    Awareness

    A couple of years ago,

    nobody was talking

    about GMO labelling on

    the world news. But

last week, even thoughthe vote on Washington

    States I-522 GMO

    labelling initiative turned

out to be bad for the

    movement, the national

    and also international

    coverage - pointing out

    the role of corporate

    cash-was good for the

    movement. Resistance

    against the big

    corporations is the way

    forward.

Plastic: food for thoughtI came across an article in The Alternative Daily that I wanted to share:

Over 87 % of Americans have access to either curbside or drop-off

recycling programs. Each week most conservation-conscious individuals

proudly bring out their bins heaped with recycled bottles, cans, papers

and boxes under the guise that all of this carefully sorted waste will be

remade into something new. Unfortunately that is not exactly how the

process works.China imports over 70 percent of the worlds electronic and plastic waste

each year. In fact, discarded plastic accounted for our largest export to

China by value in 2011. The reason? Plastic waste can be processed

much cheaper in China than in the United States. And because the Asian

country is so eager for our garbage, America has yet to implement a

sound and efficient plastic recycling program, due primarily to the high

labor costs involved and environmental concerns it would pose.

However, all of that has changed with the implementation of ChinasGreen Fence Policy. As of this year, China will no longer accept our plastic

trash. So you can pretty much bet that those yogurt cups and shampoo

bottles that you so diligently separated from your household garbage are

not being remoulded into a new product, but sitting in a landfill

somewhere. And many of the self-righteous recyclers right here in

    America are to blame.

About 20% of the plastics China receives are contaminated and

therefore, cannot be recycled. In fact youve probably done ityourself, tossed a cup or bottle in the bin without cleaning it out. Or

maybe threw something in there that wasnt recyclable but figured

    it was no big deal.

Well that minor slip can be the cause of a whole load of potential

reusable products to be cast into a landfill where theyll leach their

toxins into the land and eventually into the water we drink. The plants

in China were forced to bury the contaminated loads or, even worse,

burn them, which polluted their own land, air and water.

As a result, the Green Fence Policy will keep our plastics right here, which

means for the time being anyway, in our own landfills. However, the Green

Fence Policy may not be all that bad.

Until now, we simply shut our eyes to the consequences of shipping our

plastic trash overseas. The fuel alone is a major use of resources, not to

mention the fact that with each outing we pollute the seas and affect the

wildlife. But many of Chinas plants lack proper water-treatment facilities, meaning that the wastewater from the plants is left to wash back into the

    rivers and streams.

Many domestic recycling plants see Chinas policy as a benefit. They

wont have to fight with the less-expensive Asian recycling market and

can produce a number of much-needed jobs right at home.

However, until more centers establish safe recycling standards its

best to avoid using plastics when possible. Avoid pre-packaged and

single-serving containers, use cloth shopping bags and when youdo place your plastics in the recycling bin, wash them out first!

The article made me reflect on the fact that most of the containers I see

in the recycling boxes in Shirley (I am walking the ward!) are contaminated.

What on earth are the Councils contractors doing with them? Storing

them somewhere until they can be burned in the Viridors incinerator?

I also know people who wash plastic containers with detergents. Do they

realise that detergents pollute our environment? Is it a catch-22? No, wecan refuse to buy food in plastic containers that cannot be reused several

times. My husband says that I am a hoarder. Perhaps I am.

    correct but not very festive.

    Freedom Pass

The Freedom Pass is a concessionary travel scheme, which began in

1973, to provide free travel to residents of Greater London, England

who were aged 60 and over (eligibility age increasing by phases to 65

by 2020) or who have a disability. The scheme is funded by localauthorities and coordinated by London Councils. A Review is

published on pages 24 and 25. This briefing alerts members to London

Councils mid-term review of Freedom Pass cards issued in 2010, to

ensure that only those people still entitled to a Freedom Pass are able

to use it. Earlier this year, around 69,000 letters were sent to Freedom

Pass holders who appeared to have moved home. A second letter will

shortly be sent out to those people who have not yet responded to

confirm their eligibility. Please read it carefully because you might have

not received any letter. It is my opinion that The Freedom Pass might

be one of the next cuts, of course after the 2015 elections!

    LETS TALK

    ABOUT

    CROYDON

It was noted last month that Croydon is, officially, the most miserable

part of London. It is also home to hundreds of homeless people and

a place where there are, according to Croydon Council, 912 homeless

families. The number of people sleeping on the streets in Croydon

more than trebled in the last year.

