Ice-skating a lessonin life for pupilsA Vision AfriKa-led trip to the ice-skating rink has taught 15 Grade 9 pu-pils just what it is possible to achieveif they try, try and try again.

The outing to GrandWest Entertain-ment World in Cape Town earlier thismonth was the first time for most of thepupils from Stellenzicht Senior Second-ary School in Jamestown to try ice-skat-ing.The aim of the excursion was to have

them experience how much time and ef-fort it takes to achieve a goal and also tounderstand how vital it is to keep going, despite failures, in order to master some-thing.On arriving at the ice rink, however,

the pupils were intimidated by the sightof other people holding onto the outsiderail for dear life. As a result, they triedto find excuses to get out of participatingin the challenge ahead. But, with encouragement from their

team leaders, some ofwhomdid not knowhow to skate either, they all took to theice in groups of four in order to supportandmotivate each other aswell as to hold

each other up.While some participants clung to the

rail, pleading for help, it soon becameclear that those who went full steamahead andwere prepared to fall, time andagain, were the quickest to learn. As one of the students, Fenecia Beukes,

said: “Support will only be there for a lit-tlewhile and thenyou are alone to accom-plish your dreams. It’s then up to you totake responsibility for your own achieve-ments.”Anotherkey lesson fromtheoutingwas

that, although it is sometimes necessaryto struggle to achieve your aims, thereis always an answer to your problemsomewhere, if you look hard enough. As another pupil, Emmarencia An-

drews, pointed out: “If you find yourselfin a difficult situation, there is always asolution.”By the end of the day, most of the Grade

9’s seemed to have found it and werepleased to demonstrate that they nowknew how to skate. For more information about the

National Nutrition WeekSouth Africa’s risingobesity epidemic prompt-ed the Department ofHealth and its partnersfor National NutritionWeek 9 – 15 October to fo-cus this year’s campaignon raising awareness ofthe importance of portioncontrol.

Statistics show that in-creasing numbers of SouthAfricans are overweight orobese, with the problem atits worst among adult wom-en and preschool children.Over 40% of adult women

are classified as obese andobesity in adult women hasincreased in the last decadefrom 27,5% to 40%. In theage group two to five years,18,9% of girls and 17,5% ofboys are classified as over-weight.Significantly, over the

past decade, the prevalenceof overweight preschoolboys and girls has risensharply from 10,6% to18,2%.An issue which Lynn Mo-

eng, Chief-Director ofHealth Promotion and Nu-trition at the Department ofHealth says cannot be ig-nored.“People are eating too much and

they’re eating the wrong foods. Byeducating them about portion sizeand choices, we aim to change atti-tudes and habits so that people‘downsize’ and reduce their healthrisk.”“Eat less – choose your portion

with caution!” will be the centralmessage for National NutritionWeek2013,with three important sup-plementary messages, namely:

) Choose a variety of foods fromdifferent food groups and eat recom-mended amounts

) Make portion control a dailyway of life

) Use salt and foods high in saltsparinglyInaugurated 15 years ago, the

event is a vital public health inter-vention and is jointly planned by theDepartment of Health, the Associa-tion for Dietetics in South Africa(ADSA), the Consumer Goods Coun-cil of South Africa (CGCSA), theHeart and Stroke Foundation andthe Consumer Education Project of

Milk SA (CEP).Research also indicates that the

rise in obesity rates have been paral-leled by increases in the portion siz-es of many foods and the prevalenceof eating away from home.“Eatingpatterns are likely respon-

sible for an increase in unhealthyweight-gain of the South Africanpopulation,” said Yolandé van derRiet from the Food Safety Initiative(FSI) division at theCGCSA. “Peopleare eating out more and they’reseemingly eating more energy-dense, processed foods which arehigh in sugar, fat and salt. People arealso eating larger portions of food.”One research study found that peo-

ple consumed at least 30%more fooddue to large portion sizes, includingpre-packaged snacks and beverages. The survey also found that peopledidn’t adjust their intake at theirnext meal to compensate for havingeaten those foods.Anotherstudy, the2008SouthAfri-

can Youth Risk Behaviour Survey,found that around 26,5% of 13 – 19

year-old pupils ate a super-sized portion each time theyate fast foods, whichVanderRiet says highlights theneed for widespread publiceducation about portioncontrol and food choices. However, evidence does

show that after educationand training, parents aremore able to accurately esti-mate their children’s por-tion size.“During National Nutri-

tionWeek 2013, communica-tions will be aimed at pro-viding the community withpractical ways to help themeat less such as using small-er plates, bowls and uten-sils, repackaging snackfoods into individual-sizedportions, not eating in frontof the television and encour-aging children to take alunchbox containinghealthy snacks to school,”said Moeng.Whilst controlling por-

tion size is an effective, sim-ple, reliable and sustainabletool for weight manage-ment, eating large amountsof food is just one of the rea-sons why people becomeoverweight or obese. Eatinghigh-energy foods that arehigh in sugar, fat and salt,

not eating a variety of foods from thedifferent food groups and not doingsufficient physical activity all leadto weight gain and increased healthrisks. As more and more South Africans

become overweight or obese, theirrisk of chronic diseases, diabetesand some cancers increases, saidADSA president, Claire JulsingStrydom. The 2012 SANHANES report found

that two out of five South Africansconsumed food low in dietary diver-sity indicative of a diet of poor nutri-tional quality, with over a quarterof people consuming a low amountof fruit and vegetables. The World Health Organisation

recommends that adults eat nomorethan a teaspoon (5 grams) of salt aday from all sources, and althoughnew legislation will limit the saltcontent ofmany prepared foods suchas bread, awareness of the salt con-tent of foods is crucial. For further information visit

Time to bust fuel-efficiencymythsAs a car owner you’ve probablyheard your fair share of fuel-effi-ciencytips,buthaveyoueverques-tioned whether they are in facttrue or merely myths?

