Thoughtfully yours..... Dear Parents,

Assalamualaikum,

As we finally come to  the end of  the academic

a sense of accomplishment. It is always amazing

to  recollect  all  that  has  been  a ained  in  a

ma er  of  just  nine months.  The  achievements

consist  of  not  only  academic,  but  also  sports

and art ac vi es.

Along  with  the  in‐class  work  and  the  many

ac vi es  that  took place,  the children also had

their share of the fun  mes at school. The KG1s

enjoyed  a  day  filled  with  water  ac vi es  on  a

warm  summer  day,  while  the  KG2s  displayed

their  on  stage  skills  on  Nursery  Rhymes  Day.

This  year  Thema c  learning  was  introduced  in

the  KG3  classes.  It  helped make  learning more

structured and gave children an opportunity  to

leave their books aside and learn through more

hands‐on  ac vi es.  The  Grade  1s,  2s  and  3s

incorporated many prac cal ac vi es into their

Different Strokes - Mom and I Art Competition

A Decade......and still going strong! “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see…..”

One of the best practices of the last decade at Al Waha International Junior School, is the Art Competition “Different Strokes - Mom and I”. Mother and child paired up to spend time together in a fun filled environment.

Mrs. Regina Ashraf, Senior Supervisor of Junior School welcomed the gathering and the judges giving them an overview of the event. Ms. Intesar (Senior Art teacher, Manarat International School) and Mrs. Sara (KG Coordinator, Al Falah International School) kindly agreed to judge the competition. Mrs. Regina Ashraf explained the purpose behind this event saying, “You do not need to be artistic or creative in order to participate in this event, what’s important is creating a piece of art TOGETHER. This event was never about winning prizes and gifts; rather it was about spending quality time together, using the medium of art.”

Taking the children on a fantasy ride, the Supervisor, Mrs. Vaseema Baig then amused the children with a very special story about the lollipops that went missing and were later found stuck in the rainbow. The children were thrilled to find their lollipops mounted on a rainbow. Each lollipop provided little bits of information about art which the children could read as they enjoyed their candy.

      Events …...

It was heart-warming to see the eager mothers and their animated Grade 1 children on the artistically decorated Junior School grounds. The Art teacher, Ms. Alima Ali creatively articulates the bond between mother and child in vibrant colours when she plans the decor on the grounds, further lending meaning to the event.

The JThe Juniorsuniors

The competition began right after Ms. Alima read out the general instructions and guidelines to the participants. The mother and child team remained engaged, cutting, painting, sticking, exchanging ideas together, even as the judges walked between the tables to observe. The judges, Mrs. Sarah and Ms. Intesar were fascinated to see the various creations and the innovative ideas that were taking shape. The variety of materials used ranged from sponges, foam boards, barbeque sticks, socks, ropes, spray paints etc.

Mrs. Intesar said, “It is indeed a tough competition with so much good artwork produced with great effort.” You could see different kinds of puppets- sock puppets, paper puppets, hand puppets etc., aquariums, treasure chests……and some amazing paintings.

After their work, the children rushed to the Special Rainbow to collect their lollipops. Refreshments were served to revive the tired participants.

The competition was brought to an end with the distribution of participation certificates and Mehran gifts for the mothers, to appreciate their effort. A special draw took place, with Dukan generously gifting coupons worth SR 100/- for each lucky winner. This was followed by a bumper prize that is usually sponsored by Pioneer books each year.

“ Angles around us !!!”

It is said that children learn less by listening and more by seeing and doing. Anything told in class by the teacher coupled with close real life observations and practical applications help the children enhance their cognitive skills. In the first week of February, children of Grade 3, after completely comprehending what angles are and how they are measured, went around in the school on an angle search. They went to each nook and cranny of the school on the lookout for as many angles as they could. Nothing was left behind; the walkway outside the classrooms, the auditorium, the KG1 & 2 play area, their very own playground, and even the school canteen was searched. Since it was a group activity, they also learned an important skill of being open to others’ suggestions and opinions as well as tolerance towards their peers.

T he Hands - on activity that the Grade 2s enjoy

year after year is the volcano making activity.

