C’est pour moi un grand honneur de vous convier à la 44e saison de cet ensemble phare de la vie musicale de Montréal et à ma deuxième année à titre de directeur artistique. L’historique musical du Chœur St-Laurent est fort varié et cette saison riche en découvertes musicales ne sera pas en reste avec trois productions enlevantes.

Des cuivres qui résonnent sur l’éclatant Magnifi cat de Willcocks au jazz anglais stylisé de Rutter et de Todd, en passant par les riches motets allemands des grands compositeurs qui séjournèrent à Leipzig : ne ratez pas cette occasion unique d’entendre des œuvres extraordinaires.

It is my great privilege to welcome you to this 44th season, my second year as artistic director of this established Montreal ensemble. The musical history of St. Law-rence Choir is very varied and this season’s three thrilling productions, rich in musical discoveries, will not disappoint.

Suivant la tradition des grandes cathédrales anglaises et sous l’excellente gouverne du quintette BUZZ, ce programme nous permettra d’entendre plusieurs œuvres de l’avent et carols écrits pour cuivres, orgue, percussions et chœur. L’étincelant Magnifi cat de Jonathan Willcocks sera l’œuvre maîtresse dans laquelle les textes latins et la prose anglaise du 15e siècle se rencontrent, soutenus

par l’alternance enlevante des rythmes binaires et ternaires. Suivront Carols of the Nativity du compositeur canadien Stephen Chatman, qui propose des arrangements nouveaux,

uniques et réconfortants de ces airs si appréciés de la saison.

Following the great musical tradition of the English cathedrals and with accompaniment from the ever-dynamic BUZZ quintet, this concert presents several Advent works and other carols written for brass, organ, percussion and choir. Jonathan Willcocks’s sparkling Magnifi cat is the centerpiece, in

which Latin texts and 15th century English prose are supported by an exciting alternation of binary and ternary rhythms. In addition, Carols of the Nativity by Canadian composer Stephen Chatman

features some of the most comforting and appreciated tunes of the season.

Œuvres de Bach, Grieg, Homilius, Mendelssohn, Reger et Wagner

Motets à Leipzig fait partie d’un nouveau projet triennal voué à l’exploration du motet sous toutes ses formes. Généralement sacré et a cappella, le motet donne aux compositeurs l’occasion de jouer avec de riches harmonies chorales, souvent à huit voix, et de mettre en symbiose musique et théologie par une rhétorique musicale toujours proche du texte. Dans ce concert, nous partirons du Kapellmeister par excellence et maître du contrepoint Jean-Sébastien Bach pour découvrir plusieurs autres compositeurs qui furent infl uencés par cette ville musicale et universitaire, dont Mendelssohn, Homilius, Grieg, Reger et Wagner.

Motets in Leipzig is part of a new three-year project dedicated to the exploration of the motet in all its forms. Generally sacred and a cappella, the motet is an opportunity for composers to play with rich choral harmonies, often eight voices, and to combine music and theology through a text-led musical rhetoric. For this concert, we will begin with the ‘Kapellmeister’ and quintessential master of counterpoint, Johann Sebastian Bach, moving on to discover several other composers who were infl uenced by this musical and collegial city, namely Mendelssohn, Homilius, Grieg, Wagner and Reger.

Mass in Blue de Will Todd est une version dynamisée de la messe latine pour chœur à quatre voix mixtes, soprano solo et ensemble jazz. Dans ce mélange génial de groove jazz

et d’écriture chorale claire et solide s’entrelacent le piano solo et la voix de la soprano solo en une délicieuse tapisserie musicale. Mass in Blue a été exécutée des centaines

de fois dans le monde entier depuis sa création en 2003.

Will Todd’s Mass in Blue is an upbeat setting of the Latin mass for SATB choir, soprano solo and jazz ensemble. It is a brilliant blend of driving jazz grooves and clear, strong

choral writing against which the solo piano and solo soprano voice weave a delightful aural tapestry. Mass in Blue has been performed hundreds of times

around the world since its 2003 premiere.

