Hong Kong Non-Woven (Hong Kong Non-Woven Fabric Ind. Co., Ltd.) is a leading fiberfill and insulation manufacturer based in Hong Kong with production facilities in Hong Kong and China. This is our first GRI report and we are reporting on the year of 2010, and there will be no limitation on the scope or bound-ary of this report. We do not have any joint venture, subsidiary, leased facility, outsourced operation, and other entities that can significantly affect comparability from period and/or between organizations. We intend to generate a GRI report annually as a means of improving communication with our stakeholders in terms of our contributions as well as to share our sustainability story among the peers in order to promote triple-bottom-line practices among the industry.

Snowflake is a strong resemblance of the cold weather that we are determined to protect the users against, and the stunning natu-ral wonder from mother earth. Unfortunately with the alarming rate of global warming we are witnessing a drastic shrinkage of the Arctic ice cap, which caused the increase of global tempera-ture, and the decrease of habitat for both human as well as other animals. Serving the outdoor industry, we’ve learned to appreci-ate and embrace these gifts from nature. By selecting Snowflake as the theme of this report we hope to remind our audience the beauty of our planet, and that it is important to start preserving now before it is too late.

When determining our annual corporate strategy, the top man-agement carefully considers all the angles of our stakeholders’ concerns so as to ensure we achieve our financial targets while being responsible environmentally and socially. Deriving targets down in the business units level basing on this strategy and con-stantly driving individuals in achieving beyond the expectations is what we called 361° approach to Triple Bottom Line Management.

STATEMENT FROM HEAD OF SUSTAINABILITY可持續發展部門總監致辭

HKNW has always been dedicated to sustainability since its founding in 1969, where we employ the use of solvent free chemicals to reduce water pollution. We implemented our own close-loop system in 1973 to reuse and up-cycle unutilized ma-terials during production. Together, we define our definition of "Reduce, reuse, and recycle" into our corporate culture. Little we are, we realized that we may not be the only leading surviving eco-conscious practitioner with our accolades and contribution. We believe in sharing, for it helps to build cohesion among peers in the industry and it helps with strengthening the overall com-petitiveness within a country or a territory. With the use of GRI reporting, we are allowed to share our niche and perspective on an annual basis, to bring awareness to other SME, and to encour-age sustainability. While it is important to fulfill various market demands, it is equally important to share our sustainability prac-tices with peers to add up our regional competitive edge through times of financial crisis, increasing material cost, and increasing labor wages etc.

With the aggregated shortage in resources, currency deprecia-tion, and the weakening flat world global economy, consumption will remain conservative while environmental awareness and social issues reaches new height. Together with the rising cost in labor and raw materials, the good old days of being the “World’s Factory” has long been gone. We believe this is the end of the de-flation decade.

Challenges can always turn into opportunity so long as our bot-tom-line is aligned. It is our principle to be innovative in process transformation to maneuver and to cope with the ever-changing world. We believe that the new trend of conservative spending means consumers are pulling back from mass-consumerism. Only quality products with high performance value with renewa-bility features such as recycled content and eco-friendly processes will be consumed.

To continue our eco-conscious values into the new era, operation excellence will continue to be the backbone of our bottom-line management, where we continue to explore avenues to reduce, reuse and recycle our own leftovers. We are also targeting to be certified by Bluesign® and also Low Carbon Manufacturing Pro-gramme (LCMP) from WWF® by the end of year 2011.

AND BEYOND未來展望

In the future, we will continue to increase our dedication to sustainability. Internally, we will reinstate Train﹣the﹣trainer programs to further promote sustainable practices. We are also reengineering our process to reduce input and output waste. Externally, we are planning to expand business in China to decrease dependency on the US market and to ease currency risk. Meanwhile, we will begin collaboration with education institutes to educate the next generation. With a proactive management mindset in the corporate culture, along with integrity instilled in each of our business units, we will continue to “Exceed your Expectation.”

