After trialling several sign options, the report by the Transport Engineering Research New Zealand released in early November confirmed flashing 20kmh signs reduced traffic speed around school buses.

Twenty-three children have been killed in the last 23 years crossing the road to or from school buses. Potentially children are at risk every school day, as 2,500 school buses operate on 1700 routes throughout the country.

The report recommended 50 school buses in one area be fitted with the illuminated signs in conjunction with a publicity campaign as a first step in finalising a nationwide programme aimed at raising driver awareness of safety around school buses.

The brightly lit — 20kmh signs costing, $422 each, (plus installation costs) would be mounted on the front and rear of the bus to remind drivers of the legal speed limit when passing a school bus.

Rural Women of New Zealand have campaigned for some time to have warning signs attached to school buses.

At a recent WWNZ forum in Wellington, members supported the TERNZ recommendation and suggested the cost of the

Flashing bus signs potential life savers

by Annette Lambly-Robinson

New research recently released by the New Zealand Transport Agency has boosted support for flashing warning signs to be fitted to all school buses.

signs could come from the Road Safety Trust which has around $6 million in reserves for community-based road safety projects.

RWNZ president Liz Evans said, “We’d like to see these signs approved by NZTA so we can get them on all school buses. Rural children in particular are vulnerable when drivers fail to slow down.”

Lisa Collins whose son Grant was killed as he got off a school bus in Kaitaia in 2008 also supported the report.

“For one moment Grant forgot to think, and that moment cost him his life,” she said. She hoped by sharing her tragic loss with others she would raise awareness and help bring about change to prevent others from having to go through the same pain.

Only last month a Kaitaia pupil was struck by a school bus and seriously injured. While in September a logging truck crashed into a school bus in Ruatoki injuring 36 children.

Back country stories raises thousands for charity

by Annette Lambly-Robinson

A Cambridge author has already raised $25,000 for charities from the sale of one of a series of three books on classic New Zealand ‘back country' stories.

Katherine Tozer has spent three years compiling the series of books Tales from the Back Country, the first of which was completed in 2010, has already helped charities such as Hospice Waikato, the SPCA and the Canterbury Earthquake appeal.

With the second and third books now completed and printed last month Dr Tozer is looking to partner with additional charities that need an ‘innovative' fundraising tool.

Dr Tozer, a Waikato scientist makes no money out of the sale of the books other than a reimbursement on the printing costs with all of the profits — $15 from each $25 book sold — donated to the elected charities.

The author is passionate about the wide open spaces and mountain ranges of New Zealand. She and her doctor husband Peter spend much of their spare time exploring and photographing the nation's varied and beautiful back country.

Along the way she has met many interesting people and has enjoyed writing their stories.

Tales from the Back Country is a

complication of the intimate nature of working dogs, their owners and other stories told to the author by the men and women who carve out a living in these “remote, rugged and beautiful” areas.

“New Zealand has breath-taking beauty and a wealth of stories just waiting to be told,” said Dr Tozer. “It is so rewarding to do something you love and know is going to benefit others — not everyone has that opportunity.”

The books have happy and sad stories — one from John Perriam, the owner of the now deceased Shrek the sheep, who speaks of the challenges of being a high country author, another written by Chrissies Fernyhough is about

the death and subsequent burial of one of her favourite dogs — its moving and intimate, but also portrays the beauty of the remote Craigieburn Mountains. Another tale told by Antarctica helicopter pilot describes trying not to panic when he realises low on fuel the white icebreaker on which he is suppose to land has moved to an unknown location in a sea of white pack-ice — a task he describes as trying to find a polar bear in a snow storm.

Woven around the heart-warming stories are the beautiful colour images or our country.

Charities wanting information about the fundraising should contact Katherine and Peter at [email protected]

Books can be purchased through Hospice Waikato, Waikato SPCA and www.apieceofnz.co.nz for $25.

