We take it whence it comes, your tirade against Steve Hofmeyr . The truth is sometimes brutal, but

i t remains the tru th. Steve's righ t of course - he knows his history (his people had the written word

so things can be checked) while the "others" occupied this continent for millennia and did nothing,

absolutely nothing except kill each other and plant a few mealies. No wheel, no written word, notowns, gardens, hospitals, railway lines, factories, shops or any other accoutrements of a

civilization worth its salt. Just check out what the early English missionaries found when they

ventured into the country's interior in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They had no

political agenda and they wrote as they saw - they sketched primitive people with spears and loin

cloths standing outside straw and mud houses. They wrote about their wars and their early deaths

because of disease and internecine struggles. There were no title deeds then, so claiming land is

now a bi t hit and miss, given that there were no records of anything. The white man codified their

languages (who else did it?) so being "oppressed" by whites is hardly the way it was.

There is no proof whatsoever that these Africans would have advanced one inch without white

influence. Otherwise why didn 't they create a civilization of their own? They had the territory, they

had the sun, the rain, the rivers, the green pastures. Oppressed? Give me a break I would think

they should go on their knees every day that the whites came to South Africa first. (What would

have happened if the Chinese or the Arabs had got here first? You should shudder to think,

Virginia.)

You talk about the black "owners" of this land. How can they prove they owned anything? They

didn't have the written word so no title deeds, no records, no nuttin'. Where's the proof, Virginia?

Aren't you supposed to back up your journalist ic integrity with facts? Or did your white baas tell

you you can say what you like because you're "previously disadvantaged"?

So let's get down to the basics. Every single thing you own and consume was provided to you by

the whites and their civilization. Tell me one thing - one single thing - tha t occurs in your life that

is indigenous to black South Africa? Even your job is courtesy of a white man. The language you

speak, the clothes you wear, the food you eat spring from a white civilization. The transport you

use, the water from the tap, the electricity lighting your house are not indigenous to Africa. The fact

that you are not standing on some dusty red earth watching the Ebola health workers take out your

I just loved your "we are twenty years into democracy, into freedom" platitude . Democracy? You've

got to be kidding When the country is run from Luthuli House, where not one parliamentarian isresponsible to any constituent, and where the so-called government is the worst the country has

ever had, there's not much to be said for democracy. And freedom? Freedom to do what? Pee

against someone's wall? Throw rubbish into our once clean spruits? Murder someone for a cell

phone? Live in crowded shacks in a squatter camp because you were "free" to come to a city with

no job for you? So that's freedom is it?

You're not free, Virginia. Your white baas gave you a job. You use his language and you write what

he tells you to write. The "verkrampte regses" are right. Democracy and freedom screwed up big

time

You ask Steve to pak open trek". Why don't you do this if you're not happy with the white man's

legacy to this country? How about looking for a job in Zambia? Or Rwanda? Hey, what about

Liberia, home of Ebola This is the country comprising slaves repatriated from the United States.

The country has been financed and supported by America ever since - the US couldn't get them

back to Africa fast enough Liberia has freedom and democracy too, but they don't even know how

to wash their hands. There are no whites in Liberia, and that's the difference. Why don't you go

there and you won't have to put up with people like Steve?

You talk about being "onderdruk". Yes, there was law and order and you couldn't just go into apark and defecate and throw your papers all over the show and leave your takeaway mess under a

seat. Which park do you take your children to now, Virginia? Remember Joubert Park in

Johannesburg? Christmas was a wonderful time - the lights, the theatre shows, the decorations.

Now it is home to Somali squatte rs who live there, and hang their washing over the trees and use

the gutter as a toilet. Was it better under apartheid, or worse, Virginia? Now that the park s for

everyone, who wants to go there? What was wrong with control under apartheid? Sweden for

and then you'll realize why there was apartheid. You say footpaths were only for whites? I never

saw that. People could walk where they wanted in public places. There was no one side for you,

one side for me . Where did you see that, Virginia?

You can 't have it all in South Africa, Virginia. You ask how it feels to experience this and that. Does

it not worry you that we experience things that are a hundred times worse than not being able to

go into someone's restaurant? What about the vicious crime? What about the wanton killing and

torturing of farmers? What about the unemployment and the terrible poverty, much worse than

under apartheid?

