2016 - 2017 Season
T H E C U R S E O FT H E N I N T H
1 3 T H S E A S O N
Along the way, we will be collaborating
with a number of fantastic artists from near
and far, including Maestro Nicholas Carthy
as our first regular-season guest conductor
with the orchestra, the prize-winning
young violinist Yabing Tan, our favorite
returning violinist Lindsay Deutsch, and
Boulder’s own Karen Bently Pollick. Intrigue
will be added to the mix with the Boulder
premiere of the Beatles Suite for Violin and
Orchestra by Maxime Goulet, and a brand-
new Concerto for Violin and Orchestra
by American composer David Jaffe. And
the grand finale, Beethoven’s 9th, will be
performed in collaboration with the Boulder
Chorale under the direction of
Vicki Burrichter.
We’ll let you decide if Jinx, the Curse of the
9th is our best season yet!

M U S I C D I R E C T O R A N D C O N D U C T O R
It’s been an exciting and challenging twelve
seasons. As always, we’re grateful for
your support, encouragement, and endless
generosity, which have made the BCO what
it is now.
This, our thirteenth season, is called Jinx
for obvious reasons. But in musical history
the term Jinx has been associated with two
numbers: 13 and 9. There’s an interesting
reason for this. Several great composers
after Beethoven—whose nine monumental
symphonies constitute the very definition
of greatness—were tormented by the idea
that they too had to prove their merit with
nine symphonies, their entire life’s work
culminating in the last of these, the great
9th. We call this The Curse of the 9th!
Symphonies by various later composers,
including Schubert and Bruckner, were
renumbered to put the best one last. Brahms
and Mendelssohn didn’t even compose nine
symphonies, thus avoiding the Jinx!
Scholars believe that it took Brahms
between eighteen and twenty-one years
to compose his first symphony precisely
because he was terrified of being compared
to Beethoven and needed this extra time
to complete it to his own satisfaction. The
work contains a rather bold reference to
Beethoven’s Ode to Joy melody in the finale.
When one concertgoer remarked on this
resemblance at the symphony’s premiere,
Brahms acidly replied: “Any ass could
see that.”
Highlighting this anxious yearning to have
one’s greatest symphony stand up to the
symphonic Goliath that was Beethoven, we
begin the season with Brahms’s Symphony
No. 1 and end it with Beethoven’s 9th.
In between, we will visit symphonic
masterpieces by Mendelssohn and Schubert
as well.
Our jinx is your good fortune...A F E W K I N D W O R D S T O O U R

With her limitless enthusiasm
and vast gifts as a performer and
entertainer, American violinist
Lindsay Deutsch has emerged
as a charismatic and captivating
presence on today’s music scene.
Described by the L.A. Times as
having “the technical equipment
and temperament for a big
career,” she has thrilled audiences
throughout the U.S. and Canada
with her passion for music and
brilliant display of technique and
musicianship.
Ms. Deutsch’s Project:
CLASSIFIED is gaining significant
attention with classical music
presenters as well as with local
clubs, theatres, and pop music
series. Project: CLASSIFIED
targets the most recent
generations of Americans who
have not grown up with an
appreciation for or knowledge
of classical music. Offering a
mixture of classical and crossover
music, dressed down and
performed in a familiar setting—
such as a bar, restaurant, club,
or outdoor venue—Ms. Deutsch is
paving the way for today’s artists
to reach a whole new generation
of audience members. This “one-
woman show” has reinvented the
traditional classical violin recital
by featuring the great classical
repertoire alongside her own
unique arrangements of pop, jazz,
folk, and rock.
Lindsay’s down-to-earth and
humorous conversations,
in addition to her amazing
violinistic abilities, bridge
the classical and popular
aspects of music, resulting in
an astounding performance of
virtuosity, groove, elegance, and
energy. She frequently appears
as guest soloist with American
and Canadian symphonies. Her
recent orchestral engagements
include the Colorado, Fort
Worth, Missoula, New West, Las
Cruces, Pensacola, Irving, Cape,
Knoxville, South Carolina, and
West Virginia Symphonies as
well as the Los Angeles, McGill,
Portland, and Boulder Chamber
Orchestras. Ms. Deutsch’s
performance of Astor Piazzolla’s
Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
with the Los Angeles Chamber
Orchestra, conducted by Jeffrey
Kahane, was selected for NPR’s
Symphony Cast Program.
Ms. Deutsch’s movie credits
include playing the solo-violin
sound track for the movie The
Good Shepherd, starring Robert
De Niro. She feels strongly that
the young people of today need to
have opportunities to be exposed
to the world of classical music.
In 2007, Lindsay and her sister,
Lauren, co-founded a nonprofit
organization, the Classics Alive
Foundation (www.classicsalive.
org), dedicated to building
classical music audiences. The
Youth Orchestra Residency
Program, now in its fourth