Since trying to understand how the earth is beneath the

ground is a little difficult, this activity enabled the children to get a better understanding of a volcano, its types and how it is formed.

Children worked in groups and made their volcanoes using clay. Vinegar and baking soda were mixed together inside the volcano, and red food colour was added to give the lava effect. They learnt that the most treacherous and dangerous landform is actually helping the earth by making the land and its surroundings fertile. Children decorated their volcanoes with trees, flowers etc. to show how land near it becomes fertile.

Through such hands - on activities, children learn to… build, imagine, experience, investigate, explore, create, observe, predict, and use their senses.... not to mention a chance to learn outside the classroom environment.

Quran Recitation Competition

Always striving towards achieving its mission, Junior school organized Annual Quran Competition on Wednesday, 23rd March 2016 for KG 3 and Grade 1 and Thursday, 24th March 2016 for Grade 2 and 3 in order to enhance the love of Allah (SWT) and the Quran in children and to inculcate in them a desire and habit to read Quran in the manner taught by the Prophet .

Students had been trained by their teachers at school and reinforced by parents at home for improving their Qira’at skills of the selected Surahs. Special emphasis was on reciting with the correct makharij, abiding by the rules of tajweed, avoiding mistakes in recitation and reciting with confidence.

The venue was beautifully decorated to cater mothers of the participants and students. Mrs. Bassima Qara’ali, was kind enough to give her valuable time to judge the event.

The program began with the recitation of the Holy Quran as is the norm, followed by the commencement of the programme.

L earning by doing is a long lasting experience and children always take pleasure in such education. This adoption of hands - on

experiments at Al Waha helps the children develop their various psychomotor skills in a better way. Educating students through such methods help a teacher assess the children instantaneously. They not only get the concept clear but also learn to work as a team.

Children of Grade - 3 had an electrifying experience during circuit making activity. Concept of circuits was perceived by the students thoroughly in an unconventional learning environment.

Circuit Making - Grade 3

Young writers learn to bake …...

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. We have all heard of this proverb many times in our life. But when work is combined with play, it ensures learning where children are sure to have fun.

The baking activity for the grade 1s took place in the second week of April 2016. The prime objective of this activity was to integrate Language, Math, Science and Writing into the activity so as to develop and enhance the students’ knowledge in an enjoyable and unique way.

Each section was allotted a different day for the activity. Having made groups of 4 or 5, the teacher showed the children oven mitts and spoke to them about safety tools when working with an oven. Then she introduced them to the term ‘baking’ and spoke about other methods of cooking. She showed them the oven and also enlightened them about its use and dangers. After the children got to know the basics of baking, the teacher made them familiar with the ingredients which were going to be used to bake cookies. She showed them a packet of flour, sugar, chocolate chips, butter, oil, egg and vanilla extract. So, here Language was incorporated into the activity.

Children were introduced to the various measuring tools used for the activity. Example: Whisk, measuring cups, bowl, baking tray, butter paper etc. When measuring cups were shown, the children immediately recalled the chapter of Science in which they had learnt about measuring volume of a liquid using a measuring cup. Thus, Science too was incorporated in the activity.

The enthusiasm among children could be seen by their facial expressions. The teacher pulled out the cookie recipe, read it out to the students and each group was given a bowl and a whisk. Then the teacher went to each group and assisted the children in making the dough according to the recipe. While making the dough, teacher showed the students the measurement to be taken for each ingredient.

Example: ½ cup butter. So, here we integrated Math into our activity by introducing measurements to the children. Once all the groups were done with the dough, teacher took out cookie cutters and gave it to the children. She helped them in making balls from the dough and then shaping it by using the cookie cutter. The children were enthralled as they chose the shapes of their own cookies.

The cookies were now ready to be baked. Again in accordance with the recipe, the cookies were put in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes. The aroma of the cookies spread throughout the hallway. Once the cookies were done, the little chefs couldn’t wait to bite into their yummy creations.

The students went back to their classes happy and contented. The activity concluded with the teacher giving a creative writing worksheet to the students wherein they had to write about their experiences while baking. Here, the Writing Skills of the students were brought into play.

The joy of doing something on their own with a little bit of their teacher’s assistance was evident in their talks and thoughts which were reflected in their creative writing pieces.

