Processing and Summarizing:
A. where is the Bermuda Triangle located?
The Bermuda Triangle is located off the United States. It is a stretch of the Atlantic Ocean
bordered by a line from Florida to the islands of Bermuda, to Puerto Rico and then back
to Florida. "The Bermuda or Devil Triangle is an imaginary area located off the
Southeastern Atlantic Coast of the United States" (Bermuda Triangle Fact Sheet, US
Coast Guard and US Navy,2001)
B. What is the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle?
The term "Bermuda Triangle" was first used in an article written by Vincent H. Gaddis in
1964. "In the article Gaddis claimed that in this strange sea a number of ships and planes
had disappeared without explanation" (www.unmuseum.org/ triangle.html). Several books
suggested that the disappearances were due to an intelligent, technologically advanced
race living in space or under the sea.
The best known mystery story was the story of Flight 19, in 1945. It was a routine practice
mission. They called for Taylor and his group of 13 men to fly to conduct practice
bombing runs. The last transmission from Flight 19 was heard after 5 hours. Planes that
searched the area didn't find a sign of them. Even today the final resting place of the
planes and their crews is still the Bermuda Triangle's secret.
C. What remains of the missing air planes or ships have been discovered?
Most of the "missing" sea-crafts, were found eventually far away from the Bermuda
Triangle.
From the air-crafts of Flight 19 nothing has been found. The crew of the SS Gaines Mill
observed an explosion over the water shortly after the plans had taken off. They headed
towards the site and there they saw what looked like oil and airplane debris floating on
the surface. None of it was recovered because of the bad weather, but there seem to be
little prospects these were the remains of the Mariner plans.
In 1991 five Avengers were found in 600 feet off the coast of Florida by the salvage ship
Deep Unfortunately. The examination of the planes showed that they were not Flight 19.
D. What are the theories about the disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle?
Many theories attempting to explain the disappearances have been offered throughout
history.
For example : 1. In certain areas on earth the magnetic compass does point towards true
North. The difference between the two is known as compass variation. The amount of
variation changes by as much as twenty degrees between the magnetic North to the
geographic North. This variation or error may cause that the navigator could find himself
far off courses and in deep trouble.
2. Another theory about the disappearances of many planes and small or big ships is
attached to UFO's. "It's sometimes claimed that they have been "stolen" by flying
saucers" (Bermuda Triangle- Truth or Myth?, The Observer). People claim that the UFOs
cause the lost of gravity in the area, some claim that the UFOs are sending energy
causing the disappearances of planes and ships to avoid them from coming near their
area again.
E. Where do facts end and legend starts?
The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle was more a legend than a fact, more hype than
reality. "In his book, The Bermuda Triangle Mystery- Solved, Kusche describes many of
the disasters in detail and finds that all of them have a logical explanation" (Bermuda
Triangle- Truth or Myth?, The Observer). The investigation shows that nearly all the
accidents had normal causes, such as bad weather, or unfamiliarity with the area, facts
usually ignored by writers who love to perpetuate the myth of the Triangle. Often a
triangle writer had noted a ship or plan had disappeared in "calms seas" when the record
showed a raging storm had been in progress. Furthermore, Taylor's (the leading pilot)
mother got the Navy to change the report to read that the disaster was for "causes or
reasons unknown". This may have spared the woman's feeling of lost, but blurred the
actual facts.
"Those who like to spread mysterious stories conveniently leave out any fact which
doesn't suit their case" (Bermuda Triangle- Truth or Myth?, The Observer).
Our theory is that the Bermuda Triangle mystery is not a real mystery but a coincidence of
tragedies in that area. Most of the disappearances seem to be environmental and caused
by human errors. We think there is an explanation for everything in our world.
