Welcome to the new school year and our bumper issue! There is something cosy about the days getting shorter. It helps us focus on the new activities we’d like to start or continue. In this issue we bring you our ’pull-out’ Clubs and Classes Directory, updated for 2010-2011.

We like to make the list as comprehensive as possible, so if there are clubs or courses we’ve left out, do tell us (see contact details opposite). We’ll add new courses to the list on the website.

On the Back To School theme, we thought you’d like an update on the International Baccalaureate; that time will approach all too quickly! See page 20 for a ’heads up’ on what some local schools are starting to offer.

Meanwhile, we have masses of treats in store for Halloween and the whole of the October half term – see pages 24-28!

are you a sMaRt parker?

Dropping the kids off at school can be a real challenge, but parking outside schools can create an even bigger problem. All too often we don’t think it will matter if we quickly stop on the zigzags or on the pavements outside the school, but the truth is these types of parking practices are often inconsiderate and can cause accidents.

Drive SMARt is a year-long initiative between Surrey County Council and Surrey Police, aimed at tackling anti-social driving. Rounding off the first year of the campaign, the focus will be on parking and how we can all make a difference by parking sensibly and thinking of others.

Feedback from neighbourhood surveys and panels highlights bad parking as one of the anti-social driving behaviours that causes most concern, from parking on zigzags, curbs, pavements and verges through to blocking driveways, bad parking really can make peoples lives a misery.

Surrey Waste Partnership (Surrey County Council working with the 11 district and borough councils in the county) is running Surrey’s own Love Food Hate Waste campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste.

The campaign aims to show Surrey families how they could save up to £50 a month on their food shopping bill, by encouraging families to stop and think about the food they buy or cook that ends up in the bin.

Food waste is a significant issue in the county and it’s vital that the amount being generated is reduced. The energy, water and packaging resources used in food production, transportation and storage all go to waste when perfectly good food is thrown away.

Why do we throw away food?• Too much food has been cooked or prepared

(happens with pasta and rice all the time).• Food hasn’t been used in time (fruit and veg

are a typical example because they’ve gone off in the fruit bowl or in the fridge).

• Food hasn’t been eaten before it goes past its use-by date.

Why does food not get eaten in time?• Plans change.• We forget what food we have in the cupboards.• Food is not stored properly. • We don’t know how best to use our leftovers.

Shopping, cooking and eating habits are hard to change, but the good news is that by doing some easy everyday things in the home you can waste less food, which is a benefit to your pocket and the environment too.

Shop smart• Before you do your next big shop, check what

you have left, be creative and try inventing something new with the food you already have.

• Make a shopping list to plan ahead.• Buy your food loose where possible to avoid

buying more than you need.

Store it, don’t waste it • Keep an eye on the ‘best before’ and ‘use by’

dates.• Keep your fridge, freezer and cupboard

stocked with basic food staples so you can use them with leftover vegetables, salad or meat.

• Store food properly – preserve and your food will live extra days, weeks and even months

• Keep the fridge at a cool 1 - 5 degrees and chilled food will stay fresh for longer.

• Freeze food that won’t get eaten in time.

Did you know?• The optimum freezer temperature for preserving

food quality is -18°C.• Fresh food can be frozen at any point up to the use-

by date and remain safe.• There is no time limit to how long food can be safely

frozen for - as long as it is kept at -18°C and remains properly frozen, it will not become unsafe.

Cook less• Weighing and measuring food helps with

achieving perfect portions, removing the guesswork.

• There are many cooking utensils that can help – spaghetti measure, tablespoon, measuring spoon, weighing scales.

• If you do make too much, use leftovers for lunch the next day or freeze and work it into next week’s meals.

Mums and flexible workingJayne Peters tells us how she found a good flexible working solution with Phoenix trading I was first introduced to Phoenix Trading by a neighbour. She dropped a catalogue through my door and I immediately welcomed the idea of buying fantastic cards at low prices! Having placed a number of orders with every new range she asked me if I would like to set up my own business. Whilst I loved the product, I was quite nervous. But the business pack made me realise that I was being offered a brilliant opportunity to have my own business and run it with no pressure or targets. Phoenix Traders can develop a useful part-time income or develop a long-term, full-time business, depending on you. I feel I have found a job that really suits me. At the same time it is rewarding financially and socially. Everyone needs greeting cards, so people are receptive to the value Phoenix cards provide. I am now beginning to build a team, which means offering advice and support to those wanting to start their own business. It is so important to have someone with experience to guide you; I still find my own sponsor’s help invaluable. An added delight to my Phoenix Trading business is that I am able to help raise money for charities and local groups. Many of my friends now support me, and I, in turn, help them to raise money for charities of their choice. Christmas is approaching, an exciting time with many new products. The range in my opinion is the best yet! You can contact Jayne on 07834 16 07 71 [email protected]

homeopathy

9

Homeopathy is a form of complementary medicine developed in the 1800’s, but with principles dating back thousands of years. Remedies are derived from plants, minerals and substances diluted to a minute dose. Homeopathy is based on observations that substances that cause symptoms can also be used to cure them - “like cures like”, by stimulating the body’s own healing system. Mental, emotional and physical ailments whether acute, reccurring or chronic can be treated. Homeopathy is particularly successful with babies and children.Homeopathy offers help for acute conditions such as colds, childhood diseases and colic to more chronic problems such as eczema, asthma, hay fever and bedwetting. For adults, homeopathy can be used for hormonal imbalances resulting in PMT, pregnancy issues and also for birth itself.