Septic Tank OwnersHow you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthySeptic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them.Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective.By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top effi ciency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation fi eld and leach lines will become clear of slimes and

blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring micro-organisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste

material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum effi ciency. As they progress through to your irrigation fi eld they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum effi ciency.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

The 2012 Ahuwhenua Trophy BNZ Maori Excellence in Farming competition was launched at

the Federation of Maori Authorities conference in Tauranga on Saturday, November 12, by the Agriculture Industry’s Training Organisation’s strategic relations manager Peter MacGregor.

The AgITO is one of four silver sponsors of the award.

The Ahuwhenua Trophy is the premier award for Maori in agriculture. It acknowledges and celebrates business excellence in the New Zealand pastoral sector and is open to Maori farming properties either owned individually, or managed by Maori Trusts and Incorporations in New Zealand.

Each year it alternates between beef and sheep farms and dairy farms. This is the fourth year since the competition was revived in 2003 that entrants will

compete for the Ahuwhenua Trophy for excellence in Maori dairy farming.

Peter MacGregor praised the competition’s role in encouraging Maori farmers to make the best, sustainable use of their resources to build strong agribusinesses which provide not only good returns to shareholders, but long term employment and other economic benefits.

“Entrants all receive robust, objective and honest feedback from the judges. This allows them to implement changes and improve their performance regardless of whether or not they are chosen as finalists,” he said.

The first Ahuwhenua competition was introduced in 1932 by Sir Apirana Ngata and, the then Governor General, Lord Bledisloe, to encourage skill and proficiency in Maori farming. Lord Bledisloe donated the original cup in 1932, two years after he donated the almost identical, Bledisloe Cup to encourage competition between New Zealand and Australia in rugby.

The inaugural 1933 competition was open only to farmers in the Waiariki land district, but the following year the competition was extended to include entrants from North and South Auckland, Gisborne, Wanganui and Wellington.

In 1936 the cup was won by Henry Dewes, a sheep farmer from Tikitiki but

Entry is now open for the 2012 Ahuwhenua Trophy — BNZ Maori Excellence in Farming Award.

a year later the trophy was destroyed in a fire at the Waiapu store where Henry Dewes had it displayed. It was replaced with a new cup in 1938, but six years later that trophy was lost during a rail trip from Rotorua to Wellington — turning up two years later in a Frankton store.

BE ALERTCalling all Maori dairy farmers

dairy farms with sheep farms became increasingly evident and in 1954 the competition was divided into two separate awards — dairying and sheep and beef — with Lord Bledisloe again donating the companion cup.

Interest during the 1980s began to wane with the last competition held in 1990 before it was again revived in 2003 and in 2005 it was decided to alternate the award categories.

Strong historical links between Mataatua rohe (Tauranga) and the Ahuwhenua competition were highlighted by the attendance of the winner of the 1933 competition, William Swinton, and the winner John Edwards, at a recent hui hosted by Te Arawa and Mataatua and aimed at encouraging entries.

Maori women have been prominent in the history of the competition. Tatai Hall

of Te Teko was the first female winner of the cup in 1940 and in 1952 it was won by Mrs R Beazley of Pokeno. Mihi Stevens of Rangiahau won the inaugural Dairy award in 1954 and won it again in 1960.

In recent years Kristen Nikora won the 2008 Dairy competition in partnership with her husband Dean and in 2009 Ingrid Collins chaired the Pakarae Whangara B5 partnership which won the Beef and Sheep competition.

The winner of the competition will be announced at a Gala Awards dinner to be held at the Sky City Auckland Convention Centre on June 8, 2012.

Entries close on Friday, January 27, 2012. Entry is free and entry forms are available from all offices of Te Puni Kokiri or www.ahuwhenuatrophy.maori.nz and www.maoritrustee.co.nz.

In an historic ‘first’, the current holder of the Ahuwhenua Trophy for Dairy Farming, Waipapa 9 Trust, also won the Ahuwhenua Sheep and Beef Trophy at the 2011 Ahuwhenua Trophy BNZ

It was the first time a Manawatu farmer had won the national dairy awards and Mr Halford was rightly

proud of his win.

