Spiritual Retreat July 5-7 “St. Teresa of Avila” The

Interior Castle—Please come to a Spiritual Retreat from Friday evening July 5 through lunchtime on Sunday, July 7 at Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg led by Carmelite Friar Father Michael Berry, renowned retreat master and spiritual director. Father Michael has been a friar since 1998 and a priest since 2006. His theme will be “The Interior Castle,” St. Teresa of Avila's masterpiece on developing a mature prayer life in which she imagines the soul as a castle made of a single diamond in which there are many rooms, just as in Heaven there are many mansions and she explains how we pass through each on the path toward spiritual perfection. Father Michael will show that this celebrated work is as relevant and important now as it was when St. Teresa, recognized by the Church as the Doctor of Prayer, wrote it over 400 years ago. This retreat offers Mass, spiritual activities and presentations, gives the opportunity for more time spent in prayer and contemplation and deepens our relationship with God during a brief relief from the pace and stress of modern life. The full weekend cost for this silent retreat is $225, with reduced rates available for attending individual days. Organized by the Secular Discalced Carmelite communities in Frederick and Westminster. Please come and invite your family and friends to share this Retreat. Space is limited. Please contact Dawn Walsh [email protected] or Ken Vaughan 301-473-5112

ST. RAPHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND June 16, 2019

Vincentian reflection: Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity is one of the mysteries of our

faith as we grow in it we come to recognize the incomprehensible love that God has for us every single day of our lives. In today’s culture of frenzied activity, we can struggle with the temptation to worry about the past or fear the future. We cannot change what occurred in

the past nor can we predict future events. So we must focus on the present and trust in God’s providence for graces needed for this one day. Listen for the messages the Holy Trinity wants you to feel deep in your heart. It will invariably draw you back to their command to love one another as they have loved you! And then share that love with those who need it the most. If you know of a family who needs assistance, tell them there is hope. Tell them to contact The St. Raphael Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul by calling 240-447-7027. Are you looking to help out your parish in the fall? Please consider offering your time and/or talents to serve as a leader for several fall events. The first event is the Thanksgiving Food Drive, which works really well with co-chairs! The second event is serving as a co-chair for our Mother Teresa event in December. Volunteers are welcome for other ministries during all times of the year, including The Society of St. Vincent de Paul/St. Raphael Conference, joining our Angel Friends Program and participating in the preparation plans for lobbying our MD elected legislators in 2020. To inquire, call Sandy Shamburek at 240-864-2514. In order for all of these events of be successful, parishioners must become engaged.

“Some Saints are privileged to extend to us their

patronage with particular efficacy in certain needs, but not in others. Our holy patron St. Joseph has the

power to assist us in all cases, in every necessity, in every undertaking.” ~ St. Thomas Aquinas

For all fathers: St. Joseph led a quiet and hidden life but he achieved greatness in his obedience to God’s Will. He was a holy man that all men can emulate. On this day, we celebrate the Father’s critical role in the family especially facing today’s culture. The Catholic Gentleman, written by Sam Guzman, is a practical guide to virtuous manhood. Written with regard to the wisdom of our Catholic Church, it provides succinct writing on various topics, including how to know your authenticity, understanding why your body matters, the value of tradition and the purpose of courtesy in raising a family. Share this book with the Father in your life.

Pray for Bethesda: Join other concerned people for the weekly prayer vigil every Monday morning from 9 AM until 11 AM on the public sidewalk north of the Wildwood Shopping Center (in front of the Sun Trust Bank) on Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda. Parking is restricted so visit www.prayforbethesda.com for instructions on legal parking. Contact Dick Retta, 301-538-2500 or Missy Smith 202-288-4984 for details.

More on NFP: A literature search of PubMed, a widely accepted scientific database, reveals what many have known; those who practice natural family planning are significantly less likely to divorce. Recent research has revealed that hormonal contraception actually dramatically affects the choice of potential spouses by altering to whom the woman is attracted. A report in Scientific American actually recommended that women go off of the hormonal pill for at least 6 months, to allow for the brain chemistry to return to the levels before hormonal contraceptives were begun. To learn more information on this topic, go to https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4536625/. Memorial Mass for Mattie J.T. Stepanek: St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, located at 6701 Muncaster Mill Rd, Derwood, will celebrate this Mass Saturday, June 22 starting at 11:00 AM. Mattie authored several books of his poetry and a best seller on peacemaking. He was a true inspiration for his courage, hope and loving presence. To learn more about the cause for Mattie’s sainthood, contact [email protected] or call 240-994-0603. Attention all young adults! Fr. Morrow will show the film The Sexual Revolution: 50 Years Since Humane Vitae in the Parish Library on Wednesday, June 26 at 7:30 PM. Come and discuss a good film about how the “free love” movement started, something that was not known to many in the sixties. Empanadas will be donated as a refreshment during this showing. A discussion will follow. (See page 5 for ad.)

