W elcome to the November and December edition of The Chingford Directory,

your local community magazine and busi-ness Directory.

2012 is drawing to a close, and it’s been quite a year for me. I started the year working in the library, standing behind a counter, grinning inanely and being of precious little use to anybody. Well that’s all changed. I now work for the City of London in Epping Forest, where I stand behind a counter, grinning inanely and being of precious little use to anybody. Evidently I was really good at this. My employers were so impressed with the inane grin and the uselessness that they have taken me on on a permanent basis. The fools. I’m now Assistant Inane Grinner to the Head Inane Grinner. Upwards and onwards.

But rest assured that, alongside these onerous duties of grinning and useless-ness, I shall continue to devote my fullest attention to the inanities that I contribute to these pages. You don’t escape that lightly. And now that we are bi-monthly, I’m planning to be twice as inane and useless. That seems to be working out quite well.

I n 1965, my Dad went back to his old university, where a giant computer occupied several of the old physics labs. Wires sprang from cabinets, and

looped overhead, and doubled back on themselves and linked to lights that flashed at random intervals. Something or other made the occasional bleep. Streams of paper ran to and fro on reels behind Perspex windows. The very air seemed to smell of progress and electricity. Somewhere there was a bell.

Dad sat at a table which was covered with but-tons, switches, sliding things and a bell, and he pa-tiently entered the coded programme that he had prepared.

“Fingers crossed then,” he said to a bloke in a white coat, then pressed some buttons. The vast computer groaned into action. More lights flashed. The bleep became more frantic. Ribbons of paper streamed round and round.

“I’ve programmed it to calculate 2 + 2,” Dad said. The giant machine churned on and on into the

afternoon. Thunderous clunking noises came from behind glass partitions. Finally a card plopped onto the floor.

“Not bad,” Dad said, stooping to pick it up. “18.3. Think I’ll need to tweak the programme a touch though.”

Computers, of course, have changed greatly since that day in 1965. A washing machine now has more computing power than the Saturn rockets that took men to the moon. But, to Dad, the computer of 1965 was state of the art stuff.

It’s impossible to date the first computer as defini-tions vary. The word first appeared in 1613 to de-

scribe a person who did calculations. The general understanding of a computer, however, is of a ma-chine that can be programmed to perform opera-tions in logic, so Charles Babbage’s ‘analytical engine’ of 1837 is the first example of such a machine. It incorporated many features that would still be found in the 1965 version. Punched cards, an inbuilt mem-ory, an internal unit to carry out more complex procedures, loops and branches in its programming, and, most importantly, a bell. Babbage never com-pleted its construction, but his son demonstrated a version in 1906.

Alan Turing, famed for his work at Bletchley, was the man who is now regarded as the father of com-puter science. The Turing Machine, described in 1936, was a hypothetical device of different symbols on a tape that instructed the machine to perform different functions.

puter to be con-trolled through a programme.

In 1943, Tommy Flowers built the Colossus, the first electronic version.

Subsequent pro-gress in other branches of sci-ence, such as the printed circuit board and transis-tors, and, in the 1970s, microproc-essors, made com-puters faster and smaller and more powerful, until, in the 1980s, home computers began to appear. Without bells.

Nowadays, whether we like it or not, and often without our knowing it, computers control the world. Nobody saw it coming. Not Babbage. Not even my Dad. The novels from the golden age of Sci-Fi are seldom read now, as the authors could not foresee this future – their heroes travelled to stars, but couldn’t Google themselves a map to get home by.

Computers and modern phones open up all sorts of new ways for me not to keep in touch. Once upon a time, I would not phone my friends, or not write. But now the options seem infinite. I can not e-mail, not text, not Skype, and not contact them on all sorts of social networks. The possibilities for not keeping in

touch are now endless. And nobody foresaw this social aspect either,

where juvenile jibber-jabber is afforded the merit of political polemic, not because of what is said, but because each message reaches billions. What was once a scribbled note under a schoolboy’s desk now goes out on social networks, and the whole world can learn that Smelly Ellis Stinks. Nobody at all saw this coming. Not even my Dad.