What about the corruption in government? Who is stealing us blind? The whites or the ANC? Who

has destroyed productive farms in their hundreds in order to prove a failed policy? Who is putting

food security at risk? The whites? Who has turned our once world class health system into a third

world disgrace where babies die and patients have to buy their own anaesthetics and medicines

because the hospitals have run out? The whites? Who doesn' t answer the phone, doesn' t reply to

letters and generally doesn 't give a rat s backside for the people who pay their fancy salaries? The

ANC's comrades occupying jobs for which they are not qualified, or the Whites? Who are

deployed somewhere else when they're found with their hands in the cookie jar? White

Your freedom and democracy people can't even run a post office, Virginia. They can 't keep thecountry in electricity, and they can t run the Johannesburg Zoo, let alone protect our wildlife. They

let their animals starve on farms they were given on a plate by their pals in the government. They

are unable to produce books for school children. They steal from their own children's school

feeding schemes . They steal from the social grants (read welfare payments) destined for poor old

people n the homelands who stand all day to get their money.

They talk nonsense with regularity. They promise the earth but do nothing. They are charlatans of

the first order. They refuse to admit they are wrong. They are incompetent and useless. It's always

someone else's fault - it's the stolen cable, its apartheid, it's the weather, its colonialism, its

racism. This is why they are legal thieves under the guise of BEE They need BEE because they

can't even start a spaza shop in the township. They rob and assault the Somalis and the Pakistanis

who do start them . They are a disgrace and you would do well, Virginia, to concentrate on this

cancer eating away at a once beautiful and prosperous country. Don't worry about apartheid,

Virginia, or Steve either. There's much worse on the way to focus your mind. Concentrate oncrime, and our window bars and our alarms and our palisade fences with the spikes on top. It's

amazing how many commentators say that crime affects the blacks "as well". But when there were

whites-only areas, there was hardly any crime This is why there were no bars on windows, notownhouse complexes (for security ), no boom gates to keep who out? Whites? No, blacks dear

Virginia. When they were not there, there was virtually no crime.

So put up or shut up. Concentrate on bringing to book the criminals (both government and

freelance), and leave Steve alone. He's telling it like it is, and so should you. Ask those venal

creatures in the ANC to move to black residential areas, to send their kids to black schools, to use

sta te hospitals, to go to black doctors and to buy their clothes in Soweto. The sins of apartheid are

pisswilly compared to the wholesale pillaging of our country by the charlatans calling themselves

the government of South Africa.

Hofmeyr is no stranger to online banter exchange and appears at times to even thriveon it

In June this year Hofmeye r argued with Nelson Mandala's former personal assistantZelda Ia Grange over an arti de written 11 years ago by Emanuel McLittle thatMandala has no legitimate claim to greatness. l Grange asked Hofmeyer why hechanged his mind af ter visiting Madiba eight years before.

President Zuma survived apartheid, rape charges, corruptioncharges and get ting fired, and they think signing a sillypetition will bring him down. The only way to catch Zuma is ifhe also forgets to pay his e-tolls. -But the fact is, leakeddocuments don't tell the whole story.

Look on the bright side.

Madiba passed away more than a week ago and ther e is stillno white genocide. This is not good for the Steve Hofmeyrmarketing campaign.

I think we need more Madiba vibe s. For example, Mandeladefinitely thought like an African in Africa. Along with the

Dear white supremacists,

Ok I lied, this isn't a letter to white supremacists , i t 's about them. Because to be frank,their entire game plan is to be the voice for a privileged, self righteous community ofbigots. So the less you listen to them the less power they have. However, this doesn't meanthey should be l ef t in peace. In my opinion, here's why.

The racism that counts in South Africa is structural racism, the way in which after apartheidpoor black people, who were disenfranchised as a group, are being left to resolve a violentlyunfair status quo as individuals. Don ' t get me wrong, this is more complex than white toblack. The ANC has l indiwe Sisulu saying underparentl y cool with the R7mill spent on toilets around the Greenpoint stadium area or

the World Cup, while allegedly the budget for new toilets in informal settlements this yearfor the entire city is R20mill . If poor people want to not be raped on the way to poo theyshould move to Greenpoint. Why can't they pull their shit together man? The logic that i t 'sOK to have millions spent on parks in one part of Cape Town , wh1le other parts of CapeTown are still stuck in th e 1980s is ctassic structural racism. The logic that the golf coursein Greenpoint has n' t been turned into low cost housing so poor people can be near work isstructural racism. The cultural battle in SA is for us to expose this at every tu m , todenormalize privilege.

