A community mural that tells the story of ‘living in the foothills of Geboor’ was unveiled during a harvest festival at New Gisborne Community Garden on Saturday. Gisborne Church of Christ spokesman Marc Huggins said the 5 x 2.5-metre mural, made up of photos selected from a public contest held in February, was a celebration of the Macedon Ranges’ lifestyle and environment. “It’s a bit of a snapshot of what it’s like to live in the area,” Mr Huggins said. Geboor is the Wurundjeri name for Mount Macedon. The mural, which overlooks the community garden at the church, is visible from Saunders Road and includes written pieces acknowledging the area’s original inhabitants. Food harvested from the garden was available during Saturday’s festival. The garden was established in 2014 to provide a communal space for gardening and produce that will go to families needing help. Details: www.gcofc.org.au

e RSPCA says it’s reviewing its handling of animal cruelty reports aer more than 40 dead and badly malnourished horses were found at a Bulla property.

In a lengthy social media post to supporters last ursday, the organisation said it was deeply disappointed and acknowledged “we’ve let you down”.

It said a heavy case load and the 1989 murder of an inspector were factors in the horse case’s severity not being realised until police and a veterinarian attended the farm in Batey Court on April 3.

e RSPCA received information on March 22 that horses were le without enough feed.

‘‘Had we known the severity of the situation earlier, we would have made sure that action was taken immediately.’’

One of 23 horses removed from the property on April 4 had to be euthanased.

Bulla resident Rob Mitchell, who made the initial report about the horses, said the RSPCA had dropped the ball.

‘‘We all look up to them,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s just so disappointing. It’s about the welfare of the animals in the end. is just shouldn’t happen.’’

A government spokesman said animal welfare was a high priority and it had provided $5 million to the RSPCA for operations cracking down on illegal puppy farms in 2015.

Mr Akers could face up to two years in jail, a ne of up to $74,620 and be banned from owning any animal for at least 10 years, if found guilty of causing death by neglect.

He is expected to return to court in May.

Sheep kisser ‘not ours’A graphic photo of a man pretending to kiss a dead sheep was not taken at Hardwicks abattoir in Kyneton, the company’s human resources department says. Animal Liberation Victoria last week posted the photo, obtained from a dating site, on social media with information suggesting the man was a Hardwicks employee. In a statement, Hardwicks said the photo clearly indicated the processing oor in the photo was not its facility, but the man had done some work for the company from 2010-12.

Work on the biggest project in Western Water’s history is about to begin, with management of Sunbury’s recycled water plant handed over last week.

An extra four-million litres of water will be available every day to help drought-proof houses and sports elds in Sunbury and Diggers Rest once the $53 million upgrade is completed in early 2018.

Engineering and construction company Downer, which has a 10-year deal with Western Water to design, build and operate the plant, took control of the Harker Street site last week.

Western Water customer relations general manager Graham Holt said recycled water was set to become an increasingly important resource.

‘‘e upgrade will ensure we can continue providing safe, eective sewer services and a reliable, high-quality recycled water supply to these growing communities,’’ he said.

Earthworks are likely to start mid-year. Disruption to nearby residents is expected to be minimal, with construction restricted to between 7am and 6pm.

‘‘We’ve done a lot of work to ensure the community is involved in this project,’’ Mr Holt said. A project reference group includes residents who live near the plant.

e existing plant will continue operating during the upgrade. More than 50 full and part-time jobs will be created during construction.

Hume council mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou opened up about her own breast cancer battle while helping to launch a permanent BreastScreen clinic at Sunbury on Monday.

Describing herself as the proud ‘‘pink’’ mayor of Hume, Cr Patsikatheodorou said the state’s 40th xed clinic, which replaces a mobile service operating between towns including Sunbury, Gisborne and Kyneton, would greatly improve screening hours.

‘‘We now have the opportunity to boost the participation rate, helping to tackle the most common cancer among women,’’ she said.

Cr Patsikatheodorou was able to return to work thanks to early detection and a successful operation to remove a tumour more than two years ago.

With data showing one in nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, she said regular screening was crucial.

‘‘My grandmother, mother and mother-in- law all died from complications of breast cancer,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

‘‘Early detection gives women the best chance of treatment and recovery.’’