I urge people to read http://insidecroydon.com/2013/11/22/lets-find-

    some-remedies-for-growing-issue-on-our-streets/ and to walk around

the town, counting the number of empty buildings that could be used

    to shelter the homeless.

The obscenely expensive new Council HQ makes the picture of the

town even more squalid. It is a big box of glass without style and soul, soon to be surrounded by equally ugly buildings dictated by an

    architectural strategy

    that responds to the

    context of Croydon. It

    seems that the

    architects reviewed the

    appearance of futureother buildings and

    architecture in the local

    area with the aim to

    design a development to

    complement the local

    architectural context. It

    beggars belief that an

    incompetent and

    arrogant administration

may be allowed to destroy a town and even plan some ethnic

cleansing by removing the poor and homeless around Queens

Gardens because their presence does nothing for property values. This

administration is delusional too because I doubt that people will flock

to occupy a residential scheme by a fly over and so very near a 24-

    hour-a-day incinerator.

An example of delusional plans is Altitude 25, half

empty and already crumbling after a few years. What

    a mess!

Trying to get away from it all, I went to explore the

Water Tower in Park Hill Recreation Ground, erected

in 1867. It is a prominent building that can be seen

all over the Borough. It was designed by Baldwin

Latham, Borough Engineer, in a brick Norman style.

The 75 foot diameter structure was built to contain

950,000 gallons of water, its dome being entirely

constructed from intricate brickwork. The tower was

opened to the public as a viewing platform in 1889.

During the First World War the tower's lofty heights were an excellent

vantage point for the observation of approaching hostile Zeppelins,

fires, excessive lighting, and weather. The building was listed Grade 2

in 1970 but has had the tanks and

timber removed. It still stands as a

    landmark for the people of

    Croydon and the surrounding

area. How long before plans to

transform it into luxury flats? Thereappears to be no maintenance

and somebody will claim that there

is no money for repairs, therefore

    it must be sold off.

    The Recreation Ground

    too is left to rot.

What disgusted me more thananything else was the condition of

Life and C M Barker is known

    Dear friends,

I just signed a petition to make companies come clean about damage they do to people

and the environment. Please sign it too:http://www/foe.co.uk/makeitbetter

Right now politicians are seriously considering writing new laws that would force

companies to admit risks they pose. That could include risks like those that led to

hundreds of fashion industry workers being killed in a building collapse at Rana Plaza,

    Bangladesh.

But the Make It Better Law needs the support of thousands more people to make it

happen. Please add your name to the petition today. Is it not about time we were able

to love our products, and the way they are made?

    Thank you Marzia

    Are you happy?

When a year ends, magazines offer advice from psychologists and

therapists and promise short-cuts to happiness, inviting readers to try

new ways to reach this elusive product. Sadly, the search forhappiness is one of the chief sources of unhappiness.

Bigger houses, fancier cars and exotic trips will not make you happy:

they are just part of the lure of consumer culture.

The Stoics argued that happiness results not from pursuing affluence

and status but rather virtue and wisdom. Pythagoras asked that his

followers take time, before going to sleep each night, to pose three

questions: What have I done? Where have I failed myself? Whatresponsibility have I not fulfilled?

Today so many believe that money will produce happiness but studies

show that once people are lifted out of poverty, their happiness is not

dependent on income. More often reported levels of well-being are a

combination of genetics, health, circumstances and coping skills.

Happiness comes when our aspirations are being fulfilled and we areoptimistic about the future, when we are developing our capabilities or

helping others develop theirs. In short, we are happiest when

happiness itself is not the goal.

Some believe that more me time and paying attention to oneself

produces happiness but the happiest individuals seem to be those

whose ordinary, everyday mode of living is being busy and

unconcerned with self. This does not mean sacrificing ones interestsfor someone else's. It means that we should set limits on our pursuit

of happiness and invite others into our lives.

I was struck by a tweet from Pope Francis: To live charitably means

not looking out for our own interests, but carrying the burdens of the

weakest and poorest among us. I realised that I could easily

substitute charitably with happily. It is indeed when I feel happier

and when I feel that my life is worthwhile.I feel happy in many other ways too.

I read, I write, I clean the house or go for a walk. I do not deprive my

    body of sleep.