Asthma/Allergies – A Case StudyI began treating Joe when he was four. He had suffered with asthma and allergies since he was a year old and was taking steroids daily. Having had meningitis at 7

months, with 3 months on a ventilator, his lungs and immune system were severely damaged. Most of Joe’s life had been spent on antibiotics and steroids fighting reccurring chest infections. It was not unusual for Joe to visit the A&E department 3 times a month for asthma attacks. From his first appointment, Joe was sent home with remedies to help strengthen his lungs and for his asthma attacks. Homeopathic remedies are placed on sugar pills, so children find them easy to take.Six weeks later Joe’s mum noted that he had had only one asthma attack and had been able to go swimming for the first time in years. His mood, sleep and appetite had also all improved and most importantly, Joe hadn’t missed a single day at school through illness!Over the next 7 months, Joe’s health continued to improve, with the odd cold being addressed with further remedies and ongoing constitutional prescribing – the use of a remedy that fits the person as a whole to improve their general level of health and wellbeing.

holidays

Two trends are noticeable in family holidays – first, specialist companies are offering parents a hassle-free holiday by providing all the services that your little one has come to expect; second, holidays that emphasise outdoor activities – camping or creatively designed breaks for families to learn to enjoy the great outdoors together. Sussex Wildlife Trust has teamed up with the Youth Hostel Association to offer adventurous overnight nearby stays in September and October with a wildlife emphasis. Truleigh Hill Youth Hostel on the South Downs by Shoreham supplies the backdrop for bracing walks and natural history lessons at Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Henfield. Stay there from 25-26 September for £47 per adult and £39 per child (<17yrs) to include accommodation and breakfast, lunch and evening meal.

Other weekends are planned for October, including one under tents. And there is an afternoon during half-term designed for disabled children and siblings, with all paths OK for wheelchair users, exploring the local woods. There are age restrictions, children must be accompanied and booking is essential. You can contact the SWT on 01273 497561 for more information or to book. What to wear for these autumn breaks? Good outerwear means you can go out in any weather. Polarn O Pyret has

designed a layers concept for coats and outerwear: water repellent, breathable yet windproof fleece jackets that are perfect for September become a cosy middle layer under a waterproof coat in mid-winter. Polarn O. Pyret’s new Fleece Jacket is water repellent, wind proof yet breathable and never bobbles. www.polarnopyret.com Having contemplated autumn days, I’m almost ready to start thinking about next summer! We’ve discovered a few companies that deliver a brilliant service to parents – all driven by the vision of the parents who started the companies.

sUMMER at thE sEasIDEFor the seaside, we’ve already mentioned Recommended Family Holidays, offering everything you could possibly need in UK, Ireland and France. If you are contemplating further afield, the same high standards will apply in Cyprus, with Aztec Villas.Tracy Broadhurst set up Aztec Villas after buying a villa in Cyprus herself. She realised there was a gap in the marketa for a company that provided family friendly, stylishly designed holiday accommodation in Cyprus.

Tracy says “Here at Aztec Villas, we want to make your holiday as calm and hassle-free as possible. Every villa and apartment we add to our portfolio has been personally

visited and vetted by us. They must be equipped with all the family friendly “must haves” such as high chairs, stair gates, cot beds, pool/beach toys, Play Stations, DVDs, plus bed linen, bath/hand and pool/beach towels (to save you space in your luggage!), fully equipped

kitchens and stylish furnishings.” The point about the luggage is a good one – especially with so many surcharges applying at airports for every extra gram in your suitcase!

“We really want to take the stress away from organising a family holiday,” said Tracy, “so if you haven’t got time to organise flights, airport transfers, excursions etc we can do that for you. We even recently sourced appropriate formula milk for a child who had an allergy to cow’s milk.” That sort of attention to detail is much appreciated by any family struggling to enjoy a family holiday and keep all the kids happy.

sUMMER IN thE MoUNtaINs If beaches aren’t your thing, then I can report from first-hand experience that summer in the Alps is invigorating, sunny and relaxing at the same time! While near Geneva in Morzine, France, I visited Chilly Powder’s chalets and here, too, owners Francesca and Paul are always willing to go ‘the extra mile’ to ensure their guests are welcome, well fed and that their children are well looked after too - with ‘tea time’ for kids allowing parents to settle them into bed every evening before joining the other adult guests for a convivial dinner, full of conversation about great plans for the next day’s activities. Activities might be with the kids or not; children can stay in the crèche while parents have a few hours exploring the mountains and lakes, shopping or just lazing by the hot tub. Morzine has a special ‘Euro’ Multi Pass in the summer costing 1E per day, meaning that all the cable cars (and local swimming pools) are then FREE! Morzine and the Portes du Soleil villages will be offering the same pass next year, which opens up many adventures on the slopes.