The national win came at the end of his contract with the Argyles — and as it happened a few weeks later he was picking up his first 50-50 sharemilking position at John Seymour’s 91-hectare property at Opiki. The farm is well set out with good infrastructure which he says makes the job so much easier.

His herd — 265 friesians and crossbreds have started the season off well and although the huge rainfall last month has seen pasture growth slow — Mr Halford is pleased with having taken the sharemilking step. “Weather will always be a challenge to farmers.”

He, with the help of his partner Nikki, (who works off farm) has raised 66 replacements which will help out when he starts culling the newly comprised herd.

“I was ready for the step. I think sharemilking is a great sector to be in

and owning the cows is a big positive,” he said.

He’s got a bit of a soft spot for cows. “I definitely like cows, they all have their own personalities and character. You

need to like them really — you spend a lot of time with them.”

Farming is a chosen career — he wasn’t raised on a farm — but he left school at 16 to work on a dairy farm The rules have changed

Taranaki/Manawatu Farming Lifestyles December 2011 7at Pahiatua. He moved to another at Eketahuna before travelling overseas at age 20 on his big OE.

It was a number of years before he came home and took up farming again. Deciding tertiary education would improve his skills he completed a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in agriculture and has held several farm management positions since then.

Sharemilking is another step towards farm ownership which he sees as achievable within the next ten years. And while sharemilking has thrown in a few new challenges he says the fundamental principles of farming remain the same.

“Animal health and the environment are my biggest responsibilities,” he says. “Every dairy farmer should be aware of our obligations regarding animal health and welfare and the environment — not only for ourselves, but because of the impact it has on how we sell our products overseas.”

His production aims are high — 450 milk solids from each cow — 120ms above the average Manawatu farm of 330ms — and believes he will achieve it.

He’s in no hurry to increase herd

management, backed by good management systems.

The win was important to him in that it gave him confidence in the knowledge that what he was doing was on the right track.

“Upskilling is important, knowledge is the key to being successful or not.”

Mr Halford is co-ordinating the upcoming 2012 Dairy Trainees of the Year contest for the Manawatu, Rangitikei, Horowhenua regional competition, one of 12 regional competitions held nationwide by the NZDI awards.

He encourages people to enter the awards, whether they believe they can win or not. “Challenge yourself — why wouldn’t you want to better yourself and your business.

“All the judges are successful farmers in their own right, whose knowledge and experience will help you fast track your career.

“The awards are positive putting you out there and having your hard work recognised.”

Entries in the 2012 awards opened last month and will be accepted online until December 31.

The company also has a new tour to Victoria and Tasmania planned for late March and a Winter Escape to Queensland, Australia, in June.

Farm To Farm Tours was established nearly 25 years ago and has since organised global tours to and from New Zealand for hundreds of farmers.

“Some of our clients are on their seventh and eighth tour overseas, so we presume they must be very happy with what we are putting in place,” said Managing Director, Ross Macmillan. “Although we get a high percentage of repeat travellers each year,

we also like to see a steady stream of new faces join our groups.”

Farm To Farm started out as an offshoot of Macmillan’s Farm Consultancy company in the late 1980s and has grown to the extent that the company now employs 4 full time staff. Farm to Farm is a foundation member of Agricultural Tour Operators International, a professional organisation which provides networking opportunities and professionalism for farming groups tour providers, worldwide.

“Farmers enjoy travelling with like-minded people and getting off the main roads to see what is actually happening rather than just wondering! Travelling in a group enables farmers to access top farm visits overseas, meet new friends and share a lot of fun and information together on the coach.”

