TheSubseaIntegrityDepartmentwasdelightedinAugusttotakedeliveryofanewNeptunesystemchristened‘BlackBeauty’duetoitsblack,non-reflectivelivery.Thisisthethirdsystemtogointoservicewithnumberfouralreadyontheproductionline,whichwillfeatureauniquesubseaPhasedArraycapability.OverthelastfiveyearsNeptunehasproveditselftobeaversatileandeffectivetoolinthesubseaassetintegritymarketaswellasbeinganexcellentfitwithOceaneering’sglobalsubseaservices.

SpecificallydesignedtobedeployedbyanyclassofRemotelyOperatedVehicles(ROV),Neptuneiscapableofcapturinghighresolution,ultrasonicinspectionimagesfromrigidpipelinesandflexiblerisers.Neptuneisoneofthekeylinks

betweenOceaneering’sAssetIntegrityexpertiseanditshugeROVcapability.NeptunecarriesultrasonicpulseechotransducersforwallthicknessandcorrosionmappingplusTimeofFlightDiffraction(TOFD)transducersfordetailed,volumetricsubseapipelineweldinspection.NeptunehasbeensuccessfullydeployedaroundtheworldbyarangeofROVvehiclesfromsmallinspectionsizeuptolargeMillenniumsizedworkclassvehicles.Ithascarriedoutinspectionsdowntoadepthof1400metersandhasanoperatingrangeof3000m(intotheabyss!).

TheSubseaIntegrityDepartmentisrelativelynewbutarapidlyexpandingentityunderAssetIntegritywithintheOceaneeringorganisation.

WithsuccessfultrialsrecentlycompletedforamajorUSclient,aplatformhasbeencreatedforasignificantsubseaintegritypushintotheGulfofMexicoregion.Historicallysubseaassetintegrityreliedonaprobabilistic,mathematicalapproachincorporatingcautioussafetymargins.WithNeptunetheactualplantconditionstatuscanbequicklyandcosteffectivelyobtainedtodirectlysupportaccurateFitnessForPurposeandRemainingLifeAssessments,withtherealpotentialforsignificantcostsavingsfromunnecessaryitemreplacement.

Inallpartsoftheworld,asROVinterventionbecomesmoreroutine,theopportunityforOperatorstocalloffadvancedsubseatoolslikeNeptunebecomescorrespondinglygreater.WithOceaneering’sglobalfootprintandtheworld’slargestROVfleetitisideallyandexcitinglyplacedtoprovidetheseadvancedinspectionandintegrityservices.

Regularreadersofthe‘InspectionStandard’mayrememberanarticlein2009whereweannouncedthattheOceaneeringteamworkingontheBP“InspectionandCorrosionManagement”contract,collectively,hadloggedtheirone-millionthconsecutivehourwithoutalost-timeincident.Wellthisamazingachievementdidn’tstopthere.Wearenowpleasedtocongratulateallconcernedonextendingtheachievementto3.2millionman-hours.

UnderthetermsofthecontractOceaneeringprovideRisk-BasedInspectionplansderivedfromdetailedcorrosionassessmentsbasedonconventionalandadvancedNDTdata.InadditionOceaneeringprovidetrendanddefectanalysestosupportfacilitymaintenance,repairplansandstatutorycompliancerequirements.

BPacknowledgedOceaneeringonitsachievementwhichstartedin2006withanawardpresentedtoJohnWatkinson,VicePresidentAssetIntegrityandtooktheopportunitytorecognisethesignificantcontributionandsupporttodateworkingwithBPontheirContractorSafetyManagementPilotscheme.TheawardtookplaceattheBPstrategicsupplierforumatBPNorthSeaHeadquartersinAberdeenonThursday10thOctober2013.

Thisamazingmilestoneisasuccessinitself,butitisalsoanindicationthatallthehardworkgoingonwithinOceaneeringispayingoff.Our

operationsareleaner,tidier,andsaferthanever.It’saqualityenvironmentthathasapositiveimpactoneveryaspectofourbusiness.