She said she had worn something pink every day of her mayoral term ‘‘so husbands, sons, brothers, partners and friends will remind the women in their lives to have a breast screen’’.

‘‘No woman in our community should die from breast cancer,’’ she said.

BreastScreen chief executive Vicki Pridmore said the new clinic in Horne Street would help save lives.

She said rapid population growth meant the area had ‘‘outgrown’’ its mobile service, which visited towns every two years.

‘‘A xed clinic helps us provide a clinic all year round,’’ Ms Pridmore said.

From one who knows …

BreastScreen chief executive Vicki Pridmore, Lake Imaging general manager Craig Lightfoot, Jill Hennessy and Sunbury MP Josh Bull. (Supplied)

Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the xed clinic would enable up to 2600 women to be screened every year. BreastScreen services are well supported locally, with participation data averaging 57.5 per cent across Gisborne, Kyneton and Sunbury – just above the state average of 56 per cent.

e clinic’s rst client will be screened on Tuesday.

Event spokeswoman Helen Relph said Braemar students had again taken a key role.

‘‘From the school’s cadets through to music

and art students, they’re putting a lot of eort in,’’ Ms Relph said.

Athol Guy and music director Shaun Evans are working on a program that includes popular tunes from Vietnam-era performers, such as Col Joye, Little Patty, Lorrae Desmond, Ian Turpie and Normie Rowe.

‘‘Students will also project a lot of great footage from the era onto the wall as part of that,’’ Ms Relph said.

Last year’s dinner raised $10,000. Tickets to this year’s dinner are strictly limited. Cost: $100 (includes canapes, three-course dinner and drinks).

Residents of Lanceeld, Benloch, Baynton and Romsey are being urged to have their say about how communities can be improved as part of a program set up in the wake of last October’s devastating Cobaw Ranges bushre.

Organisers of Make a Change, a social venture designed to provide the inspiration, skills and support to make community projects a reality, is seeking expressions of interest as it begins work in the area.

Suggestion boxes have been placed at local

She said it was an opportunity for people from various groups to unite.

‘‘ere’s no set outcome … it will really be based on what people in the community want to do,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s really about facilitating conversation. We recognise there’s a lot of great stu already happening in communities.

“We’re not coming in to say you should do this or that. Our approach is about bringing people together and giving them more opportunities.’’

Information gathered during the program’s

libraries and neighbourhood houses ahead of special events planned over the next six months.

Make a Change spokeswoman Karen Corr says the program will include community discussions and workshops to explore what’s needed and how to make things happen.

e rst workshop, titled Outside the Square, is on May 29.

‘‘We’re inviting anyone in the area to come along and share their vision for the community,’’ Ms Corr said. ‘‘We want to know what they want, the kinds of things they want.’’

initial stages will be used to help formalise ideas into concrete projects.

‘‘ey might be existing projects, but people might need to know how they can take them further,’’ Ms Corr said.

‘‘We will give them resources and show them government programs or other community initiatives they might be able to link with.’’

Make a Change’s nal stages will include skills training.

e program is being funded by the state government.

From the ames, ideas sprout

Indigenous youth who have been given a grounding in lm production are set to pass on their skills to adults.

Productions completed during last week’s four-day Sunbury Community Health (SCH) digital storytelling project will also be screened at a short lm festival later this year.

SCH Aboriginal engagement ocer Gail Radford said the free four-day workshop for young people aged 12-24 was a great success.

‘‘ey’ve really been getting into it,’’ she said.

‘‘Nickiera is in grade 6 at Kismet Park, and she’s done everything herself.

‘‘e script writing, the editing, acting, lming … it’s fantastic to watch.’’

Highlights included a visit to the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development, a tour of the Victorian College of the Arts and lessons on lmmaking,

script writing, camera placement and storyboarding.

Participants also spent two days shooting, editing and screening their personal stories, with themes including how ancestral knowledge has been passed down.

Ms Radford said planning for a second workshop, at which the young people will mentor adults, is under way.

