Dr. roger and Joyce Coffey relax and entertain in their 6,000-square-foot Lake ida home.

Chris and Johnna Thor-son took to the exterior of their Detroit Lakes home since the inside was new when they moved into it.

There is a wide variety of fl owers, trees and shrubs that can be planted in gardens to attract birds and but-terfl ies.

The new trend in colors this year is something cool with a fl are.

Decks can be a lot of main-tenance, so maybe a patio is the answer to this summer’s backyard entertainment loca-tion.

Don’t forget to vacuum un-der the bed, shake out the welcome mat and fi nd other spring cleaning tips.

With a little over 6,000 square feet of space, the Lake Ida home of Dr. Roger and Joyce Coffey was built for comfort. The log cabin-style home has an open air feel, with vaulted ceilings and an abundance of windows overlooking the lake and surrounding waterways. The rustic feel of the décor is carried throughout the cabin, which includes a partial basement and two lofts above the main floor. The Coffeys have added on to their home twice since they first moved in; the second addition, which encompasses over 1,000 square feet, was added just this past year. The new addition includes a spacious kitchen, with polished

granite countertops from Agassiz Granite; slate tile and a gas-burning stone fireplace from I’ll Tile & Stone; as well as pine cabin-etry and the latest in kitch-en appliances from North Country Kitchens. It also has floor heating, Joyce Coffeey said. The kitchen appliances provide the only really modern note in the rustic-style home. A drawer-style microwave and cooktop stove provide maximum convenience for food prepa-ration. “I would recommend it for anybody,” said Roger Coffey of the microwave drawer. “I love it,” Joyce agreed. A center island includes a two-drawer dishwasher, compactor, wine refrigera-tor and sink; it’s surround-ed by a bar-style kitchen counter that comfortably seats 10 people. In fact, Joyce says, the only time they really use their dining room table is for large-scale gatherings such as holiday dinners for

family and friends. The dining room is centrally located, and leads into a large living room with a gas fireplace, entertainment center and bar area. There is also an exercise room in the loft above the bar. Another loft is located between the kitchen and dining room, and includes two bedrooms as well as a bathroom and a small living area for guests staying there. It’s ideal for when their children visit, Joyce said, because it allows them to have some privacy. A small basement is located below the living area, and includes two more bed-rooms, Joyce said. The master bedroom adjoins the living area, and includes its own bathroom (there is also a bathroom in the new addition). “The living room is where we spend most of our time,” Joyce said. With its wood-burning fireplace and windows covering the south wall almost from floor to ceiling, allowing the winter sun to stream in full force, the room is kept at a comfortable temperature year round. “It’s usually at about 80 degrees in the winter time,” Roger said, noting that the combination of sunlight and heat from the fireplace makes it unnecessary to

Also, three skylights in the ceiling mean that “we don’t use the lights a lot in here,” he said. “I’ve never changed a bulb in here since it (the first addition) was built in 1996,” Roger added. The home also includes a full deck on three sides and two large garages, though with only two vehi-cles to fill them, the space is used for other things, Joyce said.

When Chris and Johnna Thorson purchased their Detroit Lakes home in 2005, they didn’t have to do a lot of interior renovations.

The house that was built in 1964 received exten-sive damage in a 2004 fire, something that forced the previous owners to completely remodel the inside.

And when the Thorsons came in a year later, all they wanted to focus on was the exterior of the 3,200-square foot home and the detached 24-by-24-foot garage.

“We just compromised until we both could live with it.”

The finishing

They lived in the five-bedroom home for a few years before they began the renovations, and what pushed them to do it in 2008 were some city street improve-ment projects already under way during that time.

“It was quite a mess for a while when the street was ripped up,” Johnna said.

But Chris added that “it made the most sense to rearrange the driveway location” at the same time.

With his professional experi-ence in construction, the Ulteig engineer was able to put his skills to the test on his own home by attaching the garage, expanding it and rearranging the walkway.