The problem is that the Idea of relative white wealth and black poverty have becomeeveryday , so we don't see the insanity in front of us. The trouble with this, in my view, isth a t the most outrageous prejudice becomes acceptable, and asking for common sense toprevail starts sounding radical.Take talk radio . The overriding social agreement is that everyone should have a say and wshould all cumulatively take the outcome of this 'debate' as reasonable. This is classiclit>eralism, the belief in equality. Of course i t ' s very very prejudiced , because it assumesthat everyone has the resources (time, airtime, access to public pla t forms, etc) andtherefore the same voice. e don't , and pretending that w do allows the debate to beseverely skewed in favour of those with resources, which in South Africa is violentlyproblematic.

It ' s how we can have someone SMSing 702/Cape Talk to say shack dwe llers should buildtheir shacks further apart to avoid fires and that they have no respect for people who don'tlook after themselves (true story). Because you know how much choice people in shackshave over where to live . In this case Redi Tlhabi and a few callers came down hea vily onthis imbecile. The trouble, however, is for th e most part media platforms do not reject suchma dness, because we want to seem open minded, and think everyone should have a say. Asa result the internal logic of SA s middle dass public debate is often profoundly anti-poorand in turn structurally racis t.

Enter white supremacists. As an example take Steve Hofmeyr, a hugely successful wealthywh ite South Af r i can entertainer, who tweeted the other day th at Sorry to offend ut in mybooks Blacks were the architec ts of apartheid . Go figure . Of course w a ll went at him ,giving him the exact profile he needs in the conservative apartheid -mis sing community thatpays his bills. I even had one guy suggest I should give Steve a chance to explain himself ,because even bigots need a chanc e.

He has allegedly sa id he doesn't th ink Sharpevi ll e was a huma n r ights atrocity,he gives his white audiences apartheid hardons by singing Die Stem at every availableopportunity, he cons istently regurgitates untruths about white poverty and violent crime on

farms (Africacheck.or g has blown hi s lies out of the water). His language, Afrikaans, Is oneof the most spo ken in SA, but he acts li k e it s vanish ing , partly because the majority ofAfr ikaans speakers in SA ar e bl ac k . Land Rover condemns any act of hate speech or racism. On the contrary, our longstanding involvement and support o f humanitarian outreach across Africa disproves all the

allegations that have unfairly been the misdirected onus of critics in the wake of personal

opinions voiced by Steve Hofmeyr.

Land Rover South Africa has been placed in an untenable situation by both the opinions ofHofmeyr; and the retort by media and public. Land Rover has no relationship with

Hofmeyr- the brand is a sponsor of Afrikaans is Groot , a musical festival.

The well-publicised personal opinions of the popular South African artist have jeopardised

the Afrikaans music industry at large, the reputations of his music colleagues, and those of

the sponsors that enable the cultural festival to happen.

Equally, the South African public and media have largely- and unfairly- put the blame atthe foot of the organisers and sponsors, rather than questioning the personal views of a

single artist.

It would be sad i f a misdirected social media campaign resulted in Land Rover no longer

being able to support such events. We will be reviewing our future sponsorship of the

festival.

Land Rover will continue to pursue its other humanitarian and environmental projects that

continue to provide a better world.

Generalisation about Afrikaners

o proffer a controversial statement by one Afr ikaner as something that is damaging to all

Afrikaners is a further example of double standards . The former minister of women, children and

persons with a disability, Lulu Xingwana, not long ago made the statement that Afrikaner men

are paternalistic and prone to being violent because of their Calvinistic upbringing. But this

statement was not applied to black people as a whole. If AfriForum had implied that Xingwana's

statement reflects negatively on all black people, as is now said about Hofmeyr, those same

commentators would definitely have accused AfriForum of racism. Why should i t be different

with Afrikaners?

Liberal values, freedom of expression and hate speech

The opinions of these liberal commentators brings the ideology of liberalism into discredit since

liberal ism in theory is built precisely on the principles of individual rights , toleranc e and personal

freedom. The well-known saying goes that liberals may vigorously disagree with each other, but

that they must defend to the death the right of their opponents to express themselves as such.

I t however seems as if tolerance and personal freedom for these commentators only applies

when it is in agreement with their own political viewpoints.

