all staff who are involved in the Year 12 Mentor Program for offering an additional level of sup-port for our Year 12 cohort in what can be a stressful year with competing demands for students.

All students enrolled in a Unit 3 subject will do the GAT (General Achievement Test) on Wednesday the 13th of June. They will have a session at the school that familiarises them with the ex-pectations of that assessment and will be given some strategies on how to prepare.

Year 11s are headed into an examination period and there are also some other key dates below that have been communicated via a letter and Compass news item.

Years 9 & 10

Last week we had year 7 and year 9 students complete their Naplan Tests. It was wonderful to see all students trying their best, and feeling confident in their efforts. The year 9 team were especially proud of our students, who for the first time sat these tests in the Drama Centre as one group. Their behaviour and conduct throughout these tests was exemplary and for the year 9 students, this experience puts them in good practice for the June Exams.

On Friday this week, The Year 10 and 11 Careers Expo was held in the LSC Drama Centre. This information extravaganza was organised by Ms Sakelaris and Ms Cujic, and provided students with the opportunity to visit stalls and collect information about a variety of career pathways. Students appreciated the ability to chat in depth about specifics regarding the nature of work and the qualifications required to get them into that field of study. This event is timely as students will soon be preparing to make selections for their senior years of study and supports them in their decision making process. We had representatives from a variety of local universities, as well as the Police Force, Victorian Fisheries and the Australian Government. A huge thank you to Ms Sakelaris and Ms Cujic for all the many hours spent to organise such a fantastic event for our students.

Even though the weather was dull and drab, we had loads of excitement here at LSC. This week staff and students celebrated Education Week. This year the theme was one of “Celebrating the Arts”. Ms Carmody has worked very closely with the Arts Faculty to organise a fantastic program of events for all students to get involved and celebrate the arts. Thank you to the teachers who made our lunchtimes just that little bit more interesting and allowed us to get creative.

We had mural painting, origami, drawing and music performances, including two great numbers from the year 9 student band which had the crowd in the drama centre cheering for more and a finale of a couple of rock classics from the staff band. It was great to see so many students and staff enjoying these fun filled activities. I truly believe we have the best group of Arts teaching staff in Melbourne. When you are visiting the college next time, I am confident you will see (and hear) their creative influence far and wide. LSC is indeed looking fantastic, and the music being generated by staff and students is amazing! What a great place to be! The year 10 team are still waiting on a substantial number of work Experience forms to be returned. They were due back last Friday 25th May. Please check with your year 10 child to ensure they have organised a visit and have returned their forms. A reminder that work experience is a compulsory part of the year 10 program. Please do not hesitate to contact Ms Bussell, Mr Danher or visit the school website for specific de-tails relating to the Work Experience Program or if you are having difficulty finding work experience placements.

A reminder that on Friday June 1st, teaching staff will be par-ticipating in a curriculum day and that no students will be re-quired at school. This day will allow staff to work on further developing and strengthening strategies for their Literacy Action Plans for use in their classes. All staff at LSC are committed to support and extend the literacy of their students. This day will build upon the workshop facilitated by Professor Misty Adonou who spent time with our staff last term and expanded our understanding of effective ways to support literacy and language growth of all students.

This day will also provide time for teachers to further investigate and understand literacy and numeracy data and make accurate judgements about the learning requirements at each student’s point of learning in their class.

Ms. Laura Forster

Year 7 & 8

It has been a great pleasure to again support the Junior School team during Peter James’ period of leave. The time has rushed by, and Peter is back from next week. Thank you to our outstanding staff at 7 and 8, and to our Wellbeing team. It is truly a privilege to serve with such professionals in making a difference for our students.

Education week has seen many of our students either partici-pating in activities, or viewing them. There has been a wide variety on offer, from displays of art to a range of live student performances. Such events contribute to what has become an increasingly vibrant and colourful campus.

I note that a number of our students took part in AIMES work-shops at Burwood campus of Deakin University, as part of our Indigenous support program. A theme of the workshop was about identity and resilience, that to strive is all important, and to believe in one’s self despite hurdles such as failure in life…the important thing is to keep going and not be deterred from reaching for the stars. In this way failure can be one of our greatest learning experiences.

Congratulations to all students who participated in this pro-gram, the reports have been excellent. I recently heard Radio National’s political commentator Patricia Karvelas commenting on this idea, that she actually remembers her failures far more than her successes, because it is during these times that we change and grow. Thank you and congratulations to also our Acting Program Leader, Lana Siryani, for her work with these and many other students during my role as Acting Assistant Principal.

As winter is well and truly upon us, I remind students about not wearing their outdoor clothing (spray jackets) in class. This leads to discomfort where body temperatures is not regulated for the outdoors, and our heating cannot properly serve it’s purpose.

A real focus has been upon the Arts during Education Week, and this is has been everywhere evident. Wild and Wonderful murals continue to wrap their way about the college, contributing greatly to the colourful and creative ambience. Many Junior school students have participated in the production of these murals.

Again thank you all, it has been good to meet with many parents during this period and I look forward to continuing sharing in the positive experiences of our students throughout the year.

Music Muse

Music performances filled the airways during Education Week at Lalor Secondary College this week.

The College celebrated Education Week through the Arts and music students performed piano, vocals and guitars in the mu-sic department as well as bands and singer performances in the Drama Centre. There was a special vocal performance of ‘We Go Together’ from the cast of our school’s up-coming pro-duction Grease with the band performances in the Drama centre.

Our school is particular proud of our Performing Arts students and wish to congratulate the following music students in par-ticular for their solo, duo and group performances. Keira Bow-man-Bartolome, Nicholas Phan, Tommy Tran, Adrian Mathiwathanan, Kaulyn Muna, Tuba Karademir, and Jenny Lu. A further congratulation is also due to the cast of Grease under the direction of Ms Corvosce and her assistant Ms Van Der Weyde. The music faculty wishes to thank the schools VCAL students who helped set up and pack up all the music band instruments, amplifiers, PA system and microphones.

A special acknowledgement is due to Ms Tsolokidis, Ms Sakel-laris, Mr Krstevskifor and Ms Cujic for their support in manag-ing set up and pack up. A team effort indeed that could not have been possible to finish with the teacher band ‘In Deten-tion’ and their performance. The music faculty wishes to thank the teacher band members who performed for our students, Mr Matzke, Ms Radford, Mr Kotsopoulos, Ms Tsolokidis, Ms Ryan, and our latest addition Ms Robinson – Thank you!

AIME Mentoring On the 24th of May, a group of year 9’s and a year 11 student went to Deakin University to participate in the AIME mentoring program to learn more about their Aboriginal culture. The day was aimed at understanding and growth. It offered a place where you could learn from your mistakes. We learnt that there’s no such thing as shame when it comes to our identity and participated in activities which promoted the idea “it’s OK to fail”. The day provided us with the confidence to try and set ourselves up with a clearer mindset and positive approach to our learning. No matter how many times you fail, there will always be another a path to where you want to go. Shaytirra Proctor 9F
