New Beginnings and Change

As we move forward into the future inevitably there will be many new things in our lifeat St Kiaran's – hence the cover picture. As one who has been here as a member for

the last thirty years change has been much on my mind lately. So I would like to sharea few thoughts.

Change brings with it both uncertainty and opportunities. ladly for us our od is onewho changes things in our lives and circumstances. !e knows what is best for us and!e works all things according to !is perfect will in our personal lives as well as in !ischurch.

Some helpful Scriptures come to mind"Isaiah 30:21 # Whether you turn to the right or to the left  , your earswill hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it."

A comment on Romans 6:4 $Newness of life supposes newness of heart. %alking in Scripture stands for

the course and character of one&s life which must be new. %alk by new rules towardsnew ends from new principles. (ake new choices of direction. Choose new paths to

walk in new leaders to walk after new companions to walk with).

God grant me the serenityto accept the things I cannot change;

corage to change the things I can;and wisdom to !now the difference"

*et us embrace the future together with confidence

,ear St Kiaran&s (embers and Associates

It was most encouraging to see the e-cellent turn out on Sunday

(ay at the (orning Service at which the /ev (ike (uller preachedwith a view to a call. 0he 1acancy Committee met after the service

and agreed to e-tend a call to the /ev (ike (uller. 0he Session and

the 1acancy Committee met with (ike and his wife *ouise the daybefore. *ouise and their children 2ethro and 2essica accompanied

(ike to the morning service. 3erhaps if you were present you had achance to meet the family. If (ike accepts the call and the congregation agrees to it the

3resbytery of the %estern Cape needs to process the call.

If everything goes according to plan he should be able to commence his ministry at St Kiaran&s

from August 456. 3lease continue to pray about this and for (ike and his family.

A few days ago my wife ,enise and I went to see the film $Son of od). %e both felt that the film

was e-cellent. It even portrayed the /esurrection and Ascension.

Ascension ,ay falls on 0hursday 47 (ay while the Sunday following 2une is called $AscensionSunday). I hope to be with you on that Sunday for the Communion Service and I hope for a

congregational meeting after the morning service. I shall focus on the Ascension so I thought I

would give you a brief preview.

(any people have found the concept and event of the Ascension difficult to accept. !owever the

Ascension is one of the si- great salvation events – 0he Incarnation 8Christmas9 the Crucifi-ion

8ood :riday9 the /esurrection 8+aster Sunday9 the Ascension 8Ascension 0hursday9 3entecost

83entecost Sunday9 and the Second Coming of 2esus Christ 8date unknown9.*et me give a brief summary of the importance and meaning of the Ascension.

. 0he Ascension presents 2esus as the +-alted Son of od.

In /omans v 6 3aul tells us that 2esus Christ our *ord was $;designated the Son of od in poweraccording to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead;) So too the Ascension of

2esus Christ also proclaims him as the e-alted Son of od. It was 2esus& <Coronation&. =ne of the

Ascension hymns e-plains $olden harps are sounding>Angel voices ring>3early gates are

opened>=pened for the King>Christ the King of lory>2esus King of *ove>Is gone up in 0riumph>0ohis throne above).

4. 0he Ascension proves the Completion of Christ&s %ork on +arth.

On the Cross Jesus cried out “t is finished! the debt has been #aid. n a sense Christ$ssavingOn the Cross Jesus cried out “t is finished! the debt has been #aid. n a sense Christ$ssaving  work was co%#lete on the cross yet without Christ$swork was co%#lete on the cross yet without Christ$s

/esurrection Christ&s death would have faded into history. In the Ascension od the :ather is againsaying $0his is (y ?eloved Son in whom I am well pleased). 0he hymn writer puts it $All his work is

ended>2oyfully we sing>2esus has ascended>lory to our King). 0he Ascension made it clear to the

disciples that they would no longer see the /esurrected Christ on earth.

@. 0he Ascension prepares the entry of od&s Son to heaven.

In 2ohn 6" 4 and @ 2esus tells his disciples $In my :ather&s !ouse are many rooms" if it were notso would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you. And when I go and prepare a place

for you I will come again and take you to myself that where I am you may be also). As we would

prepare our home for an honoured guest so 2esus prepares heaven for Christian believers. !e alsocontinues to pray for them while in heaven $Intercessor :riend of Sinners +arth&s /edeemer pleadfor me).

6. 0he Ascension precedes the outpouring of od&s Spirit.

2esus promised before his Ascension. $?ut you shall receive power when the !oly Spirit has come

upon you and you shall be my witnesses in 2erusalem and in 2udea and Samaria and to the ends of

the earth). 0his was 2esus& promise to his disciples. In 2ohn B" 2esus said $Devertheless I tell

you the truthE it is to your advantage that I go away for if I do not go away the Counsellor will not

come to you" but if I go I will send him to you).