High School Youth

No Youth Group – June 16

“I’m ‘Spiritual’ Not ‘Religious’” – June 23 Many in today’s culture identify as “spiritual” and not “religious” and don’t see a need to subscribe to any particular religious denomination. All high school teens are invited to join us from 7-9PM in the Youth Center for pizza, games, and a great discussion. Facetime – June 30 At Youth Group on June 30, we’ll talk about the difference between social media and being social. SRRE offers continuing faith formation for all children and teens, as well as preparation for sacraments. Each year of faith formation is designed to deepen relationships with Jesus and his Church through focus on what we believe, the celebration of sacraments, how we pray, and how we live. We look forward to having all our SRRE children and teens back in September, and we are eager to welcome new families. SRRE registration is completed online through the parish website: www.straphaels.org/religious-education. Note that you will need your parish envelope number, as well as the location and date of your child’s baptism. Contact our office if you have any questions. Tuition: One child - $125 Two children - $200 Three or more children - $250 Sacramental Fees: First Eucharist in 2020 - $75 Confirmation (8

th grade) in 2020 - $125

Confirmation (high school) in 2020 - $150 Payment plan and reduced tuition are available for families who need financial assistance. Please contact Mary Beaudoin. The SRRE Office also coordinates sacrament preparation for all children ages 7-18. This includes Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, and Eucharist. Please contact Mary Beaudoin for information.

Catholic School Students – Sacramental Preparation Children in Catholic schools need to register with their parish Religious Education office because sacrament preparation and celebration take place in the child’s home parish, not in the Catholic school they attend (though Catholic schools assist with aspects of the preparation). If your child attends a Catholic school (other than St. Raphael) and will be entering grade 1, 2, 7 or 8 in September, please register online at www.straphaels.org/religious-education. We need to be able to contact you with important information, including meetings and preparation guidelines. Thanks!

Sacrament Photos Now Available The photos from our May 11 and May 18 First Communion and Confirmation Masses are now available for parents to download. Please contact Mary Beaudoin to receive the link to the photos.

First Eucharist Completed God's Gift Eucharist and We Give Thanks and Praise workbooks are available for pick up at the SRRE office.

Confirmation Service Project In the Gospels Jesus teaches us - by word and example - all about service. In Matthew 25:35-36, Jesus says, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” We strive to recognize Jesus present in each person and make a point to serve those in greatest need. And in John 13:1-17, Jesus, who is their teacher and master, washes the feet of his disciples.

Teens preparing for Confirmation in spring 2020 are working on their Confirmation Service Projects. The project consists of ten or more hours of service and a reflection paper. Giving both time and talent, through acts of service, is integral to Christian life. Through Baptism we share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. The new life begun in us at Baptism is strengthened in the sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation candidates and parents can find service information and forms at www.straphaels.org/confirmation-1. Records of Service and Reflection Papers are due on September 3.

Faith Formation for People with Special Needs In the fall of 2012 St. Raphael started a religious education program for students with autism and other special needs who

could not be accommodated in our typical classes. The first class had three students. Since then the program has blossomed and grown. In May, five students from our program received the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was a beautiful ceremony where they celebrated with over 40 of their peers who were also being confirmed. Do you or someone you know have a child/adult with special needs in their

family? Has the child/adult received the Sacraments? Does the family feel like they can’t come to church with their family member with special needs? We want to help! Please contact Maria Harrington ([email protected]) or Mary Beaudoin in the RE Office. ALL Are Welcome!

Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World

In his apostolic letter Gaudete et Exsultate (in English, Rejoice and Be Glad), Pope Francis reminds us that we are all called to become saints. This week: Discernment

How can we know if something comes from the Holy Spirit or if it stems from the spirit of the world or the spirit of the devil? The only way is through discernment, which calls for something more than intelligence or common sense. It is a gift which we must implore. If we ask with confidence that the Holy Spirit grant us this gift, and then seek to develop it through prayer, reflection, reading and good counsel, then surely we will grow in this spiritual endowment. The gift of discernment has become all the more necessary today, since contemporary life offers immense possibilities for action and distraction, and the world presents all of them as valid and good. . . . Without the wisdom of discernment, we can easily become prey to every passing trend. This is all the more important when some novelty presents itself in our lives. Then we have to decide whether it is new wine brought by God or an illusion created by the spirit of this world or the spirit of the devil. At other times, the opposite can happen, when the forces of evil induce us not to change, to leave things as they are, to opt for a rigid resistance to change. Yet that would be to block the working of the Spirit. We are free, with the freedom of Christ. Still, he asks us to examine what is within us – our desires, anxieties, fears and questions – and what takes place all around us – “the signs of the times” – and thus to recognize the paths that lead to complete freedom. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY QUOTES (from the kids)

• Here's to one of my favorite parents! • A father is someone who carries

pictures of his kids where his money used to be.

• Dad, I can never repay you. Literally. • I feel bad for other people today.

Obviously my dad is the best. • You're the greatest father I've ever

had. • Thanks for putting up with me, Dad! • In honor of Father's Day, I promise to

laugh at all of your jokes. • Happy Father's Day, Dad. You were

right—about everything.
