Money, money, money

Read the following texts and answer the questions.

1. PoundThere used to be 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound. One pound, three shillings and sixpence would have been written as £1 3s 6d, but when spoken would probably have been expressed in shillings: twenty-three and six, meaning twenty-three shillings and sixpence.

Just think about that for a moment and then try and add £1 3s 6d and £5 18s 11d together! Wouldn't you rather have a decimal system!

Just for interest!

The £ represents pounds sterling and comes from L which stands for the Latin "libre".The s represents shillings and comes from the Latin "solidus". The d represents pence (the plural of penny) and comes from the Latin "denarius".

2. Dollar

3. Euro

How did the "old" money work in real terms?

To give you some idea of the relative value of these amounts in more recent times, one of my great-grandfathers was earning 11s (eleven shillings) a week as a farm labourer in 1896. He then moved to the nearby city (Norwich, Norfolk) and became a factory worker and earned £1 a week.

In 1946 my mother's first pay packet was thirty-seven and six (thirty-seven shillings and sixpence or £1 17s 6d) for being a shorthand typist.

An American explanation states that the '$' symbol was historically a combination of both letters representing this nation: US. In the early days of the United States, they would type a 'U' on a typewriter, then back-space and type an 'S' over the 'U' to designate U.S. Currency.

Another belief is that the '$' sign has been said to be based on the number 8. The Spanish eight-real coins were known as Spanish dollars. They circulated too alongside the currencies of the colonizing countries. These currencies were denominated in pounds, shillings and pence (£sd) and the Spanish dollar was "rated" at a particular value in the currency of each colony.

A special euro currency sign (€) was designed after a public survey had narrowed the original ten proposals down to two. The European Commission then chose the final design. The eventual winner was a design created by a team of four experts, who have not been officially named.

There are two sources available for the origin of the dollar, one linked to the $ sign and another to the word dollar.

The word dollar was introduced by the Dutch in the North-American colony. In the 17th century, the Dutch 'Leeuwendaalders' - or Liondollars - were also very popular in the English colonies; its value is 30 nickels . The origin of the Dutch word 'daalder,' quite similar in pronunciation to that of the word 'dollar,' is based on the German word 'taler.'

Nowadays We don’t use shilling anymore, it is replaced by the 5p coin, which is still worth 1/20th of a pound, because there are 100 new pence in a pound.
