AUGUST 1988 NEWSLETTER
WE'RE HERE!! On Thursday, July 20, we arrived in Lilongwe, the capilol city ofMalawi. We were met at the airport by Vonnie's parents, Bill and Jackie Brant. Weloaded all of our luggage into the Brants' car and small trailer and drove three hoursto Biantyre, the city where we will be living. We had a long but enjoyable flightover. Our lay over in Amsterdam allowed us to catch up on sleep and begin to adjustto the time change, as well as do some sight-seeing.
GETTING SETTLED Our time in Malawi thus far has been spent in recovering from jetlag and getting ourselves oriented and organized. As we write this newsletter, we'veonly been in Malawi two weeks, so we're just now starting to get adjusted to the timechange, climate change, etc. We will be filling in for the Brants while they are onfurlough from September until January, as well as slaying in their house, so we arelearning how to fulfill the various responsibilities of their work.
WHAT LIES AHEAD. During the next few months, will begin that "ever so fun" processof language learning. We are searching now for the best methodology for learningChichewa, as there are a number of classes and learning techniques to choose from. Also during this time we will sizing up the work. With the church in Malawi being solarge and growing so rapidly, it will probably take some time to gain an accurateunderstanding of the state of the work here.
STEVE'S FIRST SERMON IN MALAWI. On Saturday July 29, I had the opportunity topreach my first sermon in Malawi! The occasion was an area church conference inthe far southern part of Malawi. Gathered at this conference were church membersand church leaders from all over that region as well as from Mozambique. What a joyit was to share with them from God's Word!
FINANCIAL UPDATE. As many of you know, we had a very unwelcome surprise inearly July. We were informed that a new policy demanded that we establish a specialexit fund of 7000 Kwacha, approximately $2,600, in a Malawian bank before we couldreceive a work permit. We praise God that we now have the money in the bank tocover this! Our biggest need at this point is to build funds for the purchase of a truck. We currently have no transportation of our own at . all. We need to raiseapproximately $9,000 in the next few weeks to purchase a vehicle. Although notcomplete, monthly support has been coming in. We are hoping and praying that wewill be able to write to you soon that all the monthly support has been commited.
PRAYER NEEDS. Please be in prayer about the following:♦Monthly Support ♦Funds 'for Truck
♦Steve and Von's Language Training ♦Sensitivity to Needs of Malawians

Dear Christian Friends,
We need you to help us make a difference in Malawi, Africa. In the New Testament Jesus once said that "the fields are whiteunto harvest." This statement could not be more true of Malawi! The church there has grown froJiL^lO jconareaations in 1979 to wellover 150 congregations currently. Includrrig the churches thathave been started in neighboring Mozambique, an oppressive communist country, the total number of congregations is approximately
But currently there are pr^^^wo. families working in southernMalawi and reaching over the ^ord^F''̂ W€"6" Mozambique. Many churchesare lucky if a missionary can visit their congregation once ayear! When one considers that most of these congregations are
^^^ry young and that there are only few trained national leaders,^ the need in Malawi becomes ctfeyiPUS. Who will go to Malawi and
aid in training national leaders? Who will go to Malawi to helpyoung churches mature in Christ? Who will go to Malawi to reachout to groups of natives, urban blacks, and Europeans that arestill unreached? Based upon the of Bill and JackieBrant, veteran missionaries to MaiawTTv^nie and I are willingto ,go^ to Malawi to seek to meet those needs.
Vonnie and I have spent the last few years/ preparing ourselves for God's service. Vonnie, who is the daughter" of missionaries Bill and Jackie Brant, received, her Associate degreefrom Kentucky Christian College in 1986. I graduated suroma cumlaude from K.Cin 1987 with a major" in Bible and Christian
iHinistries an^T^am 'Currently working on Master of Arts degreein Missions from Cincinnati Bible Seminary./
We have been preparing ourselves for the work, and we arejgo...but we need your help. We are nnrr^n^iy gppirinrf
churches and individuals of faith and action who willa:^^J;;dadULS inour endeavor to reach out to Malawi. We not only need to find-inaxxt^iJ^suimorters who will help us toward our total need of
^ $3,000/month ( $2,000-Mission fund and $1,000-Salary), bat Tj:e.,one-time gifts toward the great costs of rejjjcatij
(and" beginning a new life on the mission field!
will you help us make a difference in Malawi?! Feel freeto call us or write us for more information oh how you can makea difference!!!
Yours in Christ,
Steve and Vonnie SkaggsMissionary Recruits to Malawi

MALAWI - {
In the New Testament Jesus once said that
"the fields are ripe for harvest." This statementcould not be more true of Malawi! The churchthere has grown from 10 congregations in 1979to well over 150 congregations currently. Including the churches that have been started inneighboring Mozambique, an oppressive communist country, the total number of congregra-tions is apporximately 2501! Malawi Is certainlyripe for harvest. The only question is "who willgo to work in the harvest?"
OUR PART IN THE HARVEST
We will be working in several areas of the mala-wian work. Of course, as we begin we will be concentrating on learning the language and cultureof the Malawian people. But as we become moreknowledgable in our understanding of Malawianlanguage and culture,we will work in the areasof leadership development, preaching, teaching, and new church developement. We will also beinvolved in creating new programs, such as a program meeting the need for Christian education forthe young people.

Many of our friends have asked "when do youwant us to start supporting you?" It is presentlyour goal to leave for the mission field In early July 1989. Of course, we will need all of our support at that time. Currently, however, Steve isworking as Youth Minister of Grove Church ofChrist in Gambier, Ohio. So our major need at thispoint is the build up of funds to meet our largeone-time expenses and of funds for publicity andsupport-raising. On January 1, 1989 we will beleaving our position at Grove to raise support full-time and make preparations to leave. At that timewe will need at least $600.00 per month to meetliving expenses before setting to the field. Weneed your support! Prayerfully consider theabove needs and make a commitment to harvest
the fields and/or challenge your congragations tobe a partner with us.