Wednesday, April 20th was an exciting day at Al Waha International Junior School. We had our “Grade 2 Annual Spelling Bee Competition.” Students from all eight sections of Grade 2 participated in the round 1 selection. Students who qualified in this round moved on to the next round. Fourteen students made it to the final round by qualifying in the first two rounds held in their classes earlier this April.

Mothers were invited for the final round which was held in the school auditorium. All the finalists were given a list of sixty words for the final round along with the lists given in the previous rounds. To say that the competition was tough, seemed like an understatement..... as the children spelled word after word without a flinch. The sixty words from the final round were all correctly spelled in a matter of minutes. The pronouncer had to use words from round 1 and round 2 lists as well.

The Spelling Bee lasted for nineteen rounds and finally we had the last one standing.....Noor Ul Huda from 2F won the Spelling Bee for the year 2015-2016.

CONGRATULATION Huda! You made it!

Rhymes touch the hearts of the little ones and children always enjoy Nursery Rhymes fervently. Taking this in consideration, “Nursery Rhymes Day” was organised on 14th April 2016 for the students of KG2. The mesmerizing performance by our little stars took us by storm. All the sections of KG2 enthusiastically participated to perform on various Rhymes. It was truly a proud moment to see our little ones perform confidently on stage to enamour their special audience of KG1. The children looked fantastic in their array of colourful costumes. Their synchronization and enactment was a visual treat! Rhymes transport children to a world of fantasy and play… and can develop a child’s visualization skills through the use of actions. With this, “Rhyme Day” also gave them the opportunity to expand their imagination. Besides having a great time putting up an amazing show, the event helped the children to enhance their presentation skills and give them self-confidence. It was indeed an entertaining day! Thank you parents for your part in an extremely successful event!

Water Splash…..

Water play is both an indoor and outdoor activity for children because it is open-ended

and provides opportunities for extended learning.

Water play encourages the development and eye/hand coordination through pouring,

squeezing, stirring, painting, scrubbing and squirting. Children strengthen their gross

motor skills by running and dodging water drops. They widen their sensory experiences

as they put their hands in different textures.

Water play fosters learning in all areas of development. It provides opportunities for

children to experiment Math and Science concepts, strengthen their physical skills,

advance their social and emotional skills and enhance Language development and

creative imagination.

Some of the water activities which children had during water splash were bursting the

balloons, hit the spot with balloons, bubble pop, collect the balls, squirt coloured water

and water splashing.

“Let’s Learn to Give” – A Skit by TeachersCharity is the act of willfully extending benevolence to others, a conscious act and decision made by a willing heart, without expecting a reward. Kindergarten teachers enacted out skits to instill the concept of “Let’s learn to Give” to the children during the second term. In this age of wanting much more than we need, it is an important concept to teach along with other life skills so that children can understand how joyful it feels to give and share with others.

The main purpose of this event was to make the children understand the importance of giving, not only in terms of materialistic things, but also love, help, forgiveness, time and smile to each other and everyone around.

The skit had different scenarios and audiovisual followed by interactive sessions with the children.

The children were excited to see the mascots, the Gummy Bear and a clown, during the interactive sessions, adding energy and enthusiasm to the event.

Save That Egg…. Nothing  can  substitute  the prominence of practical  tasks in  the  progression  of comprehensive  learning. Logical  reasoning  activities are done to enhance children’s abilities  to  use  rational, systematic  series of  steps and given  instructions  to arrive at a conclusion  for completing a particular task.

The Gr  3s  participated  in  the ‘Save  that  egg’  activity  in  the first  week  of  May.  For  this, children were distributed into groups  and  each  group  was invited  to  devise  a  technique to pack  the only  egg given  to them  in  such  an  intellectual way  that  it  would  not  break when dropped from a height.

No assistance was given to the children  at  any  point  of  the task,  and  they were  asked  to brainstorm  ideas  that  they thought  would  help  them succeed in protecting the egg.

All  six  sections  of  Gr  3 began  their  task  at  the very same time causing an air  of  suspense  and excitement  as  to  who would  succeed  and  who would  learn  from  their mistakes.  The  egg  was dropped  from  a height  of almost  20  meters  after which  each  team  rushed down to inspect their egg.

