All students have to follow the rules of the University interms of both studying and behaviour. The rules are thoseset out in the University Calendar. If students are suspectedof breaking these rules, the University uses the Code ofDiscipline to investigate the situation and, if necessary, impose a penalty.

The code of discipline can cover a huge range of situations, from misuse of University facilities to harassment ormisconduct. It also covers major breaches of Universityregulations, such as plagiarism.

What is dealt with under the code ofdiscipline?

    Can disciplinary matters resolve informally?

There is not really a system for informal resolution of adisciplinary matter. However, some regulations in theUniversity Calendar allow for minor breaches of regulationsto be dealt with at a lower level. For example, instances ofplagiarism that are not very extensive orthat are thoughtto be unintentional, may be dealt with by the Head ofDepartment. More serious or extensive plagiarism are passedto the Senate Assessors for Discipline.

The Advice Centre can support you with your case regardlessor what level it is dealt with.

When an allegation that a student has committed a disciplinaryoffence has been made, the case will be investigated by theSenate Assessors for Discipline. They can conduct whatever

I want to deny the allegations what evidence do I need?

There are only three grounds for appealing a disciplinarydecision. These are:

    1. New evidence has emerged which could not reasonablyhave been produced at the first stage;2. There has been defective procedure at the first stage;3. The penalty imposed was clearly unreasonable (or, in thecase of an investigation by the Assessors, disposal at theAssessor stage was clearly unreasonable).

Decisions made by the Head of Department can beappealed to the Senate Assessors for Discipline. Decisionsof the Assessors can be appealed to the Senate DisciplinaryCommittee. Any appeals under the code of discipline mustbe made within 10 working days of receiving the decisionyou are appealing against.

    What is the process?

Obviously, the evidence you require will depend on thecircumstances of your case. Typically, this could be lettersof support from anyone who can confirm that what you aresaying is true, for example parents, flatmates, people on your

course, your adviser of studies or a GP or counsellor.

Can I be thrown out of University?

The Senate Assessors for Discipline have a variety of punishmentsthey can impose. These range from admonishing the student,to imposing a fine, to suspending them from the University for

investigations they think are appropriate, e.g. interviewingthe person who made the allegation, members of staff, otherstudents of the University or members of the public.

As soon as is practicable, the student will be informed in writingof the alleged offence, provided with details of the allegationand informed of the requirement to attend an interview.

If responsibility is admitted or if it is decided beyond reasonable

doubt that a disciplinary offence has been committed, theAssessors will listen to any explanation or mitigation and makea decision as to what, if any, penalty to impose.

up to 12 weeks. If an academic offence (e.g. plagiarism) hasbeen committed, it is more likely that an academic penalty (e.g.a reduction in marks) would be imposed.

If the Assessors consider that none of these is sufficient, theycan refer the case to the Disciplinary Committee, which has theoption of expelling the student from the University.