Briefs

Cleaning service alert Kyneton residents are urged not to engage the services of a door-to-door carpet cleaner who’s the subject of a Consumer Affairs Victoria warning. CAV director Simon Cohen said complaints had been received after David James Donald, using the registered business name Donald Cleaning Services, approached people in their homes. ‘‘Consumers who have complained to us have described his approach as intimidating, particularly his insistence on being paid immediately in cash,’’ Mr Cohen said. Mr Donald, who was last year made the subject of a Supreme Court order, is believed to have been in Kyneton in February. Anyone approached by him since December 8 last year is asked to phone CAV on 1300 558 181.

SunFest calls for namesSunbury residents are needed to join the committee behind the state’s biggest community-run festival. Coming on the heels of SunFest’s successful 40th anniversary event in March, the group’s annual meeting will be held at Sunbury Football Club from 7pm next Monday. Details: www.sunfest.org.au

Carpark decision revisitedMacedon Ranges council will consider a rescission motion relating to its proposed sale of land in Aitken Street, Gisborne, to Aldi at a special meeting on Wednesday night. Ofcers recommended the land be sold so Aldi could build a public carpark, but a revised motion was passed to canvas interest from other parties as well.

Can you tell us how you came to be in Australia?

We were born in Zimbabwe and emigrated from South Africa in August 2010 aer my husband was oered a job in Sydney. We spent three years there before he was transferred to Melbourne.

What was it about Gisborne that appealed to you?

We spent six months at Docklands and used to drive around to dierent areas to see what they were like and try the trac. Gisborne just had a lovely feel about it. We also love Mount Macedon. It’s just about the prettiest place we’ve seen. We’re living on about 10 acres … we just couldn’t ask for anything better. It’s so very safe here and everything works.

How do you like to spend your spare time?

We’re pretty busy with our little property, in the garden and so on. We do a lot of travelling around Australia and we like to play a bit of golf. My husband also has an o-road bike that he likes to get around on.

e decision to take citizenship, was that just a natural progression?

It was just a matter of waiting out the time to become eligible. It was always our intention when we got here. It’s been ve years building up to this; we’re really looking forward to it.

MY PLACEBorn in Zimbabwe and coming to Gisborne via South Africa and Sydney, Cecelia Roode tells Matt Crossman she’s glad to call the Macedon Ranges home. e administration worker, husband Jacobus and 10 others will become Australian citizens at Kyneton on Tuesday.

10 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 12, 2016

Since opening as Itahlia last October, owners David Raso and father-in-law Gaetano have been rapt to see locals enthusiastically embrace their menu and new look. Feedback to date has been very complimentary about the service, food and ambience.

POPULAR DISHES

Old-fashioned lamb cutlets, served with a mint gravy, is a big go-to dish for diners who appreciate tradition. And the seafood platter is a perennial favourite, with grilled sh, king prawns, scallops and salt-and-pepper calamari making for a feast of ocean bounty.

Wood-red pizza with Moroccan-spiced lamb llet, red onion, fetta, mozzarella, tzatziki and coriander takes top billing, and vegetable calzones (from $10.50) are doing a roaring lunchtime trade, along with burgers and chicken wraps.

Nutella pizza and a good selection of cakes are sweet nishers.

The Italian restaurant caters for gluten-free and vegetarian, with kids’ and seniors’ menus at $11.90 and $9.90 respectively.

LOOKING AHEAD

As a parent himself, David is looking to start kids’ nights, with face-painting and balloon-sculpting as entertainment, which he hopes will give parents some couple time. A loyalty program is in the pipeline, and expect to see giveaways on Facebook (www.facebook.com/itahliarestaurant).

Itahlia Restaurant, 25-47 Horne Street, Sunbury. Opens daily 11.30am-late. Inquiries: 9740 9770 or www.itahliarestaurant.com.au.

All bright and modern, this house is a winner for families who just want to move in and relax. It has three bedrooms, each with a robe and distinctive, family-friendly decor. A study/rumpus with free-standing robe and xed bench is ideal as a fourth bedroom or hobby room. The large main bedroom has a walk-in robe and smart en suite. The spacious, tiled living hub incorporates the kitchen, which has an island breakfast bench, soft-charcoal cabinetry and stainless-steel under-bench oven, 900-millimetre gas cooktop and dishwasher. Outdoor entertainment is well catered for, with a covered area housing a bar and barbecue. The fully fenced backyard is low maintenance and has two handy garden sheds. Gas ducted heating, split-system and ceiling fans tame the climate and an integrated double garage and boat/caravan port are desirable inclusions.