In addition to the practical changes and the convenience those changes now offer, the Thorsons added some contempo-rary touches they designed them-selves to house. “People driving by would just stop,” Johnna said, adding that she was surprised at the response she received from people and their reaction about the new look of the house. Before, the driveway would go all the way down the lower level of the house reaching up to one of the two front doors. Now the expanded driveway is on the side going up to the now 900-square foot attached garage. Among the changes the Thor-sons made were adding stone work, an archway to the porch, the curved walkway up to the door, eliminating one of two front entrances and remodeling the backyard. But like in most decisions couples make, there were some disagreements — the main one was the columns of the archway: Chris wanted it white, while Johnna wanted it the tan color that it is now. “We just compromised until

• An ARXX ICF wall system is energy efficient, struc-turally tough, comfortable, quiet and green and cen be constructed quickly and cost effectively.

• Key attributes: — Can susbtantially save on heating and cooling costs. — High contributor to LEED credits. — Fire, hurricane, earthquake, tornado, blast, mold, mildew, termite and pest resistant. — Better indoor air quality, temperature control and higher sound expression. — Simpler, faster and lower cost build. — 25% more strength than typical concrete wall systems.• Houses built with ICF exterior walls typically require 44% less energy to heat and 32% less energy

to cool than comparable frame houses.

• A different and better way to build. The energy effectiveness of an ARXX wall is attributable to:

— Continuous R-value; — Reduced air infiltration; and — Thermal mass moderation.• Quite simply, no amount of blown-in, rigid or

fiberglass batt insulation can address the thermal bridging caused by lower R-value conventional wood framing.

• Over half the energy loss of a conventional wood frame home is due to unwanted air infil-tration and heat loss through the wall assem-bly.

— Air filtration is typically .5 ACH (air changes per hour) which means that every hour half of the air volume of the house is exchanged for outside air that needs to be heated or cooled.

— Air infiltration of ICF wall assemblies are typically .01 ACH.

• Studies by the US Department of Energy con-firm that concrete mass in exterior walls reduc-es anual energy cost in buildings.

— The ICF concrete core offers the characteristic thermal mass qualities of heat absorption and thermal lag.

we both could live with it,” Chris said. He also wanted some sunshades on the windows, while Johnna disagreed with the idea. Once again, she won. But that doesn’t mean Chris wasn’t happy with the outcome. “I thought it seemed out of place … didn’t seem to make much sense,” Johnna said. “She was right,” Chris responded, with a smile. The renovations included major landscaping that includes a garden area that the couple will finish up this year when the weather allows. All in all, it took about a year to finish up the house, with the winter months in between, and with Johnna working from home, it was difficult at times. “It was a challenge to try to run a daycare in the midst of all the construction,” she said. There were also times they regretted even start-ing, the couple agreed. But in the end, it was all worth it. The couple bought the house that’s located in the heart of Detroit Lakes on Langford Street five years ago and they plan to stay for years to come.

what nature used to provide,” Marion Jacobson said. Jacobson is a part of the Lake Park Garden Club. There is also a Lakes Area Garden Club that meets in Detroit Lakes. “It is really important that people plant the native growing plants, and there are many beautiful ones for any site, sun or shade,” Jacobson said. “Gardeners these later years have enjoyed planting ‘new’ plants from all over the world, never real-izing that the chances are very good that the insects and birds from our area will not use them for their food supply.” She said a useful Internet site for gar-dening is motherearthnews.com. It con-tains information on everything from the benefits to weeds to the performance of

flowers, organic gardening to beneficial insects. According to additional Internet search-es: n Dried daisy seed heads attract finch-es, sparrows, cardinals, and towhees. n Birds love zinnias for their seeds. They will also entice many species of but-terflies. n Hummingbirds are especially drawn to the color red. They check out every speck of red in the landscape. Plant red flowers then provide other flowers that produce nectar. Some of the best flowers for hummingbirds are old-fashioned fuch-sias, coral bells, bee balm, hybiscus and petunias n Birds love sunflowers.

n Ultimately, incorporate flowers that are native to the area. A combination of golden-rods and asters is just one example. n Other examples of plants birds are attracted to include purple coneflowers, snapdragons, cosmos, cornflower, coreopsis, blazing star, sideoats grama, switch grass, hackberry, dogwood and hawthorn. n Other examples of plants hummingbirds enjoy are columbine, jewelweed, native phlox, native honeysuckle, hollyhock, begonia, dahl-ia, impatients, hibiscus, glads, foxglove, fuch-sia and gaillardia. n Some tips for attracting butterflies includes planting nectar-producing plants like milkweed, azalea, goldenrod, black-eyed susan, zinnia, aster, phlox, Japanese honey-suckle and ironweed. Lilacs are good shrubs to plant for butterflies as well. Butterflies are also attracted to color — groups of colors are better than one single flower — and sunlight — make sure the flowers are in the direct sunlight.