it’s fun to find an activity to do together with your baby. As soon as s/he is born, the new world of outings and activities begins. Many new mums will have already exposed their unborn children to the rhythm of music. Exposure to music helps to ‘wire up’ the brain, encouraging neural connections, and this may be effective even in the womb. The first classes that welcome babies are those that combine music with simple, stimulating experiences. Bubbles, bells, coloured streamers and puppets are used alongside songs and rhymes. Even just listening to music starts the long process of cognitive development: it activates areas in the brain used for speech, abstract reason and spatial awareness. Listening to the patterns in music – its rhythm and pitch – are thought to enhance the ability to visualize and manipulate shapes and objects in your mind, which helps develop mathematical skills, too. From just a few months old, there are classes that involve movement and, soon after, your baby will be able to join in by singing, too! Active participation in singing, playing instruments or dancing all strengthen a child’s neural pathways, helping them to fulfill their intellectual capability. It’s fun, too and, as Nick Bell of Jo Jingles says, ‘Children learn better and faster when they are enjoying learning.’ Nursery rhymes play an important role in a child’s ability to sound out and master new words, helping them to read and spell as they get older. When rhymes are learned with music, it’s easier to learn the sequences of words and phrases. As your little one starts to walk, a whole host of music and movement activities are out there, which together help your child learn language skills, motor skills, social skills and co-ordination. These classes also provide the basis for building many relationships as well as self-esteem and confidence. Do call the teachers listed here: they will be happy to explain in more detail how their class can help your child. And you’ll soon be enjoying the company of other new mums, and finding out how much that helps you too!

Dream Play for Active Learning in DorkingAt Active learning Nurseries, Music and Performing Arts are central to the learning experience of children right from the start. For 2010 their new challenge has been for

the ‘Laser’ groups (3-5 year olds) from all Active Learning Nurseries to present a one-off musical performance of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at the Unicorn Theatre in London Bridge. The play formed an integral part of the children’s learning and development for several months. The action on stage was driven purely by the children’s imagination and

parents shared in their children’s pride at their performances.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma was first taught in 1968 and has grown considerably as a form of sixth-form education – both nationally and internationally and an increasing number of schools, both independent and state, now offer it. Box Hill School is one of the few schools in East Surrey to have made the move, but other schools in Surrey also offer the IB; Kings College in Guildford and King Edward’s School in Witley for example, whilst Charterhouse School and Christ’s Hospital in Horsham aim to start delivering the programme from 2011.

As a qualification, the International Baccalaureate overcomes one major criticism of A Levels; it does not require students to specialise too

early. This broad range of skills - competence in a foreign language for instance - appeals to university registrars and prospective employers.

One of the myths about IB is that is only for the brightest, but this is a misrepresentation of the facts.

The academic level in a student’s three Higher Level subjects equates to that of three A Levels and their three Standard Level subjects are pitched somewhere between GCSE and AS level. However, as one student has said “it is easier to manage your time with the IB as you learn from the start that you can’t leave things until the last minute.” It is this work ethic that universities and employers will demand and the structure of the IB course and the guidance given throughout will help students develop these valuable time-management skills.

The IB however is not all work and no play: quite the contrary, as it expects students to complete CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) hours over the course. This means that involvement in sport, the performing and creative arts and community service, or service of any kind, is recognised and valued.

Other useful and complementary elements of the programme include Theory of Knowledge where students discuss and investigate the basis of knowledge and learning, and develop the ability to reflect critically on the role that knowledge plays in a global society.

As with A Levels the IB might not be for every student, but it is certainly an option that should be seriously considered.

Maths tips for Parents Maths is the school subject that worries parents the most, mostly because today’s methods look completely different from how we learned. Maths for Mums & Dads (Square Peg, £10.99) is packed with explanations, games and fun insights to bring back your own confidence about maths and help children with theirs. Here are some tips from the book:

1. Make maths part of your everyday interactions with your child. Ask your child to help you to work out the change at the shop, to check how many minutes until the train is due, weigh ingredients etc.

2. Learn about the new methods being taught, particularly the grid method for multiplication and chunking for division. These are more connected to the methods you learned than you might think.

3. Play board games involving dice and money with your child. Car games such as pub cricket are great for maths interaction, too.

4. Learn some mathematical magic tricks (you’ll find plenty in the book). Children love magic!

5. When helping with homework, be patient. Children rarely ‘get it’ immediately. If things are getting fraught, take a break. Often the best way to tackle a problem is to sleep on it.

6. Don’t say “I was always hopeless at maths”. It’s usually not true, and it can make your child think maths isn’t worth the effort.

Maths for Mums & Dads (published Jan 2010) by Rob Eastaway and Mike Askew.