I nourish my relationships because family and friends are everything in

    life.

I go outside to get some fresh air and sunshine, if there is any. IndeedI am happier in warmer countries!

I volunteer in the community: not only does it keep me active and on

my feet, but theres a definite social aspect as well, both of which

    contribute to my happiness.

I smile: when you smile at others, theyre also more likely to smile back

in return, creating an ongoing feedback loop that leads to morepositivity in my life and the lives of others.

I plan holidays even if I do not actually go on one. I read about

countries I would like to visit and research about customs and foods.

I practice gratitude: I am thankful for what I have and share it. I do not

keep a keep a gratitude journal or list, but plan what I can do tomorrow

or the day after to deliver my bit in my community.

I believe that true happiness comes from within: starting each day by

thinking of all the things I have to be thankful for is one way to put my

mind on the right track. I also do something that many people

nowadays frown upon: I pray. Having a spiritual dimension can change

    your life.

There are no shortcuts to happiness. One cannot experience joy 24

hours a day but one can still find pleasure in the small things in life.Postponing your happiness

until you reach a certain goal,

is a sure way to stay stuck in

    misery.

I surfed the web to find a

    picture to define happiness

and I chose a turtle eating astrawberry. It made me smile.

    A London Councils Member briefing

    Freedom Pass Review

    Overview

    November 2013

The Freedom Pass is Europes most comprehensive concessionary travel scheme which entitlesall older and eligible disabled Londoners to travel free on the capitals buses, trains, LondonUnderground, trams, and the Docklands Light Railway, as well as local buses across the country.

London Councils runs the Freedom Pass on behalf of all the London boroughs.

London Councils is undertaking a mid-term review of the Freedom Pass database to crack down

on fraud committed by people travelling for free by fraudulently using Freedom Passes meant forolder and disabled Londoners.

Before 2010, all Freedom Passes were reissued every two years which meant the record of who has aFreedom Pass was updated regularly. The new-style cards issued in 2010 (which have a photographof the owner on the card, rather than a separate photocard) are valid until 2015, so a review of thedatabase is being carried out halfway through the five year term. The sole purpose of this checkis to prevent fraud by confirming that everyone who has a Freedom Pass is entitled to have one.

The eligibility review is focused on older people as Freedom Pass holders with disabilities are

generally in close contact with their local authority. London Councils is going through itsdatabase of more than 1.2 million older people to check how many Freedom Pass holders havedied or moved home since March 2010.

A total of 96,983 Freedom Pass holders were flagged up as either having moved home withoutletting London Councils know where their new address is, or to have died.

If a Freedom Pass holder has died, their pass will be cancelled immediately so it cannot be usedby anyone else.

People who have moved out of London are no longer eligible for a Freedom Pass because it is paidfor by all the London boroughs which have invested more than 3 billion into the scheme over

    the past 20 years.

    Analysis

This briefing alerts members to London Councils mid-term review of Freedom Passcards issued in 2010, to ensure that only those people still entitled to a Freedom

Pass are able to use it. Earl

er this year, around 69,000 letters were sent to FreedomPass holders who appeared to have moved home. A second letter will shortly be sentout to those people who have not yet responded to confirm their eligibility.

  • 8/13/2019 SL November 2013

    25/6925

Even if the Freedom Pass holder still lives in the capital, London Councils must log the newaddress to keep accurate records of how many Freedom Pass holders there are in each boroughso the cost of the scheme can be fairly divided between the local authorities.

In late 2012 and early 2013 London Councils wrote to all 69,000 Freedom Pass holders who havemoved from the address listed on the database to ask them to either confirm they were stillliving in London or to return their Freedom Pass if they had moved out of the capital. This letterwas sent to the new address, if known, and to the address listed on the Freedom Pass database.

London Councils is now sending a final reminder to 39,530 people who have not yet respondedto confirm their eligibility to request they verify whether or not they are still eligible to have aFreedom Pass.

If the Freedom Pass holder still lives in London, they must complete the slip at the end ofthe letter confirming their address and return it to: London Councils, Mid-Term Review,

Journeycall Ltd, Laurencekirk Business Park, Laurencekirk AB30 1AJenclosing a copy of a

recent bank statement, utility bill or council tax statement. Alternatively they may scan theirbill or statement and email it with their details to [email protected]

People who do not respond by 13 December 2013, will have their Freedom Pass stopped inJanuary 2014.

