    Paul Dunbar was born in Dayton,

    Ohio June 27, 1872.Paul Dunbar wrote his first poem

    when he was only six years old.

    Dunbar gave his first public recital.

    Dunbar edited and published the

    Dayton Tattler newspaper with thehelp from Orville and WilburWright and their printing machine.

    Pauls Boring Jobs

    Pauls job was to pick up boxes at the shippingdepartment at the National Cash Register Company.

    Paul quit that tiring job. Paul became elevator operator in the Calahan building

    for four dollars a week.

    Dunbar started to like his job. Paul saw his former English teacher Mrs.Truesdell at the

    Calahan building while waiting for passengers.

    Dunbar thought about writing in dialect. Dunbar wrote Oak and Ivy with some poems in dialect and some in

    English.An example of Dunbars dialect poems is below.

    Lias! Lias! Bless de Lawd!

    Don you know de days erbroad?

    Ef you don git up, you scamp,

    Deyll be trouble in dis camp.

    Tink I gwine to let you sleepWile I meks yo boad an keep?

    Dats a putty howdy-do-

    Don you hyeah me, Lias-you?

    Majors and Minors

    Paul Dunbar wrote his second book Majorsand Minors with many different poems

    such as Dawn, and When Malindy sings. This book also has standard English

    poems and Dialect Poems.

    Paul in England

    Paul went to England for a short time. Paul stayed in a grubby little room in London Paul wrote his very first novel The Uncalled there. Paul was broke so he moved back to the United States.

    Paul met Alice right before he went to London. Alice was a teacher in Brooklyn. Dunbar moved to Washington where he found a nice

    looking house.

    The sick Paul

    Pauls health was terrible he was coughingup blood.

    Paul drank to stay on his feet but he wasdrinking too much.

    Paul got sicker and sicker every day.

    Pauls life was being destroyed.

    Paul back in Dayton

    Paul and his mother moved back to Dayton. Bud Burns came to see Paul every day. Admirers sent him many things, one sent him a dog. Paul was taking care of a chick named Blackie who rode

    on his shoulder.

    The dog and Blackie became Pauls companions.

    Paul was in the latter stages of tuberculosis.

    Paul Dunbar died in Dayton, Ohio February 91906