Retirees, investors and rst-home buyers are likely to battle it out for this one. The location is a big drawcard – the property is 800 metres from the train station and within a ball toss of Ranges Medical Centre, Warrina Village, childcare, park and tennis courts. Three carpeted bedrooms share a bright, all-white bathroom and separate toilet. A lounge room near the front door, with oating oorboards and a wood heater, connects with the meals zone adjoining the kitchen. The light-lled, all-white kitchen has a dishwasher and gas upright cooker. A cupboard laundry is off a rear vestibule, which leads to a shadecloth-covered pergola above concentric circles of bricks. This pretty area looks out to shady and inviting gardens (including a vegie patch) on a block of about 801 square metres. The property has natural gas ducted heating, a garden shed, new fencing and a steel garage at the end of a long concrete driveway.

On about 8.09 hectares with forest and dam views and a glimpse of Mount Macedon, this architecturally unique residence has had a recent renovation that includes new oor coverings, painting throughout and a new deck. A quirky, multi-level oor plan includes ve large bedrooms, the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite with dual vanity basins. The main bathroom is rather special, with a sunken spa looking out through a curved glass wall to bushland. There’s also a study. Living zones are plentiful, with a separate step-down lounge room, a dining space with a curved glass wall and a large kitchen-family-meals zone with a wood heater. The new deck is large and well sited to take in the relaxed atmosphere of the bush, and the big dam that provides a haven for wildlife. The property, within a few minutes of Calder Freeway, V/Line station, shops and schools, has plenty of shedding and a double garage with internal access.

In an elevated spot in a quiet neighbourhood, and within easy reach of the town centre, this large house on more than 1700 square metres has plenty of room, inside and out, for a growing family. Three living zones include an open, carpeted lounge room with bay window; a separate living room with oating oorboards and bay window; and a large family-meals zone, also with bay window and oating oorboards. The galley-style kitchen has stone benches atop white cabinetry with lots of drawers and the full suite of mod-cons. Three of the four bedrooms are across the way from a bathroom with freestanding tub, along with a laundry and separate toilet. The big main bedroom at the opposite end has a walk-in robe and en suite. A good-sized wedge of concrete provides outdoor sitting space and lots of terraced lawn further back has nascent gardens. A concrete driveway leads to an integrated double garage with internal access.

Impressions upon entry here are threefold – the lavish space, the light and the gleaming presentation.

It’s only the maturity of surrounding landscaping that hints at the property’s age (about 12 years) – inside everything is as fresh as a daisy and shinier than any new pin.

The decor is owing and harmonious, with mid-blue carpet in most rooms, dove-grey wall paint and quality lace curtains at many windows. The oor plan is brilliant for a family that values spread-out space, and the surrounding land of about

8000 square metres is packed with potential – an orchard, a pony or perhaps a BMX track.

The main living hub is immediately on show after entry, with a large lounge dining room at right (with bay window) and two sets of multi-paned french doors ushering in the vast family-meals zone (meals within a bay window). The kitchen has an island bench, Tasmanian oak cabinetry, a corner pantry, dishwasher and LaGermania 900-millimetre cooker.

The main bedroom is at the opposite end to the others and has a walk-in wardrobe

and an en suite with a huge corner tub and dual vanity basins. Four more are through a door from the living hub, the rst set up as a study with main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry opposite. Another door opens to a large rumpus room with bay window and back verandah access. Around this are the remaining three bedrooms.

A covered pergola above concrete is at the back and looks out to a landscaped backyard maintained with an irrigation system. Beyond a fence comes the enormous paddock rimmed with densely planted cypresses affording both privacy

In popular Rolling Meadows estate and built by JJ King as a steel frame, the house has solar panels, ducted heating and cooling, and gas-boosted solar hot water system. A large, American-style barn, 27,000-litre water tank and double garage with internal entry are extras at a great place within minutes of bus stops, playground and footy oval.