Many Londoners rely on the Freedom Pass to maintain their independence.

People may not be aware that using someones Freedom Pass after they have died is fraud.Freedom Pass holders who continue to use their passes after moving out of London are also

    committing fraud.

We are checking our database to minimise the number of Freedom Passes which are usedfraudulently because these are very valuable travel cards. This is tax payers money and weare accountable for ensuring Freedom Passes are only used by people who are eligible forconcessionary travel.

Many Londonersrely on theFreedom Pass tomaintain theirindependenceand we are

accountablefor ensuringFreedom Passesare only used bypeople who areeligible for these

The Countless Uses for CoconutNathalie Baron of Garden of

    Pomegranates introduced me to

coconut oil, which she uses in her

treatments. I had noticed that it wasan excellent pre-shampoo conditioner

when I left it onto my dry hair after a

massage. Sometimes, I even leave it

on overnight, just wearing a turban to

protect my pillow. Then I wash my hair as usual.

When applied in this manner, the coconut oil inhibits the penetration

of water into the hair strands, which would otherwise cause the cuticle,

or surface of the hair shaft, to rise, making it prone to damage and

breakage. Furthermore, when applied as a pre-wash treatment, a

small amount of the coconut oil is able to penetrate deeper into the

hair shaft during the wash, when the hair fiber swells slightly.

This can also explain why so many rave about the oil's ability to

prevent the frizzies in humid weatherthis is another feature of its

hydrophobic activity. More porous types of hair may find coconut oil

particularly beneficial, such as African and chemically treated hair, aswell as those suffering with any type of scalp problems, including

    dandruff.

After that, I started to use it as a face and body moisturiser. It worked

well but it seems to take longer to apply than other products and one

needs to learn how to use it without splashing it all around!

    Coconut as food

We used to eat coconut slices on the beach when we were children:it was a treat. Coconut and coconut oil has been a dietary staple for

millennia. Its a powerful destroyer of all kinds of microbes, from viruses

to bacteria to protozoa, many of which can be harmful, and provides

your body with high quality fat that is critical for optimal health.

Around 50 percent of the fat in coconut oil is lauric acid, which is rarely

found in nature. In fact, coconut oil contains the most lauric acid of any

substance on Earth.Coconut oil is comprised of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) that

are easily digested and readily cross cell membranes. MCFAs are

  • 8/13/2019 SL November 2013

    29/6929

immediately converted by our liver into energy rather than being stored

as fat. Coconut oil is easy on our digestive system and does not

produce an insulin spike in our bloodstream, so for a quick energy

boost, we could simply eat a spoonful of coconut oil, or add it to our

    food.

To get more coconut oil into your diet, we can add it to our tea or

coffee, in lieu of a sweetener. It will also help improve absorption of

fat-soluble vitamins, so taking a spoonful of coconut oil along with our

daily vitamins may help boost their effectiveness.

Coconut oil is ideal for all sorts of cooking and baking, as it can

withstand higher temperatures without being damaged like many

    other oils.

Coconut Oil Can Replace Beauty and Personal Care Products

Makeup remover: Swipe on with a moist cotton ball. Wipe off with

clean cotton ball or wet washcloth.

Facial cleanser: Massage a dollop of coconut oil onto face and neck.

Wash off with wet washcloth and pat dry.

Body scrub: Mix equal parts coconut oil with organic cane sugar in

a glass jar. Use the scrub on dry skin prior to your shower or bath.

Facial scrub: Instead of sugar, mix coconut oil with baking soda, or

oatmeal with a dash of cinnamon, for a gentle facial scrub.

Shaving lotion: Apply a thin layer of coconut oil on area to be

shaved, and shave as usual. The lauric acid in the coconut oil will

also serve as an antiseptic for cuts that result from shaving.

Face and body moisturizer: You can use it either by itself, or add

your favorite essential oil. (Make sure youre using a high quality

essential oil that is safe for topical application.) One can also whip

the coconut oil with an electric mixer to produce a fluffy moisturizer

that stays soft and spreadable even in cooler temperatures.

When applied topically, coconut oil helps to reduce the appearance

of fine lines and wrinkles by helping to keep your connective tissues

strong and supple, and aids in exfoliating the outer layer of dead

skin cells, making our skin smoother.