LesMcMaster,Chairmanof theMo-tor Industry Workshop Association(MIWA), says therearemanyfuel-effi-ciency myths doing the rounds inSouthAfrica currently, especially fol-lowing the recent truck and taxi acci-dents that have made headlines.“The fact is thatmany fuel-efficien-

cy tips may have worked in the pastwhere vehicles had less sophisticatedcomponents.Mostof thesedon’tapplyany longer since vehicles manufac-tured today have computer-control-led automotive systems. Some of thetipsdidn’t evenmakethatmuchsensein the past, so as a vehicle owner youneed to be savvy about the tips youreceive and rather ask an expert if indoubt.” Based on tips from MSN Au-tos (http://home.autos.msn.com/),McMaster gives his advice on thesefuel-efficiency myths:Gearing into Neutral at stopsThis myth may have been relevant

whenenginesusedcarburetorsbutto-day’s cars have computerised fuel-in-jection systems. These systems senseif an engine is revving above idlewhen you ease off the accelerator. Ifthat happens, the fuel injectors shutoff, so fuel is no longer injected into

the engine, even if the car is still ingear.Byconstantlyshiftinginandoutof neutral the only thing you may ac-complish is premature wear on yourgear box.A full tank is more fuel efficientThe idea that a tank more full than

empty will prevent fuel evaporationinside the tank is incorrect. Fuel sys-tems in modern cars are designedwith vapour recovery systems so noevaporation is possible.A dirty air filter leads to lower

mileageTheengines inoldervehiclespulled

air straight through the air filter intothe carburetor, so a clogged filtercould affect fuel efficiency to somede-gree. However today’s advanced en-gines have a computerised enginecontrol module (ECM) to regulate theair-to-fuel ratio.Air goes through the filter and then

through a mass airflow sensor thatlets theECMgauge theairflowandad-just the fuel accordingly; less airflowmeans less fuel is sent to the engine.Filling up when it’s cooler saves

me moneyForyears, amythhasbeencirculat-

ing that if you buy petrol during thecooler part of the day you getmore foryour money, since a cooler liquid isdenser. This theorymaysoundbeliev-able, but at filling stations petrol is al-most always pumped from storagetanksunderground that arenaturally

insulated from large temperatureswings.Cruising downhill in Neutral

saves petrolThis is one of the biggest myths

thrown around. The truth is thatwhen coasting in Neutral, the engineis idling, consuming just asmuchpet-rol as when it’s idling at a traffic lightor warming up in your driveway. The reality is that it’s actually abad

idea to roll downhill or up to a stopsign in Neutral because you need tobe able to use the accelerator to avoidan unexpected road hazard.Fuel saving devicesLastly be aware of claims made by

manufacturers regarding fuel savingdevices. There are a number of differ-entdevicesdoing the roundsandeachone is purported to have magical fuelsaving powers, be it a magnet deviceconnected to the fuel supply linewhich “aligns” the atoms in the fuelby electromagnetic field, to the swirlor vortex device which is fitted to theintake manifold. There is no scientific evidence that

any of these devices will in any wayimprove the fuel efficiency of amotorvehicle. Be cautious of marketingploys and before you consider pur-chasing such a device, seek the exper-tise of your nearest MIWA dealer toguide your decision making. Rule ofthumb, if it sounds too good tobe true,it probably is!

Watch your credit spendingWith the festive season nearing,South Africans is urged to managetheir credit-based spending moresensibly.“Some borrowers like to think

that credit is patient. This, togetherwith forgetfulness about number ofloans, is themain reasonwhymanyborrowers fall in to a debt trap,”said Johan Maree, CEO of FNBCredit Card.Figures (to June 2013) issued re-

cently by the National Credit Regu-lator showed a modest increase of0,6% in the number of customerswhowere not meeting their month-ly loan repayments, and a small de-

cline in credit advanced for unse-cured loans and credit card facili-ties. “Consumer spending is boundto increasewith the festiveandholi-day season approaching and it iscrucial that consumers monitortheir credit expenditure and realis-tically assess what they can affordto spend after adding their existingloan payments.”Retail accounts and credit cards

are effective transactional tools ifused within boundaries. Howeverwhen used to fund a lifestyle thatis not realistically within yourmeans of living, the risk of beingcaught up in a debt spiral increases

significantly. It has been noticedthataccounts tendtogo intoarrearsduring the month of January, re-sulting in customers starting theNewYearoffwithbadcredit ratingsand a growing inability to makeminimum payments.Maree advises that debt consoli-

dation is a good option to considerwhen making monthly minimumrepayments become difficult.Debt consolidation allows you to

merge retails store debt, short termloans, personal loans and othercredit card debt into an account, making the administration thereofmanageable.
