Island. Die Insel aus Feuer und Eis. Schroffer Fels, weiches Wasser. Strahlendes Licht, tiefe Schatten. Gegensätze, die sich anziehen. Eine Landschaft, die inspiriert und Kreativität geradezu herausfordert. Geburtsstätte des Programms 2750 Sóley. Ein Stuhl, der zur Designikone wurde. Das Gegensatzpaar von Sonne und Mond findet sich in seinen Formen wieder – in dem kreisrunden Sitz und der sichelförmigen Rücken­lehne. Ganz im Sinne der Naturbezogenheit, die in Island überall gegenwärtig ist. Wörtlich übersetzt bedeutet Sóley "Sonneninsel", so wie man dort auch die Butterblume nennt.

IJsland. Het land van contrasten waar ijs en vuur samen komen. Steile rotsen, rustige meren. Stralende zon, donkere schaduwen. Tegenpolen trekken elkaar aan. De landschappen vormen een rijke bron aan inspi­ratie en stimuleren de creativiteit. Dit is geboorteplaats van serie 2750 Sóley. Een klapstoel die ondertussen het status van een designklassieker verworven heeft. De tegenstellingen tussen zon en maan weerspiegelen zich ook in het design – in de ronde vorm van de zitting en in de sikkelvormige rugleuning. In overeenstemming met de diepe verbondenheid met de natuur, een levens­houding die diep verworteld is in de IJslandse cultuur. Letterlijk vertaald betekent Sóley het "eiland van de zon", zo noemen de IJslanders ook de boterbloem.

L’Islande. Île de contrastes où la glace côtoie le feu. Des rochers escarpés, des lacs miroirs aux eaux paisibles. Un soleil étincelant, des ombres ténébreuses. Ici, c’est une terre d’extrêmes. Ces paysages sont une riche source d’inspiration stimulant la créativité. Ceci est le berceau de la série 2750 Sóley. Un siège pliant ayant mérité le qualificatif de classique iconique du design. Le couple d’extrêmes que sont le soleil et la lune se retrouve dans ses formes – dans le rond de l’assise et dans la faucille du dossier. Un siège conçu en sym­biose avec la nature, philosophie typique de l’Islande. Sóley se traduit littéralement par " île du soleil", c’est également le nom donné aux fleurs boutons d’or en Islande.

Iceland. An island full of contrasts where fire coexists with ice. Precipitous cliffs with calm waters. Bright lights with dark shadows. Opposites attract, as the saying goes. These landscapes are a rich source for inspiration and a haven for creative work. The birthplace of series 2750 Sóley. A folding chair that achieved and earned the status of a design classic. The pair of opposites, consisting of sun and moon, is united into the design aesthetics – reflected in the circular seat and the lunate back. Echoing the deep affinity with nature, a philosophy embedded in Icelandic culture. Sóley literally t ranslates as "Island of the sun", and it is what buttercups are affectionately called.

Valdimar Harðarson wurde 1951 in Reykjavík geboren. Nur 2 Jahre nach erfolgreichem Abschluss seines Architekturstudiums an der Universität Lund in Schweden gründete er 1982 in seiner Heimatstadt mit Kollegen sein eigenes Studio. Für die Entwürfe öffentlicher Gebäude Islands und privater Residenzen wurden er und sein Team mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Im ASK arkitektar widmete sich Harðarson auch dem Design ausgefallener Möbel.

Die Erfolgsgeschichte des Sóley begann 1983, als sich der junge Harðarson in Köln mit Dieter Kusch traf und ihm den Prototypen zeigte. Spontaner Kommentar: „Was für ein schöner Stuhl! Man sieht ihm gar nicht an, dass es ein Klappstuhl ist. Er hat das Zeug, ein Klassiker zu werden.“ Wenig später wurde das Programm 2750 Sóley realisiert.

Valdimar Harðarson werd in 1951 in Reykjavik geboren. Slechts twee jaar na het behalen van zijn architecten­diploma aan de Universiteit van Lund in Zweden richtte hij in 1982 samen met z’n collega’s zijn eigen architec­tenbureau op in zijn geboortestad. Voor hun ontwerpen van openbare gebouwen in IJsland en particuliere woningen sleepten hij en z’n team verschillende prijzen in de wacht. Bij ASK arkitektar wijdde hij zich aan het design van buitengewone meubelstukken.

