A new experience,a change from the norm, looking out for myself, and living on my own;for me this is college… The transitioning into college seems to be immensely overwhelming and even a bit scary. This shift had even opened a can of worms and created challenges both good and bad be-hind the corners. So what makes my college life different from school life?At first instance college and school life are like salt and sugar. They seems to look alike, but taste different or in other words school life is like a package tour but college life is like an individual journey. This simplifies it. Now all of a suden ,why does it occur to me that the days when I prayed for fever just so that I could escape from attending the classes seems to be ages ago.Sure there were times when I bombed tests and thought it would be great if school got abducted by aliens ,but I had never actually thought of leaving my good old school .But when time came I had to leave it behind. While in school, you are taken into the ac-count of still being a kid.Ofcourse they are strict

with the attendence policy,if you are caught out of the class without a note from a teacher, or a doctors excuse or any other valid reason,it is to the office you go with a nice refferal in your hand. The case is different if you are in college ,you wont be sent to the DEAN’s office for skipping, you ‘ll simply get a warning when you are on the brink of attendence shortage and then a little slip which implies that you shouldn’nt bother coming back when you hit the limit of absences!!! And the next big change is, what used to be a class room norm of learning the key points and reciting exactly the same will be suddenly replaced by self discovered means and ways. And cutting class and taking make up tests is no longer a viable option, becoz the faculty might have multiple number of heartattacks in store for the students by coming up with spot evaluation out of thin air. And the next most irksome thing that you’ll encouter is the long –long, never end-ing queues… as in canteen ,in C.O.E cell and in every possible place. N.B:you can even try jumping lines ,but seriously it spoils your public

image!!! And finally you are out in this world on your own ,you set up your own curfews and deadlines. You are independent to choose what you want to do.But always remember freedom comes with responsibiities. You’ll probably be surprised at how quick-ly you assimilate to your surroundings and adopt the new routines to replace the old ones you left behind. You’ll get accoustomed to the new-ways of your friends .Many a times it is said that college years are the best years of your life… When in college try to discover who you are and what you are made up of becoz you’ll probably never again be surrounded by these many peers on a full time basis…. So guys,MAKE THE MOST OF IT!!!

Transitioning into NIFT - the diary of a college girl

Nift Bangalore, one of the premier fash-ion colleges in India, has been training and hon-ing the skills of young designers who go on to carve a niche for themselves. But at the same time, it has not been left untouched by the nor-mal college and student council politics (now now, please don’t get judgmental). Oh yes, for all those who didn’t know, it’s an eye opener, but Nift nurtures the leadership skills of a selected few too. But the political season starts and ends in two weeks at the maximum. And then the chosen few carry out the tasks and events that is becoming of the position they hold.Elections to various posts of student’s council and the four clubs at Nift Bangalore were quite some affair this year. Campaigns of all forms and magnitudes imaginable in a constituency the size of 800-odd students were raging on- through posters, banners, flyers etc stuck all over the campus. And of course you had the good old- parties, food and drinks, promises, lobbying, efforts to drown the morale of oppos-ing candidate etc to win votes over. There were rumours doing rounds about full on “anti-cam-paigning” in the girl’s hostel (E and F blocks of

campus building). The nomination and introduction had scenes of their own. Students of same batch and de-partment were standing up against each other. There were as many as 10 nominations for the cultural vice president while just one for the president of student council. During the intro-duction of candidates, Vivek Raj of AD-5, up for the position of student council VP, was caught in an ugly scene where he found himself the target of empty plastic bottles.Students casted their votes on 19th August. The management had actually created make-shift polling booths and the voting was “com-putertonic”- through a program designed by PG students under the guidance of Mr. Arivoli. Mrs Rashmi Munshi was actively involved in the whole process and kept shooing candidates away from booths to avoid any glitch in the pro-cess of polling. Every student present on 19th August cast their votes, after gaining access to the polling booth by showing their id cards and signing on registers. Results were declared on 22nd August and the winners took oath to their office in an ceremony organized in the audito-

rium on 25th August , 2010 in the presence of faculty and students, thus bringing down the curtains of politics in the very commencement of academic year.

