Plates
Steel plates are value-added steel products used in diverseindustries such as shipbuilding, oceanic structures, boilers, bridges, large-scale oil pipelines, and steel structures. Dongkuk Steel manufactures a whole set of steel plates, rangingfrom those for general use to those for shipbuilding and high tensile strength steel, always in accordance with shipbuilding steel certification boards in eight major countries including the U.S. and Japan.
At Dongkuk Steel, we expedite the decision making process toalways ensure a sufficient number of slabs, the raw materialneeded for plate production. In particular, Dongkuk Steel’s No. 1and No. 2 plate mill, which have adopted a 4-high reverse rollingmill, including a rolling mill and a finishing mill, produce highprecision plates with virtually no quality deviations. This leads to high customer satisfaction as we meet demands asquickly as we do effectively. Dongkuk Steel is growing into a world-renowned company, with steel plates being our core strategicproduct.
The overall process is controlled by means of a state of the artcomputer system. The No.2 Plate Mill, which has an annual production capacity of 1.5 Million tons, has incorporated the latest technology in computer integrated manufacturing in orderto produce top quality plates. Its product size range covers all plate productsfrom 6mm to 120mm(1/4”~5”) in thickness and1,524mm to 4,100mm(60”~16”) in width.
The Roughing and Finishing Millsare 4-high reversible, and the MillStand Housings are the world’slargest single-cast mill housings. The Reheating Furnace utilizes theWalking Beam system and its reheatingcapacity is 235 tons/hr.The mill line consists of two millstands, the Roughing Mill and theFinishing Mill which are capable ofrolling products that exit the reheating furnaceat various temperatures.By incorporating the X-ray Thickness Gaugeand the Profile Gauge that interact with therolling process, we are able to produce plateswith accurate thickness and tight surfaceflatness tolerances.
We produce the best cut platesin our heavily equipped shearline. After the Mill Line, the product is levelled in theHot Leveller. Then the product passes throughone of the two cooling beds, the No.1 CoolingBed (Light Line) for plates less than 50mm(2”)in thickness and the No.2 Cooling Bed (HeavyLine) for plates over 50mm(2”) in thickness.
The Walking Beam type of movement of thecooling beds enables us to eliminate damageson the surface of the product. The shearlineconsists of a Crop Shear, two Double SideShears and Slitter combination, and two EndShears, which are heavy shearing equipmentsthat cut the product into the final sizesrequested by the customer. Thicker size platesthat require gas cutting are processed in ourGas Cutting Bay.
Our centralized laboratory is fullyequipped with a state of the artlaboratory equipment in order tosatisfy our customers’requirements.
Samples are taken from the plates for qualitytesting, and they are transported to our state of the art central laboratory by a network ofconveyor belts, where Gamma rays are used toexactly measure the thickness and length. Our laboratory is also capable of performingproduct surface inspections. In response to our customers’ request, wehave also installed a separate facility forperforming Ultrasonic Tests.
We are always striving to satisfythe demands of our customers.
The technical force of Dongkuk Steel is alwaysby the customer’s side in order to help themdecide the most appropriate productspecification for their intended purposes. We also provide an exact delivery schedule aswell as all the alternatives for a safe and efficientmethod of transportation.Over the years, we have acquired a solidoverseas sales experience and haveestablished a proven system for on timeoverseas delivery. At Dongkuk Steel, our top priority is totalcustomer satisfaction by means of highproduct quality and dedicated customerservice.

The heart of the global steelindustry in the 21st century
Covering 210 acres, our plants produce
an annual output of 3.84 million tons of
H-sections, including steel plates and steel
bars. Since October 1999, when we
upgraded our facilities at Pohang, the
plant has remained competitive in terms of
facilities and technology not only by local
standards, but by international ones.
The first direct current electricarc furnace in Korea installed
Ever since it installed a direct current
electric arc furnace for the first time in
Korea, the Works has been producing 1.5
million tons of deformed bars and sections
a year at a continuous casting plant and a
rolling plant equipped with cutting edge
facilities on the 69-acre land.
A main base for high value-added products
Flagship products include asymmetric
angles, three-inch angles and profiles.
In particular, 100 percent of our three-inch
angles are exported to overseas markets,
which imply top-notch technology.
The industry is also giving a good deal of
attention to F-type profiles, another high
value-added product which Pohang
Works has successfully managed to
produce in a test run.