With the payout high and interest low, it’s a really good time to fix the things that are causing some grief around the Dairy. Before you upgrade to new Milfos cup removers or a Milfos Variable Drive Vacuum System it would be sensible to evaluate things that could impact on your proposed upgrade.Sparkies generally do a great job, however, we regularly come across wiring of all sorts that has been installed incorrectly. For instance we see the right cable used on say, a milk pump controller, but still bundled with everything else so it creates interference with the controller and bingo, a slightly crazy controller. Unless you know what to look for it can be a painful process to find as it looks like a faulty controller. This is important for all sorts of systems from pulsation controllers to cup removers and the more sophisticated the system the more careful you have to be. We recommend keeping data cables as far away from power as possible. We have all heard about stray voltage, yes it does exist and can cause all sorts of issues, we have found a major source is the cable and terminations between Variable drives and Motors. There is a lot of documentation supplied with variable drives with regard to the cable to be used and metal glands for terminations etc, these are minimums and a good Sparky will follow manufacturer’s recommendations or better. If in doubt get it checked.Don’t forget the effluent or water pump, same deal, and move the electric fence unit to the implement shed, they can be an interference nasty in the dairy. For sensible advice on Upgrades, find your local Milfos dealer or Area Sales Manager at www.milfos.com.

Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen

Summer is most definitely here; Temperatures are climbing and target Bulk Milk temperatures are getting harder to maintain. The main reason in a conventional system is that the temperatures of the water used to cool the milk .We have heard of water up to 30 degrees and 22-23 degrees is not uncommon.

A vat wrap will help, however the fundamentals are that the chiller isn’t up to it or the vat won’t allow enough chilling to cope .

It is often asked what types of chilling systems do what, so I have some fundamentals of common systems, their capabilities and typical comparative pricing (all systems are custom so pricing is only indicative).Direct Expansion Capabilities. Average $17,000 Single vat chilling. Chilling to 7 degrees in 5 hrs

typically. Low grade heat recovery 45

degrees.(if available) Uses peak tariff electricity. Water Chiller with Direct Expansion. Average $46,000

In line secondary chilling putting milk into silo at between 10 and 12 degrees Split chilling system that can chill the vat using the same unit and chill a water storage tank. Low grade heat recovery 45 degrees.

Low to medium amperage draw. Some off peak tariff use.

Direct Online Glycol Chilling System. Average $58,000

In line secondary chilling milk into the silo at 7 to 9 degrees Use glycol to chill milk silos (multiple vat chilling)Large amperage drawNo off peak power use. Medium grade hot water heat recovery 60 degrees

Thermal Energy Storage System iCONVERTER $65,000

In line secondary SNAP chilling to 5 degrees into the Silo Uses glycol to chill multiple silosLow Amperage Draw Off Peak Power Use High grade hot water recovery 80 degrees High quality finish for system longevity

The bottom line is you get what you pay for, the cheapest has the highest running cost, so is much more expensive over the long term, while the dearest has much lower running costs, will be compliant and will save more than it cost over time. The choice is yours.

This article focuses on the cost benefits of minimising losses in the amount and nutritional value of silages during the ensiling process.

Previously it has been indicated pasture could cost about 20-30 c/kg DM to grow, and the cost of harvesting, rolling, covering, sealing and weighting the covers could add about another 5 c/kg DM. Loss of grass during transport and silage making should not significantly add to this cost, if done carefully.

A good inoculant plus enzyme product may cost about 0.3 c/kg fresh weight, which equates to about 1 c/kg DM for a crop ensiled at 30% DM.

DM losses during ensiling can typically be around 10-15%, as the sugars in the grass are used as a food source by the bacteria to produce the acids which pickle the crop to produce stable silage. Therefore, 200 tonnes of grass put into a pit may only end up as 170-180 tonnes of silage.

These losses equate to $5,000-$7,500 if silage costs 25 c/kg DM to make.

If an inoculant reduces losses by five percentage units, then this saves $2,500 for an outlay of only $2,000. Actual savings could be considerably higher, depending on ensiling conditions. A good inoculant reduces DM losses by speeding up the fermentation process, so fewer nutrients are used to keep the bacteria alive which produce the acids necessary to pickle the grass.

The better the inoculant product the faster the fermentation processes, and the less silage lost. The best inoculants contain a number of bacterial strains,

Inoculate or Not — Cost Bene ts?Dr Julian Waters BSC (Hons), MSc, PhD, Cbiol, MSB, Rnutr, CPAg, MNZIPIM

each of which work best at different pH's, thus speeding up ensiling. It is rather like a 4 x 100 metre swimming team, where each member of the team swims their part of the race using their preferred stroke, being freestyle, butterfly, back or breast stroke.