Politics at Fashion College?

Art,color, design, events have been synonymous to NIFT ,a place for the students to discover their talents, chill and live every day.It has been a storehouse of all such events and celebrations.Teachers day at NIFT was one such event. The one person who has always been a catalyst to-wards being human is a teacher. At a college like ours, students are like amateur buds who are nurtured well by the teachers to the bloom.Edu-cation doesn’t sound difficult, ironically it is,but teachers are those who make the most difficult of things the easiest. A well planned teachers day event was managed by the students with due respect to all the teachers.A thanks is always necessary,a smile is necessary,a hug and much more than respect is necessary for the ones that made us .Breaking through the stereotypical identity of grouchy, irritable and everaging teachers, the fac-ulty flooded the audi in neatly ironed trousrs and well pleated sarees .Cards, specially made by t he students for the teachers –beautiful, innovative and glistening with respect and affection for the teachers at our college.Gifts were distributed to the teachers who had smiles and joy adorning

their faces.Yes,it was the day that somebody was acknowledging their umpteen efforts to-wards a better life for so many students. This was then followed by a contempo-rary dance solo by Vanshika Saigal (FP-C).Each move and every single beat left the teachers mesmerized.Ashmika Beohar (FP-B) too, then accompanied Vanshika for a duet on which thwy danced to a traditional folk track. This created a very soft and pleasant atmosphere throughout the auditorium.Adding more fun to the event was a dance performance by Anjali Mehta (FP-D),Jayati Jain (FP-E),Pallavi Negi (FP-C),Pratibha Dwivedi (FP-A),Pratiksha Chauhan (FP-B),Razeena (FP-D) on a medley of songs each from a different period mixed with fun,pep and loads of groove . As it is said, that the fun part is always spared till the end,the best part of the event was a quiz competition based on the college, the most popular and best parts of being associ-ated with the institute.Four teams containing two of the faculty members each got onto the stage answering those oh-so-easy and popular questions which just about kept the audiences

involved all the time.Director Ma’m And Jonalee Ma’m became the winners for this quiz competi-tion.The events were all put together by Nimmi Uday (FC-3),Vivek Raj (AD-5),Rahul S (FC-5) ,Shweta RC (AD-5). There would have been no limits to events happening in ode to the teachers at our college had it been then. But a little of these efforts that the students put in for the teachers were ..no – are important as they are the ones who made us , US.They are the ones ,we happily cursed ,the ones we hated, the ones we even though loved – all instrumental to us,our being. This was for the ones that we happily cursed, harassed, rebelled against, and somewhere down – somewhere , absorbed some knowledge, some element that made us – US .

For you teachers...

A touch of smile, plenty of free advices, run-ning errands are the few things that strike us as soon as we think about our seniors. The thought of life after college itself generates a question mark in our mind. “Will we get the right job?” “Will our work be good enough?” The only people who can reassure us and fulfill our queries are our pass out seniors. The alumni- the link between the present and the future….

It was the perfect amalgamation in the air to see the sign of freedom of country and my idea of freedom when the flag was hoisted on 15th August 2010 in the grounds of NIFT, Bangalore. The event was graced by honorable presence of the branch head of Peter England. The dress code for the students , uniform , distribution of sweets reminded me of my school days where Independence Day celebration used to be a much awaited event. The program had an enthusiastic start with the national anthem and after that a glowing speech by Srishti(FP-I) then when Harshit(FP-I) started his round of questioning about the problems in young hearts about realizations of the fading pride and respect for their nation, I wondered doesn’t freedom come at a cost? A cost which was paid by people who gave up their lives. Shouldn’t we show our respect to them by trying to preserve the freedom? There shouldn’t be a single day where we should feel obliged to be grateful to the coun-try, every moment can be a moment of honour.Few of our friends who were present during the ceremony chose yet another day to celebrate

