I've always wanted to live in a different culture and complete school differently, be it high school or university. Overseas Student Exchange Mackenzie Meadow is currently studying at a high school in Switzerland as part of a student exchange through Rotary. In emailing Mackenzie about her subject selections for next year she was kind enough to also give us a bit of an insight into what the year has been like for her and how it was that she came to be on this exchange. There are a number of organisations that offer exchange opportunities at a secondary school level and all SA Universities encourage students to look at adding an international experience to their tertiary study and are very adept at organising this for students (generally once they have completed their first year of study). Read on to find out more about Mackenzie's exciting year away.................

What made you decide to do an overseas exchange? I've always wanted to live in a different culture and complete school differently, be it high school or university. I've also always loved travelling and going overseas which has been my dream since I was a kid. Another reason is to be able to speak a foreign language which has always been a goal of mine. Now after 7 months I can already speak German all of the time with my host families and friends at school.

What was involved in the application process? When I applied with Rotary Youth Exchange, I had to have an initial interview with my parents and someone from my home Rotary club. Then a few months later people who applied for the Exchange in my district all met up in Adelaide for the main interviews. These interviews were going to officially decide if we got to go. We were able to meet a previous exchange student who told us what was going to happen. We had to give reasons as to why we wanted to go and they had to be good reasons. We then had the long process of filling in many, many forms. Then we had a chance to meet "inbounds" that came to South Australia in August. Plus we were also able to meet older exchange students and finalize everything. From there it was just waiting and organizing everything to leave. It was a long year of organizing as interviews begin in March.

What are the highlights of your experience? The highlights of my experience have been learning the language, being able to see things unimaginable for a 16 year old and making a whole new group of friends in a foreign country. With Rotary in Europe you also have the chance to do a European tour, and that was by far the best part of my year so far. I was able to go to 11 different countries.

2 | P a g e

What have you found difficult? The language is most likely the only thing I really found difficult. During the first few months when you barely know the language it's quite hard, because for the most time you would be just sitting there quiet and shy. But as soon as you start understanding what people are saying around you that's when it gets better.

Has the experience changed your future aspirations and possible career directions? The exchange has definitely made me a lot better. I am much more mature and independent. I feel as if I could do anything, my career option has always been the same and now coming overseas, I find that I can definitely pursue this career as I've managed to pursue an exchange I feel as if I can do anything which will help me with my future. I believe if I hadn't been able to do this exchange, then I wouldn't have had so much confidence as I do now.

Anything else that you might like to add I believe if anyone wishes to travel, learn a new language, experience a new life and meet new people they should take the opportunity and go for it. Rotary is such a good group for an exchange but there are also many other options out there. I would recommend it for anyone and everyone! It's truly an amazing and once in a lifetime opportunity. You also are able to meet people from all over the world. And who gets to do that?

Legacy Collection Legacy is a voluntary organisation providing services to around 80,000 families of veterans who have died or suffer with ongoing health issues. Today Legacy’s caring and

compassionate service assists over 80,000 widows and 1,800 children and dependants with a disability.

Ten of our generous Year 10 Leaders, Kasey Swanson, Sarah Norton, Harry Ruth, Caitlin Gaffney, Ashleigh Leydon, Will Shanks, Elissa Francis, Maggie McKay, Josh Furler and Liam Wisdom, gave up an hour of their time on Thursday 1st September to collect for Legacy at the local IGA. It was a great success and Legacy were very appreciative of their efforts.