The bacterial strains on pasture are hetero-fermentative, which means they produce a range of acids such as acetic (vinegar), butyric (smells like vomit) and lactic. Lactic is the strongest of these acids and produces the most palatable silage to livestock. A good inoculant contains homo-fermentative bacteria that only produce lactic acid, which enables the crop to be ensiled more efficiently and rapidly.

Plant sugars provide the energy for lactic acid producing bacteria, so any shortage of sugars will slow down the rate of fermentation.

Therefore, good inoculant products also contain a number of enzymes that are largely focussed on breaking down indigestible fibre to produce sugars for the lactic acid producing bacteria. This helps speed up fermentation, particularly with challenging ensiling conditions.

Using an enzyme only product will not result in an optimal fermentation, as the resident bacteria in pastures are hetero-fermentative, so produce the less desirable and weaker acids.

However, there is an additional benefit from using a good inoculant, which is that the resulting silage is utilised more efficiently than un-inoculated silage, due to less nutrient degradation, most notably protein.

During ensiling grass proteins are

Dairying

broken down into non-protein nitrogen, which rumen microbes can utilise, but they utilise proteins more efficiently. The faster the fermentation process the less protein is degraded to

non-protein nitrogen.

It is difficult to put a specific value on the improvement in feed value of inoculated silages, which have been demonstrated in carefully controlled trials, as conditions vary between farms.

A 5% improvement in energy utilisation of 10.5 MJ ME/kg DM pasture crop would equate to an improvement of about 0.5 MJ ME/kg DM, which would equate to 500 MJ ME / tonne of silage, or nearly 50 kg DM extra silage. Unfortunately, the laboratory methods for predicting ME values of silages are not sensitive enough to detect these changes.

Combining the more conservative calculation of the benefits of silage saved and improved utilisation is roughly equivalent to having an additional 15

tonnes DM from 200 t DM ensiled, a saving of around $3,750 for an inoculant outlay of about $2,000. This is still only part of the benefit, as there will be an additional benefit of the value of the extra production arising from feeding the silage.

If 14 tonnes of extra silage, at 10.5 MJ ME/kg DM, is actually eaten by cows in milk (assuming about 7% wastage during feeding out), and that 80 MJ are required to produce 1kg milk solids, then the extra milk produced would be worth nearly $12,000 at $6.50 /kg MS payout.

Potential return on investment (ROI) in this example would be about 3:1.

Although one may argue about the magnitude of any savings or benefits used in this example, the key take home message is:

Very small improvements in silage saved and feed quality are required to achieve a respectable ROI, so there is little risk of losing money when using a good inoculant, assuming silages are well made and utilised.

Gourmet garlic is perfect for

Garlic may not ward off vampires as it is legendarily claimed, but there is no doubt of its popularity as a flavour addition to New Zealand cuisine.

Nestled between Mount Egmont, the Tasman Sea and the city of New Plymouth is a commercial garlic growing farm — known oddly enough as Lovelavender (there

is a reason).

Seven years ago Rex Hendry's desire to get back in touch with the environment, become fitter and to better balance his life saw him stand down from his position as the local area manager for the Department of Conservation.

At the time, at 50 years of age Rex, who had held many managerial positions in his 35-year employment career, including a stint as operations manager at Scott base in Antarctica, wanted to become more physically in touch with the land.

An academic, with a strong background in planning he found “as time had gone on, the further and further my jobs lead me away from the 'real' environment,” he said.

“In previous lives I had grown flowers for the fresh and dried markets and lettuce and artichokes all of which required a quick turn around to be sold at their best, so this time around I wanted to grow something that had longevity and was easier to manage,” he said.

Research (and the love of garlic) revealed no-one was

growing garlic on a commercial basis in the region.

“What was available to buy locally was not always the best and people were fed up with the inferior quality,” said Rex.