“TEACH THEM WELL”I was shocked and horrified to see on the news that

three little girls had been attacked and abused in a

playground because of their relation and their country

of origin.

This is not a new situation but was saddened to think

that we have not advanced in our attitude in the last

50 plus years and we have not learnt to teach our

children to respect others.

I know that we are all afraid of “terrorists”, horrified by

“ISIS”, shocked by the devastation caused by suicide

bombers but it is fear and hatred that feed terrorism.

As a parent and a grandparent, I dream of a time when

we can live together with respect and acceptance

– a “pipe dream” perhaps, but we must teach the

children well. Small children have the amazing ability

to instinctively know when an adult is “good”, “safe”

or “bad” and “unsafe” and this intrinsic instinct has

nothing to do with colour, colour, colour religion or origin. A child

does not care about colour or religion, a person is

“good” or “bad”. As adults, we could learn from our

children rather than passing our own prejudices onto

them. “Do not judge a book by its cover” is an oldie

but a goodie and it is time to teach our children the

value of love, respect, honour and responsibility.

“Teach“Teach“T them well” or the world will never change.

35 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 12, 2016

SPORTCommunity pushes small Ranges club to the tope long hours and hard work put in by volunteers at Macedon Ranges Basketball Association have been recognised by Basketball Victoria.

e association was named the Keith Wilson Small Association of the Year for 2015 at Basketball Victoria’s Country Awards on April2.

Association president Megan Condron said the award represented three years’ hard work by volunteers.

“We’ve come a long way in the last three years; it’s been a journey,” she said.

“We have more than doubled local participation in the sport, and our juniors now have a range of development pathways open to them – both in country Victoria and through the Sunbury basketball competition.

“Woodend and Macedon Ranges are literally shooting above their average,” she said.

is year, the MRBA won the under-18 boys division 2 basketball championship as well as

the under-12 girls division championship. Condron said the link between the association and Gisborne Bulldogs and Riddells Creek basketball associations had also been a key to the development of their association.

Among highlights in recent years for the association has been going from having two to 25 accredited coaches, and having Woodend as a satellite training location for the regional academy program.

Junior player Nick Grantham is representing Vic Country at the under-18 state championships this week. Condron said the next step was to expand even more.

“We’re at a tipping point … we have to start advocating for more courts so we can continue to grow,” she said.

“It’s necessary for Woodend and the Macedon Ranges. We’re starting to turn some kids away, which is very heartbreaking.”

Burnside Heights were caught in a under-storm, suering a massive rst-up loss to East Sunbury in Essendon District Football League’s division 2.

e under had a 100-point win over the Lions in the nal round of last season, and put in the most dominant performance of the club’s short history in its 28.16 (184) – 8.10 (58) win on Saturday evening.

e match was well and truly over by the rst break and, if it wasn’t for poor kicking in front of goal, the margin could have been a lot bigger than 66 points at half-time. At that stage, it was 23 to seven scoring shots.

e second half was much the same as the rst, with under dominating all aspects of the game. Coach Steve Grey was pleased the players got such a win.

“It’s great to be on top of the ladder,” he said. “is hasn’t just started this year; it started 12 months ago when we started to rebuild.

“It’s a very positive and big step forward. Our under-18s won by 150 points and our twos by 10 goals, so it was a good day all round.”

Despite the massive win, Grey wasn’t 100 per cent happy with his players’ performances. He gave them a roasting at three-quarter time, reminding them top sides wouldn’t let them get away with playing as they did in the third quarter.

“We lairised a bit in the second half,” Grey said aer the game. “Our structures fell away – instead of using the ball, there was a bit of players being individuals.

“But they’ve never been in that situation before and never learnt to handle that situation.”

Grey said it was the rst time the side had 22 contributors in an even performance.

“It’s the rst game that all 22 have played a role for the side – Ash Fleming started really well; Tommy Galea up forward, if he converted straight, would have kicked ve goals in the rst quarter.

“Now we have the likes of Dylan Tarczon, Lucas Shaw and Aaron Aquilina and a few more numbers in the mideld, which makes a big dierence.”

e under face a bigger test this week, taking on Jacana, which went down by one point on Saturday.