An‘AdvancedNon-DestructiveTesting’opendaywashostedinAberdeenbyOceaneeringSpecialistInspectionServicesfrom30th–31stJuly2013.TheopendayprovidedtheopportunityforclientsandemployeestoupdatetheirknowledgeintheRiskBasedAssessment(RBA)processanditseverincreasingandcrucialpartinthedeliveryofNon-IntrusiveInspection(NII).Thedayincludedpracticaldemonstrations,presentationsandcasestudieswithexpertsonhandtodiscussintegrityissues.

Thedemonstrationsincluded:SubseaInspection,DigitalRadiography,MediumRangeUT,FlashX-Ray,CorrosionMapping,GuidedWaveTechnology,PhasedArray,PulsedEddyCurrent,TubeInspection,ACFMandthenew‘Paperless’TDHandyScanUltrasonicEquipment.

Theopendayprovedahugesuccess,withover100attendeesincludingrepresentativesfromthemajorityofourmajorclientsalongwithmanypotentialnewcustomers.Feedbackfromallvisitorswasextremelypositive.Anumberofvisitorscommentingonhowusefulthepresentationsandpracticaldemonstrationswere.Wearepleasedtosaythatanumberofcontracts

weresecuredasaresultofthedayforthetechnologiesonshow.

Visitorsexpressedakeennesstoattendsimilaropendaysonaregularbasisandwiththatinmind,OceaneeringAssetIntegrityisplanningtohostanotherworkshopinearly2014.

Thelongawaited2013SouthTexasOilfieldExpotookplaceonSeptember18thand19thattheAmericaBankCentreinCorpusChristi,Texas.ThiswasthesecondannualeventofthepremiershowthatattractedmanysuppliersofvariousproductsandservicestargetingthespecificmarketoftheEagleFordShale.

Duetothesuccessofthe2012show,OceaneeringAssetIntegritydecidedtoparticipateforthefirsttimewithadisplayofservicespromotingbothourparticipationandourpresenceinthelocalmarket.Oceaneeringdisplayedsomeofitsuniqueandhighlydesiredservicestotheconferencevisitors.

IthasbeensaidthattheEagleFordShaleisquitepossiblythelargestsingleeconomicdevelopmentinthehistoryofthestateofTexas.OceaneeringAssetIntegrityhasdecidedtofocusonfindinggreaterwaystoparticipate,byprovidingmultipleservicestotheExploration&Production,Midstream,TransmissionandDownstreammarkets.In2013,itisestimatedthatcloseto$30billionwillhavebeenspentonfurtherdevelopmentintheon-shoreshaleplayoftheEagleFordShale.WithlocalofficesinIngleside,Oceaneeringarestrategicallylocatedtoservicethegrowingneedforassetintegrityservicesonnewandagingassets.

Oceaneeringlooksforwardtofuturebusinessopportunitiesthatmayarisefromthecontactsmadeduringtheconference.Inadditiontothedirectcontactswithoperators.Theeventprovedagreatopportunitytonetworkwithfellowserviceproviderstothemarket.AnumberofexcitingleadsweregeneratedthatwithhopefullygenerateadditionalrevenuefromtheEagleFordShale.

TheeventprovidedanidealopportunitytointroduceRogerThorneasAssetIntegrity’snewGeneralManagertothePerthOilandGascommunity.Rogerisseeninthephotographenjoyingaglassoflocalwine.

OceaneeringAssetIntegritywasoneoftherecordbreaking1500organisationsthatexhibitedatOffshoreEurope,Aberdeenon3rd–6thSeptember.ThiseventfromtheSocietyofPetroleumEngineers(SPE)attractsaglobalaudienceofengineers,technicalspecialists,industryleadersandexpertstoshareideasanddebatetheissuesofthemomentintheupstreamoilandgasindustry.

Over63,000peopleattendedthefourdayshow,withanincreaseofover25%onthe2011event.AssetIntegrityshowcasedmanyoftheirtechnologiesincluding:CSS,Neptune,PhasedArray,DigitalRadiographyandAssetConditionEvaluationTool(ACET).