There are many colors and plants to consider when planting for insects and birds.

Cooler tones with bright POPS

Interior designer Marga Ybarra says taupes, grays, blues and other cool colors are modern, yet classy. It’s the accents that make the room.

Story: Riham Reshir

More and more color trends are moving toward cooler tones with pops of bright colors here and there.

Taupes, grays, soft blues and cool palettes are modern but still classy, said Floor-to-Ceil-ing Designer Marga Ybarra.

For the past few years, the colors many chose in their homes represented nature in earthy tones like tans, browns and greens.

Now more of the metallics and grays that represent “a stormy day outside,” are the top choices, Ybarra said.

Although the modern colors sound gloomy or dull, coordinating them with the right furni-ture, accessories and artwork can make a huge difference.

“Without thinking of the rest of the room, it’ll look cold and sterile,” Ybarra said.

Visualizing the whole picture is important when planning the look of a room, but it’s also difficult before all of the pieces are put togeth-er.

Ybarra usually encourages homeowners to bring in just anything that would give her an idea of what the style of the room is. Items like pillow shams, comforters or window treat-ments can help designers pick just the right colors.

And it’s not just the fabrics that can soften up a room. Furniture pieces make a powerful impact.

A cherry wood dining room set would sure brighten up gray walls, for example, Ybarra said.

“It’s all about balance,” she added. To follow the trends without ending up

with a home that looks exactly like your neighbor’s, think of items that are not only more meaningful, but unique.

In other words, make your own artwork once in a while — whether it’s made of a piece of fabric or a unique piece of sculpture, Ybarra said.

Additionally, mixing and matching furni-ture pieces make a one-of-a kind statement.

“My biggest pet peeve is walking in some-where and everything matched,” she said. “A room is much more visually interesting if there are more unique pieces. It’s eye candy.”

And it doesn’t have to be over the top expensive, she said, just by hanging win-dow treatments differently, it can be visually appealing. “There are a ton of things that you can do but people have to be aware of them,” Ybarra said. “It gives you that multimillion dollar look without the price tag.”

LandscapingFrugality is a virtue these days — and more people are showing that in their home landscaping projects. “For the most part, it looks like people are trying to do little things to spice up their yard and make things look different,” said landscaper and carpenter Andy Francis of Detroit Lakes, who has been in the business for about 15 years.

“I push towards a patio.”

Page 28: Spring Home 2010

SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 10’26

“They’re looking for something that dresses up their yard that’s not too expensive,” he explained. It can be something as simple as a one-sided privacy wall that doubles as a bench; incorporating a grill into a free-standing wall; or installing a movable outdoor fire pit. He also builds decks and patios. “I try to talk people out of decks, unless they abso-lutely have to have it,” he said. “I push towards a patio.” The reason? “Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance,” he said. Even composite decking material will crack, it doesn’t look like real wood, and the underlying wooden deck support will still need maintenance, he said. High-quality, properly installed patio paving stones will last a long time, without a lot of work on the hom-eowner’s part. He uses pavers made by industry leaders like Borgert and Anchor that meet requirements set by the Minne-sota Department of Transportation. “People think a paver is a paver, but it’s not,” he said. Generally, you get what you pay for when it comes to quality and durability. The best pavers are not that much more expensive, considering how long a patio is designed to last. “Concrete, even stamped concrete, it’s either cracked or it’s going to crack,” Francis said. “It lacks the density that pavers do — they don’t absorb water, and pavers are flexible.” It’s possible to gain height without a deck, through a raised patio, made with retaining walls.