F or a unique walking and cultural experi-ence 26 West Essex Ramblers recently travelled to Lengerich in north Germany.

Masterminded by Chingford members Frances and John Fogelman and German friends Helgard and Ulrich, they put on a programme of guided walks together with cultural and social events. During the 7 day trip they walked parts of a long distance path, Hermann's Weg. The visit also included conducted tours of the old city centres of Osnabrück and Münster.

The West Essex members stayed in a gasthof close to the small town of Lengerich where Helgard and Ulrich live, and on one day a local group joined the English participants for a his-torical tour of the town. Later the combined

group enjoyed a 6 mile ramble in the delightful wooded hills close by. Afterwards a typical Ger-man 'high tea' was put on making a delicious end to a busy and stimulating day.

Social events at the gasthof included a concert by a local choir, who encouraged the English to join in with the mainly German songs. On the last night a genial quiz took place, again involving both German and English members. New friends were made that evening and plans for an exchange visit at some time in the future were talked about.

E xploring Epping Forest by bike is a great way of getting away from it all, discovering London's biggest open space.

A group of local cyclists has raised an amazing £15k for Haven House, by taking part in a 300

mile charity bike ride from London to Amsterdam.

The challenge, led by Haven House supporter Terry Chinery, saw 15 amateur cyclists ride through Harwich, Arnhem and Utrecht, on a 3-day trip, with all funds raised coming to the hospice.

Terry from Buckhurst Hill explains; ‘We are a group of local amateur cyclists who wanted to have some fun on the bikes, set ourselves a challenge and raise money for Haven House – we’re all really proud of the amount we raised.’

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the Wood-ford Green hospice said; ‘We’re really pleased that Terry and his team decided to fundraise for Haven House. Another great example of how the local community gets behind the work that we do here with life-limited children and families.’

Calling all London Marathon Runners Local residents who have applied for the Virgin London Marathon 2013, will just be finding out whether they have been successful in obtaining an own place at the event.

For those that have, Haven House is urging them to consider running for the hospice. Chief Executive, Mike Palfreman, says;

‘Haven House does so much for life-limited children and their families in the area and it would be great to see local runners supporting us at an event as high profile as the London marathon.’

He continues; ‘We had 9 local runners last year, raising a good deal of money for the hos-pice, but we would really like to increase that next year, particularly as it’s our 10th birthday year.’

W e are approaching the peak purchase time for dogs and more dogs are bought as gifts than are

chosen by their owners. Christmas is a difficult time for a dog with a new owner and a new home. There is excitement in the air, people visiting, new commands and new routines to learn, perhaps even a new name! Last Christmas, a friend of a friend, arrived back from shopping in the Boxing Day sales to discover her partner’s Xmas gift, a Mastiff, had done a whoopsie on her new carpet! Within days, this new pooch ended up in a freezing rescue centre to await its fate with thousands of others over the New Year period. Sadly, not many people will adopt a dog in January – the weather is just not good enough to enjoy going out before daylight to walk a dog prior to starting their day.

There are several points to consider when purchasing a dog. Firstly, the breed needs to be researched as they vary in health and time requirements. Many breeds have genetic illnesses and can cost thousands of pounds in vets’ bills during their lifetime - and this is a great inconvenience to their owners. Some breeds, such as dalmatians, setters, collies, etc., are bred to run 60 miles a day and need a vast amount of exercise. It is hard these days to find

public parks where dogs can be let off the lead, and some dogs, such as the Saluki, can never be allowed off the lead because they do not come when they are called. If around children, dogs need to be

chosen carefully, as some can be snappy or fiercely protective of their space.

Never buy a dog from the internet, a pet shop or a puppy farm. Pups have often not been handled and might never fully be comfortable

with human beings. If you get a dog which has had a previous owner, make sure that it has been lovingly cared for and is adaptable to its new environment. All reputable rehoming centres are closed over the Xmas period to discourage impulse buys. The Dogs’ Trust, Battersea, Blue Cross and the RSPCA have a

strict adoption procedure and all dogs are vetted for their attitude to people, other dogs and cats. Sadly, reputable rehoming centres need to euthanase thousands of dogs each year which have been cruelly treated and are permanently emotionally damaged and therefore cannot be rehomed.