spirits of the country but many others chose to keep it in heart and not to take an effort to be a part of flag hoisting. It was good to see the alumni who come all the way to celebrate this occasion with us every year. As every celebration is incomplete without dance and music, Anjali Mehta(FP-I) and charvee(FP-I) performed contemporary and classical dance, receiving a huge ap-plause. Pranchal(FP-I) sang vandemataram and made everybody sway to the melody is her voice. Faculty wholeheartedly appreciated each of our friends contribution. There was a band performance by Akshay(FP-I), Lohit(FP-I) and vivek(FP-I).When Shivangi stepped up on the podium and started her warm speech in our mother tongue, it all brought us a step closer to our national language. There was a sense of pride, triumph and elation with a tinge of hope. The colors and beauty around complemented the ambience of the occasion so well. The spirits of the event soared and touched the sky when all gave a loud salute of vandemata-ram.Every niftian present there will preserve the

memories of 15th August 2010 in their hearts forever and imprints of patriotism in their minds.

Paper Mache is one art we all are mighty familiar with. Remember the paper airplanes and other games in childhood days. Here in Nift , Paper Mache is an important part of material science module for Ist year(FP) students. He taught and demonstrated the technique of fine Paper Mache, Origami and Kirigamie. The workshop started with the introduction of paper to the stu-dents .He discussed characteristics, nature and scope of the paper with the students. It was followed by a practical session where students were provided with papers to present on spot their ideas based on talk from previ-ous sessions. Paper Mache Workshop We have a beauty queen in our midst!

Being a pioneer in the field of producing geni-uses in the field of fashion for years now, Nift Bangalore invites the top notch professionals for guest talks and lectures. Latest to grace the list of the elites is the Indian Fashion Guru Prasad Bidappa himself. For most of the students, it was like a dream come true. And why not, it is not everyday that a top fashion expert decided to come and talk about his experiences and field all questions one can ask too. For all those who do not know, Prasad Bidappa’s signatures can be found in many walks of fashion, business and art. He is a choreographer, stylist, fashion journalist, Entrepreneur, socialite but most of all, if you can trust one person to predict the next model to rock the fashion world and catwalks, it has to be Prasad Bidappa- the man with an uncanny knack of choosing the next top mod-el. He is much sought after in Fashion Industry and has handled the PR and trained the likes of Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma, Lara Dutta and Dino Morea to name a few.Going by his stature in the fashion world, it was a revelation to see him before our eyes in flesh and blood. He comes around as a very down

to earth person, very willing to share his vast wealth of knowledge and experience with all those who took interest. He was welcomed with a bouquet and was es-corted to auditorium by the faculty. He settled on a chair and patiently waited for the trickling stu-dents to settle down and the systems (light and sound) to be fine tuned. Once everything was in place, he began his talk, discussing about fash-ion, his experiences, shows in association with Rohit Bal and other designers, ad shoots with Prabuddha Dasgupta, technicalities of a fashion show, importance of styling in a show/ad shoot etc. He also explained how creativity and out of box thinking can set a huge trend and turn the look and appeal of a show or shoot on its head, for the better.Towards the end of talk, he entertained ques-tions with enthusiasm. He was presented with a small memento as a token of thanks. Before he left, he expressed his keen wish to meet some of the students present in a few years time, ac-complished and established in their own right. A Guru in the right sense of the word, Prasad Bidappa really is!!

NIFT ,this year, saw some packed action in the month of August at the beginning of the academic year. Two weeks of full on political drama followed by a sports week which had the events which should have been organized across the semester, condensed into one eventful week. The sports week organized by Sports club was held from 23rd aug to 30th Aug 2010. It was an average success. The main events included badminton, volleyball, amphi cricket and more .However the events which drew the most crowd were amphi cricket and volleyball. One could see a ;ot otf cheering ,hooting and whistling and clapping which made the scene come alive. It was heartening to see people participating in good numbers but it could definitely have been better. The winners and runner ups for each event were appropriately rewarded with individual prize money. The sports week was a nice hange from the usual evenings .But it

would be nicer to have the sports event well spread out the year,to provide participants time to prepare and relax and to bring a change in the usual routine. Sonam Bhagat FC4