It’s also possible to have recessed patios — an out-side walk-out basement, for example. To avoid pitfalls like sinking or uneven pavers, homeowners may want to consider hiring a profes-sional to create the patio. “It’s labor intensive,” Francis said. “You need the right cut saws and tampers. The big thing is having it properly installed — it only looks as good as it is installed, and (professional installers) pick up a few tricks over the years.” Properly installed, pavers will last a long time — hundreds of years, in the case of roads still being used in some parts of the world, Francis said. “Basically, when all is said and done, if you can put a paver patio in instead of a deck, do it — the mainte-nance over the years is well worth it.”

The countryside has begun to turn from brown to green. Snow and ice have slowly given way to budding trees and bloom-ing flowers. Spring is a time of renewal, of starting fresh. For many of us, that fresh start begins with a familiar tradition known as spring cleaning. Here are a few helpful tips to get you on your way to a cleaner, better organized home (sources in parantheses).

TOP:It’s time to declutter and find the spring indoors again.

ABOVE:Conquering clutter can be done with the 4 container method.

Conquering Clutter: the 4 Container Method (Sarah Aguirre, About.com).

One of the biggest parts of spring clean-ing is getting rid of unwanted clutter. Rather than wandering through the house haphazardly, searching for stuff you don’t need, why not try something a little more organized. Find four boxes and label them with the following categories: Trash; Give Away/Sell; Storage; and Put Away. Working room by room, sort items into the appropriate boxes, and don’t forget to go through clos-ets, cabinets, drawers and other storage spaces. ■ In the trash box, put anything that you don’t want, and no one else is likely to want either. If something is damaged or broken, and not readily repairable, it belongs in this category. ■ When thinking about what to give away or sell, be generous. Consider the uses someone else might get out of the items ver-sus the use they would get buried in cabinets or closets of your home. If you think you might get some financial benefit from them, consider holding or taking part in a garage sale. ■ Items that you cannot part with, but do not need on a regular basis, should be put in storage. Seasonal clothing may be included in this category. As you box items for stor-age, make sure to take an inventory, and label them for easy location later. ■ Items in the put away category are those that are used regularly, and need to be readily accessible. This should be your smallest category. If you can’t find a place for all these items without creating clutter, reassess how essential they are, then try to find a storage solution that fits your home.

eight Major hot SpotS You Shouldn’t MiSS (Reader’s Digest).

Ready to give your home a top-to-bottom buffing? Start by focusing your efforts on the big pieces and on the places that make the most difference to you: furnishings, appliances, and carpeting.

TOP:A fresh, clean doormat is even a welcoming sign for any house.

SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 10’22

Once you’ve covered these major tasks, you’ll have your home spring-cleaned in no time. ■ Make doormats welcoming. Shake ’em, wash ’em, swat ‘em with a broom. Give them the toughest cleaning they can take. They’re your front line against tracked-in dirt — so keep them clean enough to function at peak efficiency. ■ Vacuum with intelligence. The old rules mandated that you go through the labor-intensive task of dragging every stick of fur-niture off the carpet, just so the vacuum cleaner could cover every nook and cranny. The new rules will save you time, and you’ll still get the corner-to-corner cleaning done: Simply move those big items a little to the left or to the right. Vacuum the area previously occupied by the furniture and then move it back into place. ■ Clean carpets and upholstery. Fabrics that have absorbed a winter’s worth of dirt, body oil, and germs will need a deep clean-ing to get them ready for another year of wear — and for that close inspection by your relaxing guests. If you choose not to hire a service to do the cleaning, practice first in an unobtrusive area to make sure you have the knack of the machine you’re using and that the treatment won’t discolor fabrics or cause dyes to run. Save time by moving furniture just slightly, to clear a path, and place the legs of each piece back on top of small wax paper squares after shampooing, to protect both the carpet and the legs of the furniture.

TOP:Move furniture to one side of the room then vacuum. Place the furniture back where it belongs and move on.

RIGHT:Don’t forget the cracks. Even wood flooring needs a polish for a nice shine.