Some dogs, such as Greyhounds need a five feet fence to contain them but if given regular long walks, greyhounds can be rehomed to owners without a garden.

C hingford Parish Church Choir have com-pleted another busy and acclaimed sum-mer, they are now looking forward to an

exciting future. This year the choir have been broadcast twice on BBC Radio 2’s “Sunday Half Hour”, sung Evensong at St Paul’s cathedral, sung a weekend of services at Gloucester cathedral and a week singing the services at Hereford cathedral.

Reverend Canon Andrew Piper, the Precentor at Hereford cathedral, wrote in a letter to the choir: “your choir is without doubt one of the best parish church choirs that we have hosted in the 9½ years that I have served here as precentor: indeed, the standard of music that you delivered was higher than could be achieved by quite a few English cathedral choirs!”

The boys and girls choirs make a huge contribu-tion attending two rehearsals and one or two ser-vices most weeks of the year. The dedication of their young people to perform new and challenging sacred music week-in, week-out is a timely reminder how special and good young people

really are. This is an exciting period for Ss Peter and Paul

and Chingford Parish Church Choir with the immi-nent installation of their new Rector, Fr. John Con-nell, and that they now have planning permission to rebuild their Parish Hall which will include a dedicated Song School where their excellent choirs can rehearse. Mike Emerson, Director-of-Music said “The choirs and our extensive music library have long outgrown the cramped vestry built as part of the original church. To have new rehearsal and storage facilities will be wonderful; and combined with a new hall will also be of great benefit to the wider community.”

Once fundraising is complete and the hall rebuilt, it will be a wonderful venue for celebrations and clubs, including a new accessible entrance onto Chingford Green.

E xperimenting, breaking boundaries and creat-ing something completely ‘new’ does not always bring fame and fortune. Many people

credit Thomas Edison or Joseph Swan with discov-ering the lightbulb but it was actually invented 78 years earlier by one Humphry Davy. Relatively un-known Chingford guitar legend Steve Hillage has been at the forefront of the music industry for over 40 years and is a true pioneer.

Stephen Simpson Hillage was born in Chingford on 2nd August 1951. Whilst still at school he joined his first band, ‘Uriel’, with keyboardist Dave Stew-art. However, Steve left the band to attend the University of Kent in 1969. At university in Canter-bury, Steve played with the band ‘Caravan’ and their manager got Steve a solo deal with Decca Records. Hillage released his first album ‘Fish Rising’ and lit up the music community that had become known as the ‘Canterbury Scene’ especially with the 17-minute psychedelic jam session called “Metempsychosis”.

In 1973 Steve Hillage joined Anglo-French psyche-delic band ‘Gong’ and his “silky, spacey guitar playing illuminated ‘Gong’’s best work”. (1) During this time ‘Gong’ recorded their most famous works ‘You’, ‘Angel’s Egg’ and ‘Flying Teapot’. But Steve’s solo success started to take off as ‘Fish Rising’ followed critical acclaim by reaching Number 33 in the album charts. This established Steve as one of the trailblaz-ers of progressive rock music. Other solo album’s followed with “L” released in 1976, “Motivation Radio” in 1977 and “Green” in 1978, a co-production with Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason. Steve also had time to play the guitar pieces on Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’.

Throughout the 1980s Steve moved into music producing. He created studio albums with ‘Simple

Minds’, ‘It Bites’ and ‘The Charlatans’. But Steve wasn’t finished creating music. His 1970’s tunes had inspired a new wave of artists including ‘The Orb’’s Alex Paterson, Carl Craig, Paul Oakenfold and ‘Orbital’. The godfather ambient techno music of the 1990s was the creative genius from 1970s prog-rock.