A healthy approach wou ld be to respect the freedom to expre ss themselves of those with whom

we disagree, even if we find their viewpoint deplorable. If this person is however guilty of hate

speech or incitement to violence, then the boundaries of freedom of speech as defined in South

Africa have been overstepped and action should be taken against that person. AfriForum is

constantly confronted with deplorable comments , but only acts against a person if thatcomment constitutes hat e speech. The alegations that form the basis of the witch hunt do not

comply with the element s of hate speech.

A bright future? AfriForum's approach

The best way to make this country a better place is to be proud of our multiple identities and to

conduct reasonable and well-argued debates that can contribute to the problems of our country

being tackled in a constructive way. AfriForum's positive contribution as a middle ground

organisation speaks for itself. The small group of commentators trying to label AfriForum a s

extremist is conveniently silent on the fact that actions by AfriForum such as taking on

mismanagement in municipalities, water pollution , corruption and more is to the benefit of

everyone in the country. They also omit to mention the assistance AfriForum recently gave the

black Wallmansthal Communal Property Association against illegal land occup iers and that

AfriForum has repeatedly expressed itself against all forms of racism, includ ing racism

committed by white people.

AfriForum will continue to make a positive contribution by taking fair but firm action where

necessary, without allowing ourselves to be labeled. AfriForum however views the personal

witch hunt by a small group of political commentatorsas

contra democratic and out of keepingwith the spirit of the South African Constitution.

for his book. A guy in Britain (Daily Mail columnist Quen tin Letts) \\TOte abook called '5 People Who Buggered Britain', he says. I liked the idea morethan I b'ked his book. I thought his book felt a bit sort of bitter and not asedifying as it could have been. I felt South Africa was crying out for a book likethis.

Parker's take on Letts' book is that he was really having a go at people whowere still a live , but his own book takes a different approach. We hope th t this glossary will be helpful to your efforts. Unlike most glossaries this glossary isnot in alphabetical order. Inste ad it ranks the words in order of mportance to n overall

understanding of he dismantling structural racism/promoting racial equity analysis.

Structural Racism: A system n which public policies, institutional practices, culturalrepresentations, and other norms work in various, often reinforcing ways to perpetuate

racial group inequity. I t identifies dimensions of our history and culture that have allowedprivileges associated with whiteness and disadvantages associated with color to endure andadapt over time . Structural racism is not something that a few people or institutions choose topractice. Instead it has been a feature of the social, economic and political systems in which we allexist.

Racial Equity: Racial equity refers to what a genuinely non-racist society would look like. In aracially equitable society, the distribution of society's benefits and burdens would not be skewed byrace. In other words, racial equity would be a reality in which a person s no more or less likely toexperience society's benefits or burdens just because of the color of their skin . This is in contrast tothe current state of affairs n which a person of color is more likely to live in poverty, be imprisoned,drop out of high school, be unemployed and experience poor health outcomes like diabetes, heartdisease, depression and other potentially fatal diseases . Racial equity holds society to a higherstandard. It demands that we pay attention not just to individual-level discrimination, but to overallsocial outcomes.

Systemic Racism: In many ways systemic racism and structural racism are synonymous . fthere is a difference between the terms, it can be said to exist n the fact that a structural racismanalysis pays more attention to the historical, cultural and social psychological aspects of ourcurrently racialized society.

White Privilege : White privilege, or historically accumulated white privilege, as we have come tocall it, refers to whites' historical and contemporary advantages in access to quality education, decentjobs and liveable wages, homeownership, retirement benefits, wealth and so on . The followingquotation from a publication by Peggy Macintosh can be helpful n understanding what is meant bywhite privilege : As a white person I had been taught about racism that puts others at a disadvantage,but had been taught not to see one of its corollary aspects, white privilege, which puts me at anadvantage Whit e privilege is an invisible package of unearned assets which I can count on cashingn every day, but about which I was meant to .remain oblivious. This is followed by Africans with 19.8% representation, while Indiansmake up 8.3%, which is more than double their E P when compare d to Africansand Coloured within the BlackGroup. Colouredsmake up 5.1% of the representation at the Top Management level.

Male representation at 79.4% is almost four times that of females at this level. People with DisabHtties are lurkingbehind with1.5%of the representation at this level.

The comparative figures are that fewerthan 50 of black children are going onto pass matric and only 14 of thoseaged 20 to 24 are currently enrolled forhigher education.

This despite th e fact that the whit e share of total tertiary enrolment has dropped fromroughly 40% to 20 since 1994, while the black share has increased to 65 .

