    ARLINGTON, Texas Rhino

Page of Dade City, Fla., made crit-

ical shots when he needed them

most to nip Bill ONeill of

    Southampton, Pa., in the PBA

    Experience Showdown at the

    International Training and

    Research Center.

Page, in a field of five Lumber

Liquidators PBA Tour stars and a

    lone United States Bowling

    Congress Sport Bowling league

    member, won an abbreviated five-

frame 108-104 decision overONeill in a PBA Tour special

event that aired on ESPN. It took

clutch conversions of a 1-3-9 spare

in the first frame and a 2-4-7 in the

third to edge ONeill, whose failure

    to convert the 1-2-4-10 washout

proved to be his Achilles heel.

    The Showdown was a first-of-its-

    kind contest featuring five PBA

    Experience lane condition champi-

    ons (Norm Duke, Cheetah pattern;

    Mike DeVaney, Scorpion; Jack

    Jurek, Shark; ONeill, Chameleon,

and Page, Viper) along with Kevin

    Reuer, a USBC Sport Bowling

    league member from Hoffman

Estates, Ill. Reuer, who bowls in

the Beverly Lanes Sport League in

    Arlington Heights, Ill., won a

national competition among thou-sands of USBC PBA Experience

League bowlers for the right to

    bowl against the PBA stars.

    The made-for-television event

required all six players to bowl a

single frame on each of the five

    animal patterns and then repeat

that process to complete a 10-frame

game. After one full round, the

field was trimmed to the two high-

est scores for a five-frame champi-

onship game, also across all five

    patterns. In sequence, players

bowled one frame each on the

    Shark, Chameleon, Viper, Scorpion

    and Cheetah patterns.

    Reuer started the qualifying

round with a 173. Duke followed

with a 213. Page, bowling third,

looked like he was in immediatetrouble, leaving the 3-6-7-10 on his

first shot on the Shark lane. He

converted that spare, but he missed

    a 2-7 left-side baby split in the

    second frame on the Chameleon

lane. Page then rallied to salvage a

223, putting together a string of

four strikes in his second five-

    frame round.

After a spare in his opening

    frame, ONeill threw six consecu-

tive strikes and then struck out in

the 10th frame on the Cheetah pat-

    tern for a 258 game.

    That meant Jurek or DeVaney

needed to top Pages 223 to remain

    in title contention. Jurek finished

with a 197 and DeVaney, who start-

ed with four strikes, left a big

four split on his second trip to theChameleon lane to stall his bid.

Needing a strike on his first shot in

the 10th frame to knock out Page,

DeVaney left a 6 pin and finished

    with a 217.

    In the finale, ONeill again

jumped into the lead with a double,

but the washout in the fourth

frame proved to be the difference

    as Page alternated spares and

    strikes for his four-pin victory.

I got pretty fortunate that Bill

made a bad shot and I was able to

capitalize. It was kind of a lucky

draw the way the lanes were set up

because I struggled the whole show

    with the Shark, Page said.

It was really a challenge chang-

ing angles on every lane, he

added. I was lucky to throw thatfour-bagger in the first round just to

give myself a chance, and even

then I was able to dodge a couple of

    bullets from Duke and DeVaney.

For his victory, Page collected a

    $25,000 first prize.

ons University of Nebraska-Lincolnin the best of 7 games to win the

    2010 National Collegiate Womens

    Bowling Championship in a contest

    that went the distance.

    Competing in the event were:

    Arkansas State, Central Missouri,

    Delaware State, Fairleigh Dickinson,

    Maryland Eastern Shore, New Jersey

    City University, and Vanderbuilt.

After ten matches the battle was

down to the final four, Arkansas,

FDU, Nebraska and NJCU who were

    hosting the championships at

    Brunswick Zone Carolier Lanes in

North Brunswick, NJ. This was the

first time that the event contested in

New Jersey and made for quite thecheering sections when the two New Jersey teams

went to battle in the final four where NJCU fell to FDU

    before Nebraska beat Arkansas.

The championship match as televised on ESPN went

the limit and when all seven games were finished it

was FDU taking home the NCAA 2010 Championship

trophy. FDU Coach Mike LoPresti said, I had a con-

versation with my assistant Lisa Friscioni, and I asked

her, Do you believe this match? Nobody is throwing

opens. Everyone is throwing doubles when they need

doubles. The momentum swings were unbelievable.

LoPresti went on to say, It was a fantastic match to

coach. There was a real chess game going on between

the coaches in terms of how you move your players,

what equipment you use, and motivating players to

make shots under pressure. Both teams were well-pre-

pared today, thats for sure. The FDU Knights Danielle McEwan of Stony Point,

NY, a freshman, earned the most outstanding player titleand commented on her not striking in the first two

games she said, In the beginning, I didnt have a very

good line. It took me a couple of frames to get the nerves

out. I made some adjustments and I figured it out.

"Often, the most extraordinary opportunities are hidden among the

seemingly insignificant events of life. If we do not pay attention to these

events, we can easily miss the opportunities."

    -Jim Rohn

    Every bowler needs some

    help now and then.

Here are some short tips from

    some of the best.

    All instructors urge bowlers

to set up properly by purchasing

    their own personally designed

    equipment, balls and shoes inparticular.