THE STORY OF FIBERFILL聚酯棉的故事

Keeping warm is fundamental to enjoy all outdoor and recrea-tional activities, whether it is to heat up when one is wet, or to stay warm when one is cold. There are natural and synthetic insu-lations available. They can be found in outerwear such as jackets and pants; in accessories such as gloves and boots, and also in equipment such as sleeping bags and camping mattresses.

Traditionally, down is the only insulation component, basing on fill power to define various grades of down to provide adequate comfort and heat preservation. As a part of the outdoor industry, we enjoy the beauty of our mother nature and yet as creators of avenues to explore the greater outdoor. We certainly hate to see Mother Nature being damaged. It has already been the truth that our eco-system is challenged by greenhouse gas, water pollution, and global warming. Today, we have learned to not only enjoy the outdoor, but we are learning to find ways to protect the outdoor and to preserve it. Ultimately, the industry will also sustain.

Down is the “natural” solution to insulation. It is the under-coat of ducks and geese, and is in a form of light-as-air clusters. It had been the most popular material for insulation as it has excel-lent heat preservation performance, and at the same time very lightweight. However, down looses its insulation value when in contact with moist or water, and takes a long time to dry. This restricts the applicability of down, as a majority of outdoor activi-ties involves contact with water or ice. Moreover, the process of producing down involves large amount of hot water and chemi-cals for disinfection. The most inconvenient truth is the process of extracting down involves cruelly plucking them from ducks and geese. Although some of them were plucked only when birds slaughtered for their meat or liver, a majority of them were plucked from live birds every six months for better productiv-ity. Be sure that no painkillers are provided for the birds. The unutilization rate of down is very low. Only the softer feathers underneath the exterior feathers are classified as down. It is said that it takes 75 geese to create one single down comforter. This is why down is so expensive, as it has to cover the limited produc-tivity and all the wastes. As global weather becomes harsher by the year, the demand for all-conditional insulation is no longer limited to the outdoor enthusiasts but also the common people who cannot afford expensive down. Together with the pollution created throughout the disinfection process and the cruelty of the down production process cast Hong Kong Non-Woven to look for a second option.