Rex had owned a 2.5-acre lifestyle block property for around five or six years and he saw garlic as a good commercial possibility for the small acreage.

Since then one acre of the property has been developed for horticulture. He grows the garlic in raised beds with lavender planted between the rows (hence the name) for windbreak and as an additional marketable crop.

He plants around 18,000 garlic cloves each year, planting only one third of the beds at a time, thereby allowing the soil a three-year rotational cycle.

Little mechanisation is used — a hand held motorised rotary hoe is used for tilling — planting, weeding and harvesting is all done by hand, with the help of Rex's partner Sally.

It’s hard physical work and took a bit of getting used too. Rex laughs at how back in those early days after only half a day working in the field he would literally crawl inside tired to the bone.

While not organically certified the garlic is grown spray free. Fallow beds

Rex hand harvests some of the new season’s garlic

are planted with a green crop — mustard or oats which is hoed back into the beds.

“I've tried to keep mechanisation as simple as possible rather than over capitalising on equipment and also in keeping with my desire for the physical contact with the land.”

The site has its climatic challenges — it is two to three degrees colder than New Plymouth, receives its fair share of wind, particularly the westerly winds and gets around 1.2 metres of annual rainfall.

Because of this Rex says he plants slightly earlier than elsewhere, typically around Queen's Birthday weekend, and harvests in the first week of January to allow a few extra weeks of growth.

He mainly grows the silver skin printanor variety of garlic which is a soft neck hybrid developed for New Zealand conditions. For the last couple of years he has also been growing elephant or 'ophio' garlic — a much larger and mild garlic which has its own market appeal and is proving popular.

He is now marketing around 1000 kilograms of garlic per annum from the two tonne wet weight harvested. The garlic is cured for three weeks before it is cleaned up, graded and either sold in loose bulbs or hand braided into bundles. Rejects are used for making insecticide sprays and he also retains his own seed stock.

Around 50 percent of the garlic is sold at farmers’ markets with the rest being sold online. It sells out quickly, usually by April, so customers need to be quick.

No time to rest however — remember the lavender — no sooner has the garlic been harvested and sold than it’s time to harvest the lavender.

The 1400 ‘Grosso’ and ‘Super’ plants are also hand harvested, tied up, and bundled into wool bales and driven to Stratford where they are distilled.

Rex then freeze dries the oil before using it in a number of products including soap, moisturisers, bubble bath, balm, mists and oils.

Shampoo and conditioner bases are made off site with Rex adding the lavender mixes according to the 'scientific' instructions.

You'd think all this would be enough for one man, but Rex its seems doesn't like idle time. In a wee warm nook Sally and Rex have planted a number of herb plants suitable for herbal teas.

“Sally and I drink a lot of herbal tea so we thought we would try growing some. We had been growing camellia sinensis (normal tea) for a couple of years, but it was hammered by the wind, so this spot begged development. Now we are looking to specialise in mints, specifically 'Chocolate Mint' — which smells like chocolate, but tastes minty.

It's early days, but they now have 16 or so varieties or mixes of teas available depending on the season.

William Harold Marsh, farmer, father, early Albertlander and adventurous photographer captured a time of enchantment, when life was lived at a slower pace and governed by a different set of values, priorities and ambitions.

This landmark commemorative book by Paul Campbell tells the story of the Albertlanders’ arrival and settling of the Kaipara area, and features many of Harold Marsh’s photographs that have been painstakingly restored.

Honda motorcycles have been strong contenders year in and year out in the World Superbike and AMA Superbike competitions, devoting millions of dollars and countless hours to research and development to improve their stable of high-performance machines.

With a racing pedigree stretching back to the golden era of the sport, Honda have always been quick to bring racing advances to the motorcycling public, tuning and fettling their street bikes with the know-how earned in oil and sweat on the world’s top tracks.

This year has proved no exception, with bold new design cues and blistering power the order of the day across Honda’s flagship CBR range — an acronym renowned among riders for power and precision handling. From the legendary CBR 750 of yesteryear which put the best of British to shame, through to the high-tech Fireblade, the CBR badge is the motorcycling equivalent of Lamborghini’s raging bull — a mark of prestige which promises limitless thrills.