Among cheers of victory and  moans  of  defeat,  many  objectives  were achieved;  working  as  a  team,  brain  storming, learning  to  execute  ideas, time management,  and  best  of  all,  being  able  to succeed  and  fail  with  grace.

Graduation As the year comes to an end, we pause to reflect upon the many moments that bring nostalgia. Graduation Day is a special occasion when we bid farewell to our Grade 3s as they graduate and get ready to enter the world of the seniors. The programme opened, as usual, with a beautiful qirat by Areeba Zaima Alam (Surah Al Fatiha) and Amaan Liyaqat (Surah Isra) and from 3E and 3B respectively. The translation was done by Sakina Yousuf of 3D. It was then followed by the Welcome Address from the academic supersivor Mrs. Raseena Imitiaz. The students of Grade 3 mesmerised the audience with their song…..“My Wish”. As the mothers listened to their children sing, we are sure each mother present there was silently praying for all the children. After the song there was a special segment “Intelligence and Us.” It gave an insight to how, we, the adults have fixed expectations from our children. When our

children fail to fulfil our expectations, we tend to feel disappointed. Our children have varied talents and intelligences it is up to us, their advocates, to help them identify their talents and guide them to succeed, not just in academics but also in whatever intelligence they are born with. This segment was concluded by a movie created by the children for their mothers. This year Mrs Amina Hyder, shared her memories, experiences and her journey as an Al Waha mom. A message truly from a mother’s heart. Then came another exciting part of the graduation…. The Debate. The topic for this year was “ Are Final Exams Necessary for School.” Each team believed their

stance was the right one. The battle of words continued through the rebuttal round and neither team was ready to give up. It was a truly tough decision for the judges, Mrs Seema Anis, headmistress of Senior school and Mrs Fazeena Zaki, one of the Board of Directors of our school who were awestruck by all the children and their superb speaking skills.

The debate concluded with the team “for the motion” Ayesha Aftab, Nawfal Najaf, Sakina Talha and Sawsan Jeelani winning the Debate. Sawsan Jeelani bagged the “Best Speaker Award” with her eloquent speech and convincing argument.

Honorable Chief Guest Mrs. Siddiqa Halabi, spoke on this auspicious day. She shared her cherished memories as a former Principal of Al Waha. It was truly an overwhelming speech, especially for the ones who had previously worked with her. It was followed by the distribution of Diplomas to the students by Mrs. Amal and the respective class teachers assisted her. Soon after, Mrs. Vaseema invited all the teachers of Grade 3 on stage to thank them for their untiring hard work and dedication. The students presented roses to each of them as a token of their appreciation.

2015 - 2016 Roll of Honour was extra special this year…it was the marking of 10 years! A special segment was presented to the mothers. The achievements of all the winners of the previous years’ Roll of Honour beginning from the year 2005- 2006 were displayed; their pictures of then and now, along with their accomplishments were shown. Towards the end of the segment all the six finalists; Amaan Liyaqat, Sakina Talha, Sawsan Jeelani, Yusra Inam, Zain Hasan, Zaina Rayees were called on the stage, and the results were announced by Mrs. Regina Ashraf, the Senior Supervisor of Junior School. Sawsan Jeelani of 3D was the second contender, while Amaan Liyaqat Khan of 3B became the first contender. This year the Roll of Honour of 2015- 2016 was bagged by Zaina Rayees of class 3E.

The event concluded with Mrs. Regina Ashraf thanking all those who have made the show successful and the singing of Saudi National Anthem by the children. The children gifted their mothers with beautifully handmade frames that contained messages from the children, and also took with them souvenirs that would remind them of their time at the Junior School.

Praise is one of the most powerful tools that can be used to encourage good behaviour in children. Lots of praise will help make children build confidence. Red Ribbon Award is one of the school’s best practices that aims at providing positive reinforcement for the children’s behavior. Every week during the assembly, children who are found doing good deeds on a regular basis are recognized for their positive social conduct. All children are motivated to work towards similar behavior. Eventually, the main objective is to encourage children to internalize positive behavior without any need for rewards.
