When planning your schedule for next year, your counselor will perform a “credit check” and discuss your remaining graduation requirements. During a conference, your counselor will discuss your abilities (strengths and weaknesses) and your future goals. This information will be used to select courses which provide the training you need to realize your hopes and ambitions. You will also be assigned an advisor, who is one of the faculty members in your Center. Your advisor will keep in touch with you and assist you in all school matters. You should discuss your high school program with that advisor. He/she will remain your advisor for your entire high school career.

EARLY ENTRANCE & DUAL CREDIT

“Early Entrance” allows students at Brooke High School to have the opportunity to begin a college education while in high school. This program is for dedicated students who wish to begin completing college classes “early.” In order to participate, students must meet the minimum admission criteria for West Virginia Northern Community College, or successfully pass a placement test. We are proud to partner with West Virginia Northern Community College to provide this additional opportunity for our students. West Virginia Northern Community College offers the discounted tuition rate of $25 per credit hour for high school students participating in the Early Entrance program. This fee applies to Dual Enrollment courses, Distance Learning courses, and classes taken on any of the three West Virginia Northern Community College campuses.

While at Brooke High School, students may earn both high school and college credit for some courses designated as “Dual Enrollment” courses. These courses are taught by Brooke High School faculty, who are qualified to teach at the college level. High school and college credit is offered in select classes, based on the content standards presented in each class. New additions this year include College English 11 (up to 6 college credits), College English 12 (up to 6 college credits), and College Public Speaking (3 college credits). In addition, students may enroll in “Distance Education” courses at West Virginia Northern Community College. Time can be built into a student’s schedule to take an online course individually, or an entire class section can be created for multiple students taking the same course. A student may even enroll for an online course and complete the requirements entirely outside the school environment. Dual credit may be awarded depending on the standards covered during the course. Also, students may attend classes on any of the West Virginia Northern Community College campuses outside of school hours. This may be during the evening, or in the summer. Once again, dual credit may be awarded depending on the standards covered during the course. Students are still eligible for the discounted tuition rate during the summer after graduation. Brooke High School is also partnering with West Virginia University and Bethany College to provide dual enrollment opportunities for specific courses in the Mathematics Department.

WEST VIRGINIA VIRTUAL SCHOOL Advanced students, who are dedicated to their studies have the opportunities to pursue electives not offered by Brooke High School. Students pursuing coursework through the West Virginia Virtual School must be self-motivated. These courses have strict admission requirements and require work to be completed outside of the school day. Once enrolled, students work in an independent environment. After 28 days of enrollment, students cannot withdraw without receiving a grade of “F.” Tuition may be covered through the West Virginia Virtual School, depending on funding.

PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP The West Virginia PROMISE (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence) Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship program that is designed to make college affordable for all qualified West Virginia Students. The scholarship covers full college tuition at any State college or university or provides the equivalent amount toward college tuition at a private college in West Virginia. Graduates who complete high school with a 3.0 GPA in the “core subjects” of English, math, science, and social studies, as well as an overall 3.0 GPA in all combined course work, and who meet scoring requirements on college entrance exams are eligible. Current criterion are a minimum of a 22 composite score on the ACT with a minimum of a 20 on all the subtests in one test administration OR an SAT combined score of 1020 with a minimum subtest score of 490 in critical reading and a 480 in math. Visit the Promise website, www.promisescholarships.org, for the most current information and requirements. Counselors will assist students in applying for the PROMISE and the WV Higher Ed Grant in their Senior year and will provide information on filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) on the web at www.FAFSA.ED.GOV. CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION COURSES

Career Technical Education (CTE) programs are changing, evolving and innovating to better serve West Virginia's needs by preparing students to help

drive our success and vitality. Further, CTE is creating an educational environment that integrates core academics with real-world relevance. CTE is

transforming expectations and making a difference for students, for businesses and industry, for West Virginia and for the global community.

Career Technical Education is divided into sixteen career clusters.

The West Virginia Department of Education has worked with committee experts from numerous businesses and industries throughout West Virginia to design the Simulated Workplace environment for Career Technical Education programs. This new educational initiative has been created to assist schools in implementing workplace environmental protocols that align with West Virginia workforce requirements, including random drug testing, professionalism, attendance and safety. Simulated Workplace has not only enhanced instructional delivery of career education, but has created a more engaged career and technical student. The simulated workplace environment permits students the opportunity to take ownership of their individual performance as it impacts the overall success of their education, while thriving in an authentic workplace culture. Simulated Workplace also encourages local business and industry experts to join onsite review teams to assist schools in meeting their workforce needs and expectations.