Honda CBR seriesby our motoring correspondent World superbike legend Aaron Slight

sums up this year’s CBR 1000RR best — ‘Not only does it look the trick, the Fireblade is so nimble, light and powerful it gets you begging for a racetrack...’

And he’s not alone in piling accolades on this muscular-looking, slick superbike. From its cast-aluminium core to its compact, centralised engine with larger bore and stroke, all the way down to a set

of 4-piston calliper brakes, this is a machine which invites the rider to push the boundaries, while still providing thrills for every level of experience. Seasoned motorcyclists will be rewarded with scalpel-sharp handling which enables a smooth line through the bends, and a torquey whack of power from the big 999cc mill on the straights.

For those who want a head-turner with slightly less muscle but oozing aggressive style, Honda also offer a re-upped CBR 600RR — cut from the same cloth as its MotoGP inspiration and with the most powerful 600cc engine in its class. Once again, a new design direction has gifted the CBR 600 with stunning looks to match its turn of speed.

Fishing HuntingThe safe rescue last month of an

inexperienced hunter in a remote area of the Kaimanawa Ranges is a reminder to plan and prepare well before venturing into remote country.

Mountain Safety Council Hunter training programme manager, Mike Spray,

Survival relies on simple safety checkssaid the outcome could have been quite different if the weather had not been so favourable.

He said the incident highlights the importance of thorough planning and preparation and having a back-up plan for when things go wrong.

“Regardless of the time of year, before going into New Zealand’s mountain areas, hunters (or trampers) need to have the skills and experience to deal with unexpected situations.”

“Taking appropriate clothing and equipment and being able to cope with extreme weather conditions are all necessities for those who go into these environments.” Even in November the weather can deteriorate rapidly and cold

conditions can be encountered with little warning,” says Mr Spray.

“Survival may then rely on your ability to wait it out until conditions improve and being able to raise the alarm quickly.”

The Mountain Safety Council recommends anyone venturing into bush and mountain areas to check on the weather conditions and plan their trip accordingly.

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council was formed in 1965 in response to the increasing number of mountain, bush and firearms fatalities. Today, MSC is a national organisation responsible for safety in land based outdoor activities.

It facilitates the setting of standards, offers training, distributes resources, leads public awareness campaigns and fosters positive support in the community so that more people can discover and enjoy

About the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (Msc)New Zealand's outdoors safely.

MSC’s volunteer firearms instructors are approved by NZ Police to deliver firearm safety training and administer the Firearm Safety Test to new firearms licence applicants.

MSC is also proactive in delivering key firearms safety messaging campaigns throughout New Zealand and produces publications including the ‘Going Hunting’ pamphlet.

This month, the oldest boat shop in Taranaki, Egmont Marine Services Ltd, has marked 15 years in business and owner, Grant Lister, is pleased with what has been achieved. The well-known business is based on Glover Road, one of the busiest locations in Hawera.

“It was always my dream to give it a crack and make it succeed,” Grant says of the rm’s beginnings in 1996.

When Grant started out, he was a sole operator and Shirley ran the of ce but these days he employs several staff. His client base is well beyond Hawera and stretches as far north as Hamilton and Palmerston to the south.

Grant is the rst to admit however, that there has been a few challenges along the way, such as keeping abreast of the huge advances in technology.

“Gone are the days of just screwdrivers and spanners — now laptops and software are crucial and boat engines are so re ned and fuel-ef cient.”

As an Evinrude supplier Grant travels to Australia bi-annually for extra training and a major highlight for Grant last year was an invitation to inspect the Evinrude factory in Milwaukee, USA.

He saw everything from the manufacture of product updates, diagrams of new products and how to carry out nautical fault- nding to an optimal level and pass the examinations.

“It was absolutely incredible — a totally amazing experience. It had always been a dream of mine to visit and I even got a glimpse into the future of this industry.

This year Egmont Marine was granted a prestigious Smartway franchise, which is “something new for us”.