Eye cream: Apply a thin layer of coconut oil around your eyes tosoften wrinkles and counteract thinning, sagging skin.

Cuticle cream: Simply rub a small amount of coconut oil around

your cuticles to soften dry areas.

Deodorant: Applying a small amount of coconut oil directly onto

your armpits can help keep odors at bay, courtesy of the oils

antibacterial properties. If you prefer, you can add a small amount

of baking soda, or make a homemade deodorant using coconut oil,

baking soda and arrow root powder.

Bath soak: Adding coconut oil to your bath can help moisturize dry

itchy skin. (Make sure to scrub your tub afterward to prevent

slipping!). Make sure the water is warmer than 76 degrees

Fahrenheit or 24.4 Celsius, otherwise the oil will turn to a solid.

Soap: Coconut oil is one of the base ingredients in many

    homemade

Lip balm: You can either apply a small amount of coconut oil, as is,

or make your own lip balm using coconut oil as one of the base

    ingredients.

Toothpaste: Mixed with baking soda, coconut oil can replace your

regular toothpaste. The baking soda will gently cleanse while the

coconut oils antibacterial action may help keep harmful bacteria in

    check.

Insect repellent: Mixing coconut oil with high quality essential oils

may help keep biting insects at bay when applied to exposed skin.

Effective choices include: peppermint, lemon balm, rosemary, tea

tree oil, neem, citronella (Java Citronella), geraniol, catnip oil and/or

    clear vanilla extract

Oral Health BenefitsAs mentioned above, coconut oil mixed with baking soda makes for

very simple and inexpensive, yet effective, toothpaste. Its also a great

alternative if you want a fluoride-free toothpaste but dont want to

spend the extra money, since they tend to cost more than most

    regular, fluoridated toothpaste brands.

Another oral health technique where coconut oil can be quite

beneficial is oil pulling. This technique may significantly reduced plaque

buildup, allowing to go longer between visits to the dental hygienist.

Oil pulling is a practice dating back thousands of years, having

  • 8/13/2019 SL November 2013

    33/69

originated with Ayurvedic medicine. When oil pulling is combined with

the antimicrobial power of coconut oil, it can be a very powerful health

tool. Sesame oil is traditionally recommended, but it has relatively high

concentration of omega-6 oils. Therefore, coconut oil is far superior,

    and it tastes better.

Oil pulling involves rinsing your mouth with the oil, much like you would

with a mouthwash. The oil is worked around your mouth by pushing,

pulling, and drawing it through your teeth for a period of 15 minutes.

If you want even better results, you can go for longer. This process

allows the oil to pull out bacteria, viruses, fungi and other debris. The

best time is in the morning before eating breakfast, but it can be done

at any time. When done, spit out the oil and rinse your mouth with

water. Avoid swallowing the oil as it will be loaded with bacteria andwhatever potential toxins and debris it has pulled out.

When done correctly, oil pulling has a significant cleansing, detoxifying

and healing affect, not only for your mouth and sinuses but for the rest

of your body as well. Candida and Streptococcus are common

residents in your mouth, and these germs and their toxic waste

products can contribute to plaque accumulation and tooth decay, in

addition to secondary infections and chronic inflammation throughoutyour body. Oil pulling may help lessen the overall toxic burden on your

immune system by preventing the spread of these organisms from

your mouth to the rest of your body, by way of your bloodstream.

    Coconut Oil to the Rescue

Coconut oil deserves a place in your medicine cabinet as well. For

example, coconut oil may be helpful in the treatment of:

Ear infections: Place a couple of drops into each ear canal. If thecoconut oil has solidified, put a small amount in a small container

and place the container into a larger cup of hot water.

Skin rashes and irritations, including chicken pox and shingles:

simply apply a small amount to the affected area.

Fungal- and/or yeast infections, such as athletes foot and ringworm.

For fungal infections, you can mix in a small amount of oregano oil

or tea tree oil. Cold sores: mix in a small amount of oregano oil, and apply at the

    first signs.

    33

    Bug bites and bee stings.

Frequent nosebleeds may be improved by regularly applying a small

amount to the inside of your nostrils

    Thrush.

Hemorrhoids and piles: you may add a small amount of lavender

essential oil for added healing power.

    Vaginal dryness.

Perineal massage: Expectant mothers can use it to massage the

perineum daily, starting about a month or so before their due date,

to help reduce chances of tearing and/or the need for an episiotomy.