Steve Hillage still tours to this day with his pro-gressive rock band and his ambient outfit ‘System 7’. Hillage remains a reluctant guitar hero but his con-tribution to modern music has been over-looked for far too long: “He can rightly claim to have cre-ated some of the most startlingly original 6 string manifestations in rock history and is virtually peer-less in the ambient-rock genre”. (2) So do keep a look out for any hidden music legends you meet in the Mount or have seen on the Green!

T he coming of Christmas and with award season just around the corner, some of the biggest films of the year are released in November and December. Peter Jackson returns with The Hobbit (14th December)

and Tom Cruise stars in the all-action Jack Reacher (26th December). How-ever, your local reviewer hasn’t seen those movies so here are some of the best films in the last months of 2012. Enjoy! Released: 2nd November - The Master This is a horrible movie to sit through but one of the best films of the year. Joaquin Phoenix plays a US sailor struggling to return to civilian life after the horrors of World War II. He joins a cult that uses fanaticism and lies as relig-ion but comes to question how much of a difference it is making in his life. This is a beautiful, moving film that may make you squirm in parts but you’ll be applauding by the end. 9th November - People Like Us Sam is a salesman with money troubles. Salvation appears when his hated father dies leaving $150,000. How-ever, Sam is charged with giving the money to a recovering alcoholic he’s never met. Who happens to be his long lost sister. Although a contrived concept, this is an emotionally resonant drama, nicely shot film about the complexity of family relationships and a lesson on not taking life at face value.

7th December - The Odd Life of Timothy Green There is a special something about this movie and that makes it a perfect fam-ily film for Christmas. A childless couple bury a box in their garden containing all of their wishes for a son. An infant soon appears but young Timothy Green is not your average boy. Although produced by Disney Pictures, this is not their regular fair engaging with issues of adoption and bullying. But this is a charming, witty and sweet movie for everyone. 20th December - Life of Pi Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) directs a visually breathtaking adaptation of Yann Martel’s best-selling book. The plot revolves around an Indian boy named ‘Pi’ who, after a shipwreck, finds himself on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. However, his only company is a hyena, a zebra, and an orang-utan. And a 450-pound Bengal tiger. The film relies heavily on its sumptuous cinematography and is a fitting visualisation of the book.

DVDs to please With Christmas fast approaching the shelves are stocked with the best DVDs and Blu- Rays of the year. From TV-land there’s Downton Abbey - Series 1-3 (5th Nov on DVD rrp: £44.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £49.99) with every episode of the Emmy Award win-ning show and, starring Dustin Hoffman, Luck - Sea-son 1 (3rd Dec DVD rrp: £19.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £24.99) is stunning. HAVE FUN LEARNING TO PLAY BRIDGE Ray Green invites you to join the East London Bridge Club. This is what he said,

“Bridge is a trick taking game of skill and chance played by four players who form two partnerships; the partners sit opposite each other at the table.

Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit and a learning process that never ends. It can be exciting, challeng-ing, frustrating but never boring.

It is a social card game that includes strategy, trust and teamwork. You can develop friendships with others who are learning and already playing bridge. It is also a great way to sharpen your memory and exercise the brain.

Once you have learnt the basics of bridge you are able to practice with friends. The only cost is a cou-ple of packs of cards and the tea and biscuits.

From Friday 18th January 2013 I shall be giving afternoon lessons from 2.30-4.30pm. These will be on every Friday except 29th March (Easter).

I am offering a 32-lesson course that will cover all aspects of this interesting game and help you to be ready to play in one of the many local bridge clubs.

Each 2-hour lesson including a tea/coffee and bis-cuit break is £10 per person. You only pay for the lessons you attend and will be given the opportunity to cover missed lessons on a later course. On these lessons you will be partnered with another member of the class. You are of course welcome to join with one or more friends and learn in a relaxing, comfort-able home environment.

Later in this course I also offer supervised bridge play. These are 2 hour play sessions on Wednesday afternoons 2.30-4.30 pm and on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30 pm.

For those who wish to improve their bridge play I organise intermediate evening lessons on the second

and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 7.30 – 9.30pm.”