Uni Visits On Tuesday 13th September a small group of our Year 10 and 11 students were lucky enough to visit the Yunggorendi Student Engagement Centre at Flinders University. Here we heard from our host Roland, (an associate lecturer in the unit) and a current post graduate student, Jacinta who took us on a tour of the Uni. The Centre is a really welcoming space that provides lots of support and encouragement to students on their tertiary study journey. Flinders has recently undertaken a large building project and their new student centred facilities were obviously very popular with their current students. Our photo is taken at an informal space from the rooftop of the new student hub which overlooks the city, hills and coastal skyline. We then drove into UniSA City West campus where we were met by Nicole Holmes (future student advisor) and old scholar Dylan Hunter. Dylan has recently joined the Wirringka Student Services team at UniSA and shared his story with the students. Dylan recalled a visit to the university as a year 10 student, when as a result of the visit, he decided that he wanted to go to uni and over his final years of schooling decided that Human Movement and Health were the areas that he wanted to study. After graduation amongst other roles, Dylan worked with the Royal Flying Doctor Service as part of the community health team working in remote outback communities. Our group photo was taken at the UniSA City West campus at the end of our tour which took in the building of the new facilities in Hindley Street as well as the extensive student spaces that were also very popular with current students. The overriding message from our visit is that University is a very real and possible option for our students and it comes with a massive amount of understanding, support and solidarity from both Yunggorendi at Flinders and Wirringka at UniSA. Both campuses had a very friendly and welcoming feel which included lots of lollipops and other freebies, a chance to ask questions, see the different teaching and learning areas and even shoot hoops with some UniSA students.

Flinders University has recently installed art work which features in different locations on campus. Conceived as sentinels to watch over and protect the campus, the nine steel-fabricated feathers comprising yara honour the Kaurna Ancestor Spirit Tjilbruke - the glossy ibis - and pay tribute to the traditional owners of the land on which Flinders University was founded. The plume-like forms located across the plaza are linked by strings of poetic text gifted by Kaurna Elder Uncle Lewis Yerloburka O'Brien.

Purlirna kardlarna ngadluku miyurnaku yaintya tikkiarna.

Wardlipari is the homeriver in the Milky Way.

The stars are the fires of people living there.

Yurarlu yurakauwi trruku-ana padninthi Wardlipari.

Yurakauwi the rainbow serpent goes into the dark spots in the Milky Way.

Ngaiyirda karralika kawingka tikainga yara kumarninthi.

When the outer world and the sky connect with the water the two become one.

Reaching upward and evoking the meeting of earth and sky expressed in the text, the feathers also recognise the legacy of the University's namesake Matthew Flinders, as seen in the maps of the South Australian coastline chartered by the navigator and applied in the treatment of the work. These maps, made aboard The Investigator(1801 - 1803), are overlaid onto the feathers with Kaurna words as a gesture to the layering of history and cultural memory at this site. When viewed as quills, the feathers are also emblems of scholarship and knowledge, reflecting the University's role in teaching, learning and research.

Game Development Boot Camp Flinders@Tonsley

In the first week of the July school holidays four of our Year 11 students; Tyler Veldhoen, Alex Cruz, Erin Hargreaves and Lachlan Frances attended a 3 day Game Development Boot Camp held at Flinders University Tonsley campus. The four students were able to learn core game development skills including game design, character development and human-computer interaction through the development of their own educational game, which they worked on in pairs. Helping them out were developers and researchers from the field who also judged all of the entries on the final day. Tyler and Alex developed a game requiring participants to find a password to enter a room and Erin and Lachlan worked on a platform in 3rd person. Experiences like these can really help students to form a better idea of where they may like to go into the future. All four students aspire to be involved in the IT industry with Tyler hoping to be a software engineer, Alex something in art and animation, Erin a game developer and Lachlan something in IT. This Boot Camp also gave them the opportunity to hear what degrees Flinders offer in simulation and serious games, computer science, IT and digital media and where these skills can take you. All found the experience fun and worthwhile.

SA Training Awards VET student of the year

Our heartiest congratulations to recent old scholar Steve Dawson, who was announced as the VET student of the year at the recent SA Training Awards 2016. Steve was presented the award on Friday 9th September at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Steve is currently studying a Bachelor of Business Sport Management externally through Deakin Uni combined with work. In his acceptance speech Steve acknowledged the unconditional support and encouragement he was given through the SHC VET office (Tony Finamore and Anne Marie O'Grady) who amongst other things helped him to access relevant sport, recreation and fitness courses as a part of his final years of schooling. Steve is a very humble winner who was also very thankful for the wider support given to him by SHC. In the future Steve hopes one day to work in the high end of sport management with a Tier 1 sporting organisation and alongside start up his own personal training business.