保暖是享受戶外活動的基礎。無論潮濕或者寒冷,都需要保持溫

暖舒適。有很多天然的和合成的保溫材料可供我們選擇。總而言

之,到處可見其蹤影,外衣例如外套和褲子,配件例如手套和靴

子,裝備例如睡袋和露營墊等。

傳統的方式是採用羽絨作為保溫材料,藉著它的層層空間來蓄熱

保暖。作為戶外產業的一部分,我們享受大自然的美景,同時也

竭 盡 所 能 去 探 索 更 廣 袤 的 戶 外 世 界。 我 們 不 樂 見 大 自 然 備 受 摧

殘。眾所周知我們的生態系統正面臨溫室效應、水污染和全球暖

化的挑戰。今天,我們不僅要學習享受戶外生活,更要尋找方法

保護環境。最終產業也可得延續。

羽絨是“天然”及最受歡迎的隔熱材料,它是鴨和鵝的底層絨毛,

輕如空氣。以其保溫和輕巧而聞名。不過,當遇潮濕的環境時,

羽絨的保溫性能下降,且不易乾。這限制了羽絨在戶外的應用,

因為大部分的戶外運動要面對水或冰的挑戰。最不人道的還要數

的 是 拔 毛 過 程。 雖 然 有 些 是 食 用 禽 類 的 副 產 品, 但 大 多 數 是 每

6 個月從活的禽類身上拔毛以獲得更高的產量。當中的過程極度

殘忍及痛楚,對於禽類來說是生命中無法承受之重。羽絨的實用

率很低。只有貼近皮膚的底層絨毛才能算作羽絨。據說 75 只鵝

的絨毛才能做成一張羽絨被。此外,在加工過程中還需要大量的

水和化學品進行殺菌處理。這就是為什麼羽絨那麼貴,因為產量

有限且浪費很大。隨著全球氣候日漸極端化,對於保溫材料的需

求並不僅限於戶外愛好者,還有很多負擔不起昂貴羽絨的普羅大

眾也有保暖的需求。鑒於此,香島纖維工業有限公司放眼其他選

擇。

This is when we turn our attention to synthetic fiber. Synthetic fiber is an alternative that offers close, if not similar, insulation value as down. It repels moisture from condensation so it will not loose its insulation value when contact with water, and is quicker to dry. It is “cruelty free” as it is polyester based so it does not come from a live source. Although the performance of syn-thetic fiber cannot completely imitate down and production pro-cess is not pollution free, the flexibility in material use, design, and production allows great potential for improvement.

Hong Kong Non-Woven has been committed to improving syn-thetic fiber. Since our founding in 1969, we had been using water-based chemicals to significantly reduce pollution during produc-tion. We had achieved major breakthroughs in synthetic fiber’s insulation value through three-dimensional structural engineer-ing to match and to exceed the insulation value of down, while preserving the advantage of being all-conditional. We pioneered the first closed loop system in 1973 to reduce and to reuse fiber unutilized materials in production. We introduced eco-friendly synthetic insulation by replacing oil-based materials with recy-cled materials from used PET bottles. And along these years we continuously reinvented our production facility to improve effi-ciency that allows insulation at competitive prices as well as to re-duce carbon emission. With over 40 years of continuous research to take on challenges unconditionally to deliver value-added in-novations to the niche market, we have unlocked a new territory for premium synthetic market.

CHEMICALS AND WATER MANAGEMENT化學品和污水管理

Hong Kong Nonwoven has been using water based acrylic adhe-sives in the production process since 1969. Water is also recycled in the processes through precipitation to reducing Wastage. We are one of the first fiberfill companies to have processes us-ing thermal bonded fibers since 1989. We are also one of few companies that received Nike Global Water Program Blue Rat-ing.

ENERGY CONSERVATION節省能源

Our facilities has been specially designed to maximize utilization of natural energy, including extra large window for more natural lightings and insulated walls together with inverter air condi-tioning system to minimize need for energy consumption up to 45%. The production management system is just in time with ERP integration resulting in energy conservation.

從 1969 年開始,我們已開始在生產過程中使用水溶性的壓克力

膠。生產過程中的水經過收集沉澱之後再迴圈利用以減少污水排

我們公司特別使用了能盡量利用天然資源的設計,包括採用特大

的窗櫺設計來善用外來光線還有保溫和變頻式衡溫系統來有效節

省 45% 的能源需求。ERP 中整合的生產管理系統實現了無間斷生

產從而達到能源的節約。

We are devoted to create a harmonious working environment for our workers to maintain a healthy work life balance. On top of satisfying all legal requirements, we also maintain close rela-tionship with them and their families. As a result, we are able to enjoy increased productivity and loyalty.

INDUSTRY CONTRIBUTION業界貢獻

Through open source collaboration with other industry players, we have learned that one single company or industry cannot change the world. Therefore, we are also dedicated to promote sustainable practices among the industry. Being the Director of the Hong Kong Intimate Apparel Industries’ Association (HKIAIA), we partnered with the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) to develop a Smart Lamination machine that allows fabric suppliers to laminate in house. This will significantly reduce greenhouse gas by eliminating the transportation needs via outsourcing, while improving regional competitiveness at the same time. This machine is expected to be available in 2012.

Across the value chain, we are an executive committee member in the sustainable peer group Sustainable Fashion Business Con-sortium (SFBC) to share our experience in sustainability among the industry, the supply chain, and the government. RECYCLING循環再用

Since 1994 recycled polyester from post consumer PET bottles has been used. The production processes are defined around minimal waste with closed loop production since 1973. Today, the company is one of the only international members in the Te-ijin’s ECO CIRCLE® Garment Accessories Association. The offices in China extensively use recycled materials (Orientated Strand Board) in pillars, walls, partitions, doors, bookshelves and furni-ture. The paints used are formaldehyde free water based in line with environmental friendly procedures.

