    I. Introduction to Korea

The Eyes of the World are on KoreaThe center of the world is gravitating towards Asia. The Korean Peninsula lies in the center of this

shift. China, a rising economic power, and Japan, one of Asias most powerful nations, lie to either sides of Korea. To the north lies resource-rich Russia, which acts as a bridge between Korea and Europe. The European Union is devoted to exchanges with Asia. Accordingly, the Asian economies centering on the Korean Peninsula will lead the world economy. Standing in the middle of East Asia, which will drive world politics and the global economy in the 21st century, Korea has drawn the attention of the international community as the hub nation of economic prosperity. Once the Siberian Railroad is completed Korea will play the role of building bridges between the East and West, and will become the departure point for spreading the hopes and dreams of the young people of the world.

Korea: Economic Development and IT SuperpowerFew nations in the world have achieved the spectacular economic growth Korea has achieved over

such a short period of time. Building the Miracle on the Han River upon the ruins left by the Korean War, Korea has become the worlds leading shipbuilder and steel exporter and has overtaken Japan in the export of semiconductors. Korean cars are driven all around the world and Korean smartphones and LED TVs are leading the world in high-end technology, demonstrating the miraculous economic growth Korea has achieved. Along with machinery, chemistry, shipbuilding and automobile industries, information communications industry in Korea is among the finest in the world. In particular, Korea ranks as worlds number one in information technologies and mobile communications. The number of private households with high-speed internet connection already exceeds 20 million and most Korean use the internet. The wireless internet network and IT system that allows people to easily access all corners of the world even on streets serves as proof of the level of technology in this nations powerful standing in information technologies. Many developing countries around the world use Koreas path to economic growth as a benchmark, as well as using it as a model for improving quality of life of their citizens.

Korea is Open to the WorldHaving never invaded its neighboring countries throughout its 5000 year long history, Korea stands

out as a messenger of peace in the international society. As the only country in the world which continues to suffer the pain of division, it is a country that loves peace more than any other country in the world. Once a country where the powers of capitalism and communism confronted each other during the Cold War between the East and West, the Korean Peninsula is now become the focus in the eyes of humanity as a geopolitical hub leading world peace in an era of reconciliation and cooperation. Korea has spread the message of peace through the 1988 Olympics, 2002 Soccer World Cup, and 2010 G20 Seoul Summit, as well as Pyeongchang Winter Olympics to be held in 2018. The international community is watching as Korea continues to work towards world peace in the future.

Korea has a higher level of safety than the OECD average, making it a safe country for foreign students to study in. With education as a primary social interest, Korea is especially friendly to students who come to study from abroad. Characterized by loyalty (chung) and filial piety (hyo), Koreas educational culture is founded on the mentality of loving the country and the morality of veneration of ones parents. Having the highest education fever in the world, Korea sincerely cares for the students, who come from abroad to study. The number of foreign students studying in Korea is nearing 100,000, and the number of tourists is also increasing every year.

Korea adopts a single-track education system in order to ensure that all Korean citizens may receive primary, secondary and tertiary education according to their ability without discrimination. Thus a unified education system is maintained, which currently adopts the 6-3-3-4 system. There are nine years of compulsory education, which includes six years of primary education and three years of middle school. Korean school semesters run from March to August in the first semester and from September to

February for the second semester. July to August is the summer vacation and December to February is the winter vacation.

    1. Pre-school EducationKindergarten is an educational institution for children from the age of three years until entry into

primary school. It aims to foster the harmonious development of mind and body by providing an educational environment suitable for child development through various game-centered learning activities.

    2. Primary and Secondary School EducationEducational institutions for conducting primary and secondary education include primary school,

middle school, high school, special school and other miscellaneous schools. The education purpose, duration and entry age for each of these schools are given below.

Primary school is aimed at conducting the most basic general education necessary for each citizen, which is free and compulsory. The duration of primary school is six years and the entry age is 5~7 years old.

Middle school is aimed at providing middle level education, building on the basic education received in primary school. The duration of middle school is three years and the entry age is 12~13 years old.

Building on the foundation of education received in middle school, high school aims to provide secondary education and basic specialist education. High schools are divided into general high schools, vocational high schools, and other high schools (foreign language, arts and physical education, science high schools, etc.). The duration of high school is three years and the entry age is 15~16 years old.

For persons needing special education due to physical, mental or intellectual impairments, there are special schools aimed at providing intellectual, functional and social adaptation education necessary for their personal development and social life, which corresponds to primary, middle and high school.

There are also various educational institutions and foreign schools for the children of foreigners staying in Korea or Koreans who have spent a period of time abroad, which provide education similar to, although outside of, the current 6-3-3-4 track system.

The percentage of primary school students advancing to middle school and middle school students advancing to high school is 99.9% and 99.6%, respectively, which reflects the high enthusiasm for education of Koreans.

basic requirements in order to extend the scope of university autonomy. By allowing the admission department of each university to autonomously set all standards for utilization and screening of documents such as student records, the national academic aptitude test, essay examinations, qualifications, recommendation letters, etc., the authority to select students of universities has been expanded. As of 2012, there are 434 universities in Korea. These include 183 universities proper, 147 vocational universities, 41 graduate schools, 9 industrial universities, 10 universities of education and 44 others.

    A. UniversitiesThe purpose of university education is to research profound academic theory and wide ranging using

Welcoming globalization, Korean universities are actively inviting foreign students to expand their international cooperation and exchange, and improve their international competitiveness. Accordingly, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology formed the Study Korea Project under which it set the target of attracting 200,000 foreign students by 2020. In order to realize this objective, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is promoting projects for expanding government scholarships, improving studying and living conditions for foreign students, building efficient administrative support systems, and so on. According to foreign student statistics, there are 86,878 foreign students from 230 countries around the world, studying in around 380 Korean universities as of April 1, 2012.