Grant Lister offers friendly, knowledgeable advice and is the person to see for all boating and water sport needs, at Egmont Marine Services Ltd. Congratulations, Grant on 15 years of quality products and expertise.

Government considers raw milk gate salesThis Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry

discussion paper is seeking public views on whether to continue the current practise of farm gate sales of raw drinking milk.

Currently, the law allows farmers to sell a daily maximum of five litres of raw milk from their farm for people to drink and give to their family.

Three options are proposed:

• To maintain the current legal position.

• To make some amendments to conditions of

sale, and exempt farmers from an RMP for farm gate sales, but still require them to meet some animal health and hygiene requirements and keep records of sales (this is MAF’s preferred option).

• To make some amendments to conditions of sale and retain the requirement for a risk management programme — a written programme designed to manage the hazards, the wholesomeness and the labelling of animal material and products. (There are no plans for commercial-scale sales of raw milk.

He’s inquisitive, enjoys a bit of a yarn, calls a spade a spade and thoroughly enjoys his vocation. Bruce Worsnop has spent decades combining his skill and knowledge with science to select sheep with worm tolerance so that ‘dagginess’ is fast becoming history.

Bruce, along with son Patrick and partner Wendy, operate a ram stud and commercial ock of 2,000 pure bred Lincoln ewes and also breed Belgian Blue cattle. Their Makaroro Road property in the lee of the Ruahine Ranges covers some 1,900 acres of rolling and at pasture.

“We’ve been selecting our Lincoln Ram stud sires and the females we put into the stud ock for their tolerance to worms for the last 33 years and have found this to be a very heritable trait,” said Bruce.

Bruce’s primary focus is wool production and, as a breeder, the last three decades have been successful because of the demand for lustrous

wool, mohair blends and the hand knotted rug market.

Lincoln sheep, the heaviest wool-producing breed, were the rst English long wool breed to become established in New Zealand but more recently they have been used as a rst crossing sire to lift wool production in a ock. One example is the Lincoln Perendale cross, which produces 23 percent more wool than a pure Perendale.

With his nger on the pulse when it comes to the wool industry, Bruce is hopeful the Campaign for Wool, launched by Prince Charles earlier this year, will promote the bene ts of wool and see an increase in demand. The campaign, which Bruce describes as ‘a breath of fresh air’ is a great opportunity for wool growers to consolidate, unite and support the project.

As for the future Bruce is still experimenting but is rather tight lipped about his work.

The grand daddy of the wool producers

Northland Field Days 2012, from March 3, is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever. Now in its 28th year, planning for the annual event starts before the last is even finished.

The event is believed to be the second largest agricultural event in New Zealand, with 25,000 visitors and over 550 exhibitors showcasing their products.

The 2012 event also has some new, exciting additions including two major gate prizes — both lifestyle and

rural and visitors can enter each day they attend.

Sites for 2012 have been filling fast but due to development of the grounds to cater for growth, some sites are still available. Sales and Marketing Coordinator, Gwenda Reid says any queries are welcome.

President, Lew Duggan, adds “This year new businesses are booking sites as they believe the future is looking more positive for the agricultural sector.”

NEW YEAR’S EVE SPECIAL – THE MARTY STUART MUSIC-A-THONSaturday December 31 from 8.30PM – 5AM New Year’s Day

Marty Stuart is one of the most eclectic performers, seamlessly transitioning between honky-tonk, rockabilly, traditional country and bluegrass. He is one of country music’s most historically-minded ‘new’ traditionalists.

Marty Stuart is an accomplished artist, performer, producer, writer and photographer. His career began at the tender age of 12 when he began playing mandolin with the Sullivan Family. He then moved to Nashville to join Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass and eventually landed the job he had always wanted - performing with the Johnny Cash band. After more than six years with Johnny Cash, Stuart pulled together his own band, launched his own label and the rest is history.

The Marty Stuart Music-A-Thon, Saturday December 31 from 8.30pm only on Country99TV is a must-see for country music fans.