Thunder rolls over Lions’ den

By Tara Murray

Lanceeld had an easy win over Woodend-Hesket on Saturday in its rst Riddell District Netball League match of the season.

It was an even performance across all four quarters for the Tigers, who shot at least 20 goals in each quarter in the 81-33 win.

Before the match, Tigers coach Alan Watson said he was excited to see what his side would produce this season aer strong recruiting in the o season.

“We’ve been lucky enough to pick up some VNL (Victorian Netball League) players and been able to retain a lot of players,” Watson said.

“We’ve added height, pace and skill to the squad. With all the changes we’ve made I think we’re 50-60 per cent stronger.

“If we can get them all on the court at the one time it will be a very strong line-up.”

Among those who joined the club were Maddi Wallmeyer, Anice Scherer, Tee Salanoa, Ashlea Hyatt and star shooter Stacey Gannon, who all have VNL experience.

ey join Taylah Watson, Savaii Williams, Paula Broadstock and Courtney Annett, who have returned this season.

Olivia Pels, who missed last year’s nals with injury, also returns.

Watson said he was looking forward to seeing the midcourt combination of Watson, Wallmeyer and Scherer.

“Tee is quite quick and Maddi also has pace. Maddi can play the centre position and it gives us another option besides Taylah,” he said.

Among the outs for the Tigers is last year’s captain Gemma Jackson, who is focusing on basketball.

e biggest challenge for Lanceeld early in the season will be getting a full strength team on the court because of VNL commitments. As the seasons run concurrently and the VNL plays some matches on Saturdays, players will not be available to Lanceeld for every match.

But Watson said he had no concerns about not having his full line-up available for every match, saying they were experienced enough to adapt to the changes.

Having the extra strength in the A-grade side will ow onto the other sides, with Watson expecting improvement across all four grades.

“Across the club we’ve picked up about 15 players,” Watson said.

“e challenge is on all the sides to improve on last season.

“We built the foundations last season and

made nals in both A-grade and B-grade. We’re probably 50 per cent better in the B-grade side.

“We got the Scully sisters across from

Romsey and they’re good players.”In the other match due to be played at the

weekend, Melton Centrals was given the points when Rockbank could not eld a team.

36 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 12, 2016

Jets season lifts off with impressive third victorySunbury Jets withheld a determined Camberwell side to make it three wins from as many matches in Big V women’s division 1.

Impressive in their rst two matches, the Jets worked hard to win against Camberwell, 80-74.

For Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama the most impressive thing was how his side responded to being two players down. Jess Bygate and Raihania Ratana both missed the game due to injuries.

“We potentially could have dropped that match,” Kereama said. “e other girls had extra responsibility and handled it well.

“Kayla [eodore] came into a starting role and Alex [Darby] had additional minutes o

the bench. Chelsea [Burns] had to play in a forward position … she would normally play as a guard.

“Everyone had to put in a little extra work and eort. ere was a lot of dierent combinations, and we still managed to shoot at 60 per cent in the rst half.

Kereama said Bygate could have played, but she is being managed ahead of joining the New Zealand team looking to qualify for the Olympics. Ratana will miss a few weeks with a torn pectoral muscle.

e game was played at a high tempo – both sides had players in foul trouble during the match.

“Camberwell were prepared and we stood tall against a high quality side,” Kereama said.

“It was a quality game of basketball and both teams fought hard.

“Kayla, Chelsea and Monique [Stevens] were in foul trouble and, to their credit, they played out the game and didn’t get the fouls, which would have seen them come to the bench.

“We’re a side that will make big runs on the scoreboard. We were up by 10 at one stage and they made a run back, which was the reason the margin was so close.”

Emma Mahady top-scored with 22 points, while Monique Stevens scored 17 points.

“e fact that she was getting open looks is

credit to the oence to get the ball in the right hands at the right time,” Kereama said.

“Emma did a good job, especially in the rst half.”

e men’s side celebrated its rst win of the season over Keilor on Saturday night.

Flying out of the blocks in the rst quarter, the Jets held o the fast-nishing under to win 85-81.