    1. Education Program

    A. Regular Semester ProgramThese courses involve attending classes in the regular semester program together with domestic

students over the regular spring and fall semesters. General courses are held in either Korean or a foreign language.

    B. Exchange Student ProgramMost Korean universities mutually exchange students based on exchange agreements with sister

universities. These exchange student programs allow for study at foreign universities for a set period. Students chosen as exchange students need to have grades and foreign language ability above a certain level.

    C. Vacation Period ProgramDuring the summer or winter break, foreign students may take classes, such as ordinary classes or

    Korean language classes.

    D. Lectures in EnglishAt present, universities with an interest in internationalizing university education are conducting

about 30% of their classes in English. The proportion of classes conducted in English is higher in graduate schools than in undergraduate studies. Some universities have established international faculties in which all the courses are taught in English.

    E. Korean Language CoursesMany universities run Korean language lectures for foreigners in language schools that they have

established as a part of the university. Short courses of 3~4 weeks are run with the goal of improving oral communication ability intensively over a short time period. Courses spread over a longer 10~40 week period try to improve study results by working on communication ability through activities related to real life, and broadening the understanding of Korean culture through parallel courses.

    III. Education of International Students

Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK)The Test of Proficiency in Korean is aimed at providing direction for the study of Korean to foreigners and

overseas Koreans who do not speak Korean as their native language. In addition, it aims to expand the diffusion of the Korean language by measuring the ability of students in the use of Korean and is subsequently useful for their study abroad or employment.

The official body in charge of TOPIK is the National Institute of International Education (www.niied.go.kr, T.82-2-3668-1339) and the bodies that hold the exam include Korean embassies, Korean Education Centers and TOPIK committees in each country.

Eligibility to take the exam extends to foreigners and overseas Korean who are not native speakers of Korean, including Korean language students, people wishing to study abroad at Korean or foreign universities, and people wishing to work for Korean companies or government bodies based in Korea or abroad.

The examination is held four times a year; in Korea in January and July, and in Korea and abroad in April and September. It is advertised at the beginning of each year in the Newspaper and on the National Institute of International Education website. The test has three different levels; Beginner (Levels 1 and 2), Intermediate (Levels 3 and 4) and Advanced (Levels 5 and 6). The passing grade (common to all levels) is based on the distribution of points (100 points) in each assessment criteria and can be found on the homepage (http://www.topik.go.kr).

    5. Finding Work

    A. Part-time WorkFor a foreign student to work part-time in Korea, one must be enrolled in a Bachelors, Masters or

Ph.D. course or a language course at language institutes and have completed six months of study (one semester). Permission to participate in activities uncertified for current sojourn status may then be obtained at the Immigration Bureau. Foreign students enrolled in a regular course of study may engage in part-time work of no more than 20 hours a week (30 hours a week for Masters and Ph.D. courses) during semester and unlimited work during vacation time. However, part-time work must not take priority over studies and it cannot be the sole source of income as it should be a supplementary source of income. To obtain part-time working permit, the signature of the advising professor and the foreign student advisor of the school must be obtained on the Recommendation for the part-time work of foreign student and submitted to the Immigration Bureau to obtain approval in advance. Care must be taken for working part-time without prior approval can result in cancellation of the student visa.

educational institutes equivalent to or higher than vocational universities, or have completed research courses in academic research organizations, and are in the process of seeking employment or wish to work as interns in firms, can change the sojourn status to seeking employment (D-10). Changing the sojourn status extends the length of stay by at least 6 months each time. Those with vocational Bachelors and Bachelors degrees are permitted a maximum of one year and those with Masters degrees or higher are permitted a maximum of two years of stay in Korea.

Changing Status of Sojourn to WorkingForeign students who have the student visa (D-2) and are eligible for applying for seeking employment

(D-10) or seeking employment (D-10) visas may change their sojourn status to working as professors, foreign language teachers, researchers, etc. As qualification documents need to be prepared specific for each sojourn status, students should pay a visit to the Immigration Bureau in advance and receive counseling to change the sojourn status.

Gold Card SystemThe Gold Card System is a service to facilitate employment of foreign high-tech professionals in Korea

who have graduated with degrees in IT, e-commerce (enterprise information system, e-business), new materials, transportation equipment, digital electronics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, environment and energy, and management of technology. It changes the sojourn status and allows individuals to continue their stay in Korea based on the new working regulations for foreign students.

    Andong National University

In 1947 Andong College of Education was founded; from this beginning, Andong National University was born. To be a central university in the province, all associates of ANU have continuously worked hard for over 65 years to grow and develop this university. However, information and globalization revolutions have pushed this university into a spiral of necessary competition. In order to be globally competitive, ANU offered itself a new mission to become The university with the highest level of education in Korea. In order to succeed in our mission, a practical strategy was proposed to become the university that best serves the students.

We have 15, 000 students in 54 different departments and majors in a vibrant environment conducive to excellence. Our engineering school is especially strong and highly ranked in Korea thanks to its proximity to Changwons large industrial complex. This complex includes not only major corporations such as Samsung and LG, but also over 2,000 other small and medium sized businesses. Because of this proximity to regional businesses, we have many industry/university cooperative projects. These positive relationships with local industries help us maintain the highest graduate employment rate among all universities in Korea.