TheOceaneeringstandwasdesignedandbuiltentirelybyourin-houseteamsthisyearforthefirsttime.ClosercommunicationandextensiveknowledgeonthemessageOceaneeringwantedtoconvey,enabledthedifferentdivisionstoworktogethertosuccessfullyrepresent‘OneOceaneering’.

Ourproductsandserviceshaveexpandedrapidlyoverthepastseveralyears,therefore2013sawOceaneeringpresentanddemonstratealargenumberofitsnewandinnovativetechnologies.

Thenewpremiseswillprovideworkshopfacilitiestoserveourclientsandanewofficespaceforemployees.

Allourexistingandpotentialclientswereinvitedtothegrandopeningtocelebratethisspecialevent.Over60visitorsfromvariouslocationsattendedtheopendaywithaspecialguestappearancefromPerLerøy,theMayorofAustrheimKommune.

Thedayincludeddemonstrationsandminiseminarson:NDT,Crane&Lifting,Non-IntrusiveInspectionandSubseaAssetIntegrity.TheeventalsoprovidedvisitorswiththeopportunitytoupdatetheirknowledgeonallofOceaneering’sproductsandservicesfromotherdivisionsincludingROV,NCA,RotatorandGrayloc.

DuringarecentIn-ServiceInspectiononajacketstructureinNorway,sixbadlycorrodednozzleswereidentifiedandrepairedbyMaintenanceServices(previouslyNCA)andtheIn-ServiceInspectiondepartmentfromAssetIntegrity.

Duetothedifficultlocationofthenozzlesonthejacketstructure,acoordinatedapproachwasnecessaryfrombothMaintenanceServicesandtheIn-ServiceInspection

department.FollowingseveralmeetingsitwasdecidedRopeAccesswastheappropriatesolutiontothechallenge.

TechniciansfromMaintenanceServicesattendedaRopeAccesstrainingcourseinStraume,NorwaytoinstructthemonRopeAccesstechniques.In-ServiceInspectiondepartmentprovidedaSafetySupervisorandaRopeAccessLevel2technician.

ThedefectswererepairedusingcarbonfibrewrappingtechniquesfromMaintenanceServices.

Inspiteofinhospitableweather,theaccessteamcompletedallofthenecessaryworkwithoutanyexternalassistance.

Thisisanotherexcellentexampleofcross-departmentalteamworkwithinAssetIntegrity.

SPECIALIST INSPECTION SERVICESGOESGLOBAL

Historically,Swansea,SouthWaleshasbeenthecentralhubforOceaneeringAssetIntegrity’sSpecialistInspectionServices(SIS).Thetechnologycentresuppliesnon-conventionalNDTmethodsincludingPhasedArrayUT,tubeinspection,corrosionmappingandelectromagnetictechniques.

Overthelast10yearyears,theSISdepartmenthasdevelopedadvancedNDTmethods,procuringspecialistequipment,trainingpersonnelandgeneratingoperatorproceduresforspecificmethods.

AsaglobalresourceforAssetIntegrity,SwanseahasbeenthepredominantproviderofqualifiedandexperiencedoperatorsinadvancedNDT.

Thedemandforspecialistinspectionmethodshassignificantlyincreasedinrecentyears.Thebenefitsofreducedplantshutdown,recordableinspectiondata,enhanceddefectsizingandimprovedrepeatabilitymakeadvancedNDTmethodsareliablesolutionforplantintegrity.Despitetheobviousbenefits,strictprotocolsfromHSEandotherregulatingbodies,hasledtoplantownersrequiringhighendtechnologysolutionsusinghighlyqualifiedspecialistinspectionengineers.

ThisincreaseindemandhasstretchedtheresourcesoftheSwanseadepartmentresultinginacompanyinitiativetoimplementsatelliteSISdepartmentsintheglobal

branches,underthesupportandcontrolofSwansea.ForthelastthreeyearscompetencytrainingandassessmentofremotelyoperatingSIStechnicianshasbeenon-going,witharapidincreaseoverthelasttwelvemonths.SixtechniciansworkingonvariousAngolanbasedprojects,sixMiddleEasternbasedtechniciansandadedicatedSISteaminNorwayhaverecentlyunder-takeninternaltraininginSpecialistNDTmethods.

