W elcome to the January and February edition of

The Chingford Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory. So, yet another year has begun. Being a particularly jaded, cynical and unpleasant person, it gives me great pleas-ure to make no resolutions each New Year and to watch

my friends and colleagues fail miserably in theirs. I did make one resolution this year, and that was to con-tinue with the yearly Round Robin e-mail that I send to everybody in my address book. They love it. They eagerly await my news – how the twins are growing. Little Trevor is a marvel on the clarinet, and Trevorina has taken up Latin dancing, and still they are only three. I know people love these. I get hilari-ous tongue-in-cheek replies, like “Please stop pester-ing us with these e-mails!” and “We’re simply not interested in your pet dog’s digestion!” How my friends all make me laugh!

On a personal note, it’s interesting to see the tone

of my communications decline. Where once were hopes of holidays and adventure, the e-mail now is more of a health bulletin, listing the excruciating minutiae of my anatomy’s decline, moans, groans, aching bones, a list of possible operations, some vague word of hope for the future, and all leading to a climactic platitude about the weather.

Here’s to 2014 then. Hope the weather’s nice.

F irst they made us bungee jump into a barrel of lard. Then we

had to burrow through a tunnel of rats. But the eating of kangaroo parts was the last straw. Yup. Cornwall has really gone downhill. So we decided that the next holiday would be of an altogether gentler tempo, staid, relaxing – and what could be more staid and relaxing than a good cardigan. We would go to the place whence cardigans got their cardigan name – yes, obviously, of course, that’s right – Plwmp. My first holi-day in a town with no pubs, hotels or vowels. Other re-sorts are available. We just, well, you know, plumped for this one.

Anyhow – it turns out that this Plwmp, however you pronounce it, is a village on the Cardigan coast and the Cardigan coast is the less well known part-ner to the Pembrokeshire coast – the Beardsley, if you will, to Lineker, the Zeppo to Groucho, the other blokes in the original Oasis to the famous ones.

If Pembroke brings to your mind images of sandy coves and clifftop paths, of pastel villages in wooded bays and harbour walls above the waves, you can get all of that stuff along the Cardigan coast, but without the lines of ramblers obscuring the view.

The Cardigan coast path is about 60 miles long, and runs from the town of Cardigan at its southern tip to Ynyslas, just beyond Aberystwyth.

The short section from Aberporth to Tresaith is along an all-weather, surfaced cliff-top path with spectacular views. The southern half of this section is wheelchair friendly.

Further along, pretty Llangrannog, once a small port, sits in a sheltered cove, peeping out between rocks at the sea like a nosey neighbour through the chintz curtains. The village not only has pubs but has three vowels to boast of.

To the north again, New Quay sits on a sloping hillside, the houses of pink and lime green and turquoise forming a pastel mosaic in the evening light. A harbour wall (of course) curves cautiously out into the sea, like a toddler dipping its toes, and it is from here that you get to watch for dolphins. They visit regularly and nose between the moored fishing boats, like curious tourists. Boats, mean-while, take the human visitors out to sea for a closer glimpse, but you can stand on the harbour wall and generally see a dolphin or two. New Quay was partially the inspiration for Llareggub in Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood, and a trail through the town visits spots connected with the poet’s stay.

Aberaeron (which makes up for Plwmp’s short-comings by practically exploding with vowels) was another harbour and shipbuilding town, its architec-ture also washed in pastel shades as dignified houses gaze rather sternly down on the harbour, remembering perhaps a grander past and a little

indignant at the leisure craft moored there now. Green rolling hills rise in the background.

Near the northern tip of the coastal path, Aber-ystwyth (which arguably has 4 vowels although I can only see a couple) is the administrative centre of the area. The arrival of the railway in 1864 brought with it a boom in tourism and grand Victo-rian hotels and houses line the curving promenade. At one end is a castle, while, at the northern end, Constitution Hill rises to give views out to sea and across the hills inland. A funicular, which once was the longest in the British Isles, gives easy access to the top where there is a camera obscura. (Turns out this is just a big old building – I was disap-pointed as I’d been hoping to find a really obscure Nikon.)