The Outdoor Innovation Award 2009 for products of high eco-logical and sustainable value was awarded to the UK Mountain-eering brand Mountain Equipment (www.mountainequipment.co.uk) for its Earthrise II Sleeping Bag, the first fully recycled and recyclable sleeping bag made by HK Non-Woven’s fiberfill using Teijin’s ECOPET™ fiber. This is the first time a sleeping bag has been introduced that is made from recycled and recyclable com-ponents.

This collaboration has been a joint effort of HK Non-Woven’s ex-pertise in fiberfill technology, Mountain Equipment and Teijin. Thanks to these kinds of collaboration, we will see more prod-ucts in the Outdoor market made with recycled and recyclable components. The award is a recognition of the technical and development expertise of the three parties and the fact that recy-cled products are able to meet the technical and quality standard demanded today.

Traditional fiberfill has limited insulation value because con-ventional structure is monotonic and lacks combination. Our advanced fiberfill is able to capture features from different fib-ers and generate superior performance through engineering its structure. As a result, we are able to not only imitate the perfor-mance of down, but also customize fiberfill for various environ-ments. Our products can be categorized as below:

PERFORMANCE FIBERFILL功能性聚酯棉

By mixing various types of polyesters fibers, one can generate a thin sheet of non-woven layer. Stacking the many layers together and going through various processing procedure results in a non-woven structure in the form of a padding roll. The inter-networking of the fibers in the padding roll generates a lot of “air pockets”. Such volume of space acts as an air trap, slows down the air movement between from one side of the fiberfill to the other. The trapping of warm air in the “air pockets” allows for the exchange of heat energy between the warm air and the fiberfill structure. As a result, the advance fiberfill is able to act as a heat container/reservoir and thus being a very effective insula-tion material for specific end uses.

RECYCLED FIBERFILL再生聚酯棉

Through decades of partnerships with our strategic fiber sup-pliers, we have successfully developed a new material made completely from PET bottles, which opens up the entire source from post-consumer products to help alleviate the dependency of deriving an abundant amount of oil to produce virgin polyes-ter. This new post-consumer recycled PET polyester fiber has the potential to deliver performance as good as virgin fiber. When applying it into our proprietary engineering processes, we bring to the market performance fiberfill with 30% recycled content in 1994, and up to 100% by 1999 without sacrificing quality. This is a result of passion and commitment to sustainability that we take pride in our engineering process.

This is a new chapter in our sustainability path, which integrated our closed-loop production mindset of reusing our production waste to a cradle-to-cradle solution by converting post-consumer products into useful and affordable material again.

傳統的聚酯棉由於用料單一且結構缺乏多樣性,導致其保溫度有

限。我們的高級聚酯棉能夠集合各種纖維之所長,並通過改變其

結構而獲得優良的性能。因此,我們不僅能模仿羽絨的性能,並

The major source of energy comes from electricity provided by the government. However in line with the China government policy of limiting electricity supply, which we experience 3 days a week without energy supply, we have to rely on Diesel generators to maintain our production operation. Total energy consump-tion for the year 2010 as below:

Major usage of water in our production is to formulate the glue substrate, which is used to bond the fibers together. This requires water with high purity that can only be guaranteed in the water extracted from underground. Besides production, we also con-sumes water for normal living in our staff dormitory and office area. Estimated water consumption for the year 2010 is 8,400m3.

MATERIAL選料

In 2010, we have produced a total volume of 9,123,396m2 of fiberfill. In which, 65% of them are coming from recycled polyes-ter.

HKNW employs a 4-level safety inspection procedure to ensure all of our products are safe. First, input materials are being in-spected upon arrival to ensure no small parts and sharp objects inside. Secondly, production facilities are inspected daily, with all sharp objects being recorded during operation. Thirdly, finished products will go through metal detectors to ensure no sharp met-als being left in product before packing. Finally, all our products are tested by a third-party laboratory to ensure chemical content contains no harmful substance.
