General Description The Model B-1 Upright and PendentFoam-Water Sprinklers are air-aspi-
rating foam discharge outlets de-signed for use in foam-water delugesystems. They are designed for flam-mable liquid risks where it is desired toapply foam from overhead sprinklers(either upright or pendent) and wherefollow-up with plain water in a standardspray sprinkler pattern is necessary asin the case of NFPA 16, “Standard forthe Installation of Foam-Water Sprin-kler and Foam-Water Spray Systems”.
It is recommended that the end user beconsulted with respect to the suitabilityof the materials of construction for anygiven corrosive environment. The ef-fects of ambient temperature, concen-tration of chemicals, and gas/chemicalvelocity, should be considered, at aminimum, along with the corrosive na-ture to which the sprinklers may beexposed.
The Model B-1 Foam-Water Sprinkleris a redesignation for the Gem IssueB-1 and Star Model B-1.
WARNINGS The Model B-1 Foam-Water Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro-
tection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these de- vices.
The owner is responsible for maintain-
ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions.
Technical Data ApprovalsThe Model B-1 Upright and PendentFoam-Water Sprinklers are UL andULC Listed. (Discharge outlets and
foam concentrates are Listed for usetogether. Refer to the individual foamconcentrate Listing for operating limi-tations and compatibility with the B-1Foam-Water Sprinklers as provided inthe UL Fire Protection Equipment Di-rectory.)
The Model B-1 Upright and PendentFoam-Water Sprinklers meet the re-quirements of MIL-S-901C for light-weight Grade A shock proof equip-ment.
The Model B-1 Pendent Foam-WaterSprinklers meet the requirements ofMIL-H-24146.

Operation The Model B-1 Foam-Water Sprinklersare designed with a unique venturistyle body. As foam solution (waterand foam concentrate mixture) flowsthrough the inlet of the body, air isdrawn into the body through the open-ings adjacent to the wrenching area. The foam solution and air mix is thenagitated to create an air-aspiratedfoam.
The B-1 Foam-Water Sprinklers aredesigned to discharge foam in a pre-determined discharge pattern, as wellas to discharge water similar to stand-ard spray sprinklers. To meet the in-tent of NFPA 16, foam-water sprin-klers must be able to sufficientlydistribute water after depletion of thefoam concentrate.

IMPORTANT Always refer t o Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER WARNING” that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and in- stallation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely.

Design Criteria The Model B-1 Upright and PendentFoam-Water Sprinklers are intendedfor fire protection systems designed inaccordance with the standard installa-tion rules for foam-water sprinklerssystems recognized by the applicableListing agency (e.g., UL Listing isbasedon the requirements of NFPA 13and 16).
Figure 2 provides the nominal dis-charge patterns for reference use.
NOTE The discharge patterns shown in Fig- ure 2 are not to be used for design purposes or to disregard standard in- stallation rules.
Not less than two foam-water sprin-klers are to be installed in any area, regardless of size, in order to obtainpattern overlap.
The applied density (flow per unit ofarea) of foam solution must meet therequirements of the Authority HavingJurisdiction for the type flammable liq-uid and occupancy. Per NFPA 16, cov-erage density must not be less than0.16 GPM/ft2 (6,52 mm/min) of floor
area with a resulting minimum dis-charge pressure of not less than 30 psi(2,1 bar).
Foam-water sprinkler spacing mustnot exceed the requirements of NFPA13 for extra hazard occupancies andthe system must be hydraulically cal-culated to obtain the required densityand discharge pressure.
NOTE Discharge outlets and foam concen- trates are Listed for use together. Re- fer to the individual foam concentrate Listing for operating limitations and compatibility with the B-1 Foam-Water Sprinklers as provided in the UL Fire Protection Equipment Directory.
Installation The Model B-1 Foam-Water Sprinklers
must be installed in accordance withthe following instructions:
NOTE A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi- mum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque may be used to install sprinklers with 1/2 NPT connections. Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet and cause impairment of the sprinkler.
Step 1. Pendent sprinklers are to beinstalled in the pendent position, andupright sprinklers are to be installed inthe upright position.
Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the pipe threads, hand tightenthe sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.
Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using an 8 or 10 inchadjustable Crescent wrench. With ref-erence to Figures 1 and 3, the adjust-able Crescent wrench is only to beapplied to the wrench flats of thewrenching area.

Care and Maintenance The Model B-1 Foam-Water Sprinklersmust be maintained and serviced inaccordance with the following instruc-tions:
NOTE Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, permission to shutdown the affected fire protection system must be
obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified.
Model B-1 Foam-Water Sprinklersmust never be painted, plated, coatedor altered in any way after leaving thefactory; otherwise, the spray perform-ance may be impaired.
Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam-aged by dropping, striking, wrenchtwist/slippage, or the like, must be re-placed.
Frequent visual inspections are rec-ommended to be initially performed forsprinklers installed in potentially corro-sive atmospheres to verify the integrityof the materials of construction as theymay be affected by the corrosive con-ditions present for a given installation.Thereafter, annual inspections perNFPA 25 are required.
The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance oftheir fire protection system and de-vices in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of the National Fire Protec-tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), inaddition to the standards of any otherauthorities having jurisdiction. The in-stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-facturer should be contacted relativeto any questions.
It is recommended that foam-watersprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualifiedInspection Service in accordance withlocal requirements and/or nationalcodes.