Thisinitiativewillcontinueandincreasethroughout2014,withanemphasisnowfortheSISTechnicalManagerstohaveadeeperunderstandingoftheinspectionrequirementsinthegloballocations.Althoughintegrityissuesareoftenuniversal,specificlocationshaveindividualexpectationswhichrequiredifferentdevelopmentprogrammes,trainingpackagesandresourcecontrol.

SwanseawillcontinuetobethecentreofexcellenceforSpecialistInspectionServices.Asuccessfulglobalisationprogrammewillprovideexceptionalserviceandrecognitiononaglobalscale.

Tocelebratetheachievement,Oceaneeringranadesignalogocompetitionwithprojectmembersaskedtodesignaninnovativelogorepresentingthemilestone.TheawardforbestdesignwaspresentedtoThomasBoermaattheannualdinnerdance.UsingthecoloursfromBaku’snationalflag,hisdesigncapturedtheCaspiansafetycultureaswellassomeoftheregionallandmarks,andpresentedapositivesafetymessage.Jacketsbearingthislogowillbepresentedtoemployeeswhohavemadetheachievementpossible.Themembersoftheprojectteamhavecontinuedintheirdedicationtoimprovesafety,raisingstandardsanddeliveringaqualityservicewhichbenefitstheclient.Thismilestoneisanotherstepforwardinrecognisingthesafeworkingculturethateachandeverymemberoftheteamcontinuestofollowandpromote.

BUSINESSMANAGEMENTGRADUATEDEVELOPMENTPROGRAMME- OCEANEERING GETS PERSONAL!

I’mDaveRobason,oneofOceaneeringsBusinessGraduatesfor2012/14,andthefollowingisashortarticleonmyexperienceoftheBusinessGraduateprogramme.Now,morethanhalfwaythroughtheprogramme,Icanreflectonmyfirstyearandhopefullygiveanaccurateandhonestassessment.

Itallstartedwiththeapplicationprocessfortheposition,whichincludedaninitialapplicationtoHR,atelephoneinterview,aselectionday,includingapresentationandafinalinterview.IwassuccessfulinbeingacceptedontothebusinessgraduateprogrammeandwhetheritwasbecauseoforinspiteofmyrivetingpresentationontheeconomiceffectsoftheEurozonecrisisI’mnotsure!

InJune2012Istartedtheprogrammeanddiscoveredwhatitentailed.Yearoneoftheprogrammeinvolvedmeetingandgettingtoknowmanyofthesupportfunctionsmainlytoseehowthesework,butalsohowtheysupportandtieinwiththeoperationalaspectsofthebusiness.Eachareaoftheprogrammepresentedspecificlearningobjectives.Inpracticethisinvolvedrotationacrossninedepartmentsinthreeseparatelocationsandanawfullotofdifferentdesks!

OnaverageIhavespentaround6weekswitheachteam.InthattimeIhavecarriedoutdaytodaytasksasamemberoftheteamaswellasundertakingprojectsspecificallyassignedtometomeetwithmyobjectivesforthatparticularrotation.ForinstancewithintheBusinessSupportteammyobjectiveswerespecificallyrelatedtofinancialinformationandreporting,withinHSEtheyweredirectlytiedintotheaimsoftheteamitself.

Althoughconstantlymovingaroundandadaptingtoeachnewteamquicklyhasnotalwaysbeeneasy,everyonehasbeenfriendlyandwillingtohelp,(eventhoughI’msureattimesIhavebeenmoreofahindrancethanahelp),whichmadeitanenjoyablechallenge.

Theoverallaimoftheschemeistoprovidemewiththeskills,experienceandknowledgetopursueaprojectmanagementrole.Theprogrammehasbeenasteeplearningcurve,butcontinuestobeachallengeIamenjoyingandIlookforwardtothenext12months.