Between 1994 and 2012, the rate of unemployment among white people increased from3 t o 5.7%.

While this is a significant increase, the actual rate remains remarkably low by nationalstandards. For example, in 2012, 29 of black South Africans were unemployed. Black

people we re therefore five times more likely to be unemployed.

The white unemployment rate was low, even when compared to a host of internationalbenchmarks. In the US, for example, the rate in 2012 was 7.6 , in Britain 7.9% and inCanada 7.2%.

t first glance, these low levels of white unemployment stand at odds with the whiteexodus from the civil service and the shifting employment equity profiles of large

corporations.

This paradox is best explained by the renowned historian, Professor Hermann Giliom ee ,who notes in his book, The Afrikaners: In 1994, 75 of the white population earning

over RSOO 000 per year were formally employed, receiving salaries and bonuses.

By 2009, this figure had been completely reversed and 75 of whites in this incomecategory were self -employed, either as owners of a business or as consultants or

agents.

The point of whites turning to entrepreneurship can be further reinforced by data thatsuggests that, while a black university graduate is more likely than a white graduate tofind a job within 12 months of graduation, white graduates ar e four times more likely to

start and operate businesses.

It is important to note, however, that only 10% of white adult s fell into the RSOO 000 -plus-and-above income bracket in 2009, while 50 were estimated to rece ive an income

of less than R100 000 annually.

With increasing levels of education, high levels of entrepreneurship, and low levels o funemployment, it must follow that white poverty leve ls are low. South Africa has no

official poverty line.

We therefore take a monthly household-income level of less than S 000 as a benchmarkof relative poverty. Using this benchmark, the proportion of wh ite South Africans living inpoverty declined from approximately 2 in 1994 to less than 1 in 2012.

The figures for black South Africans were significantly higher, having declined from about

50 in 1994 to 45 by 2012.

This despite the fact that the roll-out of taxpayer-funded welfare grants to more than 15million mainly black South Africans saw the extent of desperate poverty, measured at 2(R18.50) a day, decline from a peak of 17 in 2002 to 5 in 2010.

With such high education, employment and po ve rty differentials eviden t high incomedifferentials must be expected.

The most striking way to point out such inequality is to measure how many cents a blackSouth African is likely to receive in income for every rand received by his whitecompatriot.

In 1994 , on a per capita basis, black South Africans co uld expect to receive approximately12 cents fGr every rand rec e ived by a white South African. In 2012, almo st 20 years intoour democracy, black South Africans were receiving only 13 cents for every rand receivedby white peopl e.

Here it must be explained that the key driver of such continued inequality is not whi t e

wealth but, rather, abysmal education a nd labour - market outcomes for black SouthAfricans.

We estimate that, on current trends, only 40 of black South African chi ld r en a re se t topass matric, and only 4 are set to pass maths in matric.

Likewise, the labour market absorption rate, which measures what share of the workingage population is employed , has fallen sharply for black South Africans since 19 9 4 andnow sits at just 36 .

The indicators cited in this article force two new conclusions about the white experiencesince democracy.

Firstly, whites have seen their education profile improve rapidly since apartheid endedand are today four times more likely to be in higher education than their blackcompatriots , who receive an appallingly poor standard of schooling.

Secondly, employment equity and empowerment policies have not drive n whites intounemployment or poverty on a significant scale. Wh ites resident in South Africa are morelikely to be employed than re side nts of the world 's leading economies .

While history will record that the 1994 transition liberated blacks from oppression, it isan important footnote of history that whites were also liberated .

They were liberated, first , from the gui lt and pariah s t a tu s that had been at t ac hed totheir support and enforcement of apartheid.

They were freed from the failing economy they had brought about in which low growthwas ironically curtailing improvements in their own living standards.

They were a lso unburdened from any se nse that the stat e would look after theirint e rests.

Herein lies one of the great paradoxes to emerge from the 19 94 transition: as the focusof governrrent policy turned to drive black economic advancement, so the wh'1tes were

driven into entrepreneur ship, which today explains their continued relative economic

Regarding the dates for serving papers in your point 4 we agree to that.

However, as regards your client and his obeying the interim order, we have evidence that he disobeyed the

order.As to the list of sponsors and business associates of Mr. Steve Hofineyr, he does not have a definitive list ofthese. At issue is the damages and hann he has suffered through the harassment by your client who has beenordered to desist from such, whether in relation to sponsors or associates already contacted or even new ones.