Mitch Newton, who played the whole 40 minutes, scored 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, while Ish Sanders also scored 28 points.

Sunbury Lions know what to expect from their experienced players and new recruits, but it’s the young players who will again determine the club’s fate in the new Ballarat Football League season.

Aer blooding several young players over the past two years, Lions coach Rick Horwood said he would look to them again as they attempt to climb the ladder.

“We’ve been very lucky to make the nals in the last two years,” Horwood said.

“We expect to play nals every year and nothing will change this year.

“How we go will depend on the players we’ve given experience to and whether they’ll step up again this season.

“Our list is very similar to 2012 [when they won the premiership] with the experience we have.

“We want to be competitive against the top four or ve sides. ere could be seven or eight sides pushing for nals.”

While much has been made of the Lions’ new recruits, Horwood is excited to see what the existing players will do this year.

“Jesse Flannery is going really well on the track and has been implementing that in practice matches,” he said.

“Tom Donoghue has beneted from 12 months with the side, while Nathan Wood and Jack Landt are enjoying having experienced players around them.”

Horwood said former VFL forward Jack Sheahan was back to the “old Jack” in another boost for the club, while Jack Sullivan had played in a practice match aer surgery last year.

Of the new recruits, Horwood said Alik Magin had stood out at training. Magin joined the club in the o season, along with Grant Valles, Joey Redfern, Jesse McInneny, Chris Tsardakis, Roger Allen and Patrick MacDonough.

“Because Chris MacDonough [recruiting manager] did such a fantastic job it’s the rst time we’ve had all our recruits signed before Christmas,” Horwood said.

“Since Christmas it has been a lot about getting to know each other and each other’s games.

“All the new players have good character and had an aliation before coming to the club. ey all knew someone or had played with players before.

“Alik by far has been the standout of the new recruits.”

Horwood said Patrick MacDonough was likely to miss the rst couple of games aer hurting his shoulder in January.

e Lions kick of their season on Saturday when they travel to Maddingly Park to take on Bacchus Marsh.

Tara Murray

Lions look to the cubs againBy Tara Murray

Lanceeld kicked o its Riddell District Football League season with a hard fought win against Woodend-Hesket on Saturday.

In the rst game at Gilbert Gordon Oval since 2014, nothing separated the two teams in the rst three quarters, before the Tigers kicked away late in the match to secure the 13.8 (86) – 9.15 (69) win.

Tigers coach Ashley Manning said it was good to get the season o to a winning note aer losing a close game to start last season.

“Aer quarter-time we were a bit more accountable,” he said.

“ey had a couple of key forwards looking dangerous and our defenders were able to shut them down.

“Our mideld was on top and we had a good target up forward.

“We didn’t necessarily control the game but we had the game more on our terms. It’s good to get a win.”

Once they hit the front in the second quarter, the Tigers repelled all the Hawks’ attacks to maintain the lead.

But it could have been a dierent story if the Hawks had kicked straight in the second quarter, when they made just 10 behinds.

“We were lucky they missed a few gettable shots,” Manning said.

“ey should have been three or four goals up.

“ey kicked six or seven points in a row and, as happens a lot in footy, we went up the other end and kicked a goal.

“It obviously dented their energy.”Up the other end of the eld, last year’s

league leading goalkicker, Jon Kent, continued where he le o with six goals.

“It’s a huge bonus for him to kick six,” Manning said. “I thought he was clearly best on ground.”

Kent was well supported by a number of experienced players, while Manning liked the games of some of the young brigade.

“He had a lot of assistance,” he said. “Chris Barton was good and Brett Pitts had 25 possessions o a limited pre-season.

“Ciaran Barton was fantastic at half-back, while Daniel Rebbechi and Daniel Frost were also good.”

e Tigers now have the week o because of the split rst round and will face Diggers Rest in round two.

“We have ve or six new players in the side and we’ll get better as the season goes on,” Manning said.

“A couple of us will likely watch Diggers Rest on Saturday and spend this week working on our game style.

“We might work on some tness and push them a bit harder with the week o.”

Melton Centrals took the points in the other match played at the weekend.

Centrals smashed Rockbank, 18.26 (134) – 4.1 (25).