The last stretch of the coastal path heads off from here to its final destination at Ynyslas, and I have to confess I’ve never been there, so I can’t possibly comment. Thanks to the internet, how-ever, I can inform you that there are sand dunes and a Nature Reserve. Research just ain’t what it used to be.

That’s Cardigan well and truly covered. Next year, we’re going somewhere that doesn’t make my spell-check explode. Maybe Sri Lanka.

Lord Mayor's Prize Winner visits Epping Forest Deer Sanctuary

O ne lucky winner of a Lord Mayor’s Appeal prize raffle has enjoyed a

day out at Epping Forest’s deer sanctuary and a tour of the forest extension ‘Gifford Wood’, ac-companied by Epping Forest Keepers.

Val Rogers and partner, Ian, [from Buckinghamshire] accompa-nied by friends John and Pauline won the prize at the Lord Mayor’s Tree party in The Man-sion House back in June. The event was held to raise money for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, includ-ing Epping Forest’s Gifford Wood Appeal.

Val said: “We had a fabulous time and it was a privilege to spend the day with the Forest Keepers – they’re such knowledgeable people – and we learned a lot about the Forest”.

In July 2012, The City of London Corporation, which runs Epping Forest, paid £270,000 to acquire 30 acres of land at Horseshoe Hill and the Appeal is funding the planting of 4,500 trees on the site, as well as scrub, glades and ponds. Epping Forest has over 50,000 veteran trees, far more than any other UK site. The trees to be planted at Gifford Wood will be mainly native oak and hornbeam, to reflect the mix of veteran trees for which Epping Forest is the most important site in the UK, and indeed in Europe.

However, the project also provides an opportu-nity to plant some species more tolerant of pro-jected changes in climate. A mix of alder, birch,

beech, cherry, field maple, rowan, small lime, wild apple, wild service, holly and yew will also be planted, creating a seed-bank to secure these spe-cies for the future. Shrubbery includes hawthorn, hazel and spindle.

The Lord Mayor’s Appeal is a grant giving char-ity, which has established a long-running relation-ship with City of London donors. Its Board of Trustees includes the Lord Mayor Roger Gifford and a small number of Aldermen of the City of London, yet to be Lord Mayor. The Lord Mayor’s appeal supports five charities: the City Music Foun-dation, Futures for Kids, Gifford Wood Appeal, The Harold Samuel Collection and The Lord Mayor’s Scholarship Programme.

C ook & Son are a small family business with

over 40 years experi-ence in the roofing trade. In 1964 Michael Cook started as a trainee roofer with the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Having learned the trade Mi-chael then in 1967 started his own business, gaining more knowledge over the years as new materials and techniques arrived. Michael’s son, Peter, joined him in the business in 1985 and he was able to teach Peter all aspects of the roofing trade. In 2002 they went into full partnership and formed the Ltd Company.

As a company they continue to keep up with latest developments in the roofing trade. Peter has gained a Level 2 NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in Roofing Occupations – Roof Slater and Tiler and has successfully completed an Assessed Training Module in Sheet Lead Boss-ing and Welding. In addition Peter passed a Construction Industry Training Board Health and Safety Test and attended and passed a St John Ambulance Emergency Aid in the Workplace course.

Cook & Son have concentrated on the domestic side of the roofing market with most of their work being within and around the London Borough of Waltham Forest. A high percentage of their work comes from recommendations and refer-ences. Michael’s wife, Elizabeth is responsible for the office work, answering the phone and dealing with the paperwork. Elizabeth keeps portfolios and files of letters and references from customers. These are available on request if you are considering having some roofing work done. On the opposite page are extracts from a small fraction of letters received from customers, as well as a selec-tion of photos from completed jobs. I think these

speak for themselves of customer’s satisfaction with the quality of work and service provided by Cook & Son.

All new work carried out complies with local au-thority building regulations. Cook & Son are regis-

tered with the Environment Agency and hold a licence as a carrier for the disposal of controlled waste.