Page 33: Spring Home 2010

SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 10’ 31

■ Finish your floors. To protect the floors in your kitchen from another year of wear and tear, wax or apply a sealer fol-lowing label directions. The simplest meth-od: Use a combination wash-and-wax floor cleaner. Don’t feel guilty about saving time! No-wax floors don’t need a polishing treatment, but an occasional makeover will keep them looking fresher — and add a protective buffer that could help them last longer. Use a floor cleaner that cleans, shines, or both. If you have wood floors, move furniture and rugs aside, then apply a wood cleaner and either liquid or paste polish to clean and add a new wax coating. Make sure to follow label directions for each product. ■ Wash walls, cabinets, baseboards, and woodwork. The walls may not look as if they need a bath — after all, dust and soot fall to the floor, right? Most of it does, but just enough clings to vertical surfaces to warrant a seasonal bath. Use a sponge and hand dishwashing detergent, washing the surface in sections. A sponge mop makes it easier to reach higher spots. Use two buckets: one for dishwashing detergent solution and another for wring-ing your sponge. Dry the walls and wood-work with a clean cloth. ■ Clean ceiling fixtures. Remove dust and dirt from ceiling fans and air-condition-er vents with a cloth and a vacuum with a soft nozzle attachment. ■ Clean your light fixtures. A few min-utes with a stepladder, all-purpose cleaner, a sponge, and a polish cloth will give new light to your life. If your home has sky-lights or tall ceilings, consider investing in a stepladder and extended-reach dust-and-dirt-removal tools, all of which are available at your local hardware store and at home and janitorial supply stores. ■ Check your coils. You should clean the refrigerator’s condenser coil, usually found behind the toe grille, with a long-handled bottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to remove dust and lint. Built-up dust can shut down the unit by causing it to overheat. To remove dust from coils attached to the hard-to-reach back side of the fridge, carefully pull the refrigerator out several

feet (newer models roll on casters) and vacuum thor-oughly; finish by sweeping or vacuuming the floor area you’ve revealed. Expect to rediscover coins, bottle caps, and twist ties that you and the cat knocked over the past year.

Spring Cleaning tipS for the lazY (Althea Chang, Mainstreet.com).

A thorough spring cleaning is a daunting event, especially when you’d much rather be snoozing on the couch, so if you take no pleasure from clearing out all of your clutter and cleaning up messes, there are a few easy approaches. And we don’t mean shoving every-thing into a closet when guests are at the door. ■ Invest in air purifiers. Dusting can be an annoy-ing chore that’s easy to put off until a layer of small particles piles up so high that you can’t see the original color of your bookcase or TV stand. But if you keep air purifiers strategically placed in your home, you’ll likely be able to pull out the Pledge less often and keep from stirring up a dust cloud every time you sneeze. ■ Avoid indoor pollutants. Simply by smoking outdoors and limiting your use of candles, incense, exhaust fans and fireplaces, you could significantly avoid creating more dust particles, thereby reduc-ing how often or how vigorously you need to clean indoors, according to Consumer Reports.

■ Invest in storage bins. If you have just as much trouble keeping up with your snail mail as you do filing away or deleting, say, the 3,000 unread e-mails in your inbox, a few attractive storage bins can make you look and feel more organized than you really are, suggests Glamour magazine. Ideally, you’d have a separate bin for different types of items, like utility bills, unmatched socks and cleaning supplies. ■ Throw rugs/tile in high traffic areas. If you have carpeting that tends to get particularly dirty or worn because it’s in a high-traffic area like an entryway, rugs and tiles made of hardwood or easy-to-install multi-use flooring can go right on top of your carpet, making that area of your home much easier to clean. ■ Vacuums aren’t just for floors. If you hate strug-gling to remove your couch cushion covers, don’t for-get that a vacuum isn’t just for your floor. You can use it to clean your upholstery, which is especially handy when you have pets, and some might even suggest using it to clean your bed sheets between washings. ■ Clear out the kitchen. The term “when in doubt, throw it out” doesn’t just refer to food safety in the kitchen. You can save cleaning time by applying it to a refrigerator full of stuff you rarely ever use. Plus, if you have a bunch of old kitchen gadgets that you haven’t used in ages, ditch those too, because you’re not very likely to use them, notes the New York Daily News.

Cabinet cleaning is a must. Remember, ‘when in doubt, throw it out.’