Some Surprising Uses for Coconut Oil around the House

Last but not least, coconut oil can be used for a number of householdtasks otherwise relegated to more costly, and potentially toxic,

    alternatives.

1 Clean, condition and sanitize your wooden cutting board. Use

whenever the wood starts to look dry.

2 Use as a metal polish. Make sure to test a small area first.

3 Moisturize and soften leather goods as you would using other leather

    conditioners.

4 Lubricate squeaky hinges and sticky mechanisms with coconut oil

    instead of WD-40.

5 Clean and condition wooden furniture in lieu of furniture polish. Make

sure to test a small area first.

6 Lubricate your guitar strings (Rob thinks this probably will not work.)

7 Clean soap scum from your shower using a small dollop of coconut

oil on a damp cloth. Spray the area with white vinegar and wipe dry

with a lint-free cloth.8 Clean your hands and paint brushes with coconut oil after using oil-

based paints, in lieu of mineral spirits.

9 Clean and condition the inside of your car by adding a small amount

to a soft lint-free cloth. Rub in and wipe off excess.

10 Cleanse and add a glossy finish to indoor plants by wiping the

leaves with a small amount of coconut oil on a lint-free cloth.

11 Remove chewing gum from virtually any area, including carpets andhair.

Police MattersLast month, Shirley Life published

an SNT event without checking the

date. It was totally inaccurate and

    unprofessional. I do apologise

unreservedly to the readers. I took

a screenshot of the police website

where a two year old notice had not

    been removed or wrongly

uploaded. We are all fallible. Police

    is under incredible strain with

politicians, many of whom have never worked in a real job for a single

day in their lives, saying that The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) ischanging to put neighbourhood policing at the heart of what we do,

with more officers on the street providing a more flexible service to

meet the needs of Londons communities.

Please study with a critical eye the

    challenge that the political Mayors

Office for Policing and Crime launched

to the MPS. It is just a gimmicky ployby people who do not understand

what policing is about. It shows the

    utter contempt these incompetent

politicians feel for us, the pleb.

The Contact Points are another pie

in the sky. Our Contact Point, inShirley, is at Addington Village Police

    Station: Wednesday and Thursday

from 19:00 to 20:00 hours and

Saturday from 14:00 to 15:00 hours.

One hour is hardly a reasonable

period of time to provide the

professional service expected fromPolice to residents. There is no direct public transport from Shirley,

accessibility is a challenge and, above all, the location is badly lit .

The Shirley SNT operates from the Addington Village Police Station withall other SE and SW SNTs, 10 Teams from 10 wards.

The Shirley Team is now shown as

    having one Sergeant, one Officer

and one PCSO, the average number

    in Croydon.

A much smaller Team than we usedto have but we were promised that

    Neighbourhood Policing will be the

    foundation of frontline policing,

which will see 2,600 officers moved

    into Safer Neighbourhoods Teams

    across London.

Police Matters will be a regularcolumn in SL. Next month, we will

    look into Lord Stevenss Report.

Four of five Shirley Parades have one empty shop

    There is nothing sadder

than an empty shop in a

    parade. David Kern, British

    Chambers of Commerce

    chief economist, said: It's

clear that the UK upturn is

    gathering momentum.

    But surveys show that UK

    retail sales slowed for a

    second consecutive month

    last September.

    Retailers in Shirley are

nervous as we enter therun up to Christmas: many

fear that their businesses may soon fold.

Shopping habits have changed massively over the past 50 years due to

    the rise of online shopping, supermarkets and out-of-town retail parks;

this has had a negative impact on any High Street.

Even when the landlord is prepared to give a lower rent for an empty

unit, the cost of occupancy - due to the level of business rates - ispreventing these units from being occupied.

We do not have payday loans or charity shops in Shirley.

    We have two betting shops.

We have plenty of restaurants and take-aways but no real parking

facilities along Wickham Road. The double red lines do not allow any

relaxed shopping or eating. In the Library Parade, the 20 minutes

parking spaces and stinging fines are killing retailers. The new Croydonshopping centre will do the rest.

What do we need for Shirley residents to shop in Shirley? Ideas?

    Instructions:

Add the carrots and salt to the water in a medium saucepan. Bring

the water to boil and then reduce heat to medium-low, simmering forabout 5 minutes or until the carrots start to soften.