    Paula Carter, elected to the

    Womens International Bowling

Congress Hall of Fame, and a

    longtime instructor and pro

shop owner, said, If a bowler is

    serious, rather than go through

    stages of upgrading equipment,

he or she should use the best and

be taught how to use it. I would

    even encourage a relaxed finger-

tip grip for the first ball, as

    opposed to a conventional grip,

    Once bowlers learn that the

thumb goes all the way into the

ball and theres actually more of

the hand on the ball with a fin-gertip, its easier for them to

    adapt.

    Bill Spigner, a pro champ

    who instructs regularly, pointed

    out, A bowler, when fitted

properly, should be able to han-

dle a heavier ball than that they

pick up off the rack. The ball is

an extension of the hand, and

once timing is achieved, the ball

    will actually feel lighter.

Pete Weber, an all time lead-

ing money winner on the pro

    tour, advised, There are

bowlers who get into slumps and

wont ask for help. They think

everything will be okay if they

practice. But when youre in a

    slump and youre doing some-

    thing over and over, youre

    practicing throwing the ball

    badly every shot. If bowlers

would ask for help from some

coach, theyd learn quicker, butI think theyre too shy to ask.

    Jerry Edwards, who lists jun-

    ior, collegiate and pro champi-

    onships on her record and

    coached Team USA and con-

    ducts seminars and clinics,

warned that in team play theres

a new type of gamesmanship, a

subtle form of needling. It can

end up being a kind of head

    game.

    For instance you might hear

    someone tell a left-handed

bowler, I like what you do with

    your right arm. That gentle

    prodding is obviously meant to

get you off main game focus.Or a bowler might say, So,

do you breathe in or out when

    you bowl?

    Edwards concluded, You

have to realize those things can

happen, and not let them affect

your game. They can be discon-

certing if youre not ready for

    them. Bowling isnt a reactive

    sport where you are responding

    physically to what is happening.

However, you do have to be

ready to handle the mental gym-

nastics that can go on, and still

    continue to play your game.

    THE EMPIRE STATE GAMES

    ARE BACK!

    Bowlers will once again have

    the opportunity to compete in

    New Yorks premiere amateur

    sporting event, The Empire State

    Games. After a one-year hiatus

due to the state budget woes, the

    Games are back and scheduled

    for July 21-25 in Buffalo.

    The bowling competition, a

    scratch event (no handicap), will

be held at Transit Lanes in

Williamsville. The Games, start-ed in 1978, are the largest state

    funded athletic event in the

    United States. Thousands of ath-

    letes will compete in various

    sports including bowling.

A bowler must first compete at

    the regional level before advanc-

ing to the finals in Williamsville.

    Regional competition will be

held in six areas of the state

    beginning in May. The Regional

    Competition centers are:

    Western Region -AMF Thruway

    Lanes, Cheektowaga; Central

    Region Brandywine Bowl,

    Binghamton; Adirondack

    Region Boulevard Bowl,Schenectady; Hudson Valley

    Region - Holiday Lanes,

    Wappingers Falls; New York

    City Region Rabs Country

    Lanes, Staten Island; Long

    Island Region - North Levittown

    Lanes, Levittown. Bowlers must

compete in the region where they

reside and only in one division

(Open OR Masters). Entry fee is

    $40.00 (Open or Masters

    Division).

    Regional competition in the

    Open Division will begin with

    athletes bowling six games.

    After the completion of six

games, the field will be cut to a

maximum of 16 men and 16

    women (minimum of six men

and six women) who will bowl

    another four games. The field

will then be cut to the top six

men and the top six women based

on a ten game total. These six

men and women will then com-

pete in a round robin match play

with a position round. The top

three male bowlers and the top

    three female bowlers will

advance to the finals of the bowl-ing competition at the 2010

    Empire State Games to represent

their region as a team. Past or

    current members of a profession-

al bowlers group are not eligible

to compete in the Open Division.

    There is also a Masters

    Division (for competitors 50

years and older). The Masters is

    similar to the Open Competition

but with fewer games and fol-

lows the format of other senior

    competition in the Games. Past

    members of a professional

bowlers group are eligible in the

    Masters Division provided they

have not competed as a profes-sional in the previous three years.

    To enter the regional competi-

    tion, go to

Hicks had made the LIGBT finals

many times but at East Meadow he

    finally broke through and took

home the trophy and the big money.

But his victory didnt come easy as

the final shootout ended in a 204 tie

    with high qualifier Jim Wallace,

Hicksville, NY (926). It took two

9/10th frame roll-offs to break the

tie but a nasty 7-10 blowout split

ended Wallaces bid for his first

    LIGBT title. Wallace earned $550

for second and Chun Bae of

    Cedarhurst, NY finished third (198)

    and won $300.

    The 210 and under handicap

event had another great turnout of

82 bowlers with the top 20 advanc-

ing to the finals. It took a 626

    series, including handicap and

bonus pins to advance. All finalists

    were guaranteed a minimum of

    $100, $40 more than the $60 entry

    fee.

David Reeds road to the finals

started with a 650 qualifying series

which put him in 7th place. In the

    finals David almost got eliminated

in Round 2 as he rolled a 199 hand-

icap game which was the cut. He

also was the cut score in Round 3

    with a 218 handicap game.

But in the Shootout David took

    control early and shot a 220 (198

    scratch) to defeated his nearest

    competitor by 23 pins. Finishing

second was Jose Torres of Brooklyn

who doesnt put fingers in the ball.

    Jose shot a 197 and earned $300.

Finishing third was Alex Ware of

Brooklyn who bowled well all day

    and earned $250.