PHILIPPE BOURQUE est un musicien polyvalent et passionné de musique chorale. Il enseigne depuis septembre 2010 au Cégep Vanier, où il est chef des chœurs et professeur de formation auditive. Il a travaillé avec les chœurs de l’École de musique Vincent-d’Indy et les Jeunes chanteurs de l’école F.A.C.E., en plus d’enseigner la direction en privé et d’être invité régulièrement comme juge ou clinicien à divers festivals musicaux au pays et à l’étranger.

Philippe Bourque assure depuis 2006 la direction et la programmation musicale et liturgique du chœur et ensemble instrumental de l’église protestante de Terrebonne-Mascouche aux célébrations dominicales. Il a également été directeur artistique du Chœur du Musée d’art de Joliette (2008-2014), des Petits Chanteurs de la cathédrale (2005-2007), du groupe vocal Chœur en Jazz (2006-2009) et du chœur Simply Sweetly (aujourd’hui Les Muses Chorale) de l’université McGill (2007-2011).

PHILIPPE BOURQUE is a versatile and passionate musician of choral music. He has been teaching at Vanier College since 2010 as choir master and aural training instructor. He has also worked with the choir of the Vincent-d’Indy music school and the F.A.C.E. Young Singers. He gives private lessons in conducting and is regularly invited as a jury member or clinician to various festivals both in Canada and abroad.

Since 2006, Philippe Bourque has directed the choir and instrumental ensemble of the Protestant Church of Terrebonne-Mascouche, overseeing the musical and liturgical programming for the church’s Sunday celebrations. He was also artistic director of the Chœur du Musée d’art de Joliette (2008-2014), the Petits Chanteurs de la Cathédrale (2005-2007), the Chœur en Jazz vocalists (2006-2009) and McGill’s Simply Sweetly (now Les Muses Chorale, 2007-2011).

LE CHŒUR ST-LAURENT, dirigé par Philippe Bourque, est un ensemble à voix mixtes qui présente des œuvres du répertoire classique de même que des œuvres contempo-

raines de compositeurs du Canada et d’ailleurs. En plus des concerts de ses saisons régulières, le chœur s’est produit dans le cadre du Festival de Lanaudière, du Festival Montréal en lumière et du Festival Bach de Montréal. Il a également travaillé en collaboration avec les Cantata Singers of

Ottawa, l’Institut choral de Montréal, le Collège Vanier et le Chœur du Musée d’Art de Joliette.

Créé en 1972 par lwan Edwards, le Chœur St-Laurent s’est produit régulièrement pendant près de 25 ans en tant que principale composante du Chœur de l’Orchestre symphonique

de Montréal, participant avec lui à de nombreux enregistrements, ainsi qu’à des concerts à Montréal, Toronto, Ottawa, Philadelphie, Saratoga Springs et New York.

Le Chœur St-Laurent est fi er d’avoir présenté des œuvres de compositeurs canadiens tels que Victor Davies, Ruth Watson Henderson, Jacques Hétu, Jean Laplante, Pierre Mercure,

Donald Patriquin, Imant Raminsh, Bruce Ruddell, Patrick Wedd, Gilles Tremblay (création d’Avec), Alain Gagnon (création canadienne de Chansons d’Orient en 2011), Ivo Antognini

(création de Brink of Eternity en 2011) et Petros Shoujounian (création de Messe et Requiem en 2015).

ST. LAWRENCE CHOIR, a mixed-voice ensemble under the direction of Philippe Bourque, performs music from the classical choral repertoire as well as contemporary works by Canadian and other composers. In addition to performing in its subscription season

concerts, the Choir has appeared at the International Music Festival of Lanaudière, the Fes-tival Montréal en lumière and the Montreal Bach Festival. It has also worked on collaborative

projects with the Cantata Singers of Ottawa, the Montreal Choral Institute, Vanier College and the Chœur du Musée d’Arts de Joliette.

Founded in 1972 by Iwan Edwards, St. Lawrence Choir performed for many years with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as the principal component of the MSO chorus, participating

in numerous concerts and recordings in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Saratoga Springs and New York.

St. Lawrence Choir is proud to have presented works by Canadian composers such as Victor Davies, Ruth Watson Henderson, Jacques Hétu, Jean Laplante, Pierre Mercure,