Het succes van Sóley begon in 1983 toen een jonge Harðarson Dieter Kusch in Keulen ontmoette en hem een prototype van zijn stoel toonde. Dieter Kusch ant­woordde spontaan: “Wat een mooie stoel en boven­ dien de eerste die ik ooit gezien heb die er niet als een klapstoel uitziet. Wij zorgen ervoor dat het een klassieker wordt”. Kort daarop werd de serie 2750 Sóley gelanceerd.

Valdimar Harðarson est né en 1951 à Reykjavik. Deux années seulement après avoir obtenu son diplôme d’architecte à l’Université de Lund en Suède, il fondait en 1982 son propre bureau d’architecture avec des collègues dans sa ville natale. Pour leurs conceptions de collectivités publiques ainsi que pour leurs résidences privées, lui et son équipe ont remporté plusieurs prix prestigieux. C’est au sein d’ASK arkitektar, qu’Harðarson commença à se dévouer au design de sièges hors du commun.

Le succès de Sóley débuta en 1983 lorsqu’un jeune Harðarson recontra Dieter Kusch à Cologne pour lui montrer son prototype. Dieter Kusch répondit: «Voilà un beau design et c’est le premier siège pliant que j’ai jamais vu qui n’a pas l’air d’en être un. Nous en faisons un classique du design.» Peu de temps après, la série 2750 Sóley fut lancée sur le marché mondial.

Valdimar Harðarson was born in Reykjavik in 1951. Only two years after having completed his architectural studies at Lund University in Sweden, he founded his own architect’s office with his colleagues in his home town in 1982. For their designs of public buildings in Iceland and private residences, he and his team won several awards. At ASK Arkitektar, Harðarson devoted himself to out of the ordinary furniture designs.

Sóley’s success story began in 1983 when young Harðarson met Dieter Kusch in Cologne and showed him the prototype of the chair. Mr Kusch said: “This is a beautiful chair and the first one I have seen that is foldable without it being obvious. We will make this chair a classic”. Series 2750 Sóley was launched shortly thereafter.

Back then, his daring design received great acclaim from both architects and design enthusiasts. Sóley scooped the Roscoe Award in the USA and two Good Design Awards in Japan, won the title "Furniture of the Year 1984", and was subsequently honoured by the Design­Center Stuttgart.

The construction principle of this folding chair is as easy as proverbial pie: less is more! The circles of the seat and the back and the straight lines of the frame are the twin pillars onto which Sóley’s geometry is founded. A minimalist design holding a great appeal. These are opposite design features that attract; contrasts so typical of Iceland’s nature.

Schon damals überraschte das gewagte Design die Architektur­ und Designszene. Sóley errang den Roscoe Award in den USA, zwei Good Design Preise aus Japan, war 1984 "Möbel des Jahres" und wurde später auch vom Design­Center Stuttgart ausgezeichnet.

Die Konstruktion dieses Klappstuhls richtet sich nach einem einfachen Prinzip: Weniger ist mehr! Sóley erzielt seine hohe Wirkung mit nur 2 formalen Elementen: dem Kreis bei Sitzfläche und Rücken­ lehne, der Geraden beim Gestell. Allein diese Formen bestimmen die Geometrie. Sie erobern das Auge wie ein Signal. Sie sind die Gegensätze, die sich anziehen. So, wie die Naturgewalten Islands.

Het gewaagde design werd destijds meteen door architecten en designfans toegejuicht en met bijval ontvangen. Sóley won de Roscoe Award in de VS, twee Good Design Awards in Japan, werd uitgeroepen tot "Meubel van het jaar 1984" en werd gehuldigd door het Design­Center Stuttgart.

Het constructieprincipe van deze klapstoel berust op eenvoud, overeenkomstig het motto: minder is meer! Sóley brengt zijn esthetische natuur tot uitdrukking in de synthese van 2 vormen: de geometrie van deze klapstoel wordt bepaald door de ronde vormen van de zitting en de rugleuning die met de rechte lijnen van het frame versmelten. Een contrastrijk design met een grote aantrekkingskracht, net zoals de natuur van IJsland.

À l’époque, ce design audacieux a été salué par les acclamations des architectes et des afficionados du design. Sóley remporta le Roscoe Award aux États­Unis, deux Good Design Awards au Japon, a été nommé "Meuble de l’année 1984", et distingué par le Design­Center Stuttgart.

La construction de ce siège pliant se repose sur le principe de la simplicité: Quand moins veut dire plus! Les qualités esthétiques de Sóley trouvent leur expression dans la synthèse de 2 formes: le rond de l’assise et du dossier ainsi que la droite du piétement présentent les deux piliers sur lesquels se repose la géométrie de cette série.