F. 0he Ascension proclaims our 1ictory in Christ. In +phesians "45 we read $;he 8od9 raised him 82esus9 from the dead and made him sit in the

heavenly places far above all rule and authority and power and dominion). Dot only is Christ in the

heavenly places but so are Christians in a spiritual sense. 0hey are more than conGuerors through

him who loved them 8/omans H"@9. 0hey are on the victory side.

B. 0he Ascension pre#figures Christ&s 0riumphant /eturn.

In Acts " the angel tells the disciples $0his 2esus who was taken from you into heaven will

come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven). Christians have looked forward to and

still look forward to the /eturn and ltimate 0riumph of 2esus Christ. $Amen Come *ord 2esus $

8/ev 44"459 is our cry.

Conclusion.2esus Christ is the Ascended *ord. %e need to trust !im alone as Saviour and *ord obey !im

rely on the !oly Spirit and !is power live victoriously and live as if 2esus Christ is coming back

any minute. !e might Just do so.

I am happy to report that Alpha continues to grow at :alse ?ay College.

,ue to time constraints – we only have half an hour with students each week – we have modified ourpresentations by discussing each $talk) over 4- sessions – talk one week with Guestions > discussions

the ne-t week. 0his is not ideal but as the saying goes $you work with what you have).

I can confirm that :alse ?ay College Student Alpha will be holding its $!oly Spirit %eekend) at

ROCKLANDS FAMILY CAMP

A gentle misty sunset coloured the sky as about 4F of usarrived at the Adventure Centre at

/ocklands – we immediately felt at peace removed from our daily lives as we watched the light

depart slowly from the mountains and the sea. 0he children were e-cited to claim their

accommodation and e-plore and soon found the trampoline. A delicious lasagne was followed by a

birthday cake for rica and immediately set the tone of the weekend" a time of rela-ed

togetherness of enJoyment of our superb surroundings new challenges and one another.

0here were activities planned for the evening but they were abandoned as we were all enJoying

being together catching up on conversation playing games or making music. 0he sounds of guitar and glockenspiel pervaded the

entire weekend contributing even further to the ambiance of peace. *ittle ones came to say good

night giving a hug to everyone. 0he ambiance of the camp had been created" we were one family

belonging to :ather od.

%hen the Saturday morning sun lit up the mountain behind us some of us were running taking a

dip in the pool or e-ercising – others were more leisurely about greeting the dayL A hike up the

mountainside again imprinted on us the glorious variation of creationE the rough roundness of hugegrey granite boulders versus the browns and yellows of sandstone faraway views of misty mountain

and the close beauty of fynbos and e-ploring it all in leisurely togetherness. ,ay visitors arrivedand it was time for worship time to give our hearts. 0he children had fun learning that 2esus went

to heaven by cloud 8unusual transport systemL9 and that he is always with us while #i!e enne

read 2ohn @ and focussed on 2esus< command to love one another. !e took us on an interestingdiscussion on what being <in community& means.

0ime to discover new talents new activities" there was a workshop to suit many interests and

needs" art dance music tomahawk throwing and archery. It nudges some of us out our comfort

ones – and again it was a time of acceptance fellowship and sharing. It was great to see howyoung and old played and laughed together. 0his spirit continued after lunch – some of us went to

e-plore the coastline and marvelled over geological pules and inGuisitive dassies others snooedknitted chatted and played. athy converted Guite a few of us to become $knitwhits) and create

sGuares for B blankets for (adiba ,ayL

0he play parachute provided fun for young and old and while the braai was progressing a few of us

battled for possession of land and riches in medieval Carcassonne. Pet another delicious meal was

followed by ice cream and in the evening three intrepid teams battled it out with a ?ible Gui –

Judging by the laughter it generated the battle was won by all.

As was predicted the weather changed on Sunday but it did not dampen our spirits especially not

after a sumptuous breakfast of bacon and eggs. It was wonderful to welcome the day visitors whobraved the wind and the rain – the lounge became Guite cosy with all the e-tra chairsL 0he children&s

lesson was based on 3salm @7 – od knows all about me – and ogether they $wrote) their own

song around that theme. (ike continued on his theme from the day before reading from *uke 5

about going out amongst the people. Ken :reeman led an intimate and meaningful communion –

and the spirit of intimacy and community continued afterwards over tea. 0he rain let up and two

year old *ily discovered the Joy of stomping in a muddy puddle while the older children enJoyed

playing running games in the brisk fresh air. It poured again at lunchtime and we had to dodge the

overflowing gutters and puddles when we leftL

It was an amaing weekend the sum much greater than its parts. %e all felt connected andreconnected loved and accepted. It was e-pressed unanimously that this should become a regular

event. So save up your shekels because ne-t year we will be going camping againL

A woman's daughter had asked the local minister to come and pray with her mother. %hen the

An empty chair sat beside her bed. 0he minister assumed that the woman had been informed of