Drain water and add the remaining ingredients to the saucepan.

    Ginger Tea Bread

    This healthy, gluten-free

    bread has a cake-like texture

    with a tasty ginger kick.

    Ingredients:

    cup coconut flour

    6 organic eggs

teaspoon sea salt cup organic, real butter

    cup coconut milk

3 teaspoons fresh, organic ground ginger

    cup unsulphured blackstrap molasses

    2 ginger tea bags

Instructions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat.

Add the coconut milk and ginger tea bags; allow it to steep for 5

minutes while simmering, but not boiling.

    Set aside to cool.

Sieve the coconut flour and ginger in a large mixing bowl; add salt.

In another bowl, whisk the eggs and molasses together.

Gradually add the milk mixture, whisking continuously until it

becomes smooth and creamy. Next, add the wet ingredients to the

dry ingredients, stirring until a smooth batter forms.

Pour the batter into a greased 9 x 5 loaf pan and bake for 20

    minutes.

I am a disaster at baking and I had never heard of blackstrapmolasses. I learned that it is a sweetener that is actually good for you:

Unlike refined white sugar and corn syrup, which are stripped of

    virtually all nutrients except simple

    carbohydrates, or artificial sweeteners like

saccharine or aspartame, which not only

provide no useful nutrients but have been

shown to cause health problems in sensitive

individuals, blackstrap molasses is a healthful

    sweetener that contains significant amounts

of a variety of minerals that promote your

health. Blackstrap molasses is a very good

source of calcium. Calcium, one of the most

important minerals in the body, is involved in

a variety of physiological activities essential to life, including the ability

of the heart and other muscles to contract, blood clotting, theconduction of nerve impulses to and from the brain, regulation of

enzyme activity, and cell membrane function. Calcium is needed to

form and maintain strong bones and teeth during youth and

adolescence, and to help prevent the loss of bone that can occur

during menopause and as a result of rheumatoid arthritis. Calcium

binds to and removes toxins from the colon, thus reducing the risk of

colon cancer, and because it is involved in nerve conduction, may helpprevent migraine attacks. Two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses will

meet 11.8% of your daily needs for calcium.

    I bought blackstrap molasses fromwww.amazon.co.ukand I managed

to bake an acceptable Ginger Tea Bread. My Ginger Pancakes were

mediocre and the Orange and Ginger Glazed Carrots scrumptious.

I am learning a lot through researching different options and I hope you

Getting ready for ChristmasIts Goodbye to the long, bright, summer days when you needed

to stop down to get the right exposure, and Hello! to what mayturn out to be a winter wonderland with its different set of

    opportunities or maybe a washout?

As I have pointed out many times in the past, each picture should

convey a message and this is often provided by the surroundings.

A child posing with a Christmas hat on is fine; but gazing at a

Christmas tree, opening a present or handing one to a sibling,

parent or grandparent changes it from just for the record to awarm, human, family action event.

Similarly, a duck floating along in its winter plumage in Millers

Pond will make an excellent record of a duck floating along in its

winter plumage in Millers Pond; but include some excited

children leaning on a barrier and feeding the ducks and this

    transforms the scene completely.

The composition is so important and with a digital camera it iseasy to examine pics. as soon as they are taken. Be your own

critic, and improve on it immediately if the opportunity is still there.

    Now for the great indoors.

At Picture Partnership we offer these extra special, happy, studio

portraits of individuals, families, groups and family pets, too. Here

studio does not imply studied and formal for we are professionals

who raise photography to an art form and produce acclaimed

results to be treasured, not just for Christmas but to be retained

in the family and enjoyed for years to come. Why not come and

see our large display of varied subjects from babies to

weddings, people involved in sports, Halloween, on stage etc.

    READING

GROUPFOR ADULTSThe group will discuss The Painter of Silence by Georgina Harding on Thursday

    19 December from 6 to 7pm.

It is the early 1950s. A nameless man is found on the steps of the hospital in Iasi,Romania. He is deaf and mute, but a young nurse named Safta recognizes him from the

past and brings him paper and pencils so that he might draw. Gradually, memories

appear on the page: the man is Augustin, the cook's son at the manor house at Poiana,

where Safta was the privileged daughter. Born six months apart, they had a connection

that bypassed words, but while Augustin's world stayed the same size, Safta's expanded

to embrace languages, society, and a fleeting love one long, hot summer. But then came

war, and in its wake a brutal Stalinist regime, and nothing would remain the same.