year, has grown into a popular
nationwide program for youth
orchestras in which Ms. Deutsch
is actively involved.
As a chamber musician, Ms.
Deutsch has collaborated with
such musicians as Gil Shaham,
Jeffrey Kahane, ChoLiang Lin,
Arnold Steinhardt, Chee-Yun,
Alisa Weilerstein, Gary Hoffman,
and the members of the St.
Lawrence String Quartet. Ms.
Deutsch received her education
from the Colburn Conservatory
in Los Angeles, where she
studied under Robert Lipsett.
She performs on an 1845 Jean-
Baptiste Vuillaume violin.

Internationally renowned
Lebanese percussionist and
composer Rony Barrak held his
Darbouka (Middle Eastern Tabla)
at the tender age of four and
began playing it intuitively. Led
by early self-confidence, he made
his first TV performance at the
age of seven and then proceeded
to improve his skills through
school and family performances.
At the age of seventeen, Rony
distinguished himself in the
world of music by winning the
Gold Medal in a competition
on the Lebanese Broadcasting
Corporation International (LBCI)
television for talented young
musicians in Lebanon and the
Middle East. This achievement
encouraged him to unleash the
Darbouka from the chains of its
long-standing traditional context
and explore its full potential. He
moved to London in 1990 where
he studied orchestral percussion
and drum kit at the Guildhall
School of Music and Drama and
later taught Middle Eastern
Percussion at Trinity College of
Music. Rony became a British
citizen in year 2000 and has dual
citizenship of Lebanon and the
U.K.
Blending eastern and western
flavors, Rony is a versatile
percussionist, composer, pianist,
and arranger. He plays and
composes his own fusion style—a
colorful blend of Arabic, Latin,
Jazz, funk, New Age and chill-
out. In addition to being the
world’s leading Darbouka player,
he assembled his own unique
percussion set. He incorporated
into his performances fascinating
instruments such as car parts,
demonstrating an uncanny
ability to create rare, exciting
combinations out of found
objects.
Rony’s love for classical music
propelled him to compose
symphonic pieces, taking
his effort to bring together
eclectic music traditions to the
next level. Since 2009 he has
composed and premiered three
compositions—dramatic, graceful,
and spontaneous symphonic
poems featuring his Darbouka—in
the US and Germany. Over the
years, he has performed with
many world-renowned symphony
orchestras and conductors as a
Darbouka soloist. Besides original
symphonic compositions, Rony
has also achieved breakthrough
success since 2005 as a soloist
with Symphonic Game Music

The Boulder Chorale is the oldest
and largest community chorus in
Boulder and one of the oldest and
largest in the region.
Today, the Boulder Chorale is
inter-generational, with 150-
200 singers aged 6 to 88, and 5
ensembles performing separately
and together, in collaboration
with other local musicians,
for a total of 8-10 professional
performances annually, plus
additional free, public concerts at
high-profile community events
and venues.
Several milestones over the last
50 years yielded this substantial
growth. In 1968 the small group
found a director, Carolyn Bowles
(later Wayland), who would lead it
until 1986. Performances became
regularly scheduled events; the
repertoire expanded beyond
operatic sounds. Collaborations