Georgina Harding's kaleidoscopic new novel will appeal to readers of Anne Michaels,Michael Ondaatje, and Sandor Marai. It is as intense and submerging as rain, as steeped

in the horrors of our recent history as it is in the intimate passions of the human heart.

Epsom SaltEpsom salts, which are not really a salt at all but

a mineral compound of magnesium sulphate,

gets its named from a saline spring at Epsom in

Surrey, just around the corner from us. The salts

healing properties were discovered in the early

17th century by a farmer and, for years, theyve

been a trusted cure for aches and pains. Now,

thanks to celebrities, Epsom salts are fast

    becoming fashionable.

At a fraction of the price of designer potions - a tub costs 1.25 at

your local chemist - theyre being hailed as a miracle fix for everything

from greasy hair to a bloated stomach and lacklustre skin.

Both magnesium and sulfate are readily absorbed into the skin which

makes the health benefits readily accessible. Over 325 enzymes in the

body are regulated by magnesium which also helps reduce

inflammation, alleviates hardening of the arteries and improves muscle

and nerve function. Sulfates improve the rate at which nutrients are

absorbed and help to flush out toxins.

Here are just a few of the many wonderful benefits of Epsom salt that

    The Alternative Daily uncovered:

Ease Stress - If you are stressed, you may be deficient in

magnesium and you may have elevated adrenaline. When Epsom

salt is dissolved in warm water it is absorbed through the skin and

can naturally replenish lost magnesium. Magnesium helps the body

produce serotonin, which is a mood elevating chemical in the brain.

Magnesium also increases energy and stamina by encouraging theproduction of ATP the energy powerhouse of the cell. Bathing in

Epsom salt three times a week can help increase your energy,

improve your mood and reduce the negative impacts of elevated

adrenaline. Use 2 cups of Epsom salt in each full bath.

Eliminate Toxins - The sulphates in Epsom salt draw heavy metals

and other toxins from cells which can ease muscle pain and improve

cellular function. Adding Epsom salt to your bathwater pulls salt outof your body along with harmful toxins. Add 2 cups of Epsom salt to

  • 8/13/2019 SL November 2013

    65/6965

a warm bath once a week and soak for at least 10 minutes for

    detoxification.

Relieve Pain and Cramps in Muscles - If you have sore muscles,

migraine headaches or bronchial asthma, you may want to try an

Epsom salt bath. It can relieve both pain and inflammation. If you

are on your feet all day you may want to soak them in warm Epsom

salt. It can also help neutralize foot odour.

For Beauty - Try the following beauty treatments that use Epsom

    salt:

Exfoliating Facial Cleanser- Mix a small handful of Epsom salt with

a tablespoon of coconut oil and rub on your face. Rinse and pat dry.

Blackhead Remover- Add a teaspoon of salt and 3 drops of iodine

into half a cup of boiling water. Apply mixture to blackheads using a

    cotton ball.

Skin Mask- For normal to oily skin, mix 1 tablespoon of cognac, 1

organic egg, 1/4 cup of nonfat dry milk, the juice of one lemon and

half a teaspoon of epsom salt together. Dampen your skin and place

the mixture on your face avoiding the eye area. Allow the mask to

harden and set for about ten minutes rinse and pat dry.

Home and Garden - Use Epsom salt around your home and

    garden:

Clean Bathroom Tiles - Get those dim and dirty tiles in your

bathroom clean by mixing equal parts of Epsom salt with liquid dish

detergent. Scrub tiles with the mixture and rinse well.

Fertilize Plants - Plants need nutrients including magnesium and

sulfur in order to look their best. Sprinkling Epsom salt once a week

on houseplants, flowers and vegetables will provide them with thenitrogen, potassium and phosphorus they need to thrive.

Greener Grass - Magnesium is necessary for seed germination and

is vital for the production of chlorophyll which plants use to change

sunlight into food and helps the soil absorb phosphorus and

nitrogen. Sulfur also contributes to chlorophyll production and, as

mentioned above, makes nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium

found in fertilizers more effective. To help your grass be as healthy asit can, apply 3 pounds of Epsom Salts for every 1,250 square feet

    of lawn using a spreader.
